- Tea is the most popular beverage in the world, first cultivated over 6,000 years ago in ancient China. Shunan Teng is on a mission to experience it in its most authentic, historic form. Her love for tea knows no bounds, as she travels halfway around the world, up steep mountains and through remote jungles in search of the world’s oldest tea trees. Now, through Tea Drunk, a teahouse in New York City, she’s giving others the opportunity to be steeped in history.

This tea variety is known as "assamica" scientifically, yet ironically the tea trees in Assam has been interbreed with the tea "sinica" introduced from Southeast China by the British colonizers who believe the "assamica" tea doesn't taste good. So right now if you want some genuine "assamica" tea that has not been interbreed with the "sinica" tea, you have to go to China to find them.

Haha. As a self proclaimed tea head, I'd can say that the tea is actually not that expensive. I mean it's expensive compared to your regular teabag from the supermarket and expensive compared to other hand picked tea leaves, but it's not close to $1k per cup. Rather it's about $40 for 28grams. 4grams goes into a small gaiwan pot so you can math it out to be around $6 a pot. The teas that get expensive are the ones that sit in warehouses and ferment for decades and is so eye-watering-ly expensive that it makes wine look poor by comparison. If I remember correctly, the most expensive was a Fujianese (Fujian is a province/territory in china) tea, that sold at $28,000 per 20 grams (little more than half an ounce!). It's 30 times it's own weight in gold. That's not the funny part of that either... It's been described as "[looking]fit for a beggar, priced for an emperor, and heart of a buddha." Wild, huh?

Um where did you get that it’s ‘assamica’ tea? And also how is it interbred with tea introduced from the British? This tea is harvested in the forests of Yunnan. They don’t breed tea trees there, all the trees usually just grow in the forests on their own. It’s not a tea plantation. Not to mention, in the video it says these trees are already hundreds of years old.....likely before the British trees got to China.
@@RedrosePhoenixSophiaFLi i think they're referring to the "assamica" (large leaf) variety of tea which has different variants in Yunnan and Assam. They're just saying that the Assam variant tends to be lower quality and to get really good Assamica, ironically, you have to go to Yunnan (where Assamica originates)
@@RedrosePhoenixSophiaFLi To build on what Gianmarco and the original commenter said, there are two major varieties of Camellia sinensis (the tea plant), known as large leaf and small leaf, or assamica and sinensis, respectively. The native plants grown in the forests of Yunnan belong to this “big leaf” or assamica variety.

@@notablecarrot2831 I wouldn't say assamica tea in Assam to be "lower quality". It's just mixed, not pure, somewhat British/Sinicized. I believe there may be some way if you can visit an indigenous tribal village to get some authentic _assamica_ tea in India but most likely you wouldn't. Thus (ironically) the easiest way to find the authentic unsinicized assamica tea would be in China.
Tea picking is an intimate process that I would be interested in from the start of the process. Teavana was as close as I got, i miss that place.

A great company to look at is Yunnan Sourcing, which specializes in pu-erh, with sheng pu-erh being the tea showcased in the video.

If you’ve old ever had green tea or popular western teas such as earl grey I highly recommend trying some pu’erh, red (aka chinese black tea), or maybe oolong. If you’re in the USA yunnan.us is a good website with good prices for beginners. Just remember high quality tea is cheaper than it seems. You typically steep it multiple times and sometimes up to 30 steeps. If you use reddit r/tea has some useful links to more resources. Enjoy!

Well why not promote loose tea leaf rather then tea bags. One research showed that most of the teabags are composed of plastic materials so it's better to drink loose tea for health and well as environment.
in most asian countries, tea is mixed straight with hot water in a pot or grinded to a paste. we dont usually use teabags in large uses because its costly.

Ignorance is bliss. To only know that the best tea is our local brew is absolute joy. That once I tasted something that could be beyond my daily brew would only give me deep pain of cravings. Addiction to pleasure is a terrible thing...the opium war should have been educating enough.

@@user-ti3su6np8r thanks. I live in Malaysia. I drank a delicious chinese tea once at a roadside shop. No sugar, no flavouring, just tea. It was very delicious and strangely sweet. That was about 20 years ago. Since then I could never find the same taste anywhere.
Can you recommend me any names of the tea? It's difficult to find authentic stuff here as in southeast Asia is the crossroad of culture, the tea is also mixed. So I get confused a lot. I even thought matcha was green tea before realizing it's a Japanese tea.

Tea Drunk. I went there once a couple years ago or so with my wife. What an expensive disappointment. Girl working there did not have a passion for tea. Didn't know anything about tea or seemingly care. The tea itself was way overpriced for the quality too. Now I'm not saying the owner isn't genuine and that she doesn't source good tea at all. But as avid tea drinkers we were sorely disappointed. Even Harney and Sons had better tea and for less cost. If you want good quality Yunnan tea from ancient tea trees just buy from Yunnan Sourcing.

Brick and mortars(especially in the west) are typically pretty expensive relative to the quality(you can definitely find good tea in some depending on where you look, but it’ll come at a premium). It is nice to just sit down in a communal teahouse environment drinking dancongs though
