  • "I haven't eaten a bite or slept for three days and nights, that's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis" - Tom T. Hall. Complete lyrics below.
    Vocals: Tom T. Hall
Words & Music: Tom T. Hall
Original Album: Ballad of Forty Dollars (Mercury Records - 1969)
    Lyrics:
If you love somebody enough, you'll follow wherever they go
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
If you love somebody enough, you'll go where your heart wants to go
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
I know if you'd seen her, you'd tell me 'cause you are my friend
I've got to find her and find out the trouble she's in
If you tell me that she's not here, I'll follow the trail of her tears
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
She would get mad and she used to say, that she'd come back to Memphis someday
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
I haven't eaten a bite or slept for three days and nights
That's how I got to Memphis, that's how I got to Memphis
I've got to find her and tell her that I love her so
I'll never rest till I find out why she had to go
Thank you for your precious time, forgive me if I start to cryin'
That's how I got to Memphis, That's how I got to Memphis...

I was sleeping on the ground beside the river next to the Manassas airport . Down on my luck and my wife left me when a car pulled up on the road beside the river and two men got out. They invited me to come to the airport and drink a beer with them. They were awaiting Tom T's flight to come in because they played in his band. I'll never forget that night. Helped me get on with my life.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tom T. Hall many years ago in Phoenix when he was in town for a concert. We met on a bench in a shopping mall - I was waiting for my then-wife to get off work, and he was waiting while Dixie did some shopping. Even back then he was one of my favorite artists. It was a brief meeting, we chatted idly for a few minutes, then he was on his way. He was such an unassuming, down to earth person. This is one of the greatest songs by one of the greatest singer / songwriters ever. RIP, Tom.

The first time I "met" Tom T. Hall was in 1981 when my Mom and Dad took me to a taping of "Pop Goes the Country" and he invited the audience to come up after the show to take pictures and shake hands. Many years later, after I'd become a studio musician, I officially met him in a recording studio in Nashville. I joked with him about how miserable I was as a 10-year-old who didn't understand that it took about three hours to film a 30-minute music television show. He offered me a cigarette, and I took it (even though I'd never smoked). I then told him that my Dad would sing the chorus of "I Like Beer" practically every time he'd pop a top on a Falls City or PBR. He got a big chuckle out of that. Six years ago, my wife and I officially gave up on Nashville and moved - precisely 5 miles from the Alabama state line - to Lincoln County, TN. I know she gets gets tired of hearing me sing "Country Is" almost every time we go out to sit on the porch ... but she's never said it! RIP Tom T. Hall. 16th and 17th Avenues need a lot more like you these days, indeed.

In my humble opinion one of the storyteller's best tunes ever. The legend has it that he was stopping by Faron Young's office to drop off some songs to pitch one day, and this was one of them. It was there that day that he first laid eyes on Miss Dixie Deen, Faron's secretary. They began dating and by 68 they were married. Miss Dixie passed away in 2015 and Tom T was never the same, and he withdrew from the public eye. Due to medical issues and severe bouts of depression, he took his life in 2021. A very sad sad day for the Country Music world indeed. He was 85.

Country music hits different after a breakup. Beautiful song. I first heard it 20 years ago. 5 years ago I moved to Memphis and met my ex of 4 years there. She moved there for me. Loved our time there and made a lot of memories. We'd smile and sing along with this song. We moved together elsewhere after living there about a year. 3 years later she left me for somebody else. I wonder if we stayed if things would have been different. I think about going back myself, but I'm just not sure anymore. Some part of me wishes we'd meet again in Memphis and start over one day. But the damage is done. This song just hurts so much. And she will never see this. "Forgive me if I start to cryin'..."

back in the days, the GPS used to be quite poetic. now it's turn left. turn right. continue on ten kilometers. turn left. ...
also i just wanted to go to Memphis.

Really hard song for me to learn on strumming chords, to sing, but I finally learned it after 60 years. One of my favourites and had to learn it. Voice is like gravel, so it’s only for my own personal satisfaction, and my daughter who sings would be my biggest critic, but at least my dogs don’t judge me.

      BG
Tech is okay. But the point is a lot of culture and class has gone down hill and the Us has degraded in many ways. Look at San Francisco and other tech areas with billionaires and people defecating on public roads. We’re now the most indebted nation to ever exist with 150 tribes in unfunded liabilities with social security running out by 2035.
Cheap money, cheap products etc has changed the culture. The cost of capital influences behavior.
There’s some good country singers like Aaron Watson, and then ya got country with rap in it. Sure computers and somethings have improved, but that doesn’t mean the human condition overall has improved. Young people get the same dopamine hit like you’d get from cocaine or porn by using social media. Its interesting how the bad side of tech is Not discussed.

To Dan, who doesn't understand why that song was used in the last episode... Did you miss Charlie's conversation with Will, in a flashback to a scene with them after a newscast discussing it, then mentions his grandson who is a music savant? Charlie had been listening to that song when Will came in and mentioned he didn't know Charlie liked country music. Charlie said that was his grandson's favorite and referred to his garage band.
I think it was very fitting that Will, who was trying to step up for Charlie with his grandkids, sings this song at that point. He was bonding, something he looked forward to doing with his own child.

I agreed with what you wrote and I want to add my other point-
when Charlie spoke to will at this scene, he mentioned Memphis as a symbol of a place the heart is at.
I felt like it was a different version of Rabbi Nachman of Breslaw who said that a person is where his thoughts are.
have a feeling that the message of all this was some what a summary to all the series in which they followed their idealistic and personal dreams, wherever they went and wherever they took them and at the finale it's like a road sign for the rest of their journey as ACN Newsroom family.
hope that I was clear enough....
      :-)

Nowadays they would call this "stalking", but in this context how can what the subject is doing be wrong? His 💔 is broken and he only wants to know what went wrong. One of the greatest story songs of all time, and it feels so real that you'd almost cry. This is what true love can drive a man to. RIP Tom Hall, you were one class act.
