Yellow eye mullet bait, burly, rig, tips.Fishing Parsons beach South Australia.

  • Hi all, in this video I show how to rig up for yellow eye mullet also what baits to use and tackle plus best ways to use burley for them for beach fishing, all these techniques also work for a wide range of our smaller fish in South Australia and probably for some interstate, we also head down onto the beach for a fish. I don't catch any large legal size mullet but the fishing rig and technique is shown to to be quite effective and catch quite a few fish what were available at the time, I did use my salmon fishing rod at the end and managed a few small salmon and finished up with a nice bag of fish and a cracking sunset. Thank you all for watching and if anything changes in regards to using mince meat for bait I will let you guys know.

    Thank you David for another great video.
    I just love your passion in helping to make not so good fishermen into better fishermen who can catch a feed of fish.
    Bring on the garfish video 📹.
    I am so looking forward to the last two weeks of January.
    I will be on the Yorke Peninsula hopefully catching Tommies and gar 🐟 on maggots bred by you. I use a version of your berley mix and it works a treat.
    How good is that sunset 🌇 at Parson's ,it was simply stunning.
    Thanks again for making me a better fisherman. You have given me inspiration.

      Hi Tony, thank you and it was fun catching them also very tasty, summer months all depending where you are planning to fish, there can be some good fishing over hear on the south coast, the list of possibilities is large, Mulloway, Sharks around goolwa and Victor Harbour also waitpinga and Parsons, Tommie roughs also known as Australian herring, Garfish, Squid, King George whiting, Flathead, also some good rock fishing around Victor Harbour, you can still catch a few salmon trout even occasional salmon from Parsons beach and Waitpinga, also mullet can be found there too. use burly wherever you end up, also check the local fishing reports and ask local fishing shops for advise. ALL the best with you fishing when you get out Tony.

    Great tutorial Dave! You’ve managed to tug my memory strings with my grandfather buying me my first mullet rod, which still till this day the thinnest, lightest 7ft rod in 1972, getting up at Sparrows fart, and straight down to the Onkaparinga mouth armed with his mullet mix made the night before, consisting of minced meat, curry and semolina made into little balls. We used the same paternoster rig as yours but always used little off cut of thin red electrical wire plastic coating running between hook and loop, for a little extra bling for the bait. Was never convinced it was actually beneficial, but always used it in respect for Paddy Reilly. Keep it up, and keep it in👍🏼

      Hi Kevin, thank you. Yes this also brings back memories for me, all the seasoned fishos in the shallows Port Noarlunga jetty early seventies (the beginning of my fishing life) shoulder to shoulder fishing the south side near the small reef all using curried mince and pulling in the mullet you could smell the curry powder also some had the keens curry there to add more, so fun back then so many fish, I was a nipper in the life savers there.I have not heard of Paddy Reilly but he must have been a respected fisherman. Nice to here from you again Kevin all the best...

    Another brilliant video David. In regards to mince meet; I believe it's not liked by PIRSA because of it's potential to pollute the water. For the same reason, I have heard that it might be illegal to use chicken. I don't imagine it has a lot to do with sharks (I've never heard of anyone catching a bronzie on mince lol). Personally, I always prefer to use natural baits, where ever I fish. It's just a personal preference, I wouldn't criticize anyone for using mince.

    • @davidsheldonfishing9726
      @davidsheldonfishing9726  Год назад +1

      Thank you Jeremy, yes thats what I heard originally in regards to using chicken and chops in crab nets, people were throwing everything into the water when finished and the bones were every where creating pollution and a mess around our jetties then I was hearing we can't use meat or meat offal for burley because of sharks, like yourself I for one would never use that stuff for shark burley there are much better natural things to use but occasionally I do use a bit of mullet mince. Thank you for your comment Jeremy happy fishing mate.

    Hello David, Back about 40 years ago, when we were not as restricted as we are today, I spent some time in the plant room of the Elizabeth town center. I saw an air rifle standing alongside the door so I asked the manager why it was there. He said that he would shoot some feral pigeons and use them for bait for mullet. He said that pigeon meat did not loose its colour in the water and was better than other red meat.

    • @davidsheldonfishing9726

    Hi Dave. What a great video. Would be very informative for a lot of fishos. Gee all those fish in the surf there would be great mulloway bait. A mullet rod, a salmon rod and a mulloway rod too :-)
    So, for the record, red mince meat was always ok to use as 'bait' in SA. The law is poorly written, opaque and nebulous. It lacks granularity in its specifics and is way open to interpretation relating to mince use. The poor darlings at Pirsa would be wallowing in this law. Therefore, in the spirit of the law, if fishing for tommies, mullet, gar etc, then only small hooks would be used and mince in tiny amounts. And it would be combined with other condiments, so no issue. If using red mince for berley, then big chunks would be used, so this would contravene the law, as it would be seen as 'chumming', could attract sharks and deemed illegal. Just common sense i think. Cheers mate.

      G'day Trevor, nice to get good feed back from a fisherman like yourself, the mulloway will start next year when silly season is over, I would love to catch one on video they are a special fish, so now is the time to get focused and try to make that reality, I have got a few other species to try and catch too so much fun dreaming about and trying when can. Yes the mullet mince is now sorted to good a bait to not to be allowed to use, very happy with the outcome. Thank you again for commenting Trevor.

    Thanks david for another awesome video. I used your burley mix recipe and caught around 12 mackerel in portsea pier 2 weeks ago. Just wondering how can I buy one of those burley springs that you always use. I haven’t seen anything here at the tackle shops in melbourne. Thanks again

      Hi Eric, thank you for saying. nice to hear the burley mix has been doing its job fish do love it. I have heard from another fisho over there in Melbourne that he also can't find burley springs I wonder why not, over hear they are a big part of most fisho's tackle box. You could try phoning a tackle shop over hear and ask if they would post some over to you or check out my how to make a burley spring video and grab yourself some light weight wire and you will be in business......
      Cheers David

    Hi Dave. I'm a new subscriber and I have to say your videos are amazing.
    It's really got my fishing juices flowing again.
    Can I ask your opinion about fresh cockles vs salted dry cockles?
    Have you ever used them yourself?
    I've read a lot of mixed reviews about their effectiveness but as far as longevity of the cockle they seem pretty useful as you can store them in a container in the cupboard for however long you want and they are supposedly harder for the fish to "suck off of the hook".
    Keep up the good work mate hopefully I'll bump into you one day.😎

      Hi Mark ,Thank you thats good to hear mate. preserved baits have always had there place especially if you are traveling, fish when in larger schools and feeding tend to have a go at most anything but when theres not to much competition fresh bait is better for that reason fresh is best for me. I have never tried salted cockle I like them fresh or fresh frozen but you try them and see what you think, I have soked shelled cockles in tuna oil that preserves them they can be messy but are very good. More videos coming when I have some time. Cheers Mark.......David

    • @davidsheldonfishing9726
      @davidsheldonfishing9726  Год назад

      Hello Scooter, not a silly question it's one thing I haven't really pointed out I think. When I'm holding my fishing rod with bait casted out you will notice as well as keeping my line from the end of my rod to my sinker as tight as possible, its called keeping in touch with your sinker, I always have my right hand finger on my line also moving my finger to keep in touch with my line to feel any fish that has a nibble or a positive bite I also will move my bait by moving my rod during a nibble to make the fish think the bait is getting away so it may attack the bait harder and get hooked. I do hold my fishing rod a bit different than most people but the technique and outcome is the same however you hold your fishing rod. Hope that helps you Scooter.

    • @davidsheldonfishing9726
      @davidsheldonfishing9726  2 года назад

      G'day, well I have never heard that its good for tommies or salmon trout and never tried but I do think fish like the colour yellow, I recon salmon trout might have a go if it is moving or there is a big school and they compete for it, all fish know they have the choice to spit it out but they don't know there is a hook in it. Give it a go you never know and if it doesn't work you can have a feed.

      @davidsheldonfishing9726  Год назад

      Hello again Scooter, obviously I don't know your disability but I'm going to guess it may be your legs and you get around on a gofer or scooter, well if you can get out on a wharf or a jetty or any where you can get near the water I think you could do this for sure. Mullet generally inhabit the shore line so there is no need to go to far out on a jetty or wharf or cast far out off a beach and I think there are mullet over in Tasmania, this rig will also work for lots of other small fish. I do have another video called Australian Herring, Tommy ruff jetty rig and fishing off Rapid bay jetty, that fishing rig is also very good off a jetty that rig is also good under a float I also have a video on how to make a burley spring if nowhere sells them and I have a video about making burley for using in a burley spring you may like to watch. I hope this has helped you scooter and thank you for watching and asking for advise feel free to ask me anything and I shall help if I can. Also a good guide in fishing is do as the locals do........Cheers David

I really do hope I have answered your question correctly. also a burley bay has in it, fish heads, bread, maybe some pilchards, stuff like that just to attract the fish and make them feel hungry so you can catch them. So they say you can’t use mince for bait because it will attract sharks ???
    What about using tuna or pilchard oil in your berley - surely that will have more scent than a tiny bit of mince and more likely to draw a shark into the area .

    Been watching a few of your vids recently, they are great. Good work mate.
    As I understand the red meat issue, you can use red meat in fresh water, for yabby pots for eg, that is why you can sell it as bait I guess. But I am pretty sure it is illegal in salt water.
    Here is a link to a page which I think clearly shows you can't use meat that isn't fish.
    www.pir.sa.gov.au/recreational_fishing/rules/gear_bait_and_berley/bait_and_berley
    Hope this helps.

      Hi mate, yes I have read that pirsa fishing regulations in regards to using meat for bait and yes it does say clearly that we are not allowed to use any part of a animal for bait so I stopped using it and didn't show it as part of the bait to be used for mullet, but then I found out that the bait suppliers S.A bait were selling it (mullet mince) so I phoned them and brought it up with them saying it was illegal they said to me it was ok but they still contacted fisheries to be sure and fisheries said it was ok to use it as mullet mince with curry and bread crumbs etc so I think they should change the way the meat as bait rule is written it's a bit confusing and a bit misleading thanks you for watching and commenting on this matter I personally will keep using mince for bait if they are allowed to sell it for bait I'm going to prepare it myself for bait but we are not allowed to use it in crab nets or as burley.
