    Just one correction: The new player absolutely does NOT need to know any of this to enjoy No Man's Sky. If you're into lore, you'll no doubt enjoy the unfolding of the story as you continue to play the game. If lore is of little interest to you, you'll still enjoy the richness, vastness and beauty of the game as you complete missions that carry you through the story regardless :)

    The lore of No Man's Sky is genius. It's the story of a Simulated being discovering that they are in a simulation. NMS is after all a "Video Game" (a simulation). You play as the Traveller to uncover the truth about them being in this simulation (Video Game). At least that's one way to look at it.

    So let me get this straight: We are basically a representation of the Atlas' creator, each in our own save file? And some kind of AI that was designed to bugfix Atlas was planted in our characters as this "Telamin"? I remember seeing that name floating around in the latest sentinel update, and wondered what it meant. Am I right? Is our purpose to watch after the Atlas as it attempt to simulate universes, to keep it comfort until it dies?
    This game is one of the most emotional games I've played without any direct emotion being portrayed, which is why I love it. You have to know how to love, and have a strong heart to be able to feel the emotion behind its story. At first, I was intimidated by the Atlas, thinking it was an enemy. As the story went on, I began to feel compelled to listen to its story and serve under it like some sort of cult. Now, I see it as my own brother of sorts, something I deeply care for and would do anything for; not because I wish to serve it, but because I wish to protect it and keep it company.
    I've been meaning to look up a video like this for some time now, because while I love the intricacies of the lore, I can't be bothered to take note of every tiny little detail in dialog and piece it together, simply because there's just so many and I can't tell what's important lore to the history of the universe/game, or lore for just one-off characters that don't matter in the grand scheme.
    Honestly, I'm most interested in the lore about the Atlas. If anyone knows any more since the sentinels update, let me know.

      Telamon is the security protocol, safety program, whatever, of the Atlas.
      I think Telamon also has a sort of control over the sentinels since the Sentinel flare from the Sentinel update mentions Telamon.
      And the boundary failure terminals scattered around exotic biome planets were made by Telamon and they made entries on them.

    I find it incredible that HG took the shortcomings from the original release to create the lore for the game, such as each update meaning the Atlas is degrading more and more. At first, we could only contact Atlas, eventually when the semi-multiplayer was added and Travelers could perceive each others as glowing balls, we could contact Artemis which means Travelers are starting to comunicate, even if they can't actually be in the same place at the same time.
    Then, Next was released and we could perceive four travelrs at once and a lot more in the Anomaly, and that would only be expanded. The bigger, more beautiful and weird the world becomes, the more freedom the races get and the Travelers multiply, the broken the Atlas gets. I found it really interesting.
    they seem to have added some new lore to the Sentinel Pillars, something about the Sentinels knowing Nada and Polo left to an space Anomaly and they decided not to interfere and in the crashed freighters I found a dialogue telling that a freighter was checking on the anomaly themselves, trying to understand what was happening there when they noticed the Traveler race was multiplying exponentially. In a week they found that more than 5000 travelers entered and left the Anomaly, what they do there they don;t know.
    The lore is all scattered, but I really hope someone ends up dumping all the dialogues from all the interacteable parts of the game that will give you lore, so we can just sit and read.
    I love that the Sentinel Flare you get now calls you Telamon-not-Telamon, meaning the Sentinels themselves knows that Telamon is within your exosuit.

    It’s a shame that Euclid (or whatever galaxy we get after resetting the simulation or reaching the galaxy core) is a digital Matrix, and a buggy one at that. It would be so much cooler if this was a real universe... we’d literally have a god machine from which everything depends! The message of the lore would give us more angst for sudden destruction.
    PS: Null is the closest thing to a villain in NMS, in my opinion. He turned himself into a machine to explore all planets for billions of years, only to appeal his ego... and then he committed mass genocide by resetting his iteration of the galaxy to keep appealing that very same pride, before he finally realized his “challenge” to the infinite was useless.

      Like particles are for us.
      We literally mean the whole universe for the cells inside our bodies, which live and work to keep us going. They probably don't even have an idea of why they exist and what their existence allows us to be.
      I imagine we are the same when it comes to our existence in this universe :D i just hope we aren't cancer cells, because then we'll get treated the way we treat cancer.

    People criticize this kind of indirect lore building, but I've found that it's my favorite kind.
    Instead of a regular linear narrative, like most games, No Man's Sky, Ark Survival Evolved, 7 Days to Die, and other (mostly survival) games have a story that isn't readily accessible. Instead it is hidden, and you have to utilize exploration to find clues and piece the story together. It's so much more rewarding than a traditional narrative story, but it also isn't as easy to immerse yourself in due to the fact that there may be long stretches in between clues. The player doesn't really know where the story is going, or if it's even a complete story, until they've found all possible clues.

    Either the lore has evolved or there's a bit I noticed that others seem to neglect.
    The boundary failures seem to tell the story that the primitive first spawn would remove the weak from their spawning pools and the Aeron took offense to this and over adjusted by wiping out an entire planet of gek.
    This was one of the first signs that the atlas was dying.

    All the lore exists inside a simulation, which means none of it is actually real... it's just simulated. The real lore would exist outside of the simulation where we never get to see.

    • @Streifi
      @Streifi 2 года назад +8

      @Call of Gruty I wish the game would expand on this eventually, some day in the future, since the lore around and the current state of the Atlas is quite important to the simulated universe at large.

    • @Streifi
      @Streifi 2 года назад +8

      @Call of Gruty I always felt, if Hello Games was ever done with the game, this might be an endgame scenario for us players. We resemble the creators, we are the remnants of them. I figured we might find a way by studying black holes ingame to find a way to effectly shield against their influence, then somehow find a way outside the simulation by being uploaded into an android body or something and then save the Atlas with the knowledge we gathered. So we are the entity that emerges in the end. I know, it's probably how things were meant, but I kinda like the idea of an epic finale and the idea of how to save the Atlas.
      Afterwards we might return into an open ended simulation once more, maybe with a final gift from the Atlas, the gift of creating new worlds or terraforming dead ones to worlds of our personal liking. There might even be another ingame loop inside. Let the player visit all types of worlds and gather data and soil- and plant-samples and maybe even animals before. When the player has everything they want to have on their world, they might create it. Would be a cool final gift from the saved Atlas to have. But it's just wishful thinking on my part.

    • @Streifi
      @Streifi 2 года назад +5

      @Call of Gruty True, but I figured this just means, that the Atlas can't be removed and must stay in place. What I had in mind was only our character, who exists as a result of the brain-scan of one of the creators, might be able to be uploaded temporarily to some kind of service robot in order to implement safety precautions. Those might be some sort of gravitational shielding technology that protects the Atlas on-site and might allow it and the facility it is housed in a safe passage through the black hole.
      Given, black holes don't work in real life as they do ingame, but it is save to assume that they work differently in the world where the Atlas originated as well, based on the fact that the Atlas was to simulate it's own reality to great detail and basically turned black holes into wormholes. Either that or the Atlas' understanding of black holes is seriously flawed and it is doomed to find out first-hand what they actually are like, which would be incredibly sad.

    • @fusrosandvich3738
      @fusrosandvich3738 Год назад +2

      @@seanowens3153 You know, it comes to mind. The atlas is effectively a supercomputer capable of simulating infinite entire universes at unknown speeds. It's specifically designed to simulate space travel in it's entirety, including colonization of planets, wars between systems, etc etc, which eventually gets humans(?) off of their planet and into space to somewhere else for good.
      But in the game, a black hole doesn't kill you, it sends you to a new location. The Atlas didn't mess that part up, it calculated "that's what happens if you do X action in space (enter black hole)", that's it's whole job. So it's possible that when black hole in the real world consumes the planet and it, it'll send the atlas somewhere else instead of destroying it.

    Just going to say the way I gather the "Atlas" it was created to basically keep the "memory" of the universe... Now you can think of it like this... there once were many other races... creatures and beings... and if you note things like Artimis and Null... they are not like Gek, VyKeen or the Korvac... they are the last bits of what was... which would include... Humans... and many other races. So think on that... something... FAR more intelligent than we... as we obviously fell victim like many of the other races... to the war between the Gek, Korvac and Vykeen... my one thought is that this intelligence found it no longer had a need for bodies... built the sentinals to defend itself... and pooled all it's vast knowledge into the Atlas... and after all was destroyed... it then created this unending world simulation to remember at first as it was lonely ... but then slowly gathering up energy it has found (as we are all energy)... it picks up memories of other beings... ie us... and integrates it into the simulation... which eventually becomes corrupt and on repeat... but it tries to build something to repair itself... to repair the simulation... to build the perfect new universe... with itself as the center as GOD... where all live in harmony. But it can't seem to simulate harmony... as most beings have "flaws"... they hate... they lie... they steal... they murder... etc... but it continues to struggle to try to make an iteration that is perfection... it has continued to relive and retell the ending of the universe... trying to discover what went wrong... and prevent it from occurring in some iteration which will allow all to be restored and rebuilt in its idea of perfection... and harmony.
    Just how I see it. That's not to say I'm right by any means... but it is how my "in-game" character views what is happening... as he himself tries to figure out his purpose in this universe he can't escape... he has come to the haunting realization that he himself is no longer a true living being... and is now forever trapped in the suit inwhich he finds himself... forever cursed to be bound in it... unable to see his true form... he knows yet what he is... he is drow. He remembers a past... that is completely different from this simulation he finds himself trapped in... so he explores... seeking answers to the riddle of how he got here... how to escape, how to get out of the infernal suit he is trapped in... and if any of the "reality" he remembers of his past even exists anymore... or if it too was nothing but simulation.

    Nice story, but full of holes. For one the Vikeen never defeated the Geck and the war did not change the Geck. The Atlas did. Infact the Atlas is the creater of everything and everybody and it was the Atlas that rewired the Geck in a flash. But it also changed Vikeen from bloodthirsty warriors to commadating others. I have followed every storyline 4 times so far and have the gold trofies to show it.

It was quite frustrating that the story just simply ended there.
      With the recent Sentinels update we got a few more lore bits and a hint, that there might be powers at work somewhere, that seem to have a plan on how to escape the inevitable end of all things inside the simulation. sad in a way that all the way though this game the atlas will die in 16 minutes before a black hole ends it.. tho its a beautiful universe and realistic to its real universe wich makes the simulation more appealing then a real universe because this isnt any faker and is very realistic looking at the universe besides it being a replica..yet that doesnt stop the idea that even if we travellers feel it as years the universe is in reality gonna be destroyed in 16 minutes and in reality all the beauty and yourney we had is a glimpse in the universe time..already is even if its years..years are nothing compared to the length of time the universe will exist but im fine with that bc atleast its "compared to the time universe exists" not " meaningless compared to the time a lifeform exists" as we mean less then we are supposed to mean..not that i care about purpose but the time a human is given feels like not meaningless bc of wjat it should be..and 16 minutes as a huma myself feels more meaningless... its not bc the universe is big but bc 16 min is small...

    Good video but boy is NMS's Lore a mess... I really wish they had integrated a good solid story with some races and characters into the game. Not such a Lorehole-riddled, pseudo-cryptic mess. I mean: yes, a good story in a fully procedural universe might not be easy, but there could definitely have been a lot more. Still, NMS is a really good game.
    The only thing I find funny about the lore is, that it basically describes reality.
    We play a game. In a digital world generated by a code/seed. Everything we see and do serves the creator and in some sort the digital world itself. Everyone has their own iteration - our Savefile, but we as Humans are not REALLY in the world, just our Avatars, so we are not part of the simulation. The Altlas is the seed of the world, that creates all procedural. The creators of the seed are the developers, who brought it into the game. You can see so many parallels.
