Fun fact, the sun has yet to (literally) set on the British Empire. Randall Monroe over at xkcd worked it out, and it turns out that the territories still under direct British control are just far enough apart to prevent that from happening.
Until a total solar eclipse occurs on that one island that the sun is shining on while the rest of the British Empire has night...
@@thomas127 F
@@thomas127 But then the sun wouldn't set, you just could use the phrase the sun is always sunny what in any case would be wrong because the mainland lives in a perpetual cloudy weather.
Thomas a solar eclipse is not a sunset...
Including the Commonwealth, it doesn't. If you just count the territories, it hits sunset for a few minutes before the sunrise hits elsewhere.
I still count it, woo Britain!

@Wojtek Dawson There is Darwin, that the Japanese know about. But if you make another one, like 50km away, the Japanese won't know about it.
The Catalina was a seaplane so could land in the waters near near the island, and all that would be needed is some fuel tanks

At 2:09 you pronounced gif with a j sound. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
This is actually the right way to pronounce it, according to the creator of the GIF format: edition.cnn.com/2013/05/22/tech/web/pronounce-gif/index.html
No it's not, the creator is an idiot
@@thomas127 the creator isn't the authority on how to pronounce it.
It is an acronym, and convention is that you use how the letters are pronounced as part of the words.
@@smalltime0 NASA, JPEG, and laser. It isn't exactly consistent.
@@jarni1242 JPEG isn't a pure acronym, FYI.
Laser, even how you spelt it, has long become a word rather than an acronym.
NASA follows the format.
You might be going off IPA, but reading it incorrectly.
3:35 Wouldn't flying over (and maybe landing in, can't tell) axis controlled territory in 1943 also be a little sketchy? Maybe it would have been a little safer to route from Egypt through Sicily (invaded by allies at the time of the flights) to Gilbrater and/or Portugal to the British Isles? If Sicily wasn't an option, maybe somewhere in North Africa?
Maybe I'll do some math and report back.
So, I'll assume the BOAC the Armstrong Whitworth Ensign, which according to Wikipedia was historically used for transport between Britain and Asia. This aircraft has a range of 1190 nmi (2200 km or 1370 mi). Here is my route from Karachi to London, staying within the British Empire in July 1943 as much as possible, and avoiding war zones and the airspace of unfriendly countries.
Karachi to Kuwait (Kuwait City): ~1054 nmi (~1953 km or ~1213 mi). Flies over Iran into Kuwait, a British protectorate
Kuwait City to Mandatory Palestine (Tel Aviv): ~701 nmi (~1299 km or ~807 mi). Could be anywhere in Palestine or even Egypt. Mandatory Palestine is part of the British Empire.
Tel Aviv to Tripoli: ~1093.84 nmi (~2026 km or ~1259 mi). Tripoli is not a war zone at this point and is now governed by the British Empire (until 1951).
Tripoli to Gibraltar: ~938 nmi (~1738 km or ~1080 mi). Gibraltar is part of the British Empire and is for the most part not under threat from the axis at this point.
Gibraltar to Porto (Portugal): ~399 nmi (~739 km or ~459 mi). Stopping in Portugal could most likely be avoided, but it is a little safer this way and avoids unfriendly Spain (Spanish airspace is avoided by going south and west across the Strait of Gibraltar, through the Gulf of Cádiz, and entering friendly Portugal from the south) as well as unfriendly Vichy France and very unfriendly Nazi occupied France. Side note: Both Spain and Portugal are officially neutral, but Portugal is friendly to the allies and Spain is friendly to the axis. Portugal gets screwed over by history regarding both world wars far too often. They were an allied belligerent in WWI but got nothing for it in the end, and were important in keeping Fascist Spain out of WWII.
Porto to London: ~771 nmi (~1428 km, ~887 mi). Routed to avoid unfriendly Spain and unfriendly Nazi occupied France.
All of these flights are well within range of long-range transport aircraft operated by BOAC avoid active war zones and potentially hostile airspace. I'm not sure how it actually was routed and I could be way off, but I'm not convinced they flew mail and civilians over Nazi and Fascist controlled Italy, Vichy France, and Nazi occupied France as is depicted in the video.
Interesting. Before the war, most (or all?) of the route was flown in the huge Empire flying boats, they continued to be used during the war until Japan joined the fight. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_Empire
I believe it’s supposed to be allied occupied Italy, then Switzerland, then to the Other southern invasion of France (yes there was 2) then the Channel Islands, then to london
Animation absolutely on point, as per usual. Keep it up!

That they do. They were kind of the do-it-all plane in the pacific. Reconnaissance, SAR, ASW, bomber, etc. Look up the "Black Cat Squadrons" of WWII some time. Their crews would paint their hulls black and make night raids against Japanese shipping.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_PBY_Catalina#Night_attack_and_naval_interdiction
'the island did succesfully exist at the time' has the same energy as 'have a christmas and new year'.
Hmm, but how could an Australian machine land in (I assume the map is accurate) Serbia, Italy, Vichy France and then fly over German-occupied France at this point in time?
I'm surprised no one went insane on that flight.

I knew it was going to be the PBY Catalina, and I wasn't disappointed. Makes sense that, all nonessentials removed and as much auxiliary fuel as you can carry, it could successfully, reliably, and consistently make 4000 mile, 28+ hour trips over open ocean and through enemy territory without any losses or accidents.

The year is 2033, it is 4 years into WWIII. You are running a supply mission to Perth from India in a PBY-Catalina. It's a long old flight so decided to download some skillshare courses to make the most of your time. Just before you are due to see the second sunrise over the Indian Ocean you here a panicked noise come from the cockpit.
Co-pilot "what the hell is that in the sky?!!!"
Pilot "I'm not sure Jim, it looks like a missile?"
Co-pilot "A missile? for us?"
Pilot "I doubt it, might just be another ICBM heading towards the US"
In your old life, you were a military aviation expert and you know that the missile was, in fact, a Russian S-400 Surface to Air Missile. You're cool, calm and collected as you think you have just the right skillshare course to deal with the situation. You look at your tablet and scroll through your downloads and can't see it.
You 'I was sure I had a course on here somewhere'. Frantically you keep searching and then suddenly you find the file you are looking for. You feel so much better, and you put on your headphones, open the file and it starts playing. After a quick intro, the screen goes black. Nothing for a solid 3 seconds then words start to appear. Slowly they take shape and when they have formed it forms to the say "yeah bro, you're like super duper fucked here". What angers you more than anything isn't that you are totally screwed but rather that the message was written in Comic Sans.
They used the Catalina PBY. It was a good choice. This was one tough bird, and it had already proved itself worthy in the war effort by serving as a sub and ship killer, among other duties. If you ever get to see one up close, its impressive...said the overly enthusiastic, but mousy, vintage aircraft voice from the back row.
