How come 120 (or even 119) ? He said first and last checkpoint will always be either former Gfred's (or Derfg's, I guess), and this already eliminate large combinations. Considering first and last are fixed, and checkpoints extracted cannot be extracted again, there are left 3! * 2 combination left. 12 total routes to easily study in advance for optimization.
@@andreaspooky6183 The start and finish are not included in the gfred acronym. There’s 5 total checkpoints between the start and end which can be randomized: lighthouse, quarry, airport, chiliad, observatory. So 5! or 120 combinations but only 119 are new given that the regular route is one already.
Ooh I like this! It'll definitely shake things up a bit :) Not to take away from anyone's skill or achievements, but as a viewer, it does get a little repetitive seeing the same names at the top nearly every GFRED. I reckon this will shake things up just enough to give other players a bit more of a chance.
Oh, *Broughy*. I figured, 30 minutes would mean the race would be a lot more scrambled. Nah, you had to botch the hail mary and the return is even worse...TWICE.
Probably many of the future Gfreds will be over 30 minutes to win if the now previous second small stairway dock checkpoint is no longer conveniently close to the starting island.
Great variation, I enjoyed it. I was super confused when you turned right so early on in the run and then when you got the 9F and started climbing Chilliad, my brain melted, haha, good stuff, glad you’re keeping it fresh
Route for race 1 was picked manually to show off some of the possible routes that even derfg didn't show, like having to navigate through the downtown city, through vinewood from the observatory, and decending the other side of chilliad (even though broughy picked the traditional way down.) The lighthouse was kept the same for some easing in as the scrambled freds can be up to 50% longer than a gfred with that checkpoint randomised, better to go easy on race 1. Routes will be random from now on and are being set without the knowledge of the other staff so benny, dinmite, lok can all go into it as blind as everyone else.
Love this idea Brough, I can only imagine how much you needed a little breath of fresh air. What you said at 9:40 brought back a memory of an idea I had many many years ago, by creating a Gfred “alphabet.” In theory there would be 26 pre-determined checkpoint locations, each with a letter of the alphabet assigned to them, and then the race would be named using the letters of whatever checkpoints were used.
When I saw how much fun you were having with the Cannonball I had a feeling it was only a matter of time! I like this change, specifically for the channel, not that I won't still enjoy watching classic Gfreds from time to time.
This is so much fun. I randomly discovered Gfred during the first UK lockdown thanks to the ineffable YT algorithm (I've never even played GTA lol) and binge watching it was one of the things that helped me through that time. Sinve then the weekly upload has been part of my decopmression ritual and to see such a fun evolution has me very excited. Thanks Brough and everyone involved :)
THIS. This is amazing; idc about winning or losing so much but finding out new fast routes between all of these checkpoints, 120 different variations like you mentioned, is gonna be so entertaining.
OMG! Your ability to blow it at the end is so undeniably entertaining. Puh-lease don't go getting TOO good at this in your practice. Stellar concept btw. Top notch. 😊
I like the randomness in this new format. I wish vanilla GTA Online PC had proper public races like this, without mod using 8-year-olds destroying the whole experience... But I know, that's like wishing there was no evil in the world.
Very happy to hear that you will get some practice in! You are a really good driver but the parts that were slowing you down the most (full send, hail merry, swimming line) are just some thing that are down to pure practice. I think it will be worth it in the end, as a viewer it kind of sucked to watch you do a really good race and then fail the jump, always thinking to myself "damn it broughy, you gotta get the practice in!" XD
DEFINITELY a very nice refresh!! GFRED was still always fun to watch, but we could tell it was wearing on you haha! Awesome idea! Yes, 'm behind and catching up
Loving the scramFRED so far, it's so interesting seeing all the different routes everyone takes to get to a certain checkpoint. Can't wait to see more, and how close the racing will get.💯🔥🔥
Happy to see Gfred back and I like the changes. Can't wait to see what memorable moments and chokes these changes bring and boy did this one give us some entertaining chokes 😂😂
I think GFRED should stay the same. It's classic, well loved, and iconic. Coca Cola is classic, well loved, and iconic as well. They are always trying new variations, flavors, looks, but in the end, Coke is the best seller for the company and the overall favorite. There's a reason for that. You really just don't mess with a tried and true formula.
To use your own analogy - those new variations and flavours obviously do well enough that they keep creating them and trying new things. As long as the original coke is still there (like the original Gfred will be) there's no reason not to keep things fresh as well.
You know what I actually like it. I think it offers so much more variation, however there's still the element of familiarity because we all know the checkpoints themselves. Plus the start and finish are the same.
Debatable. I think it could be longer if it was 1)Chiliad, 2)Lighthouse, 3)Observatory, 4)Quarry, 5)Airport, & finish Island. I think they would lose more time & it would be far more chaotic having to use the 1 & only path both up & down East of Chiliad. They would be pretty much forced to crossover with most of the other players. With your proposed "longest Gfred", the best players would go from Quarry, under the Alamo Sea & then up Chiliad like they normally have in the past & do so quicker than those going both up & down the path East of Chiliad.
There will only be 5x6=30 segments of possible routes from checkpoint to checkpoint, so it's definitely possible to practice all the possible route in advance. Also, derfG will have two meaning if you note the scrambled order of checkpoints by the letters.
Yep! And many of the new routes are just variations on each other. In reality this means the players that take this too seriously will figure out how to do the new routes quickly to have an advantage over everyone else.
@@crusty_magog What defines someone taking it "too seriously?" People get on these servers and hotlap other tracks. Broughy himself hotlaps tracks constantly. This is just another track that people practice, they take it just as seriously as other races..
My god broughy.. you have got to practice your hail marys lol.... you keep taking the angle too shallow.. so you would benefit from watching RBS channel for like 15 minutes and just see where he angles the car towards the launch... you have to go a little further and dont turn in so soon.. youll see what i mean if you ever watch it .. fun stuff absolutely love the variation!!!!
Gfred Scramble seems like the obvious name. Once you started going the wrong way and I looked at the map, I'm like "what is this, a Gfred Scramble?", and then you said it. I'm in, it'll definitely keep things interesting!
Although there are 120 variations in reality it’s more like 25 because there are only 5 different possible routes from one checkpoint to the next and the checkpoints are independent for the most part. People will soon figure out the fastest way to do the 20 new lines.
Kinda seems like someone could just curate a longer cannonball every couple weeks and this would be the same result, or maybe even better with a few GFRED-ish checkpoints spread across the map at new locations. Then if the route seems really good maybe you could do that a few times to see how that meta develops and then move onto something new after a couple tries at that.
That is actually crazy, I also came up this idea a few months ago and just released a few races like two weeks ago and I was waiting to comment to you about it in your next Gfred video (this video) but lucky I watched a bit of the video first otherwise I would have looked like an idiot.

Total race possibilities are 120, but they'll all be built from some 6 of the 30 possible point-to-point sections. 30 sections is still a ton more than the original 6 Gfred sections, but it's conceivable to build up experience or even to train recreationally for the scrambles. Give it a few years and some of the old and new competitive-spirited players will probably train up for the scramble to a degree as well. They only have to learn 18 new checkpoint routes, since Gfred and derfG cover 12 of the 30 sections already. I think the best part is the fun and anticipation of not knowing what order the checkpoints will be in, though, so it's totally cool.
