I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him several times. He was a true gentleman. Although he grew up in Brooklyn; he eventually made his way to Jersey City and strangely enough lived just a few blocks away. I miss him; we all miss him.
I was there. Great show. Crazy camping experiences. Great music. One of Richie's latter day gigs. Still powerful. An intelligent, kind, groundbreaking NY folk legend.
I saw Mr. Havens perform this song in Calumet, MI a few weeks after this video was recorded. He told the audience a story to precede the song. In the story, he talked about how he learned the song from one of his friends while living in Greenwich Village in his early days. He asked his friend if he could play it for an audience, thinking his friend had written it, and his friend agreed, seeming confused. So he did perform it onstage at his next show. Afterwards, he said, a slender man with curly hair walked up to him and said something along the lines of "I like how you did All Along the Watchtower. I like it better than the original", shook his hand and walked away. A minute later his friend who had taught him the song ran up to him and asked "How was he? What did he say?" Richie said "Who?" "That man who walked up to you after the show, that was Bob Dylan! He wrote All Along the Watchtower!" And that was how Richie learned about Bob Dylan. He told it better, obviously. I figured I would share that, though, since I have never read it mentioned anywhere. Richie was a great musician and storyteller.
+Julie Foust I saw Ritchie singing "There are only 12 people on this planet" in front of a VW Combi van at Stonehenge Free Festival in Britain in 1975, made the hairs on my back tingle. Peace.
For some reason I remember hanging with a poet from the Beat Generation from ny and he thought Dylan ripped the song from havens, glad to read your comment to clear my mind up.
I don't think you heard Richie's story -- whatever it may have been -- correctly. Dylan wrote AATW in 1966 or 67, after his motorcycle accident. By that time, Richie had been playing in the Village for about five or six years. In, say, 1961 Havens (who was just four months Bob's elder) and Dylan were making the same circuit of coffeehouses, folk venues, and such. They absolutely, positively knew each other long before All Along The Watchtower. Richie's first commercial record, Mixed Bag, was published in 1966. One of the cuts was Dylan's Just Like A Woman. When that album came out, his manager was Albert Grossman, who was also Dylan's manager.
@@nealtraven7293 That was the story he told. He has been know to exaggerate his stories, so that probably accounts for it, but that is 100% the story he told when I saw him.
A beautiful soul! I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to see him in concert and meet him in person! He was so great with the audience..made you feel like family! Rest in peace and thank you for blessing us with your music!
When Jimmie Hendrix sang this song, the song sounded like it was coming from a rockstar. When Richie Havens sang it, it sounded like the words of a prophet. I gotta say that I have rarely ever heard anyone play the acoustic guitar with the same passion, let alone the same ability, as Richie Havens.
The Cowboy you should listen to the bob dylan version. I don’t really know how to describe the way he sings the lyrics but it’s different than jimi and Richie
I have played guitar, for 25+ years. Richie Havens is still, imo, a masterclass in strummed acoustic guitar. Everything else is a bonus. What an excellent musician.
One of the Greatest Folk-Rock-Singers and Guitar Players! I was Bless to witness Brother Richie Havens in Concert approximately 2007 at World Café in Philly-a Dream come True-I was at Woodstock in Doors---Bless His Soul! Ain't he the real deal, or what? I've seen him several times over the past few decades and have always found him to be brilliant and full of charisma! Peace be with you, Richie Havens!
Richie did a benefit for my Elks lodge in Manasquan,NJ. What a great guy! We spent a bit of time chatting.Noticing I was alone due the Mrs.home with a cold; he asked to speak with her. She was shocked. R.I.P. Richie, you are missed.
RIP, Mr. Havens. Another gentleman gone. He left us with passionate singing, awesome guitar playing, and a sense of wonder. I bet he had pets and enjoyed nature.
what an amazing artist and kind person, met him in Vail, CO, he played a free concert on the green, also saw in Boulder,CO at the Fox, the whole audience was in tears at the end, he sang- on the turning away- alone no guitar, just him- just beautiful!!!

Jimi! Yes. There must be some way outta here! A song for these times. No one like Richie Havens ( Kem close) today. Jimi - once in a lifetime, you get one🖕🏾
Howdy, Walter! I heard Richie say with my own two ears this song was stolen from him by Dylan in the days when all the folk people shared their stuff down the Village. Bitter End and stuff days. Sing on Richie and play that D-40.
Priceless face on dude playing the congas. He's like "what the hell am I supposed to do with these rhythms!?" Gotta love Richie. He wasn't gonna be constrained to any standard tempos
Rest in peace, Richie! Thanks for all the great music!

Is that the same Conga player from Woodstock? It'd be amazing if they worked together all those decades
I was there.
Great show.

Watch Bob Dylan biography and he admits he stole this song from an old man and ruined his Career. Richie was a good man Bob was a thief and junky.
