How To Make Your Left Hand Better At The Piano

- Students often ask me how to play better with my left hand. They say that their left hand feels a little bit sluggish or has less dexterity than the right hand. Can you relate?
The reason for this is that the left hand often gets the “boring” part of the song- acting as the rhythm section or the bass player. The right hand takes care of melody - and has a more complex role within the songs we play. What this can lead to is a left hand that simply doesn’t get as much attention or skill development as our right hand.
So to solve this problem I have a few tips for you! Watch the video to learn more. 😎

Hi Lisa, I came across your video channel on RUclips by chance this afternoon. How lucky I was this afternoon. Realising I was watching your chord hack No 3, I went back and watched Nos 1 thru 6, twice. You are truly amazing, and to me a very genuine teacher..... i.e., non-commercial like others For many reasons, i felt your approach to explaining is easygoing, fun, genuine and sincere.
My difficulty is exactly what you teach: I play the piano by ear, as I cannot read notes and play! Your series is showing me how to augment my playing by letting my left hand play catch-up with my right hand. My left hand is weak as I rely on the right hand to pick up the tune, and quite easily for that matter. .So in following your 6-series chord hack, I felt finally there is someone who knows what it takes.
Furthermore, you camera is superbly placed above your hands, so we can 'see' what you explain. Others never do and hence my frustration over the many other videos on RUclips I watched.
I subscribed instantly and will follow you always. If I have a question or request an advice, would you oblige?
Cordially,
Nami
These lessons are just what I need! I am practicing them every day! Thanks so much!
Wonderful techniques. Thank you. I never thought my left hand would improve. Now It is improving.
Excellent and very useful steps to practice... thank u madam
These are so great. I just started to really work on the left hand and realized how weak it is in comparison. As a rock/pop pianist (and I really have a hard time calling myself a pianist lol) I have also found that site reading chords and lyrics played with my left hand is doing great things. I usually only play bass notes or maybe octaves with my left hand and right hand does chords, so kind of reversing that. This way, I have to work in inversions and it challenges both the muscles and the brain together.
I am started to play left hand after watching "pianote " videos!!!
With out you guys I am nothing ..
Love you pianote
I didn’t think there would be any help for me. You were awesome. I’m going to keep practicing these. I struggle with the very things you taught. I’m excited because I feel like I can do it now. Thank you very much.
It's very realistic & helpful tutorial that I watch.... thank you Pianote.
Wow.. Thank you for bringing this exercise as an answer to my Last question in Live video..
I'm practicing fast scales in left... Lil bit tough but it's working.
Pianote please to share tips of changing Scale in between the song... For example scale changes in song "My Heart will Go On" (Titanic), "Man in the Mirror" by MJ and Spiderman intro Theme..

Me, a left handed pianist: *watches the whole video
I found this video to be very informative and wanted to give feed back as I tried them. The first exercise I used twinkle twinkle little star and Beethoven Ode to Joy. Simple right haha. They didn't feel odd at all in my left hand and fingering wasn't really difficult. The second exercise wasn't to bad as I play a lot of 5 chords in my left hand so octave plus note in the middle. The next one with skipping notes and moving up the scale pretty fun not to much difficulty. The apreggio one was a little difficult but I got it figured out once I got the chord progression in my head. I have better volume control in my left hand than right lol but I will work them out haha. I never really tested my left hand in such ways but I suppose my left hand is a bit developed than I thought but I shall continue to use your videos for help thank you
All good ideas. Thank you.
You're a great teacher! Thanks
My favorite RUclips piano teacher :) Thank you! Trying to improve my chord progressions, a strong left hand will certainly help.
Thanks for the great instruction and tips! I love that so many of you guys are doing this for free on the internet. You've helped so many people. Thank you.

Love your personality, you are a great teacher. Im improving as a beginner with these exercises!
What a great tutor Lisa. God bless.

Thank you for your great videos. Many options out there to choose from and I keep coming back to your channel. It is such a blessing to learn from the best and not leave my home to boot.
Omg, those are excercises that my teacher is teching me and more!!!, he focus a lot in the technique, In the 4 months as student I feel I am in the rigth path!!! Thanks and please load a video to play something as student, improvisación!.
So?
This was excellent!!! I like your enthusiasm and I love your simplicity! Thank you! after practicing, I can hear and feel a difference already! I'm excited!
Thank you Lisa. I found it very rewarding working thru these exercises.
Your videos are great. Very interesting and clear to understand. I've had a dislocated right shoulder for the past 12 years (a long time I know). I've always loved the sound of piano and keyboards and what you can do with them. I am a natural left-hander so playing with my left hand will be natural for me. I know it will be difficult learning the piano but I want to know if I stand a chance or should I not bother.
It's never too late! If it's something you want to do then I think you at least owe it to yourself to try. We have a series of 4 free lessons for beginners that might be useful - www.pianote.com/getting-started
Everystep you teach is wonderfully, clearly understandable and rendered simple at the extreme. THANKS a lot. You are SMART, dear lady!!!

But just one question! Is it enough without going for music class.? Because yes I have not attended any music class but I am learning to play and lead my church fellowship and any program.
Please reply if you care!
Thank you. You are a fantastic teacher.
Thank you for the information. Easy to follow.
can you use the 4 finger instead of 3 on your left hand for your arpeggios? for the ones u played here u always use 3 but I'm wondering why not 4 finger on the 3rds of each chord?
This was really helpful! thanks a bunch...
Useful tutorial & cutest tutor :)

Hi Lisa, just a quick question, when doing the arpeggios you called A minor an A, am i missing a point. Great videos by the way. thank you
Nice and to the point
Best channel to learn piano on RUclips.....Great...
Great video & presentation!
Good clip ! Thanks !
After 40 years of not playing this video is so Kool to get me started again......really gets the grey matter going lol
Hi, why do we push pedal? When?
I'm a leftie also but have the same problem. I regularly practice scales and sight reading (Czerny op 599 I found is excellent for me). I never practice arpeggios even though I see them in lots of pieces. That's bad isn't it?
I need to do chords in right hand and arpeggios in left , which I haven’t tried, thank you 😊 I am trying out scales using both hands to get used to using both hands
Scales is a fantastic way to develop your left hand! Nice work!
Pianote Thank you 😊
Thank You madam. For this good & valuable excercise.
Hey could you make a lesson on extended harmony and tritone substitution.
Very nicely explained. Keep it up.
It's really help me please continue updating new finger excersis thank you

t
Thank you.

That’s Hanon Exercise!!!👌🏻👍👌🏻
Wooow Very Thank you sister. God bless you. Keep rocking. From India... JOE
Thank you. I love your enthusiasm and the organized way you present your lessons.
very informative video.. thank you so much..
Thank you!!!❤
Wow thank you
One of the problems with the ring and little fingers is that they both share the same tendon. It makes it difficult to control one without the other following, but practice does help.
The dexterity exercise was the first exercise of Hannon.
Helpful video. I believe the “dexterity” exercise is actually Hanson #1.
I know that was a typo, but it was probably the best typo I've seen for a long time!
But you are right! It is Hanon #1.
super way of approach i like it very much......
i try to improve in left hand
Nice videos and helps !e learning them👊
Thanks this video is so helpful continue good work. God bless
Im pretty good at playing left & right hand separate & together only if i dont play any staccatos. When i go to play staccatos with both hands my hands slow down. Do you have any suggestions. Because im at the end of playing Ecossaise.
I’m left hand dominant, but generally ambidextrous overall. Each hand has its role!
That said, I have to see what my right hand is doing more than the left which comes more naturally , either because of my left preference or just because it’s usually an easier role than the right.
These tutorials are great! Thank you for the help!
Oh that's interesting! I definitely find myself looking more at my left hand!
You are my fav teacher
I love your teaching
Thanks for this lesson. Is very useful to me. I wanna learn more from you. I'm in Africa and I wanna learn
Thankyou so much 🥰🥰🥰

Thank you very much! Great tips! :)
I am like this with the Right hand. I am left-handed.

Pianote I need some work with my left hand because I just play
Pianote Is there anyway to play more than one note in the left-hand
Pianote thank you I play only one note in the left-hand
Pianote Nice I need some work with my left hand because I only play one note
I went on Amazon and just ordered a new left hand. But they didn't have next day delivery so I'll let you know how it's going next week.
Thank you
Oh, this video is very helpful!
Thank you! :)
excellent tips! Thank you. I will practice and the arpeggios are likely going to be my most important to practice. But what I really have an issue with is disassociating my left from my right when I'm playing a piece. My brain doesn't seem to have the capability to do two different tasks at the same time. Left hand works fine alone, right hand is good alone, but put the two together to perform their individual functions, and I just cannot seem to keep correct timing or anything. I practice the same piece over and over and I eventually get it because of that, but I don't feel like my left is keeping time on it's side while the right is busy playing the melody. It's like my right hand says to my left, "Oh you're back, forget it, I can't do this with you messing around on your side of the keyboard." ANNOYING!
I really enjoy your teaching style and apologize for my rant, but really appreciate your excellent advice. Makes complete sense to go back and work forward again! You're right we want so badly to be better, that we, or at least I, get in over my ability range. Thank you SO MUCH!
Pianote there is no need to practice just arpeggios. It is better to search the pieces that have this arpeggios and to work the technical aspects of the arpeggios in the piece directly. There is too much literature written for piano, that we really don't need extra exercises. Just practice the difficult itself, but always in a musical context.
Coordination practice is pretty hard. Try to practice a lot of exercises, without the piano. The coordination is not just at piano playing, but it's a part of the persons
Thank you so much for responding. And I realized I should not have used the word "disassociating." But I'm sure you know I meant that I have trouble with my hands playing independently of each other. That is a brain issue though, right? I'm fairly coordinated with my left hand as I am a bare hoof farrier and I'm as good with my left hand as with my right doing that, it's not always doing 2 different exercises simultaneously, and I've been doing that for about 15 years. Your advice to break down a piece and focus on the most challenging areas until mastered is super helpful. I had been doing that, but to be advised of how important that can be to success is motivating. I wonder if some people just will never get to a place were they can play well because of the issue that I have with independent hands. Or is it a matter of time and practice? I practice daily for at least an hour.
Patricia Morgan Wagner there is no need of independent playing. You play with both hands together. You can achieve more of what you want, independence of the hands, if you practice in the opposite way. What you want, independence of the fingers, or the hands, is not your ultimate goal. Your ultimate goal is to play with both hands, and to control the commands you give to the left and right hands simultaneously. But, if you practice your independence, than you meet the problem that your both hands won't be able to stay together. Maybe you want to play triplets with one hand and another rhythmical pattern with the other hand.
Maybe you can send a piece with a particularly hard part, and then, I could give you some advices
Pianote I love hearing my mom always tells me I need to play more than one note and left hand
