We're looking at those opening camera shots of the planets in the Ratchet & Clank series, and how they might be more important than you think.

Man I'm glad I found a video that talks about the opening frames of R&C planets. My favorite part of the original games.

To be fair, Deadlocked/Gladiator had some pretty great opening frames to some of it's courses as well.
Kronos, Orxon, and The Valix Belt are great examples. Plus those planets had great music to go alongside those shots.
Orxon most notably, as it's grimy and grungy theme was fitting for the toxic plant it was and still somewhat is.

I think the best level opening in the entire series has to go to Oltanis Orbit. Yeedil was really good but Oltanis Orbit takes the lead here ngl. Oltanis Orbit alone makes the orignal 2002 R&C worthy of being [S] tier.
Awesome video tho, keep it up man!

I’ve always wanted to find a video of someone going in depth on the opening frames of Ratchet and Clank because they were such a good part of the game that nobody talks about, going to a new planet and seeing what lies ahead

Rilgar (RaC1), Oltanis Orbit, Yeedil and Zeldrin will always be my favourite opening frames from the first games.
Thanks for making a videos about this topic!

Ironically enough, I believe Deadlocked/Gladiator has some of the best establishing shots of these games, one in particular that comes to mind, and one that I always take some time on before moving forward is Kronos. You start off with an incredibly far off shot that shows you the entire facade of the Kronos Cathedral and the immediate area around it, that gives you not just a sense of the scale of the thing but even helps set the dark and moody atmosphere of the level as well thanks to a combination of the visual and music (much like you described for every other game in this video)
So yeah, wouldn’t be fair to discard Deadlocked so quickly ;)

That Megacorp factory always hit me though. First landing on that planet, the top of it's cut off the frame. It really implicates the dominance and power of this company and you knew it was going to a tough fight all the way through.

If I recall correctly, the Future Saga also had a zoomed out shot of the world at the beginning of each level before you start moving. I haven't played those in a while because I love the PS2 Quadrilogy a lot more. But at the very least, I remember Axiom City in A Crack in Time having a great view when you enter the planet.

The opening frames of Ratchet and Clank are in fact, THE thing that made the whole series possible. When IG pitched R&C to Sony, they made early dioramas of "Jungle" and "Metropolis", and Sony was so impressed of the opening views, that even green lighted R&C 2 even before the first was made.

I have only one problem with the basic premise you started with, and that is the value of depth of field for framing. In still images and movies, where there is a subject in frame, your attention is being placed on something specific because it's important on a moment to moment basis or the composition as a whole. In video games there is nowhere that the player shouldn't look, every element in should be thought of as important. Maybe behind this bush there is a cheeky little secret? Oh, never mind, it's blurry, it's not where I should be looking.
But more than that it naturally follows the behavior of a human eye, and the participation of players as existing within the game world and not as a passive observer. If you as a participant want to look at something far away, it will become in focus because you are looking at it. Just because it's not important to the composition of a still-capture doesn't mean my eyes should glaze over it, it's literally where I'm looking! But of course there isn't any way to tell exactly what a player is trying to see at any given moment so by far the most efficient solution is: have everything be in focus. I actually get mad when I see motion blur as well, since it artificially adds something that you experience naturally despite it's absence. Even an in focus camera shot moving by quickly will appear out of focus, you don't need to blur it more! We are replicating hardware faults for the sake of authenticity, and it unimmerses me!

    • @VersionGamma
      @VersionGamma  3 года назад +2

I actually agree with you on this, I am not a fan of artificial camera artefacts in games, especially motion blur. That was kinda the point, how do you convey depth without using the traditional methods in photography, methods that don't lend themselves to games because they are an interactive medium. Depth of field was an example of how photos and videos convey depth, not how games should. Maybe that's not clear, idk I wrote this video more than a year ago, so it's not exactly my most competent script.

@@VersionGammaA second listen confirms this, maybe I was impressing a presupposition of criticism on the video and latched on to the first thing that stuck out. Either way it's a cool video, and thanks for making it.

Hey ! I have stumbled upon your channel today and have enjoyed very much some videos of yours. I watched "The Reused Music of Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal", "The Repeated Weapons of Going Commando & Up Your Arsenal" , and obviously this one. I really like these analysis, and enjoyed to know your take on these subjects. Tthe production on your videos is pretty good too. I found that sometimes during your videos you use swearing excessively and sometimes out of context. That can take the essence out of swearing and strip it from its meaning. I would say that swearing is somewhat like using salt in food: It can accentuate something that is already good, but use it too much and you'll be saturating it. In my opinion you could benefit from using this resource of speech more sparingly and choosing better when you use it. On another note that joke at 4:00 gave me a good laugh. Overall my impression on these videos was really good and i am looking forward to watch new videos of yours. I hope that you find success in your youtube career and that my advice can help you on it! Cheers
