A message from the boss: The Modern Commandos

- Опубликовано: 10 июн 2024
- The head of the Royal Marines has emphasised the importance of his commandos in the modern era of warfare as the Corps celebrates its 360th anniversary year.
Commandant General, General Gwyn Jenkins and the most senior Royal Marines Warrant Officer, Regimental Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Nick Ollive, have outlined what it means to be a commando in the modern era in a video address to the Corps.
The Commando Force - with Royal Marines at its heart - continue their bold modernisation into a force that embraces technology but also returns to their roots as raiders from the sea.
At its core, each commando brings with them unrivalled training and a mindset that means they can adapt and overcome when others may founder.

Excellent. Watch and take note, Army, that’s how to get people interested, not some battlefield prayer meeting.
@@Lrow095 no, he means take note Army. the commandos come under the Navy and did this promo, don't need to take note from themselves
@@patdennison4508- this video shows you what The Corps gives now and what it means to wear our beret.
If you've forgotten the Commando Ethos I'd be happy to remind you by escorting you to CTCRM to witness an AACC getting thrashed on the bottom field.
Maybe watching guys give their all to try and achieve something will remind you of the positive young thruster you once were.
@@JammyDodger45 I’m still a thruster mucker… just not young!!! UWC 😂

@DrGarry4145 incorrect, I'm afraid. There are many Commandos in the Army, the first Commandos in WW2 were in fact Army units.
As the wife of a Royal for over 30 years now I couldn’t be more proud! This is exactly how the RM should be publicised, they are the elite!
How is Jim?
Jim says he’s splendid! He rejoined a few years ago as full time reservist, back on 845! He asks how you’re doing and what you’re up to?
Hmm was Jim ever a Signaller on HQ & Sigs Sqn?
That name rings a bell from my time on BPT 20 odd years ago.

@@pc1629 You forgot the "R"

From a former Royal Anglian infantry soldier I can say without hesitation that the commando training, ethos and way of life IS how all members of the British Armed Forces should be trained and treated.
I’ve also witnessed at first hand the commando way of life having been part of coaching a young lad in my retirement to become now a highly motivated officer who said to me last month I don’t want any other job in my life this is the best thing I’ve ever done Thank you for your support.
I’ve also met the chap in charge and agree he is the ultimate leader.
Keep going forward Royals.
I'm a former Bootneck and about 20yrs ago when I was the Training Standards SNCO on Commando Training Wing we investigated the possibility of having an Infantry Troop (Platoon) within the Brigade, rather like the Parachute Regiment has Guards Para Platoon.
A few of the sharper Army Colonels out there saw it as a potential way of keeping their own capbadge in the limelight and away from the crazy amalgamations that were going on back then and leapt at the chance to investigate it.
One of the most keen and proactive were your boys. Your CO and RSM came to CTCRM for a visit and were very enthusiastic. In truth we were very happy about this as we'd targeted the County Regiments after wrorking with them many times and we appreciated that they were all far keener on getting down and dirty than some of the other 'more fashionable' outfits.
Unfortunately Operational tempo got in the way and when we were given The Rifles as part of our ORBAT for Herrick their woeful performance put us right off the idea.
I always thought it was a pity as we'd had some brilliant Army Infantry lads go through the All Arms Commando Course over the years (Brian Woods MC for example) and I believed it would have been an absolute success but alas the idea was never followed through.
A far better "Recruiting Video" compared to others out there.
Its not like the new woke recruiting videos work anyway, appealing to people that hate their own country was obviously a bad idea.

Good dits RSM & The Boss, Get it shown in the houses of Parliament. DO NOT bow down to this "Diversity & Inclusivity" stuff that's being thrown around everywhere. Maintain the standards we are rightly proud of...PMPT
You’ve missed the point. D&I isn’t about woke or PC politics. D&I is building the team they’re talking about so when you go over the line you don’t get fratricide, homicide and suicide because there’s bullying and harassment going on in your organisation. That’s why Russian soldiers run their colonels over in tanks and shoot their own men. They reject D&I and reap the consequences. We embrace it and build teams that win. It’s the difference between coming back from ops and getting TRIMmed or coming back from ops and being left with your thoughts and a bottle, waiting to end your own life because you weren’t supported. That’s D&I in the service. Not “I identify as a jellyfish today”.
You can still maintain the standards and be inclusive. 😂

As for the narrative, spot on, commandos - stay true to the beret and forefathers to deliver what most can’t on behalf of our nation and allies.
This should be the Blue Print for all current Military TV recruitment ads. As this video gets to the core of what the Armed forces are all about, War Fighting, not an extension of the Emergency Services or the Foreign Aid Budget. The MOD, RAF and the British Army need to take note on this Quickly!

Commandos were created in 1940 not '42'. The Army led the way here and trained the Royal Marines to be Commando's in 1942. The first RM Cdo was trained at Achnacarry in February 1942 and was initially designated Alpha Commando, later to be called 40 Commando. Thus the RM Cdo was born and are rightly some of the best soldiers on the planet as they continue to grow and adapt.

Commandos Rule
An excellent video and I’m sure will inspire those few who do embody the commando spirit. Of course, there is a natural turnover of personnel and you need to replace those. As in any walk of life. What is the turnover rate of the commandos? How does it compare to, say, 10 years ago or 20 years? How does it compare to other Services and, for example, to the Paras? It costs a huge amount of money and time to train a commando; retention is a far better method of lowering cost but does the Corps believe it is doing all that it can to retain? And what are the obstacles (inside and outside the Corps) to increasing that retention rate?
My family started serving in the Corps in 1885; great grandfather served in China; grandfather on WW1; father on DDay in WWII; and now a son serving in the Corps. I do what I can as a member of the RMA and supporting the Charity. So, the family has every reason to be proud of the Corps and do what we can to make it better

the marines both in UK and the US are definitely better in producing quality recruitment videos that captures the essence of the branch's purpose better than their other land warfare counterparts.
Hoofing!
No mention of the run ashore's and all the real fun stuff. All the fighting , running about and military style glamping malarkey was just so we got some time off. It all seems so serious and they didn't "allude to" our heritage going back to 1664, Falklands, Suez or Gibraltar. That's our foundations which will never fail unlike all the new technology, then its back to basics Royal
Is Royal Marines designated as “Special Operations” a recent thing ? As a non Brit, I thought that UK SOF was SBS, SAS and the Recce Regiment (+ an artillery unit forxwhich I forgot the nane)
RM Commando can be considered Tier 2 SF and typically support Tier 1 (SBS) but work independently. There is a new strategy "Future Commando Force (FCF) which will leave conventional war fighting and go back to their roots of small team raiding and specialised tasks using high level equipment.
They aren't called commandos for nothing
If RM is special operations does that make the SBS really, really, really special operations then?
No. Just super special operations.
@@nohandle747 It's a strong video. But if the 'boss' doesn't no what they are well........
Very proud to have served in the army and choosing the commandos as my home. Ending up specialising within my commando unit adding para/coxwain and other specialties to my role. Shame when we moved out of RM Poole where sharing a base with the SBS was a massive benefit

The entry requirements must have changed since my day - I saw a young woman of five foot with the Commando Dagger emblem on her sleeve. I’m not being sexiest just curious how she could have passed selection? Also strange the video showed parachute jumps as not even the Paras are trained to jump anymore as role switched to light infantry deployed by ship though they retain the name hence they have moved to Kent for roll on roll off ferries which are contracted to provide transport in times of conflict/war.

@@MrYodaone902 Yes!
The UK military has very high standards for what it considers special forces, but for comparison the SAS are a tier 1 special operations unit like Delta and Seal Team 6 in the US, and the Royal Marines Commandos are comparable to tier 2 special operations units such as the 75th ranger regiment, Navy Seals (except team 6), Marsoc, Force Recon…

Real special operators have beards.
Funny that because a lot of the tier 1 gang I came across in Afghanistan didn't.
The first special operators were the British commandos in WW2 and they didn’t have beards
CABBBBAGEEEE
Reality:
The commandos are ever shrinking along with the rest of the british militarie's budget. A lot of jobs they used to have are now taken up by newer units like The Rangers, Pathfinders, SRR etc.
They're likely gonna go the way of the US Marines with their roles being mostly things like fleet security, VBSS, counter piracy and things of the nature.
Also a lot of "Special Operations" goes straight down the bin against anything even resembling a near peer. Convetional is King if you've been paying attention to Ukraine.
Wow, you don't know what you're talking about at all do you. Pathfinders are 16aab forward recce force, they have nothing to do with the RM and take no work off them. The old RM bpt now called srs are the RM version and perform that role/ an enhanced role that they have done for real. Srr are part of UKSF and do a different surveillance role entirely, again nothing to do with the RM or what they offer. Rangers are a force mentoring unit, nothing else and 42/ elements of 40 cdo do the maritime/ littoral version of what they do anyway. Roles haven't been replaced, they've taken more roles on/ more back from what would have been uksf from 2011 to now. Also, I think you'll find sof in Ukraine are getting some really good results. Alsoooo the vbss stuff, particularly at the L3+ stage that fct do is categorised by NATO as maritime special operations...
FR, SR, ISTAR, Force Mentoring and all these things were in fact jobs that used to be done by RM which are now instead done by organic units (internal to 16AAB or UKSF as you pointed out) or completely taken off the table in favor to a more specialized regiment (Rangers). This is probably due to an overall lack of personnel but it could also be a plain restructuring. If a unit outside out AAB or UKSF requires those services the default isn't the RM anymore but it's those mentioned above.
I'm not saying they're not SOF lmao, i'm saying their use and effectiveness is extremely limited in a near peer conflict. If you had paid a bit more attention you'd notice that Ukraine SOF have either been used as conventional troops or used to reinforce convetional troops.
It's funny because you literally said nothing that disagrees with what i said.
All of the surveillance & recconisance jobs you mentioned there are all done by organic units on behalf of their own brigades. Pathfinder aren't used as an asset that covers the whole UK military. Pathfinder aren't trained to do what RM MLS do are they ? Again, the likes of srrs ops aren't the same. These units have all existed for a long time now, all were deployed during Iraq & Afghan and I know for a fact the cdo elements have been deployed recently. Every single bit of istar for the UK is not done by 16aab. Force mentoring is done by ranger AND RM, like I said. The whole maritime interdiction, littoral operations partner force training is done by the RM NOT ranger.
I don't ever remember a time when ALL of those taskings were done by RM alone and actually, I disagreed with a lot of what you said, you just haven't understood it.
