I'm not sure what kind of fan to classify myself as. I think MLP is cute and fun, though has potential to be more sophisticated than they're making it; I'm not as awed by the show as a lot of other people are. That said, I think the brony fandom has the most talented and creative people of most fandoms, especially in music. This is a fine example of that.
I know this comment is a year old but I can explain why MLP can't really go farther with its themes. It's mostly Hasbro meddling. The MLP movie was supposed to be heavily lore filled and be more of a grand and epic movie. There were email leaks that showed what the story was going to be, but they changed to a different studio and changed to a really "safe" story line for the movie instead. A lot of dumb things in the show are mandates by Hasbro to advertise toys (the crystal castle, the trains, and others). So the show staff tries their best to keep within the confines of Hasbro's mandates and within a Y rating. I think they've done a good job of that.

Hasbro needs to sell their stuff, if they won't, we won't have the show around for much longer. I bet nobody wants that. And they ain't even being copyright assholes like so many other companies these days. They won't even screw you up for using their stuff for non-commecial purposes.
Incredible. Reminds me of the earlier Brony music when saw an explosion of Pony electronic, trance, house, club and dubstep being made but you could tell it was still Pony. This is just amazing. Going to be a top ten favorite of the year for sure.
