There is something therapeutic about just closing your eyes nodding your head and just living in the music. John Moreland has a style that lives and breathes that. Such a welcomed voice in the music landscape of today.

Most of the stars of country music hail from Nashville or at least they come through Nashville...I believe John might be using Nashville as metaphor (and I believe in a broader sense it's just supposed be mean the music industry at large) for the big act or the big show were the biggest players in the game are...and that are many people playing the game (charmers) and so many in fact that they're drowning out the biggest thing in the sky uhmm the (Nashville) Moon and it's a bunch of noise...So he's saying let em' have it...they can have that shit!... My name's John and I hail from Tulsa County, Oklahoma and I'm here to talk to you (listener). I want to tell you things that are specific, special, and particular about me that I believe are universal to us all and I'm going to tell them to you my way. So Hang him up in the less decorated skies over Tulsa County...I'll be the first...And I think with Indian Nation Sky...that might perhaps be a reference to Oklahoma and the Native American influence in the area (I can't speak to this one personally just something I suspect) but I think more importantly he's saying he's going to strive to be the kind of musician that fits into a group of people that smaller and/or marginalized sometimes forgotten. That's where he feels like he belongs and who he can speak for and to...or something like that...mehby...(Shrugs)

John Moreland is one of my faves. I talk about Isbell a lot but your review of Moreland's You Don't Care for me Enough to Cry was the reason I found your channel in the first place. Then I noticed you had a couple Isbell songs so I stayed. Is it safe to assume the next song is Break my Heart Sweetly or No One Gives A Damn About Songs Anymore?
Oh..the 3-story library? It's just proof of civilization. (I know you know what I did there..lol...but no worries! I'm too damn old to argue like i did 25 years ago.)

Keeping this as brief as I can, I think John is talking to a lady friend about a visionary journey he experienced. This newfound perspective allows him to straddle worlds...he sees the languishment of the mundane, as well as the entrancing dance of the profound swirling in the stars. The acknowledgment of his carnal connection to the earth and more specifically to Oklahoma, is shown in his vision. This helps center his reality... the weight of his mortality is momentarily suspended and he experiences something only glimpsed by the mystics. I think most of the songs on this album share a common theme of seeing his home in this new light and expressing his new depth of love for it.

I've lived in OK off and on most of my life, born and raised here. Oklahoma has a lot of Native American territories, reservations, and tribal governmental buildings - most of the land was bought from or owned by Native Americans as per certain treaties. The Indian Nation Turnpike goes through Tulsa, as well.
That being said, from my personal emotional experience - there's something about central and southeast Oklahoma at night - the skies are pretty fantastic. There's not a lot of light pollution out this way, but there's just enough civilization that you can go and have a drink. The stars are bright, even in the city, downtown McAlester or even in Tulsa - you can still make out the stars.
I've lived in places like Seattle Washington, where the mountains were never far away and the trees were tall and there was a sea of people. Still, I used to long for the quiet, rolling hills and deciduous forests and familiarity of the evening sky, purples and pinks - like an indian paintbrush flower, striped across the sky.
