I think what they meant was to appeal to a general audience. if it had been too fantasy-oriented it would not have been as successful in my opinion. But with the birth of the dragons and return of the White Walkers, it was like the rise of the return of magic so to speak so they could have added more magic as the show progressed. Because at this point the audience had been eased in into the fantasy element and were ready to accept it. But they did the opposite, they did less and less as it advanced and it didn't make any sense. Even those who are not big on fantasy wished the Night King and the WW would have been better explored in the last season.

    • @gingerg85
      @gingerg85 4 года назад +20

@@johnnyskinwalker4095 so why didn't they say "We want to appeal to as wide an audience as possible," rather than singling out "mothers and football players?" It's the implication of bias against the two groups they mentioned that's problematic, not the rate at which they introduced fantastical elements in the show. Do not dismiss who they specifically single out here; it really demonstrates an inherent sexism that they think that fantasy doesn't appeal to "mothers." I won't speak to the use of "footballers" as I assume they meant in the American sense and I'm European so we have a very different cultural and social context (and game) for them. But generally stating that people who are interested in or play sports wouldn't be attracted to a show with fantasy elements highlights their prejudices and stereotyping. They said that at the end of the run without a hint of awareness for the audience they'd amassed. Shame.

Favorite: Ned telling Yoren that Arya was on the Baelor statue, which saved her life. I thought it was beautiful to give that to Ned in his last moments. Thinking of others as opposed to himself while facing imminent death is consistent with everything we know of Ned, so the change made sense. Unlike the others D&D would institute.
Least Favorite: The entire portrayal of Dorne. Doran Martell was portrayed as a total incompetent with no plan for House Martell. No Arianne/queen maker plot, no Darkstar (who I think is Oberyn's secret son), no Quentyn, no Sarella/Alleras, no epic scene from Areo Hotah foiling Arianne's plot, no addressing if Daenerys actually lived there for a portion of her life, no addressing Prince Lewyn's paramour, not even getting across that Dorne is more than just the Water Gardens...Was Qyburn working for Oberyn/Dorne the whole time because the Bloody Mummers were actually Oberyn's sellsword company? But, I will say this...In AFFC, it's indirectly established that Qyburn is working for Dorne. To placate House Martell, Cersei has Qyburn prepare the Mountain's head to send to Prince Doran. After she initially gives the order, the two discuss it again and Qyburn specifically says something about preparing a skull (as opposed to a head). Now Cersei hears him, but walks away from the discussion still thinking Dorne is being sent Gregor's head. Fast forward to the feast at Sunspear where it's presented to House Martell. It turns out, Qyburn did indeed send a skull, not a head. What's interesting is that it's noted that the dessert of the evening are sugar-spun skulls w/jelly filling. Ask yourself, how would the cooks know to make skulls and not heads? A head is what was expected, after all. The only person who knew that House Martell was getting a skull and not a head was Qyburn. So for the cooks to have known to prepare skulls means someone in House Martell (Doran) was tipped off about what they were getting. Qyburn is the only person who could've done it because he's the one who took the liberty to prepare a skull, not a head.

In the books she has a great mind for battle strategy, she is also bending over backwards to be diplomatic. She doesnt go around screaming that she is going to burn cities to the ground, nor does she feed anyone to her dragons. In the show, battle strategis where planned by her male advicers. The show also portrays her as someone needing to be reigned in by her advicers, when in the books it's the other way around.
The other changes i hated in the show was the whitewashing of Tyrion, Varys,Jorah and to some extent Jon Snow. What they did with Barristan Selmy was bad,the same with stannis.

Exactly, it was Dany advisers who were militaristic, Dany had to hold them back, but the show had it the other way around. Dany didn't threaten the leaders of Quarte with fire and blood, that scene was a complete invention from the show, Dany didn't feed people to her dragons, again that was on the show only. And don't get me started on Dany as a miliary strategist, she single handedly planned the Invasion of meereen by herself, but the show wanted to give that accomplishments to the men around her. Tyrion and Jon telling Dany to not invade kingslanding on the show, like WTF is going on here. Tyrion hated the people of kingslanding, he threatened to poison them all. Book Tyrion is a complete nutcase in ADWD and Jon was whitewashed into saint Jon the 3rd. I hope D&D and their family's live long and miserable lives.

"In the books she has a great mind for battle strategy, she is also bending over backwards to be diplomatic."
I think part of the great tragedy from the books is that Dany has almost (I think Astapor is kind of an exception) always been trying the diplomatic option first. With Viserys, with Qarth (both the Warlocks and the city's rulers), with Yunkai, and with Meereen, and she almost always has something bad happen (or at least gets few good results) when she tries the peaceful route, but has great success when she uses violence. That's why she resigns herself to "Fire and Blood" in her last chapter in ADWD, which will likely be a problem for her when she arrives in Westeros and mistrusts diplomacy.

There are many changes from the books that bother me, but I am only going to mention here two. The connection that the Stark kids have with their wolves. In the books they were basically another part of them. Connected souls. When Lady was killed her soul joined with her Stark, Sansa would dream about her long after. As if Lady was visiting her. Bran warged Summer and saved Jon. The other change, my biggest annoyance, was to the character of Daenerys. In the show they made her weak, dependent and over emotional. They also got rid of many instances and scenes that showed how badass and independent she was so they could start paving the way for her going mental. I am not too disappointed with the changes they did to Tyrion, until the last seasons where he became an idiot. In the books he was so selfish and awful. A total user of people. I actually liked him in the show, for awhile.

I can see the rationale behind some changes like Talisa replacing Jeyne Westerling because I think for non-book readers, it's easier to understand recklessly breaking a sworn oath for love as opposed to shielding the honor of a girl he barely knew over his own, which is what book Rob stupidly did. I think the Talisa line actually makes Rob more sympathetic despite wildly conflicting with the tragic flaw of his book character. I also get why they watered down the darkness of characters like Tyrion and Catelyn and even Cersei to an extent -- it would've been extremely difficult to develop them as not purely villains on screen without more complex internal dialogue from the books. I agree with everything else though, the wolves being reduced to pound puppies instead of magical extensions of the Stark kids, the entirety of Dorne, Ros replacing Chataya and Alayayah, dumbed down Euron/Iron Islands, Quaithe as a pointless cameo and the beyond priceless Lady Sansa being literally given away to the Boltons for NOTHING...ugh. The show gave the character the decision to say no, I don't care if you want to help me, or you're a big warrior woman (which would surely be a cool curiosity of Arya's if they had met considering Arya's "tomboyishness").
In the books, Arya feels she has no other choice but to run to Braavos and be independent.

Lady Gray , quite the considerable list here if we try to name them all , by i will try to name a few. Not including fAegon to me i didnt care for , could have added another layer of intrigue , interest and complexity to the show narrative and considering ADwD , where fAegon was introduced , came out just after S1 allowed ample time for the TV series to include him at some point. Looking at that throw away mess rubbish that was S5 , they would have been much better served introducing fAegon than that Dornish mess they gave us that season. Which leads to another book to show change that was dross , the show's handling of Dorne / Dornish plot , taking a well thought out , intricate , integral , complex book plot and just flushing it down the toilet the way the show did , omitting many key characters associated with Dorne in the process.
No Stoneheart was another bad choice , GRRM likes his fair share of horror elements so we miss out on good one of that there and just an interesting arc to omit. Would have liked to see the books' version of Coldhands instead combining him and Benjen as the show did. Not emphasizing the other Stark's warging abilities , the how & the lack of gravitas with Barrsitan's death , show's spin on Robb's so called dishonor where in the books he is somewhat taken advantage of by Jeyne after being injured and learning of the supposed death of his younger brothers at the hands of a former ally and friend. I could go on and on there are many more ; and with the last two books we will likely see more and more divergences that will cast and even worse light on the show.

Worst change: leaving out warging. One of my favorite aspects of the books is the connection between the wargs and their animals (starks and direwolves, Dany and Drogon, sixskins and his group, etc.).
Best change: simplifying the Rob and Taleesa/Jeyne story. Robs story was always my least favorite, and for the show it made sense to me to keep it simple since those characters weren't going all the way through to the end. HOWEVER, I could have done without the show stabbing a pregnant woman. 🤷‍♀️ 😂
Love your videos girl! You keep me laughing with your commentary cause it's always what I'm thinking 😂❤

I hated how Arya was changed from her first episode onward. All complexity was stripped away from her. She only got worse as she went on.

This could easily be a 5 hour vid 😂 the show writing was crap after season 4. Worst changes: Changing Cat & Ned's positions on whether Ned should go to Kings Landing, pointless. Giving Jaime dyslexia, pointless. Changing Jeyne to Talisa, pointless. Dorne....... 🤦‍♂️Euron..... 🤦‍♂️Sansa in Winterfell 🙄🤦‍♂️ but the worst crime of all was what they did to The One True King 🤬🤬🤬

There were a lot of changes that I didn't like, but I understood in light of the complications of adapting the story to the restrictions of TV. The changes that irritate me most are ones that could just as easily happened as it did in the books, not taking more time, not requiring excessive extra detail, etc. My number one - in the show, Jaime doesn't tell Tyrion the truth about Tysha. Without that detail, which had *already been set up,* Tyrion's actions afterward make no sense. The Tysha twist gives Tyrion the justification to make the insane decision to risk capture to get revenge on Tywin. And taking out Tysha also robs the Jaime-Tyrion relationship of depth and complication. I can't think of another totally unnecessary change with such impact on character motivation. I do agree that Talisa-Jayne could have been pulled of in the same amount off time they spent on the invented line. It's the smallness of the Tysha change that makes it so annoying to me.

It is suggest that Tysha was a gold digger in that world of HBO TV. That Jamie and Tywin did pay her to have sex with Tyrion, but when the audience ask David and Dan if this true? they just said we have no idea if Tysha was a hooker or not. They wanted the audience focus on Shae and Tyrion.

The way I view the HBO TV show A Game of Thrones is as if that show is in a parallel universe to the world George R. R. Martin's books dwell. Does anyone remember Dallas, the primetime TV soap opera with a character called, JR? Remember when one whole season played out with a cliff hanger and the first episode to air the following season revealed that the previous season was all a dream? That is how I view the HBO TV series version of A Game of Thrones.

It felt empty without Victarion Greyjoy. The show had few sea battles, since they omitted the sea portion of the Battle of Blackwater--which was legendary in itself. Tyrion was a beast. The one sea battle that we did have had bootleg-Euron Greyjoy, and the bootleg Sandsnakes.
Oh, and bootleg-Asha/Yara, was involved as well, I suppose--but her only functions on the show were to screw with Theon, screw with random slave-prostitute women, and to look as slouchy and unappealing as possible. Where did my feisty, axe-wielding warrior goddess go?

RE: The cutting of the fantastical.
I get that ASoIaF is a more grounded fantasy setting more focusing on the politics and drama between houses and characters, but to cut the actual fantastical elements because "we didn't want to appeal to -that- sort of fan" is fucking ridiculous, I'm glad I got bored and dropped this a few episodes into season 2, to stick around for that sort of attitude from the show runners is just insulting.

This video was great! IMO leaving out Lady Stonehart was probably the biggest mistake the show made. But overall, it is all the small changes that snowball over the course of the series which end up having the biggest impact.

Best: Characters that were almost absent from the books but appeared quite often in the show - Olena Tyrell, Rob Stark.
Worst: All the abandoned plots - fAegon, Jeyne Poole, Jaqen H'ghar, Dorne.

Worst thing, just the complete inability to convey the mystical, magical world that mr Martin helps our brains paint so vividly. Best thing, knowing that isnt the end, that wasn't the story. Fun to look at, like dragons above the clouds. That was pretty. But it ain't over. The long night continues...
