      GildedBear To be fair, there wasn’t too much water between Addis Ababa and their destination, so the chances for a water landing probably wouldn’t have been too high. On the other hand, I don’t think that a non-water landing would have been much better.

    Relative to payload, that one C-17 that left Kabul with 823 passengers was the equivalent of a 747 carrying 1,710 people.

      They haven't always, and only in the remodel(you can see this by the different livery, except for specially painted legacy liveries on the TLV-JFK flights) the new jets got the countermeasures, it wasn't a thing in 1991 yet. Specifically it was installed and verified in 2004.

    I remember that Saturday well. Here in Jerusalem, we heard planes flying overhead all day long, very unusual for a Shabbat in Jerusalem. When we found out what happened, it seemed like a miracle. The ingathering of the exiles.

    The thing I love the most about Jewish law is its respect for life. From what Ive seen, there are barely ANY Jewish laws that cannot be broken if it would preserve life. It's like all their laws have an asterisk after that reads "unless it would save a life". (Obviously, this generalization doesnt apply to the Ten Commandments or laws regarding the handling of the Ark of the Covenant.)

      Actually they do cover the 10 commandments and the handling of the Ark of the Covenant.
      The only exceptions to the "unless it's to save a life" clause are Murder, Adultry, and Idolatry.

      You can draw the borders in many ways depending on your ideology, but the way he drew the borders doesnt make any sense

      Actually, there's a very good chance that that is where the name comes from. Tolkien was in to Jewish history, and the Jews of the Gondar region manged to defend themselves for a long time.

      Our (Israel's) current Deputy Minister for Internal Security, Gadi Yeverkan came in 1991. Don't know if he was on that specific flight but he was among the 14500 and all the planes were crowded to capacity. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadi_Yevarkan

    You forgot my favorite fact.
    They made the initial measurements with Israelis and expected to fit 800 odd people in the plane but, and I quote "Because the passengers were so light, many more were squeezed in."
    Also my mother happened to work as a flight attendant at the time and saw small chairs being crammed into a cargo plane and was wondering why the heck were they doing it. (Eventually they didn't need the chairs and just crammed everyone in)

    Over 4000 Ethiopian Jews died on their journey from Ethiopia, due to hunger, murder, exhaustion, and more.
    Today, here in Israel, we remember those brave souls who had only one dream - to get to Jerusalem.
    I don't know if you uploaded this video on this date on purpose, but anyway, it is very appropriate.
    And we insist that everyone understands that it was not only a great effort from the Israeli government, but even moreso a brave and fearless journey that the Ethiopian Jews chose to lead, mostly because of their zionism, and not because of the political situation in Ethiopia.

      The first rescue mission was called operation Moses until the Ethiopian Kessim (Rabbis) pointed out that this was ominous because Moses never made it to Israel. At which point the Military Planning Board renamed it Operation Joshua.

      And, as flights between Israel and Ethiopia travel today, they weren't able to use the most direct route, which would've overflown Saudi Arabia and Jordan (relations with the latter only resulted in 1994). They had to travel the full way up the Red Sea from Ethiopia, turning into the Gulf of Aqaba between Israel and Jordan, then nearly due north to Tel Aviv.
