My family went to Ely every year between 1968-1986, and always went to Lodge of the Whispering Pines on Big Lake. I have only beautiful memories of Ely, MN.
Aussie from Perth Western Australia here - I used to do business in Hibbing every year before covid. First thing Saturday morning was a trip up to Ely for a visit to Log Cabin Coffee (best coffee in US).... Winter Ice Sculptures are amazing also. A hidden away little gem.
I used to livee in Ely as a college student back in the late 80s early 90s. That restaurant used to be called The Chocolate Moose and was okay. I worked for the international wolf center as an intern when it was still located at the college. it is so much larger than when I wass there. I guess I would say "more modern." I lived on White iron Lake for about four years. The people of Ely are the best one could associate with. Great vibes all around.
I have really bad news. The steakhouse closed last fall. If you want a steak, you might have to try Insula, Frisky Otter (new!), or venture outside Ely.
hi there...Ely native here...thanks for the review..update...hardware store is now kj's on the corner of sheridan and 3rd...ben franklin is in the same spot..front porch is no longer..sheridan st deli now...peace and good paddling to all
this video made me smile.Stayed in Ely at the same hotel...very clean, friendly and affordable. Watching this video makes me want to go back .....day paddle...hike and eat. Thanks !! 2024
went to ely in 2012 and was blown away by all of the pristine beauty and diverse amount of wildlife! I stayed in a cabin on burntside lake and ended up in the "ely angler" newspaper for catching a 28" northern pike
The hardware store is now at the old Zups store. It opened at the new location about a month ago. Front Porch is closed now and we hope it opens again this spring
How about that! Two big changes! The Zups was across the street from the Hotel I stayed at! It would be a real bummer if Front Porch didn’t re-open. Thanks for watching and sharing the update 👍🏻

My family loved going up there on vacation when we could afford it and when my dad was still here he loved fishing and so do I. We would always stay at Latourells resort just out of town. Next time you go make sure to check out Rockwood restaurant if it’s still there, they have the Minnesota famous juicy Lucy burger and walleye Rangoon, and the boat house I believe still serves duck wings as an appetizer with sweet chili sauce, but again we haven’t gone since 2017, love the video keep it up

If you ever visit Ely again, the North American Bear Center is well worth a visit. Also Northern Grounds, a coffee house with baked goods. I always go there when I'm in Ely.
I go there a lot, and bought a house in town. There are over 250 miles of ATV trails. I was there last in August, and I rode about 60 miles a day. You could just Google Ely ATV trails. I'll be back again this month.
I am considering moving to Ely because it is close to the Canadian border. I love Canada and saw they had some affordable homes in Ely. They have poutine and that's how you know its close to Canada
And why did you pick one restaurant for every meal? Because what the heck is up with restaurants in Ely? They're never open!! We about starved visiting Ely.
Ely is mostly a tourist town. Main Street is 1.5 miles long. There are at least a dozen canoe outfitters on main street Repeat customers are their mainstay. They love living near wilderness and want to share their love of the outdoors. If interested in doing a trip. I can recommend some great places in Ely or at either end of the bwca. They can outfit your entire trip including food and gear. Just bring two kinds of footage and a some warm clothes and a good rain jacket. Morning and evenings are the best times to enjoy nature in the BWCA. Loons start calling 30 minutes after sunset. BEAUTIFUL... Check out Mark's Potaczek videos here
