- Owned a few NA miatas and have cleaned the rain rails and they do rust butCouldnt find much online on the 2016 and newer ND when my top would not drain properly. I work at a Mazda dealer and they never preformed it but did have information on how to get to it. Took it apart to find out how it works and hopefully helps any of you with DIY preventative Maintenance! If you have any questions please let me know!
Excellent video thank you. The other videos were pretty vague, your is spot on. Thanks again.
Underrated and important
I agree, this is the best way to make sure it doesnt start having an issue!
Also drains across to just under the seatbelt ratchet. There is a hole that runs down that you may also have to clean out.
Yes, cleaning this tube is also needed
Ours has a pushpin over the hole which is really awkward to get at, even eith the seat belt roller pulled out fully... is there an easy way to remove the pushpin without it disappearing?
@@offal12 I have the same issue, did you figure it out?
Thx for the tips on this. Love your spec and wheels....gorgeous! Love the red top (almost went bkack/cherry but bought ND2 Club instead).
Not a userfriendly way compared to the NC (no parts removal required), but thanks for this tutorial! I drive a 2018 2.0 Sport Recaro and very happy with it.
Love that color combo!
Thank you! Had no clue that was even there .
Brilliant clear video, thanks 🙂
So easy you can check it every oil change.
thx man. will try it asap.
Thank you for the video! How many washes would you say before looking into this filter/trap? I had a few rainfalls and i washed my car a few times since I purchased last year. Or my question is, should I empty it as often as I wash my car?
Wouldnt hurt to check every year.
Mazda should have made this more accessible without removing any trim pieces.
Man it’s rank. The NA is so much easier.
Very helpful.
Thank you.
Great explanation sir but what about that little foam filter element? Should it be replaced or does just clean up too?
Yeah, I had the same question. What's the point of the foam if there's a basket above?
May I ask the information of your wheel? It’s beautiful!
Thank you for this info !
Why not just leave all the parts off and vacuum it out every fall?
I got the same but black paint
What kind of wheels are those? They are beautiful
These are the Konig Ampliform! Would highly recommend!
nice wheels.what size are those wheels and tires?
Sorry for the late response, these were 225/45/18 wheel was 18x8
does this also apply to the RF?
Yes, the RF has drains at the rear windows that feed to drains inside the car like the soft-top
If this gets clogged, might it cause the floor pan to flood? That happened to my son’s Miata, after a torrential rain.
It can back up and cause water to sneak in for sure. I see it happen with all gen Miata’s after time. The best thing you can do is to clean the drains then run a hose over the roof and check to see if there are other leaks. We have them come in from time to time and thats how we start the diagnosis.
There are "insect remover" sponges with a similar structure & pore size ... should not be a problem to quickly make a set of new ones.
Question: The rubber piece that catches the gunk, can you order a replacement from the Mazda dealership when needed?
Did you find the answer? Sorry been a while since i looked at this video
How long does it usually take for the drains to be clogged?
Honestly depends on where you park, i unfortunately had to be near a tree which after a year had quite a bit of debris
How often do I do this
It wouldn’t hurt to check every year depending on where you park your car. If in a garage I wouldnt stress about it for quite some time unless you see signs of the water not draining where the top meets the door.
Actually, the easiest way is to remove the carpet piece, then plastic access piece, then remove the black drain tube and snake it from the bottom.
Why didn't you stop the engine, when you take a video..
July In NC gets very hot so had the ac on as I already cleaned it and only quickly took it back apart for the video
It’s Kermit!

What suspension setup do you have? It looks pretty low.
