Rory incorrectly gets the squad size wrong, giving them an extra 3 players, and then insanely says they can only pick 7 defenders?!? Southgate picked 10 defenders when he had a 23 man squad in 2018.

The discussion about playing Connor Gallagher as a lone #6 is complete insanity and shows that not one person at the table has ever watched him
Gareth Southgate has won as many knockout games from 2018-2022 as England managers won 1968-2016. The guys talking as if he has achieved nothing. As much as Maguire has been bad for club he has been good for nation and sometimes u select such players. For eg- Klose got selected for 2014 world cup scoring 8 goals for club that season.
You need to apply context though; which top sides has he beaten in the knockout rounds? Only Germany springs to mind. As Rory has previously mentioned he has won 4 in 24 against top 10 teams. He has been fortunate with certain results (scraping past Colombia on penalties, losing to Belgium in the World Cup to give us an easier draw). Look at the teams that have knocked us out as well: the Croatia and Italy teams who we were a goal up against (and arguably France) are much weaker than the likes of the Portugal and Brazil sides that Eriksson went out to as an example.
He hasn't beaten a team we weren't expected to beat yet.
@@JimmySands-pd7xt Firstly you can only defeat teams you face. He has an Euro final and World Cup semis in his name. So only Sir Alf Ramsey has been better than him. Before him the six knockouts win in the above mentioned period are Paraguay, Belgium, Cameroon, Ecuador, Denmark and Spain ( on penalties)
England have crashed out to Iceland in the time period.
Not to mention not being able to qualify for a few tournaments. Going out in the group stage multiple times like Euro 2000, 88, 92.
@@sauvikchakravorty7907 if you are basing success solely on how far he’s gone in tournaments then yes only Ramsey has been better, but I think that is a very limited view and like I said I think you need to apply context:
At the World Cup in 2018 he lost 3 games, 2 vs Belgium and 1 vs Croatia (the only two half-decent teams we faced). He beat Sweden, Tunisia and Panama in 90 mins (3 teams we were much better than and expected to beat).
In the round of 16, he had to rely on the lottery of penalties to beat a Colombia side we were expected to beat comfortably. Had he lost, the narrative behind Southgate would have been very different, but he won and received praise for winning our first shootout in a long time, despite the fact penalty shootouts have very little to do with managers and are down to the composure of the players. Any decent manager wouldn’t have let the game go down to the lottery of penalties.
Overall Southgate blew the best chance we will ever have of reaching a second World Cup final, given the draw and the fact we were 1-0 up in the semis.
At the 2020 euros he had one good result against Germany in the round of 16. All the other teams we were much stronger than and expected to beat. He once again blew a 1-0 lead, this time in the final to an average Italy team (they failed to qualify for the following World Cup). It was one of the most negative England performances I’ve ever seen, I don’t think we registered a shot on target in the second half.
Southgate blew the best chance we will ever have of winning a major international tournament, given the fact that it was essentially a home tournament, the way the draw opened up and that we were 1-0 up in the final.
In the 2022 World Cup he once again lost to the first decent team we came up against (despite this being the worst performance on paper of the tournaments under Southgate, I thought it was his most impressive as he went out to a much stronger side than previously and actually played much more positively).
In the nations league he has a 3rd place finish (once again losing a knockout match to the first half-decent team we were up against), a 3rd place group finish and a relegation, which included a 0-4 home defeat to Hungary which has to go down as one of the worst England defeats in history.
He is a very negative and safe manager whose first thought is how to stop the opposition rather than how to hurt the opponents with our quality attacking players. The worst example of this was at the euros when he played 5 defenders and 2 holding midfielders (only 3 attack-minded players).
He has no previous managerial pedigree and has alienated the fanbase with his constant political gestures, boring tactics/team selections and uninspiring interviews.

Curtis Jones is a much better player than Conor Gallagher. I really don't get why Jones is not being rated by English people, but I guess that's just the thing with Liverpool and being a scouser. Like, if a player like Trent doesn't even make the XI even though he's one of the best English players and probably the best ball player of all English players, that really says it all. Every other nation would take Trent in a heartbeat, and they'd even build their team around him, as he's young and has been world class since the age of 19.
Ask Spain, Brazil, Germany and Portugal about Trent, and they'd all take him in their starting lineup. It's really on Southgate not making the team work with all that talent. For me, if England's starting lineup looked like this, they'd dominate so much more:

Everyone wants Foden to start in midfield even though hes shown nothing for England. Why can't Trent play in the midfield over Foden? Far more creative and a threat.

For me the midfield 3 is Rice as the 6, Mainoo as the 8 and Bellingham in at 10. Bellingham is the best 10 in the world at the moment, Foden can play on the left and Saka on the right with kane through the middle. Pickford in goal, Back 4 of Shaw maguire stones walker. Maguire n stones have been so reliable for us. I would take Joe gomez as a utility defender, then Id take TAA, Konsa and Branthwaite, (Gomez can play Left back)
The reason England will never win anything of note is because they’re coached by a mediocre midtable level manager who repeatedly picks mediocre players like Maguire, Sterling, Phillips and Henderson, even when they’ve barely played or been shit.
The likes of Bowen, Branthwaite, Palmer, Mainoo, Colwil, Ben White and Watkins MUST be on the plane, but most of those won’t.

Butland has saved Rangers a lot of points this season, but against the likes of Motherwell, Livingston etc. He's not been great when they play higher quality like in Europe or Celtic, even Aberdeen.
I wouldn't take ward prowse personally mainoo has way more quality in the ball but I'd swap him for another attacker and take rashford because I'd use trent as a midfielder
If I was the manager I wouldn't take Gallagher either doesn't suit international football I would rather have a guy who has more quality on the ball like mainoo or barkley or Jones

Ideally you would want players to play most games in qualifying rather than throw them straight in at the tournament.
