I got it with neither. I just happened to see her after a couple sky dungeons and islands, took a picture because i realised it was a new dragon, and only having found about 3 memories at that point I figured out its significance. What i did not know was that she was carrying the master sword, so after seeing her several times i decided to ascend on a wierd little hover bike contraption to get to her, out of just wanting to get closer to harvest a scale or two, and then I realised she wasnt dangerous, so while being amazed that i actually could land on a dragon, and picking up all those juicy shards for my weapons, I thought of going to the head to get a great view, and as link climbed over that golden mane I saw it, the master sword. and i was absolutely blown away until i realised that my first thought as to what the light dragon is was most likely correct.... so i just stayed with her for two irl hours riding around hyrule, also mapping her flight path for future reference as i did not have enough stamina yet to pull the sword.

So I didn’t know there was a fight down there. I was just having fun and exploring. My all time fear in all Zelda games are the wall and floor hands. ANY hand monster I never touched in ANY Zelda game. Required or not. Even in OOT on the 3DS I had my friend complete the shadow and Forrest temple because of those hands.
I jumped down, the hands grabbed me. I teleported out of there. Marked it with a skull on the map and never went back. That was game launch day…..it is currently September…I still never went back.
I’m watching this video to gather the courage to fight this thing. Thank you Austin for making this video. I’ve watched you since BOTW and you actually randomly saw some of my in game horse pics on Instagram and liked them. To this day I still have the screen shot of you liking my horse back from BOTW. Like much in this game, you don't need to follow any questline to get the Master Sword; neither the Deku Tree one nor the memories one; just complete 20 shrines to get the second well of stamina, get on the dragon somehow, and pull it. Completing the memories gives you one chance to get atop the dragon without having to get to the upper sky, and completing the Deku Tree quest gives you a quest marker showing the dragon's position and makes the dragon fly much lower making it much easier to get atop of, but neither are needed.

By the time I figured out how to get into the forest, because I didn't know how, I had probably about 6 hearts and a full stamina wheel and hopped into the tree. The hands murked me a bunch of times because I didn't see it coming and didn't have any good food, but I figured out how to ascend the mushroom to make food with portable pots and kill the hands with bow time. Then the Phantom came out, which was terrifying because I hadn't seen it before, and it one shot me about 10 times. I warped out and proceeded to go do every shrine I could find to make some better gear for about a week now. And here I am coming back to the video because I am traumatized and afraid to go back with even 15 hearts and I want to be prepared. With me luck guys. Lol

In my opinion Dragon's Tears quest is a great story. The story itself in this one quest on how it builds up, it out does any other Nintendo games story. Finding the tears is a hassle but well worth it. The last few cutscenes pull the heartstrings. Especially the cutscene before jumping onto the dragon's head and after obtaining the sword itself. Highly recommend doing the quest first if you love the lore and story of Zelda games instead of getting the sword right away.

I really enjoy how you can figure out the twist of the game entirely through the environment. There were 3 dragons im botw, a 4th is in this game. Very early on I saw the dragon and immediately went to go up to it. You see the mastersword and the blonde hair, you put the puzzle pieces together in your head and boom.

That being said, it does feel like I ruined something by obtaining it the way that I did. It felt like the game had a plan for me that I was completely unaware of. I entered Korok forrest and did the things there after I've already got the Master Sword, and it did feel a bit anti-climactic.

PLEASE NOTE to make sure you have 2 stamina circles BEFORE watching the final memory in the glyph quest. At least in my experience, after watching that memory, the Light Dragon cutscene triggered causing the Light Dragon to appear in the Akkala region right next to me WITHIN SKYVIEW TOWER RANGE mostly. She was still slightly out of range for my stamina so I had to make a flying machine at the nearby sky island with the construct, but the point is that she appears right next to you and it's rather easy to get to her from that tower. So instead of having to start at the Great Sky Island and make a fancy contraption, everything you'll need will be in the Akkala region. I was able to try it, realize I didn't have enough stamina, go to Terry Town to pray, go back to the tower, and try again only to realize I was still one stamina upgrade short.
I'm not entirely sure if she stays in the Akkala region after that cutscene until you fast travel away, or if she continues her normal flight path. It seemed like she was staying put as I was able to get on top of her twice from the skyview tower. Everywhere else I tried to get to her from a different skyview tower, I was a few meters just under her.

I actually don’t think that the cutscene after you pull the master sword ruins the story. I think people can appreciate story of the glyph cutscenes even if they see a pivotal moment of that with the master sword. There’s value in seeing the results of a story, and making you wonder how things got to where they are.
Plus, after you get one of three specific glyphs, you 100% know what’s going on. So maybe do the glyphs first until you get one of them and figure out the deal.

I have played this game for about four months and 230 hours. I beat the Fire Temple 2 days ago and the Hyrule Castle part yesterday. I have 128 shrines and 34 hearts and good stamina like almost full since practically the beginning or really early on. I am finally up to this. I got all of the glyphs. The only things I have left in the game are this and the end.

Before anyone reads this silly little comment I'm with everyone else in saying "Go do the quest line. Do not skip. It's definitely worth the time, effort, and watch time." It's that good this time around.
I did this fight today. Probably 3 or 5 hours as of this post (I don't remember) and it went relatively okay for me. Though I wasn't expecting a fight down there. Bombs through phase one (scary part of the fight for me still), and then phase two was my first time fighting "him". But thanks to some lynel retraining after years of not touching BotW he wasn't all that bad to deal with after learning what he does.
This quest line though from the Dragon Tears to the end with freeing the sword is a way better story over BotW. Was more invested in it, there was intrigue, and a whole bunch of light bulbs shining like the sun after I figured out what had to be done.

I had explored all of the depths, did all the shrines on the surface connected via lightroots, farmed 100s of bomb flowers. I used the phantom Ganon uder the deku tree like toilet paper. I maxed out a set of armor via the fountain fairies so I could've let him hit me a lot just for funsies if I wanted to. His hits would have been like a light tickle for my seasoned Hero of Tears.

It's worth realizing at the end of that cutscene with the Light Dragon, right before the not-shown cutscene... Link doesn't pull the Master Sword with sheer force of strength, similar to what happened in Breath of the Wild.
He just had to hang on, long enough.
And when the Light Dragon recognized who Link was, she RELEASED the Master Sword to him.
And that says an awful lot itself.

In my opinion getting the master sword through the dragon tears quest is much more satisfying. Knowing the events of the past and how the sword ended up with the light dragon tells a tragic tale and a beautiful one at that same time.
