+MGC 996 and speaking of staying true, RUclipsr Antfish did Star Platinum's voice crack in his abridged series as well for the same spot in the same scene. So the voice crack exists in the original Japanese audio, the English dub, and in the abridged version.
On a side note, not sure why a voice crack is so bad, just like with the re-dubbing in Dragon Ball Z Kai, where Sean Schemmel's voice cracks when Goku first goes super saiyan. I feel it adds realism and depth to the acting, the emotion is more powerful and raw, and it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it's better.

The OVA version of the DIO fight had some really cool stuff, like DIO seemingly teleporting around in complete silence. It does a good job showing how scary The World actually is without DIO's added flare, it's so sudden and eerie.

I'm also impressed by the modern Jojo anime's animation as well, actually. Most of the Stardust Crusaders' s fights were very cool and the animators did a great job animating them with consistently good quality, considering there would be more time constraint because of weekly episode format and the TV budget might not be as high as the OVA's.
It would be great if Jojo has some animated movies with standalone stories like One Piece and Naruto, with higher budget the animation would be dope as hell!

of course. erina uses dio's coffin to live through the explosion yet dio uses it to hide at the bottom of the ocean. joseph couldn't of been born if dio used the coffin to escape as erina would've died in the explosion.

The silence is for actually feeling the moment. Seeing someone dying in real time without any music in jojo makes you feel horrible instead of making you saying "ahh" and getting really upset that your favourite character died.

On July 29th, the dub of Stardust Crusaders is airing on Toonami and, from the looks of things, it'll be using the Test Dub for at least the first three episodes which is fine by me because the Test Dub is actually pretty good. So at least there'll be a decent dub of this arc at last.

I feel like the silence adds to the realism, for instance: I highly doubt Jotaro heard any music while he fought DIO, or heard loud bass whenever DIO teleported. While I enjoy both, the OVA is interesting as to how it brings you into the pov of a character, instead of a viewer. (to add to the pov thing there is not announcer or narrator in the OVA, it's just inner thoughts of the characters themselves, and while yes, it gets the point across. It's just a subtle detail I thought was neat.)

OVA's silence is so scary, it can actually pass off as a nerve-wrecking horror thriller.
Idk, personally I think there was nothing wrong with the Dio voice in the OVA. The problem is that we were royally spoiled by how perfectly on point anime Dio is, that it makes OVA Dio sound really wrong in comparison because of how differently they are handled.
OVA Dio seems slow and deliberate, calm, filled with class and refined in a way that speaks down to those who he talks to
Anime Dio is almost flamboyant in a terrifyingly dramatic and charismatic manner, as if screaming to the world he's that superior to everything he sees, yet still retaining that immediate sense of charisma that makes such a tone feel deserved to be taken.
Anime Dio is definitely superior, but OVA's alternate handling of Dio's personality really feels like it takes up the idea of Dio's origins in being raised to be part of the English Upper Class. Both are good.

Anime:Adapted literally everything From the goofy to the serious.( It's a TV SERIES) Animation looks consistently good but not OVA good(You see what I'm getting at here?) Literally all Voice actors on point. Sound effects and music are nice. Cool directing for the episodes Like Sun or Death 13 or Judgement.

My biggest problem with the OVA is its complete lack of the over the top stylishness that JJBA is known for. There's no manly posing, no (M E N A C I N G) filters, no bright colors, no iconic high power music, etc. The animation quality is arguably better, but that doesn't really matter when all the stuff being animated is bland af. The whole OVA just feels like your typical excessively bloody 90's anime.

Carl Bloke No it gives a somewhat different take to it. I and everyone at the end of the day can appreciate that. It's not like it was the only attempt to adapt the show. Nobody ever thought it would be the last. It's different, chill. JoJo can be a serious anime sometimes too, this version just focuses on that seriousness a bit more. It's not a total divorce from the source material entirely. It's still cheesey, unusual, and unpredictable. And it did some key scenes right. If Dio vs Jotaro sucked, if Darby vs the Joestars sucked and so on, THEN it would have been a disrespect. Cause it would have been a mishandlement of the material.

OVA was actually my first introduction to Jojo aside from occasional memes. I think the strongest point in it is the atmosphere and tension it creates. In the Geb (water stand) fight for instance, while the modern adaptation was free with its action, music and sound effects, in the OVA there are many silent moments that emphasize what our heroes are going through, having to avoid any noise to stay safe. It basically sucks you in, and you find yourself holding your breath with the characters.
Also some of the merged plot and omitted enemies made sense to me. The tobacco trick worked better with a more intimidating enemy, and most of the early opponents simply sucked IMO.

I didn't really enjoy this review. It seemed rather surface-level. Glossing over the animation in one sentence was quite strange to me considering the vast differences between the two series. I also feel the video didn't really talk about the differences in tone thanks to the music and theming and criticised a lot of strangely inconsequential details without elaborating on their significance. Star Platinum's voice crack during his massive throw was a really strange critique to me.
The rest of the video was relatively insightful but didn't really discuss the differences to any depth aside from recounting the changes.

To be honest, I like how you go over the OVA without calling it horrible; you decide to list out the good things about it and some of the bad, but you don't call it a failure. For that, I show respect for you.

I think Avdol's death is better in the OVA. It sets a precedent on how seriously we should be taking the villains at this point. Yeah, pacing is bad, but set that aside it's way better than having some random vampire minion get placed in the coffin. You fear for their lives because it is one of them put in that situation, and that fear is justified when Avdol gets so easily killed. I watched the OVA first. It was my only exposure to Jojo at the time. I didn't know what Dio's stand did let alone know that he was a vampire, and it was chilling and scary to see the characters I liked seemingly outclassed and outmatched. Iggy's death was also equally shocking and messed up to me. It felt gross to see someone doing that to a dog. Dio felt like a threat, which is something I think the new adaptation fails to do. Also, I know everyone makes fun of the Polneraff noises he makes when Kakyoin gets his eye's slashed, but to me that sounds like he's really desperate and that he cares his friend got hurt. I genuinely thought Kakyoin was going to be blind for the rest of the OVA at that point because of how seriously Polneraff acted when he got hurt. I was like fuck, these stands in Egypt are serious business. The stakes felt real. In the new adaptation, I didn't take it as seriously. One because I knew the outcome of everything now, and two because the tone wasn't as menacing. I think the OVA had a better atmosphere in general, it felt dirty and darker and more like the Stardust Crusaders were stepping into something that was way above their heads. In the new adaptation I felt like Jotaro was just going to crush everyone with Star Platinum's fists no sweat, I never feared for them at all, and I'm not saying it's worse. I'm just saying the OVA made me feel different and is what made me love these characters in the first place, and I think it doesn't deserve all the hate it gets. Also I think the Darby scene is better in the OVA.

Its a good introduction to the series and a decent OVA for the 90''s but it fails to capture why Jojo is Jojo.
It becomes this generic dark toned anime that everyone in the 90's was sporting, not that that's a bad thing (the reason I got into Hunter X Hunter was because the old anime made the Hunter Exam and Zoldyck Mansion arc look way darker than they needed to be) but again, it's not really what Jojo was about.
The OVA was the only thing Jojo we had for a while. That's why it had this cult of fans.
I actually really think the OVA is hilarious and don't mind it really, but then again I'm probably biased because Part 3 is my favorite JoJo series at the moment.
Honestly It's still a pretty bad OVA and in no way ever holds a candle to the modern adaptation and doesn't do anything to actually capture what made Jojo great but it is the fun kind of terrible with memorable quotable things that make it hilarious
I did heard that the official voice of Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and Toadsworth (Charles Martinet) was in the OVA dub as the second Pilot and Wilson Phillips.
I actually feel like the lack of music added to the tension. it made it VERY different from what we expected from jojo, but I kind of like how realistically tense it is.

I also like that silence in the final fight. It creates a stronger bond between the audience and the villain. It shows us his feelings more clearly without trying to mask any mistakes with an awesome soundtrack. It just makes me feel more complete for some reason.

OVA so much darker and gorier. I love it. Avdol’s death terrified me. Realizing that Dio had used the world to put him in the coffin and before they could realize what was going on Avdol see’s Vanilla Ice descending from the ceiling pushes Polnareff out of the way and gets absolutely obliterated. While VI slowly rises from the hole so menacingly. *chef’s kiss* Iggy’s death had me about to cry I could feel the pain in Polnareff’s voice and it made it all the more satisfying seeing him cut VI’s head in half. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but man I love the OVA over the newer one, that’s just me.
I like the OVA. I don't care that it's not faithful, I like it on its own merits.
@3rd Way What do we realistically want in an adaptation? (Also it seems like that faithful claim is made on the basis that the creators *could have* made the OVA faithful back in the 90s. You know the 90s, a time before 2014 when the anime adaptation was released)
@3rd Way That's usually how it works. It may be unfair (I believe people want a degree of fairness in many things) but the majority doesn't care.

I do like the Dio vs Jotaro fight form the OVA more.
1. It hast this drawback to the beginning with SP acting on it's own (stopping the bullet and later on block The Worlds punched in frozen time) and it is there where Jotaro understands the he can also use the time stop, where in the anime he just suddenly did it.
I also never liked the magnet trick since it just opens up so many question about how the time stop works... Why the magnetic force of earht not working, but some magnets Jotaro had on him for no reason?
2. There is just more going on in the OVA.
In the OVA, Dio sends Jotaro flying into a train where he ripped people into pieces.
Jotaro throws a tower at Dio
Dio send Jotaro to the ground of the ocean with a yacht
3. The OVA does not have them slowly walking around or standing(to monoluge for over a minute) still for no reason.
For example, hen Polnareff jumps Dio while Jotaro is playing dead, in the anime Dio stops time, punches polnareff (insteasd of just killing him) and slowly walks up to him, until jotaro moves a finger to get Dio's attention.
In the OVA, Dio is shocked for a moment when his heads get penetrated and it is this moment of distraction Jotaro uses to punch Dio in the head.
4. Dio ends up getting punched into a Butchery instead of a plate selling shop, which explains where got the knives from.
5. Dio did not turn into a completly other character model on sucking Joseph's blood in the OVA
But I never really liked the fight in the anime to begin with.
Dio's inability to just finish them off with the opporunities he had in the anime and the randomness like jotaro suddenly being in the sewers have let me to believe that the fight could have been decided by frozen-Kars crashing down on earth splatting Dio in the process...
But in all the other moments I do prefer the anime, like most people do.
The OVA's fight scene was great as hell. That was one of the coolest fighting animations I've ever seen.

@@thegamerfe8751 In my opinion, it’s not actually a bad take on SDC. I think that this animation, tone, and it’s style is superior to the David Productions version. Only reason why I made this joke when I did a year ago was because it wasn’t accurate to the manga, the voices weren’t as good, and overall, there are more things that DP did better. Although, the final fight between Jotaro and DIO is far superior to the DP version.
Something interesting to note about the dub of this OVA, it was licensed and dubbed by Super Techno Arts, who at that point only ever dubbed a hentai series prior to this. And they shut down in the early 2000's after only dubbing a hentai, this OVA and another obscure anime I can't remember. Also, Charles Martinet AKA the voice actor of Mario and several other Nintendo characters plays Senator Wilson Philips in the dub. It's quite, Bizarre to say the least.
