  • This is a video of firsts. This is my first time working with paper mache in any artistic way and this is the first video I've made that was mainly done on a different video editor than the one that I usually use. (Shotcut) I plan on doing more with paper mache and sculpting in the future. Please leave your thoughts below.

Thanks for sharing Rick, I can't wait to see the entire process in the next video. I made a mirror cut out for a friend years ago of a young boy kneeling down praying for his restroom vanity. Him and his wife loved it. This gives me some great ideas.

This is a lovely first sculpture! Congrats! Few beginners make anything so sensitive and polished. My recipe for paper mâché solution uses one part flour to one part water plus a tsp or more of salt then I add an equivalent amount of mod podge which ends up becoming extremely strong and almost water proof. Not quite able to stand a rain storm but certainly tolerant of a spill or two and wet wipe ups. I tend to paint my sculptures with acrylic to make them last longer but I just loved your romance novel pages statement! Again, bravo!

My grandma does the exact same thing. Then seals them with many coats of water based poly. She has them in her patio area, they go through the elements all year long however aren't directly rained on. Some of hers have been outside since I was a kid and she coats them occasionally. I do a similar thing now, but began spraying with clear epoxy. Have had great results my eagle has been in the year for its 3rd summer and I haven't touched it. Blows people's minds that it's foam, spray foam. Wire, mache all mostly recycled unless I find places to use the spray foam to help bond and hold weak spots I don't want to inner carve. Great comment tho!
