  • It's the oldest chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the world, and it's not in the United Sates of America. Nestled in the Worcestershire countryside is Gadfield Elm Chapel. Given to the church by the United Brethren in the 1840s, it laid abandoned after mass migration by members of the Church to the United Saints. Join me as I explore how it came to be restored.

    Nemo, I'm in the US and an ex-Mormon. I think the work you're doing is great and to this day, I remain subscribed. I just wish I could do more to support your channel. But after watching these examples of how the church financially abandons the members and uses the members to undertake the financial burdens they can well afford, I keep asking myself "why?". I don't understand the level of greed the church leaders display.

    • @wmdubinhad

      The Church did not abandon the members in purchasing the land or restoring Gadfield Elm Chapel. Nemo is far from truthful about this. If the Church had taken over this site, it would have diminished the members' efforts and personal sacrifices. This story is about personal sacrifice and people being anxiously engaged in a good cause.
      The only abandonment here is Nemo not telling the real stories. He's more focused on finding the one who didn’t join the Church rather than highlighting the many amazing stories, both then and now.

    Ah this place has a special place in my heart. I effectively grew up with it. Saw it be rebuilt from.the ground up My family helped Wayne his parents etc maintain the garden when it had one. Spent my youth camping there and activities were always planned there. Attended the dedication and got to see the prophet. It was always a special place to the members who attended. Whike its a shame the church left the members to do all the leg work, the members definitely got the benefit of the place to enjoy it. As ah Exmo its the one place i would want to go to again in the future.

    While I'm not a member, I feel like that is the proper way to do it. Members not leaders get to decide how the donations should be spent. Growing up in Utah, I am really disappointed seeing what is supposed to be a religion, is more like a conglomerate of businesses and yet they still demand their faithful to pony up %10.

    I was a missionary in the England Central Mission in 1972. My Mission President Reed L Reeve wanted to baptize his daughter in John Benbow’s farm pond. After a lengthy process to get permission. Land owner not a member. We had to find the pond! Trees and brush completely surrounded the pond. The water was completely covered with brush, branches and dead fall. We removed and cleared a small spot to stand in. This was no small task as the pond had not been seen for many many years. Then President Reeve baptized his daughter. The water was so murky the baptismal clothes were brown. She would be 60 yrs old today. Never thought I’d see a tourist spot there.

That lady next to her may be Sister Price, the wife of the England Bristol Mission president. I don't recall the purchase of the farm and I'm wondering if the purchase coincided with the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Church in Great Britain. And the postulating that the members were hard done by the church is ludicrous - if nemo you had actually done your research, you could have talked to wayne who lives close and you would have known then that they feel amazingly blessed for the massive efforts they put in to it. These are the type of people that are not thinking of temporary treasures that will rust and fade.

    Amazing scenery and what a sacrifice to those involved
    I guess would ask 2 questions to be thorough:
    1. How much money did the church have in 1994 when this building was purchased? (~7 billion?) 3 years prior to Ensign Peak Advisors was formed. Unsure if that 192 million purchase of the Kirtland temple and other properties/items could be used as a comparison to this purchase in 1994. Maybe identify purchases by the church in mid 90's?
    2. 2001 was when the first of 13 shell companies formed to obfuscate church holdings. Unsure how long after did they end up with 13. Can we really say that in the nineties "they had no reason to believe that the church had billions of dollars they could have spent to fund this project because the church employed systematic efforts to hide the size and nature of their wealth from the public and church members"? Maybe the church employed different types of "systematic efforts" before 2001 but that would be a different link than your expose on the SEC violations and shell companies.

    … concerning the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb.
    Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the earth, a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of desolation, of weeping, of mourning, and of lamentation; and as a whirlwind it shall come upon all the face of the earth, saith the Lord.
    And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth, saith the Lord;
    First among those among you, saith the Lord, who have professed to know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house, saith the Lord. (D&C 112:24-26)
    Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
    Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
    Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
    …that he might be revealed in his time.
    …until he be taken out of the way. (2 Thessalonians 2:1, 3-4, 6, 7)
    While that man, who was called of God and appointed, that putteth forth his hand to steady the ark of God, shall fall by the shaft of death, like as a tree that is smitten by the vivid shaft of lightning. (D&C 85:8)
    For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5:3)

    We are so blessed by the sacrifice these members made, and it has greatly enriched my family’s life as we spend time in this beautiful building and surrounding areas!
    Members over the world make similar sacrifices, like those in Britain. Many Church history sites, such as Kirtland, Nauvoo, and Missouri, started with members who later donated assets to the Church.
    Sometimes, when the Church tries to buy properties, locals refuse to sell. A great example is Adam-ondi-Ahman, where the community wouldn’t sell a rock, so a few members bought the land piece by piece and then deeded the land to the Church. Now, the Church owns all the land as far as you can see from Adam-ondi-Ahman. They rent out the farmland to local farmers and it is so beautiful! These new farmers love the partnership they have with the church.
    Nemo always seems to focus on the negative instead of appreciating a beautiful story like this one.
