  • 'Wishful Thinking' is a Street Epistemology-inspired short film about a man engaging in various superstitious behaviors in order to save his daughter. The goal of the film is to get people to think critically about their supernatural beliefs.
We made the film back in 2017, and this is the first time I've posted it on RUclips.
Thanks to ‪@drpeterboghossian‬ for the inspiration (and for his cameo) and to ‪@magnabosco210‬ for his guidance.
The term "street epistemology" (SE) was coined in Peter Boghossian's first book "A Manual for Creating Atheists" and has now become a world-wide phenomenon wherein people help others reflect on the quality of their reasoning through civil conversation. To learn more about SE, you can visit the website - streetepistemo...
Special thanks to the cast and crew and to Aubrey Ayash for producing the film and making it happen!
You can buy "A Manual for Creating Atheists" here: www.amazon.com...

Once we’ve done 100% of what we can do (chemo, prep for an interview, build systems), there can be space for wishful thinking. But if it becomes a substitute for action, maybe that’s just Hopium addiction.

Great work Travis and team! There is something about placing faith in the bucket of wishful thinking that doesn't settle with me. While I work to sort out why that is, I still very much appreciate all you guys and the importance of the work you are doing. Thank you!

Wow… If you want stuff, write to Santa clause (or your senator), if you want peace and contentment, chat with God! Great filming but completely void of understanding what prayer is and what the meaning of God (or a god) is to the person who relates to that god. And, is it just me or did anyone else get the sense of ridicule aimed at anyone who prays? Prayer isn’t a Santa wish list naively mailed to the North Pole - I guess it is, if you think that’s what your God is for: to give you stuff just cuz - it is a communication with, a reaching out to, an appealing to for understanding, and a relating with some “thing” outside of the self.

Time spent in wishful thinking is so wasted. If that time could be used to actually think it has the potential to solve problems and develop understanding.

It's kinda funny; thanks! But the part about prayer is just intellectually lazy, sloppy and completely uninformed. This reveals much more about the ignorance of the ones who made this video than it does about what prayer actually is & how the rosary is intended to be used and for what. Very sad that those who value intellectual pursuit & scholarship would make such a grievous error.
Do your research. A 5 minute google search on any Catholic site would teach you about what prayer is and what the rosary is.
    This is just lazy.
Other than that, I loved it. Peter as the cashier was hilarious!!! 🤗🙏

Praying is an oxymoron. How can anyone possible imagine to make the omnipotent omniscient God "change his mind" and alter the course of history just because you want to find your keys, win the lottery or whatever.

Does prayer accomplish anything outside of the mind of the one who prays? If so, what does petitioning the supernatural do, and how does it work?
I won't insult you like you just insulted me, and I'd be curious to hear your answers to the above questions.

@@thesignalproductions I think the purpose of praying a prayer like the rosary, at least this is how I learned it, is as a meditation. And through meditation, one can achieve a kind of mental clarity and stability one may need to go one to achieve great works. Using Judeo-Christian values to achieve said great works might be really beneficial to both the individual praying the rosary and to anyone that individual knows. It seems, even if you entirely left the invocation of a god out of it, it could be really good.
      Idk, I'm a Heathen 🤷‍♀️.

I do appreciate the video you made but I also have a different view on prayer than what you portray it as. This is a definition of prayer that is exactly what I believe it is:
As soon as we learn the true relationship in which we stand toward God (namely, God is our Father, and we are His children), then at once prayer becomes natural and instinctive on our part (Matt. 7:7-11). Many of the so-called difficulties about prayer arise from forgetting this relationship. Prayer is the act by which the will of the Father and the will of the child are brought into correspondence with each other. The object of prayer is not to change the will of God but to secure for ourselves and for others blessings that God is already willing to grant but that are made conditional on our asking for them. Blessings require some work or effort on our part before we can obtain them. Prayer is a form of work and is an appointed means for obtaining the highest of all blessings.

Atheism is a great example of wishful thinking, i.e.: “There was nothing. Then it exploded. Then, defying the 2nd law of thermodynamics, things became more and more complex and organized over billions of years.”
…All in the grand hope of having no accountability to some designer greater than ourselves.
The arrogance to assume all others are the wishful thinkers and you’re just the rationally annointed.

Let's ask the counterfactual: if the promise of prayer delivering wishes were removed, would people practice prayer? I think the answer in the vast majority of cases is NO. Therefore it's fair to say that prayer is mainly about wish fulfillment.

Agreed, prayer is so wide, it can be repentance rumination, affirmations, venting and/or wishes. It's way too broad.

Just wondering... Suppose there were three people, from three different religions stranded in a life boat and all prayed to their respective god(s) for deliverance. After all were rescued and returned home, what would a reliable way of determining which (if any) of the gods were responsible to delivering them back to safely?

    • @mrmanic4151
      @mrmanic4151 Год назад +1

@@ferdinandkraft857 Either or really. Don't get me wrong, plenty of prayer can be wishful thinking but the feeling I get is that is painted solely or mostly as that which I don't feel is true. It was true for me as a Christian boy about 40% of the time but most prayers were apologies or ritualistic night-time or morning prayers, or prayers said in church etc.

Problem is that I think people who obsess with this topic disregard mindset and narrative control and therefore throw the baby out with the bathwater. It's either stupid or evil.
I mean look, you failed to implement mindset and narrative control à la Carol Dweck or Tom Bilyeu and it resulted in phantom pain in your back ruling your life for many years. That's just a small example of how mindset determines the outcome of every factor of every person's life.
