If you’d like to practise what's covered in this video, check out the lesson on the Cognito platform - cognitoedu.org/coursesubtopic/c2-gcse-aqa-h-t_7.14. The platform’s totally free, and has been built to make learning and revision as easy as possible. The main features are: - Lessons organised by topic, only the lessons relevant to your specific exam board and tier are shown. - Automatic progress tracking. Progress bars tell you what you’re doing well at, and what you need to spend some time on. - Practise quizzes so you can test your knowledge. You can quiz yourself on any combination of topics you like. - A huge number of fully-hinted questions that take you step-by-step through some of the trickiest calculations & concepts. - A comprehensive bank of past exam papers, organised both by year, and also by topic. an extra note for that last oxidisation reaction: not only a carboxylic acid is formed but also a water molecule but idk why cognito didnt show it. either way a very useful video
Can someone explain the reaction at 2:40? You have 4 carbons on both sides but you have 8 hydrogens on the acid compared to the 10 on butanol. What happened to the others? I know we added an oxygen due to the oxidising agent but why lose 2 hydrogens?
Oxygen is diatomic, which means it has 2 atoms, One of the atoms reacts with the alcohol to form a carboxylic acid. The other atom reacts with the hydrogen to form -OH. The second hydrogen is in the -COO(H) itself
i think the entire world knows by now that gcse's have been cancelled, you don't have to tell the man such an obvious fact, he is not living under a rock.
It’s written that way to help show how the atoms are actually linked together. Not something you have to worry about at the moment, but as you learn more about chemistry, it becomes important :)
I know Cognito has basically said this already, and I know I'm 2 years late but it's just so that you can see the functional group, and for carboxylic acids, that would be -COOH

where is the maths????????????
@@thanansayanbalachandran6081 here now mate
really needed this for my upcoming exam thankss
There maybe a typo in the description; 'carbonates' should be replaced with 'alcohols' for how carboxylic acids are made
how to remember the symbols for butanol etc
at 1:16 should it be called a reversible reaction arrow? Equilibrium is slightly different. I may be wrong tho :)
i think its because only a reversible reaction has equillibriam
thanx cognito. its so helpful
I like your explanations

2:42 i dont understand why there are only 8 hydrogen atoms in butanoic acid... arent there supposed to be 9 hydrogen atoms because butanol had 9???
I'm not sure either, maybe it was just a mistake. But I think that it's the way the oxidising agent makes it lose some hydrogens.
The oxidising agent replaces one Hydrogen atom and replaces it with oxygen....as u can see in the reaction...the product has a O2 with a double bond
Why does the chave double bond
thanks a lot man
What about palmitic acid
Thank you so much 💓

I didn't get how at first that in methane hiw H came before COOH anf CH3 before COOH

Video #69? Nice.
For example in Ethanoic acid, the formula is CH3OOH, why don't you just put the hydrogen on the end with the CH3 in the start and write CH4OO instead?
