    Good report. I love to drive the Mauna Loa road whenever I get the chance. Your report gave clarity to where the eruption is.

  • @shanemurphy464
    @shanemurphy464 Год назад +13

    Holy shit hearing “just 10 miles from saddle road” gave me some new perspective. For those who don’t know, that’s the main passageway to travel across island. There are three ways across the island but Saddle Rd closing would mean that people commuting from Hilo to Kona and vice versa would have another 30 mins to hour and a half added to their drive (which is already about an hour and a half)

    • @shanemurphy464
      @shanemurphy464 Год назад +2

      Of course the larger concern is people’s property getting covered, but lava flowing over saddle road would also be a big negative consequence

    I lived on the big island when Kilauea first erupted back in the early 80s and it was an amazing time. Since then the big island lost the black sands beach at Kalapana, along with the queen‘s bath, many homes and the local stor/ burger place. It was an amazing place. Then the huge loss/devastation of Puna in 2018 Seeing Mauna loa erupt is amazing. I have imagined it hundreds of times in my head. It could easily on the big island and I get a deep feeling of sadness when I think about the places that I’ve been that are now gone, and I hope that the volcano does not affect many people that live there. I can say if there is an affect on the people of the island, I am retired. I will go there and help do what I can. Good luck Big Island! aloha

    I hope the lava doesn't reach a kipuka. My husband and I were on the Big Island a little more than a year ago, and visited Kipuka Puaulu. (A kipuka is a defined area that the lava flows went around, so there are lots of plants and animals there. ) Puaulu is beautiful, and gives you an idea of what the whole area around Mauna Loa would look like if there hadn't been so many large lava flows. We heard lots of birds, but only saw lots of khalij pheasants there. I think the pheasants aren't a native species, but it would be a shame to lose them. The area around Puaulu is very desolate, so any birds that left would have to go a long way to find another home, and all the plants would be destroyed by a lava flow. I assume the kipuka where the nene sanctuary is located is similarly isolated. Nenes (the state bird of Hawaii, they look fairly similar to Canada geese) are endangered, and it would be terrible to lose the sanctuary where they live.

I took lots of photos of the khalij pheasants, and a couple of pictures of tree ferns in Kipuka Puaulu. I'm glad to hear that there are plenty of kipukas on the Big Island. Thank you for the great updates buddy. My Father served and I exchanged a local upbringing for traveling with him as a proud Army Brat. He was a one of a kind 100% Gung Ho ten toes in warrior that suffered NO fools lightly ergo “the beatings WILL continue until moral improves” lolz. Crazy guy like me though if I can be 1/2 the man he was I’d be honored. Now I’m the Dad and leader and am growing up for real now with Gods help in Jesus. Never knew peace existed here on earth and was raised HARD CORE agnostic but when my wife left....BOOM. All I knew that 1st week was “Jesus if you’re real I need to know....NOW”, cause if not I’ll be left to hunt pedophiles until caught, then trialed and executed or acquitted. Well....HE Came. I surrendered my heart and all I am to HIM...and I am never going back to who and what I once was. Hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah!!!

      @shanemurphy464 Год назад +2

      The difference here is that in New Orleans, you know where the floodwaters will be and where exactly to build the levee. There are too many paths for the lava to take just off of Mauna Loa, and then there’s Mauna Kea and Kilauea to worry about too. Also the scale of lava that can pour out of these volcanos would mean you’d need a massive trench/wall that’s resistant to lava, and it would need to be built in the perfect spot.

      Because the area is isolated. The instruments at this observatory measure atmospheric gases. It is where measurements showed that the Co2 content in our atmosphere has risen. Mauna Kea has vehicles that regularly travel up there to the telescopes. The vehicles exhaust would interfere with the gas readings. So they chose Mauna Loa where it is high enough and where no one travels regularly.

      @@breeze7464 Yeah ok. I worked for a Roy Yamaguchi restaurant where they didn't even know what a health code violiation was. During COVID. Ironically half the staff will wear a mask in public the rest of their lives though. They broke so many violations because the health inspector was Roys family. The staff are all family. No one was ever trained not to place the appetizer plates underneath the soap dispenser or other obvious unsanitary practices, but since I (a white guy) was the person to let them know, it would never be something they change. The staff was allowed to do whatever they wanted in fact, even after having ran the last concept to the ground (The Eating House Kapiolani). What I learned while in Hawaii is that a knife doesn't polish itself in open air. Everyone there has only ever worked with their families and no one seems to be held accountable. They loathe anyone from the mainland for "thinking they know everything" since they've actually had to try at their previous jobs and have honed skills in the process. If this sounds like I'm being discriminative I gaurantee you've never lived on the islands. They litterally have a "Kill Haole (white people from the mainland) Day" where the locals condone physical attacks against whites, which sometimes leave the victims dead. All because of the culture and skin color they had been born with. The judges and police then ensure that no one is prosecuted and everything gets brushed under the carpet. There may be some slight level of exaggerration in my words, but if you've lived in Hawaii you know the truths I speeak of. Hawaii is insecure about its place in the world, so they blame their inequities on others who don't look like them. Yes I realize that their country and culture was taken from them. That's atrocious. Alaskans don't act nearly the way Hawaiians do though and the timing was the same. Japan and China have bought all of the land on the islands causing the crazy prices, but becuase they look similar, the hate only goes towards the US mainland. Let's be real, on the whole, Hawaiians are pretty much the most racist demographic in the United States and their work ethic reflects their accountability levels.
