I visited Hearst Castle in the 1980s... but the best part was the bus driver that drove us up the windy road to the top where the castle is. On the way he said, "If all these twists and turns bother you, just close your eyes. That's what I do... "
We did the Castle tour several years ago .. fantastic! Funny story; as we were touring one the larger rooms, the docent pointed at a huge tapestry and made a few comments about it one of the guests then asked , "where are the originals ?". The docent politely replied, "Madam, these are the originals . " You could hear a pin drop. Another great job, you kids.
Oh that’s so cool! We must’ve seen those same tapestries! Someone in our group also asked about them and the guide told us the Louvre in Paris had the copies and each one had a plaque underneath stating the originals were in San Simeon Hearst Castle. So cool!
Rather than being the passenger, try driving to eliminate motion sickness........my daughter is the same way..........as long as she is driving no problem. Good luck.
From a fellow motion sickness sufferer to another, get a ReliefBand. They’re pricey but if you get a rechargeable one, it will last years. I used it on the winding road along the Amalfi Coast, the twists and turns in the Dolomites, on boats, planes, etc. and it worked well. Love your videos! Keep traveling and enjoying this wonderful world we live in!
My daughter always got sea sick. I kept her in fresh air, fed her saltines and sips of coke. We are not soda lover but it did the trick. Camping in Calif. Safer to use campgrounds.
Glad you guys got a chance to visit the Hearst Castle. I went there 50 years ago. It was owned by William Randolph Hearst as their families summer home. One of the Hearst daughters was kidnapped and held for a massive ransom. There is a massive backstory if you care to read about it. I love ❤️ the way you guys overcome obstacles and come up with alternatives. Great video.
I remember when P. Hearst was kidnapped I was 11. Wow it's funny hearing of an event that this generation most likely has no clue about... does that mean we're getting, dare I say... Old 🤣.
You guys didn’t see Muir Woods just across from Stinson Beach? Fun fact: One of Clint Eastwood’s sons landed on McWay Falls beach (which is off limits to hikers) via the ocean. Even though there is an exorbitant fine for roadside camping in Big Sur there is little enforcement due to lack of manpower.
The NPS only requires permit and fee if you record for commercial use (your you tube channel). For all the rest of us, we are free to take photos snd videos for our personal use.
I live in Sonoma county, about 40min from Stinson beach. It’s one of my favorite surf spots. After watching this, it makes me feel like I really take for granted just how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful region
My husband gets car sick if he isn’t driving. I do most of the driving on straight roads and he does it in the winding ones. Love Big Sur. Was there quite some time ago. I have a sister-in-law that lives in the Morro Bay Area which is also beautiful. Got to see the elephant seals also.
The $63.1 million was for the Hearst "Estate" (not castle) in Beverly Hills (not San Simeon). The estimated value of the Hearst Castle (today) is $5 billion.
I have a hard time with motion sickness and use wristbands with a small plastic bead in it that’s for pressure point on your wrist…it works for me on windy roads. Dramamine is also v effective! Monterey County/Pacific Grove is so incredibly beautiful. Many years ago, I was looking for somewhere our family could travel to and I found Monterey and Pacific Grove. We were going every year and staying and we decided to buy a home there. Big Sur is fantastic…there’s so much life and beauty there. I’m glad you were able to experience it. What a wonderful life!
The Northern California coast is so beautiful! Highway 1 around Big Sur affords some of the most beautiful scenery found anywhere. The redwoods are amazing.
I love to drive and twisty roads don't make me sick unless I'm a passenger. On my first roller coaster ride, I got motion sickness and wondered if it was because I was not in control, as I would be if I were driving. I rode again and held my right foot to the floor, pretending to be in control (with the gas pedal held to the floor) I did not get sick. Maybe you can try something like that - something to feel like you're in control.
About the Redwoods. They are truly the survivors of the forests. Many of the redwoods you got a chance to see in person survived forest fires. That’s why look burnt 🥵 on the outside because they survived the forest fires.
Yes, they have evolved to withstand most fire events. Another interesting fact… they can capture moisture from the air and collect it on their needles, the water then builds up enough that it will then drip down on their roots. Effectively they are creating their own microclimate.
If y’all didn’t know, raisins are from Cali and they do free tours at the Sunmaid raisin factory. It’s near Kingsburg, Ca. You get raisins to try as well. They are so good fresh. Also near there a few miles is the Land O Lakes dairy farm. They do free tours there too. It’s off the Hwy. 198 between Hanford and Visalia. Those are near Kingsburg all with in an hour of one another. That area is the Central Valley and is the farming capital of the world.
Road sickness. Caused by ears and eyes not getting same motion info. Have you tried wrist beads on acupuncture spots? Tried only looking at the road ahead and not looking to the side or reading? Tried driving to keep your eyes on the road? Tried sinus saline spray to open up sinuses? Motion sickness can only be prevented, not really treating it after it hits you.
At certain times of year, the entire beach will be cover with hundreds of elephant seals that make visiting the seal beach really worth a stop. I love the coast highway along the central coast of California I have visited several times including my honeymoon several years ago.
I just heard about the wild zebras near Hearst Castle. Over a hundred of them. The article said if you see one pull over because they travel in packs and there will be more.
We stay at San Simeon State Park up on Washburn where you were at least once a year if not twice a year. It’s only about an hour and a half from our house and we love it. The elephant seals that you are seeing this time of year or nothing in December January February there is not a piece of sand that does not have an elephant seal on it. And you can smell them they stink and are quite loud. We’ve also been to Hearst Castle several times. It’s really too bad Natalie that you get carsick because this is one of my most favorite drives.
San Simeon really is such a beautiful area! 😊 There was a ton of elephant seals when we were there so I’d be interested to see how they fit any more on that beach 😄
We have family in Santa Barbara and will be there from 12/29 - 1/3. Our motorhome will be in Earl Warren Showground, exit 100 off Rt. 101, Calle Real exit. Also 10 miles south of SB is Refugio State Beach, Rincon Parkway then Hobson Beach Park. They are all on old hwy 101 along the coast. Check it our, right on the ocean.
There is nothing more serene than an old-growth redwood forest. Also, near the redwood national park further north, there are great state parks with some of the tallest redwoods.
You should carry ginger chews when you're traveling. Ginger is awesome for motion sickness. I always have ginger chews in my van and as soon as I feel the slightest bit of nausea, I pop one in my mouth and within a minute of sucking on it, I feel way better.
One thing I've learned during my drives are to stop at turn outs and take in the views. SO many times I pass one and then there isn't another one miles and by then the view has changed
What you said about feeling the need to be quiet in the redwoods is how I felt too….they are just so awesome…I always thought I was biased, being a native NorCalian, in that to me no other coastline in the US is more beautiful, but you just affirmed it in what you said about it being the most beautiful you’ve ever seen. I never get enough of seeing, whether in person, or by nice people like you sharing your visit.😊
That huge fine probably stems from past problems. When Little Big Lies was big, the crowds came for selfies on that NorCal bridge (is that the same one you were on?) creating enormous jams. I live in SoCal. A few years ago we had a big natural wildflower bloom. As selfie crowds do, the gaggles drove to the wildflowers and trampled them to take part in how beautiful(ly trampled) they were.
You mentioned Stinson beach ... pretty much raised there ❤️ Tall Redwoods...Muir Woods has an entire forest of very tall Redwoods , Samuel P Taylor State Park as well . Love Big Sur ..I apologize for this State and all it's regulations .drives us crazy..Hearst Castle ...very cool years ago ...no regulations. back then... I'm so happy that your taking your time heading south ... It's such a beautiful coast , I never get tired of seeing it .... happy for you ❤️❤️👍
Hearst Castle is great. California State Park Campgrounds are some of the best in the country. I think you got charged $20 for a dry campground because it was near San Simeon. Usually a State Campground is pretty much running water and showers and fire pits and of course the 'picnic table.' (Have you run into bear boxes yet?) Keep going and as always Welcome to the Hwy 1.
The castle really was awesome! And you’re definitely right about the price! We were originally we’re going to stay at another campground but they were actually booked out for the days we were going to be there.
I pray you all are well, healthy & safe! As I watch the news and see all the rain and flooding in CA and that was the last place we saw you --- Could you maybe drop a line to share with us that you are okay?? Hope to see you back. ❤
I just recently found ya'll's channel and I love your videos so much! You both put a wonderful effort into fun and entertaining videos with a dash of education! While you're out on the coast, if you haven't already, you should visit the Monarch Butterfly Grove! You're there in season and it's absolutely breathtaking to see so many monarchs! I can't wait for the next video! Be safe and have loads of fun. ☺
Glad you two could enjoy the coast here in California! That drive down Big Sur is one of my favorites. Natalie why aren't you taking dramamine for your car sickness?!
Next time look for CALAVERAS BIG TREES STATE PARK East of Stockton. Massive Sequoia, Pines and Redwoods. One stump is 30' across. Will not disappoint. Stunning. Showers & toilets. No electric, sewer or water at sites.
That Highway 1 drive south from Monterey, can test tires and vehicles. We only attempted that drive with a small H. Civic, that we pulled behind the Pace Arrow 27 foot. Stayed at a San Simeon camp place.
@@JimmyandNatalie Agree with you about a larger and heavier rig on Highway 1. We did not take the Fleetwood Pace Arrow M.H. on the winding section of 1, left it at the San Simeon camp ground. We stayed in a overflow camping area, was more primitive, (but could see the ocean when there was no fog / heavy overcast). Needed to run Onan generator to charge batteries during the non-quiet hours, plus run any larger power use appliances, (It was year 1987). (Gen.’s had to be turned off by 8-PM, park rules). Certainly had been a bunch of years ago, glad they still have camping. Needed to meet at the visitor center for the Hearst Castle tours, then they bused us visitors from the Visitor Center up to the castle, (in-order to take one of the several tours offered). Think we took the garden tour, saw several pools. Thanks for the reply, best travel wishes‼️
Hurst Castle is a must visit. There are several different tours, including one at night to see the Castle illuminated. But the question for you two - was the Castle decorated for Christmas? Glad you were happy with your State Park experience. The drive up or down the coast on CA1 is best savored at a slow pace, and have Natalie drive. That, and a dose of ginger root will often help keep the upset at bay. Thanks for sharing.
West Coast is So pretty all along the 101. If you guys get to travel further north you should continue up the 101 and come into Or. I love the coast line here.
Try having Natalie drive on the winding roads. That often alleviates motion sickness. My mom was very susceptible to motion sickness and used this trick for years to keep it at bay.
Hearts estate is. now own Patty, who also 80% of all news paper and untested in TV station. The next town you can Anderson split pea soup. Try it, you'll love it.
Another great video, so many memories brought back for me. There is so much to see but try to make the Thursday night farmers market in SLO town, you are so close. Regardless what you do you will have great scenery (Black stone beach in Cambria, Morro Rock, etc.). Also there are a number of Spanish Missions to see along the way for a change of pace. Thanks again.🌼🌻🏵
Aww I hope you get the car sickness taken care of on the next curvy road. Hwy 1 is no joke. I don’t get car sick and can’t handle that drive either. ~A
That is, by far my favorite stretch of PCH, between Monterey and Morro Bay! Maybe if y'all are still in the area, another cool little dutch inspired little town is Solvang, Ca is worthy of a visit. Merry Christmas!
If you go backpacking on the Lost Coast up north, you can camp right near beach where a huge rookery of elephant seals spend the winter for birthing season. They get really loud at night and the moms don't leave the beach for months and survive just on stored fat. Wish I could upload some pix and video here...
I get car sick all the time but when I drive I am fine. Try driving on curvy roads I think it will help. Love you two Have fun Merry Christmas, and God Bless
Nethercutt museum in Sylmar CA. (LA area). Free. Need reservations. Known for very expensive cars, much more than just that. They have an organ that shakes the entire building. Pismo state beach is a great campground, if you can get in.
If you drive you won’t get car sick. Also buy some Ginger Chews and peppermint and chew on them and don’t try to read while the van is moving. Just a few tips I picked up. You guys be safe and have a good time!! 😊
50yrs,,,, no I think it was more like 60yrs ago we camped in the Redwoods, drove through a tree they cut a tunnel in for the road, tree still lives I think,,,,, You know that if they allowed overnight parking/camping on Hwy 1, it would be solid broken down RV's I did a motorcycle trip from LA to Portland on nothing but coast road when I was about 20yrs old,,,,yeah, again 50yrs ago. Great channel, you guys got class, take care and stay safe.
I did not stop and tour the castle, but I looked up from the road and saw a herd of zebras running across the hills, and was told they belonged to Hearst Castle
The van fits you two, safe travels. True story, when our family visited Hearst Castle we arrived early, visitors were gathering at the door, our family was a ways back when a groundskeeper approached us and said "watch this" and turned on the lawn sprinklers, sending all running for cover. Beautiful place. (1968)
Great video as always. Bummer you had to break your streak. One of my daughters (now adult) gets car sick. She has some wrist bands she wears to help. She played college sports and wore them on the bus.
Highway 1 is definitely not for folks who get car sick. Dramamine is a must. But it is gorgeous on a nice day. Many years ago I drove Highway 1 from Eureka, California to San Francisco. I was driving a pick up truck.
You might try closing one eye on those winding roads. Try it with each eye. Sometimes it is caused by the eyes natural stereo vision.. If it works buy a patch for that eye.
So sorry you felt car sick, but so glad you stopped to show us the views!!!! Thanks
I visited Hearst Castle in the 1980s... but the best part was the bus driver that drove us up the windy road to the top where the castle is. On the way he said, "If all these twists and turns bother you, just close your eyes. That's what I do... "

Yes, let her drive.
I'm the same way and Dramamine can help if you take it early on best of luck!!
If I drive I don’t get sick either!!!!
I am that way as well got car sick as a kid, got glasses and it was not as bad
But to this day I do not like the back seat
You can feel the road rather than respond to the motion.
From a fellow motion sickness sufferer to another, get a ReliefBand. They’re pricey but if you get a rechargeable one, it will last years. I agree. The Sequoia trees were more impressive to me.
I was there back in the 70s, it was an impressive experience.

When the sign says “No buses” they are referring to Tourist Buses because too many have gotten stuck in tight turns and other places.
We had the same reaction when we saw the redwoods! It’s such a cool spot. ❤
Citizen Kane is a slightly-fictionalized version of Hearst's life (and also a really really cool movie).
You guys didn’t see Muir Woods just across from Stinson Beach?

I've heard of seals do their roaring kinda thing, but never heard of them "Burping" at each other. Merry Christmas to you Jimmy & Natalie. Be safe.
I truly feel your pain Natalie, I’ve had motion sickness my whole life. As I’m now much older it doesn’t take much to set me off. Stay safe out there

Nethercutt museum in Sylmar CA. (LA area). Free. Need reservations. Known for very expensive cars, much more than just that. They have an organ that shakes the entire building. Pismo state beach is a great campground, if you can get in.
Enjoy California coast stop in Pismo beach and see the gazebo in the middle of the water it’s beautiful.
Love your videos and Cali is one of my favorite states. Ugh no about the pothole!
Thanks Paula! 💚 That pothole gave us a bit of a headache, but thankfully it’s all good now! Cali is one of our favorites too!! 😄🥰
Really enjoying youre vids. Thankyou.
If you drive you won’t get car sick. Also buy some Ginger Chews and peppermint and chew on them and don’t try to read while the van is moving. Just a few tips I picked up.
You guys be safe and have a good time!! 😊
50yrs,,,, no I think it was more like 60yrs ago we camped in the Redwoods, drove through a tree they cut a tunnel in for the road, tree still lives I think,,,,,
You know that if they allowed overnight parking/camping on Hwy 1, it would be solid broken down RV's
I did a motorcycle trip from LA to Portland on nothing but coast road when I was about 20yrs old,,,,yeah, again 50yrs ago.
Great channel, you guys got class, take care and stay safe.
Another neat video guys. Really like seeing all the places you visit. Keep up the great work and Merry Christmas!!!
Try prescription motion sickness patches
Hi guys another top video full of content and well informed video all the best and stay safe out there
Aw, thank you so much!! 💚
I've seen Hearst castle years ago.
Must agree with you. Fantastic roads and very seanic. Thanks again for going the Extra mile and showing us. Wish I was there..
Great video as always. Bummer you had to break your streak.
One of my daughters (now adult) gets car sick. She has some wrist bands she wears to help. She played college sports and wore them on the bus.
Last time I visited the castle was in the 70s.
Natile I get car sick too try ginger tea first or while or warm ginger ale.
🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Awesome stuff guys
Thanks!! 😊💚
Awesome videos sorry I’m so late
You two are adorable and compliment each other! Oh--and your videos are awesome!!
Stop at any store to get wrist bands that stop motion sickness. Wife uses them and they work. Next alternative is to drive.
Natalie you are so right that drive has to be one of the best in the US.
