Very cool detail I haven’t seen anyone mention, Lanius calls himself “the East” but later in this conversation he calls you “Man of the West” showing that at this point he sees you as an equal and a parallel to him.
He sees the Courier as a true equal. Someone who while may not seem much, is indeed a true foe, not by gun, nor sword, but he understands history, and that is the greatest weapon of all.

I think it takes great strength for someone like lanius who is so enthralled in war to admit that courier is indeed right, that they can take the west, but that they in the process would lose the east as their army can't hold both territories
pretty sure the fact the the courier single handedly slaughtered dozens of Legionaries throughout the battle was also a factor that influenced Lanius' decision to leave

Legate Lanius, legendary for his ability to sense any weakness of an army failed to sense the weakness of his army. In fact, his weakness is the complete same as the weakness of the NCR: being spread too thin.

This dude has: A Strength of 9 A Perception of 8 A Endurance of 8 A Charisma of 7 A Intelligence of 6 A Agility of 7 A Luck of 7 920 Hit Points 100% Poison Resistance 100% Radiation Resistance 85% Fire Resistance A Damage Threshold of 19 100 in Melee Weapons And a 100 in Unarmed This guy is literally a super solider, better than your average man in literally every aspect. Edit: He is also 80% faster than the player character, allowing him to catch you even with both legs crippled. He has one of the highest fatigue points in the game, making it almost impossible to stun/knock him out. He is nearly impossible to disarm. He has a 15% chance of knocking down the player with each hit. And he is 6’11, making him the tallest human non-player character in New Vegas.
it isn't just him saying "oh my god you're right i'm so dumb your the smartest person ever" its an actual dialogue between the player character and a character that you persuade, not dominate. He doesn't completely agree with you but still there's a sense of respect towards the player character and i love it.
It's my belief that this mutual respect and understanding is a large motivator behind his eventual decision to stand down. It's certainly quality writing, and the delivery is top-notch by any standard.
@@majik5194 that's due to a programming bug, not something specifically added to happen. Lanius is supposed to move at 160% speed in combat, and the cutscene where he walks off is incorrectly flagged as combat. It's a problem with the engine.
Incredible. I imagine those who reached this point and saw the "Speech 65...Speech 75..." options genuinely felt a rush of excitement in discovering for themselves that there is an alternative to the final boss fight. What a great way to design the ending.
Once i realized speech was hella useful on my first playthrough i just statdumped the hell out of it. That was exactly what i thought when i reached lanius. I was still using an old (maxed out tbf) varmint rifle and a marksman carbine, along with leather armor, i was stealthy, BUT NOWHERE NEAR ABLE TO FIGHT THIS GUY. Then i see "Speech 55...Speech 65...75...90..." Thank fucking god I put points into speech
Not exactly, sure he'll take the west, the NCR will stop existing, ever. and He'll win, but then what ? he can't administer and lead both the east AND west, he'd have to meander around, and spread his legions apart, where they'll be vulnurable to rebellions, raiders, and the plethora of crisis we see the fallout world going through.
Just wanna note, at 3:30, if you pick the "you'll retreat?" option, the negotiation fails and Lanius attacks you. Lanius is too prideful to admit that withdrawing from the Dam is a retreat. I really like that, dialogue that is solved by picking the right things to say instead of having a big enough number.
That detail doesn´t really have a lot of power when the rest of the conversation was highlighted by "speech 100". I would like to return to the original Fallout´s dialogue system. Having the appropriate speech will open up the correct answers, but it´s up to you to know what to pick.

@@piyo744 I respect your opinion but in my mind I don't really agree. The Stormlcloacks are fighting for a god(Who would eventually return once the Empire can defeat the dominion) and weakening the empire instead of strengthening it. General Tulius even hints at the end at the end of the game peace won't last. Skyrim can only survive against an attack with the help of the empire, because even if stormcloaks wim the province will be weakened. The Empire is more of a long term solution in general.
Looking back on this again, it's another thing that makes this so great. People expect strong individuals to defeat anyone through strength, yet others are able to neutralize supersoldiers without laying a scratch on them. One of the biggest lines for here was how the weakness of the NCR will be the problem, not what makes them strong. Lanius was infamous for scanning weaknesses like sharks sensing a single drop of weaknesses, yet couldn't see that in his own army. You were able to show them that without ever having a single threat to violence: meekness ≠ weakness

@@Father_Wendigo Oliver can also be convinced to back down but it isn't a nuanced because it's incredibly stupid of him to think he can fight all of your securitrons in the first place. Convincing someone to not throw his life and the lives of his men away like an idiot isn't as satisfying as convincing someone that even if they win this battle they will lose the war eventually due to logistics.
That's actually an extremely appropriate argument. Had the Legion taken the west, they would have repeated the fate of the Roman empire, which got bigger than it could handle.

@@localafghanshepherd7414 in the beginning of the game your just a regular guy doing a job and all of a sudden you are taken and shot in the head twice, but it didn't kill you. With 2 bullet holes in the head you rose up from your shallow grave and were fueled by revenge or something more. It caused you to go on a adventure unlike any you could have imagined and all that was unlocked by violence. Instead of shrinking away from it your rose to the occasion. Lanius saw that in you and he was wise enough to to know it was the 2 bullet wounds that awoke you.
Obsidian has worked with less time before and made equally polished games. Obsidian simply sucks at managing time, which is why nearly every game they release falls under the same template of having to cut half of the game's planned content, launching broken, and having loyal fans blame anyone but Obsidian.
Comic Sans Even if that were 100% true, you still cannot deny the content, depth, and story we get in New Vegas, which trumps anything that Bethesda had made for Fallout. Named characters in NV have logical dialogue sequences, in-depth stories to tell, and meaningful interactions for the player. In 4, the dialogue has the verbosity and detail of a children's story, plus occasional _non sequiturs_, a big writing no-no. In NV, there can be dozens of ways to talk to someone, as does real life. In 4 you are granted a meager four dialogue choices. And don't even get me started on the illusions of choice inherent with many FO4 dialogues. FO3 is even worse in terms of optionality; your plot is fixed with no possibility of non canon endings such as joining the Enclave. An RPG needs optionality that the script allows. New Vegas does that better than 3, 4, and the abomination prequel known as 76.
@@comicsans1689 Yeah. That happened with KOTOR 2: The Sith Lords as well. Many SW fans prefers it over BioWare's original KOTOR (which is also an extremely great RPG) because the characters and companions aren't just "light-sided, dark-sided" but because Obsidian rushed it almost half of the game's contents were cut and, without a mod that restores said cut-contents, the ending fell very flat.
@@yvainestoion4629 Even with restored content, I still think that the game falls flat. It doesn't help that the game's narrative and mechanics contradict each other. Kreia spends the entire game lecturing you on not being mindlessly good or evil, but if you follow her advice you weaken your own character. Funny enough, Kreia is also about doing things to strengthen yourself, which you can only do by min-maxing either light or dark. The game doesn't help by giving you promoted classes that are tied to only lightside or darkside characters. Ironically, playing a neutral character in KOTOR 1 is more viable than KOTOR 2.

Lanius said after you convince him that he knew that Caesar himself was already suffering from the problem; "even now, Ceasar drew too much of the Legion's blood needed there for... this." He didn't actually think he would hold both as that wasn't his concern; all he thought of to do was to win the battle. "That does not mean we cannot succeed." He was convinced afterwards after the Courier sets in the reality the Legion would lose the East. And before "BASIC MILITARY STRATEGY", this is a larping ancient Rome, who already suffered from overextension as well.
At the beginning, they were basically enemies. At the end, they were still enemies, but they respected each other. And that's some really powerful writing, right there.
I finished the game some days ago and had max speech just for fun, but got intrigued when I saw the option to use it in the dialogue, I used all types of chems and magazines before the battle, but once I talked with him, I was happy that I didn’t need to use violence and that he was more than just a great warrior, this is the first game I ever played that i convinced the villain to stop the fight just by talking with them and it wasn’t something like “Yes you’re right I’m the bad guy i regret everything”, it felt surreal, and I wish I played more games with this type of writing.
@@Fumerail Yes, i felt like that especially in Mass Effect. There the diologue goes like "You're bad" "No, you don't get it." "I do, and you're bad" "You're right" And this game was genious to make you convince the guy based on his philosophy.
2:50 I love Lanius’ reaction to that line. “Your weakness? You seek to thwart me by claiming the Legion is too strong for you?” like he sounds genuinely confused. The conversation up to that point was point and counterpoint, but the Courier throws that curveball and catches Lanius off guard, he never expected you to make such a claim. Little touches like that help make this a masterwork of dialogue exchange.
At that point he begin to realize the issues with the campaign. All the points the courier makes edges away at the stone in Lanius’s mind that is the war. When you mention the issues of the NCR, he sees now what may happen should they expand. Conquest can only carry an army so far, sooner or later when there’s no food or supplies to maintain the legion or nation altogether, it will collapse. The Legion is Lanius’s life, and he seems only to better it and protect it through the will of Caesar. So when you pick all of the options correctly, he eventually admits to his desire to keep the legion together, albeit indirectly. And this culminated finally into his eventual “surrender” where he reminds the Mojave that he is not going to be gone forever. Masterpiece, absolute masterpiece
Fallout New Vegas: Lanius can be convinced in a number of ways that the Legion cannot win this day. You can use your high understanding of economics and infrastructure to make him understand that Legion supply lines could not carry a campaign west, and that the NCRs weakness is their greatest strength. You can remind him of history, that the Malpais Legate failed because of the same reasons Lanius was about to fail. The Legions infrastructure can be criticized against him, causing him to fall back to defend his own position within the Legion. If all that fails, if you're honorable you can challenge him to one-on-one combat, making the fight against him slightly easier. If nothing comes together you fight him and several elite Legion soldiers, proving that he truly is the Monster of the East by being fast as a Cazador, hitting like a Deathclaw, all with the tactical mind a Legate needs. Fallout 3: you again
I think I remember convincing him he’s taking the dam so easily because the NCR want to get the majority of his forces inside and slaughter them whilst they’re trapped in the NCRs concrete walls, the most dangerous animal being a desperate one, but now I’m not sure if I just made that up or not.
I think it’s because I kept Ulysses from lonesome road alive, and asked him how he would beat lanais, so he said to make him think the NCR is more capable than he thought, using his fear of failure to delay his victory.
Completely ruined it with him running away at the end, he should've walked out of there slowly and calm, this quick dash in a blink of an eye as he finish talking kind of made me laugh, its hard to take it seriously like this.
Lanius is the luckiest character in all of fallout history because he got to survive an encounter with the courier with little more than a calm discussion about logistics and the wisdom of not overtaxing your military.

From lanius pov you stand right before him and considering how ruthless the courier can be (I'm talking killing Benny in his own home Killing house and possibly even Caesar and vulpes ) And starting with near nothing And the NCR not being able to do any of that despite having so many tools for it . Courier is just a man, lone wolf in vast wasteland filled with many people like him. but what make him difference from other? his determination give him strength to kill his 'killer' in his own home, his persistent give him endurance to survive in wasteland chaose, his understanding,perception and intelligence let him to befriend with many important people from various factions by him solving their problem, and lastly but not the least that his experience giving him actual skill and strength to kill his enemies. the thing he does are not something exceptionally rare but usually it's done by a group of people or community but him doing it alone as a lone wolf proving himself to lanius that he is indeed an equal to him in terms of survival of fittest. the double headshot making courier 6 stronger instead of killing him is what lanius see as courier 6's catalyst
Given how hard Legion had been spanking NCR ever since First Battle, and how courier is the only person that managed to undo all that, yes one can get an idea why Lanius would think that way.
Fallout is a shooting game (mostly, unless you go full melee build on your first playthrough intentionally lol). Fights tend not to be interesting when all you do is just pull the trigger over and over and run around like a chicken without a head. Guns are boring. Change my mind.

What a chad. I mean, some people can't survive getting punched stiff across the face, let alone two nine millimeter cases of solid lead. The Courier survived because something in him awakened when he was shot. Probably just a determination to see change in the wasteland. That's basically why the player is so powerful and the only character who levels up so frequently.

I'm amazed Lanius could even be talked down at all. Everything you hear about him makes him seem like a dumb angry brute, especially when compared to the pragmatic and level-headed Graham. Yet, when the truth is staring him in the face, he accepts it, swallows his pride, and moves on. It reminds me of the conversations you have with Saren in the first Mass Effect. Top notch writing.
I always assumed that it was a deliberate play by Caesar to spread stories about Lanius as a blood thirsty savage in order to scare the NCR and weaken their morall. And in reality as we can see here Lanius is actually a pretty intelligent and well spoken person.
@@Jinxbreaker It's even higher than Caesar's Intelligence stat. Lanius is definitely way smarter than what the tales consider him to be. And if you play your cards right, he knows when to fold them as well. His character is incredible.

He must think of you as a total badass, two shots to the head couldnt stop you, the glory of fighting you would be one of great honor but i love how he comments it would be a great battle indeed if the entire west was like you imagine an army of folks who bullets to the head didnt kill bet he wouldn't be able to contain his thrill at the idea of fighting such an army if he saw it.
I'll be honest.. it did the same to me. I don't do survival of the fittest but there's something about being determined and strong enough to awaken power in the midst of adversity and chaos
It's a great piece of dialogue because it shows that you prove Lanius right by defeating him. It's the challenges and the mortal situations that the Courier has to go through that make him strong enough to win the battle of Hoover Damn, be it with words or with power. "If the West is one day filled with the ones such as you", as in - if the West becomes strong as the East became strong. Would stability, peace or comfort make you experienced enough to stand up to Lanius on that faithful day? In this moment, you are closer to Lanius than to any NCR general or Vegas banker. It's brilliant.

I think most people that bring up the "Survival of the fittest" don't actually know what that means and therefore don't really believe in it. But Lanius does. And that's why his words carry more weight, because, argue whether he's right or wrong, he has integrity. He stands by his words, and it is through this that you can convince him that retreat is better, because the Legion is not fit enough to survive trying to hold all of the west AND the east.
Yeah I really miss the old conversation style. it's a shame they implemented a streamlined conversation style like that of mass effect. to shame Bethesda, to shame! But everything else is amazing lol
a nice detail: succeeding the speech checks doesn't simply convince him instantly, it just means that the conversation doesn't devolve into violence right there you, the player, have to actually think like legate, talk to him as an equal, and actually use real arguments to convince him to leave without violence and even after he"s convinced, saying the wrong thing can start up the boss fight anyway the best rpgs aren't just numbers and killing things, they have good writing to go with it, and new vegas' writing is top notch if i ever get this game, i might just use a speech build at some point, could be cool
Far Harbor in Fallout 4 did something similar. When you're trying to convince the Far Harbor people to not massacre the Robot/Synth Colony it's not enough to have max speech/charisma, you had to do all the sidequests to get the individual people on your side first.
@@ShadowSonic2 it's really a shame that morality didn't play into fallout 4 as much as it did in Far Harbour. For me the answer is simple and you don't even get allowed to do it Minutemen or Brotherhood cease control of Institute HQ stop synth production.
Some things to remember if you do end up doing a speech build: Don't forget that you have to solve some things yourself Don't dump everything in Charisma: make it 1, tag barter and speech, and use the SPECIAL points somewhere else If you want a pacifist build, one of the many things you'll need it terrifying presence That's all for now
@@triheadwar1996 The big problem with Fallout 4 is that it was made in the thought of making it primarily a console game. Don't know why they couldn't just make it for PC then tweak it for it to fit on console but it speaks volumes about Obsidian's Fallout and Bethesda's Fallout.

@@EveryoneElseIsWeirdImNormal First of all, Speech and Barter are all roleplaying skills, therefore if you play casually and go OP perks and skills then that's your fault, not the game, and besides, you don't need it to progress, If You Couldn't Convince Lanius then you can Beat the shit outta him. Second of all, the first thing to learn about Lanius is that he's all about honor, even in this Encounter after you convince him, if you pick the dialogue option "So, You'll Retreat?" He immediately gets defensive, and goes hostile instantly, which reinforces the idea of him being all about honor, because he sees Retreating as cowardice and he ordered the death of his tribe because they surrendered and lanius saw that as cowardice, and asked Caesar to kill his tribe, Because he's all About HONOR, yeah he's a warrior but he's not stupid. And who or what told you that he decides to quit the attack on The Mojave?, all you do is Delay the inevitable not stop it. Also, it could be extremely possible that Caesar said all that the prop up Lanius as "The Monster of the East" and whatnot, because at this point you didn't join The legion yet and Caesar wants to remind you(Their potential enemy) who you're facing against, and it could also be possible that Caesar is lying to you about Lanius not caring about the Legion and is only loyal to him to make it seem like you can't provoke him by killing Legionaires, and even IF that's true, Lanius still has to care about the Legion because Caesar is the Leader and Lanius is loyal to him, it all could be a lie to prop up lanius With Caesar same with his hegelian dialectics.

2:28 I noticed he crossed his arms after he learns of the plan failing. I don’t know if they thought this far ahead. But generally crossing arms is a defensive posture (not for combat) but in terms of body language.
I’m pretty sure all Fallout NPCs in Fallout 3 and New Vegas start crossing their arms at random anytime in dialogue. Sometimes I get bored listening to conversations I already heard before and start noticing their body language.
This dialogue alone is making me consider playing this game even though it's a genre I've never really been interested in. New Vegas seems to actually have a soul, like the writers actually wanted to make you think.
Fun Fact: Caesar build his legion based off of Roman Empire knowing it would eventually fail due to growing to large and not being able to control everything. This conversation with Lanius pretty much brings up that problem. If you take the west you will not be able to control the east. Making him realize this he backs down his troops and does not repeat the history that Roman Empire Caesar and (Legion) Caesar pretty much did. Pretty deep meaning if you ask me. Lesson: those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Actually, when talking to Caesar, he points out that he's trying to stop his conquest for a bit at New Vegas by renaming it his capital and stabilizing things to make a legitimate nation. However, he doesn't state how he will do this, so this can be taken as nothing more than wishful thinking on his part.

After all these years of playing this game I just now realized that two bullets awakening you is a metaphor for the player taking control of the courier because before your shot in the head you have no control until after the opening cutscene.
Sort of like The Fledgling from Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. He/she is another human and the moment the player take control, they become, if the player choose violence as playstyle, "An engine of Cainite Fury" as Andrei The Tzmisce would call it.

Actually, if Bethesda was developing NV the Legion wouldn't exist. Because it's to well thought out and creative for them. They'd probably just reuse The Enclave again.
+Dennis M That's interesting, because I managed to bring peace to Freeside, Boulder City, Red Rock Canyon, Primm, the Strip, the Brotherhood, the Enclave remnants, Repconn, Jacobstown, Zion, Big MT, and the Divide, I helped my companions develop as characters, and I ended the entire main conflict peacefully with my speech skill in New Vegas. That's excluding all the other skill and perk checks both in and out of dialogue that brought peaceful solutions to quest, bypassed certain parts of quests, or net me more info, more money, or better rewards from npcs. I could also use all these skills and perks to cause even more chaos instead of peace.
Well technically you're not required to engage the Powder Gangers. You could skip Primm entirely, getting the information about Benny elsewhere, or just showing up at the Tops without any prompting. Or if you're a sneaking oriented character, you could slip in, get the information you want out of the captured deputy, and leave the town to rot. Hell if you're an NCR guy, you can just ignore Benny's whole plot, and work with them the rest of the game.
Instead of this savage but smart military leader continuing to smash his forces against the dam and eventually dying, weakening the legion as leaving its leadership uncertain, he saves his remaining forces and develops and stabilizes the legion internally, with a core loyal force to ensure compliance even if he was defeated at the dam A legion victory is a loss to NCR for sure, but the long 15 is just as much, if not more of a choke point as the dam, and far longer. Mojave airport itself would likely hold out for some time, and the legion would bleed. Independent Or House Vegas is far from ideal from the NCR's perspective, but either is a buffer zone against the remaining legion and a trading partner, once they pull themselves together about the defeat. It's arguably even less able to invade NCR in ether route, and in terms of expansion theres nothing stopping NCR from spreading north into Washington and South into Mexico instead of east. Outright annexation is their ideal, of course, allowing them to fortify the dam and even the east side of the Colorado, putting an end to raids, as the legion likely collapses into infighting after not only Cesar but his second in command and at least a few other higher ups all are died or disgraced along with its greatest forces.
@@Joesolo13 With House or Independent, some of your actions end up benefitting the NCR anyways, like them investigating and reinforcing their trading if you give the evidence during Cass' personal quest or letting Chief Hanalan off the hook as he then returns to become a popular senator protesting against Kimball and Oliver. With the defeat Kimball's thrown out and replaced with a more competent president if I recall correctly. For me personally I see House as the ending that benefits all three as he has a legitimate plan for the Mojave, Lanius can reinforce the Legion better than Caesar ever did, and the NCR can focus better on the home front.
@@BlazinVoid59 Mr. House's ending with very good karma is the best imo, it stops the expansionism of the ncr and the legion, while humanity will benefit of house's intelligence and the empathy of the courier, i said empathy because in one of the ending's slides it says that the courier makes sure that Mr. House doesn't do anything that degrades humanity, like being corrupt for example, so the courier makes sure that he stays on the right path, one thing people seem to forget is that The courrier works with Mr. House and for him, simply because House knows he could get killed anytime by him.

It's crazy how Lanius almost seems like a better leader than Caesar he's willing to give up the Mojave campaign because he recognises that it would overextend the legion and lead it to its death. Meanwhile Ceasar is obsseded with the idea of conquering Hoover dam because he's obsseded with emulating the real Julius Caesar. And in his drive to satiate his own ego Caesar will probably just overextend the legion
Caesar is a visionary, driven to great things by dreams of conquest and power. But Lanius is a warrior and conqueror of a simpler sort, which means he’s given to more practical thinking about his objectives and the opposition he faces. To Caesar, the Dam was the Rubicon, his everything, and Vegas the gemstone to set in his new crown, the NCR his ideological rivals. To Lanius? The Dam is another fortified position, Vegas another city to burn, NCR another tribe to conquer. Why rush things? He isn’t dying of a brain tumour.
The Courier can end a whole war and spare hundreds of thousands of lives using only his inhumanly persuasive skills. A golden tongue, an unshakable frame, and willpower of steel: those were the weapons who impended a huge war with no blood spill. How truly amazing.
Actually, you still have to murder, like, 80 legion soldiers to get to Lanius, and if you don't kill them, NCR will. But yeah. Minimal bloodshed. Definitely.
Not gonna lie, when I played this part I was so happy I had good speech because I could NOT kill this man no matter what I did, I was out of all my ammo.
I wish I chose the option to speak and resolve it peacefully instead of shooting him twice with my holorifle and killing him. My speech was already at 90 and my dumbass didn't think to read a magazine
If anything that makes it even more dramatic and powerful, you’re out of ammo, out of stims, yet you still walk up to this monster of a man, towering over you like a mountain, and try to talk him out of attacking Hoover Dam.
And on that day, the legion was driven back, not by the NCR, not by the ace up Mr House's sleeve, not by nothing but one smooth talking cowboy, yessir...
Funny enough, for a while I always thought about how this speech was sort of pulled out of the ass of the Courier for a speech check alone. It felt like logistics alone wouldn't have convinced Lanius, only loyal to Caesar, and that a mere stranger from his perspective would've done nothing to dampen his momentum. But in the Lonesome Road, when you talk to Ulysses at the end as he overlooks the Divide, it made sense where The Courier got this from. Ulysses tells that Lanius has his strength and weakness are the same - in his title. Putting the fear of losing and damaging his image would stop him cold. Ulysses also says to remind him of past failures in reference to Graham's attack of the Dam would pause him like nothing else, in fear of removing his legendary status. You can see this subtlety laid in the dialogue. This especially holds true if you bring up Graham's failure as a bluff too, but even without, I can see why this shakes Lanius. The Speech check is entirely in convincing that this battle would destroy what he represents: an undefeated conqueror. Once Lanius' momentum is paused cold by this, and the fear of losing worms into him with the history of Hoover Dam and the campaign of the East, only then does the logistics and attrition become justification to leave. It wouldn't have been without the essential touch of his reputation at stake. That's why this isn't an Intelligence check, its Speech alone. The outcome was obvious, anyone with intelligence including Lanius would see it, but the only way to make Lanius care was piercing his status. *That's* some brilliant writing.
Joshua Graham is on the same level. His "oh daughter of babylon who ought to be destroyed" speech is sensational. Bethesda does a great job developing their characters. Are there other games like these? (protip: Have Skyrim)

Compare this to the completely on-rails final chapters of FO4. Obsidian are the undisputed masters of putting the "RP" into their "RPGs". I miss this level of player choice, Ir eally do.

I agree with the 'on-rails' criticism part. But you know what I don't miss? Underdeveloped, flawed partner mechanics. I remember more than one instance where I wasn't allowed into Caesar's tent because of my alleged 'companion', even though they weren't even there at the time. I then had to track them down just to say 'stay'. Not to mention the fact that Fallout 4 had the most straightforward perk system and fixed VATs.
New Vegas endings: House: You helped the only person with a plan for humanity. You might see yourself as a hero for that but House isn't perfect. His "gifts" were ways he can use to spy on settlements and while he has a plan, he doesn't view people as people, just customers that'll buy his products and he'll wipe out any and all threats to his "rule". Legion: you helped a brutal regime rise to power. They enslave and torture but they brought civilization to the wasteland. For all the bad they do, you helped bring a sense of order to the Mojave. NCR: you helped the "good guys" but unlike House they have no plans for humanity's future other than just holding their land. And unlike Legion, nothing really changes for the better as raiders and the fiends are still out there. Independent: you helped a region gain independence from two warring factions. The people who live there love you for it, even removing House is something everyone appreciates. The "best ending" but you made the same mistake as House, relying on a single person (in your case a robot). Everyone says what you did was for the best but they don't know the robot in charge of House's securitrons and tech is a robot that literally cannot say no. Until he reveals that he's downloading a program left by House. One that'll make him more assertive. You now left the fate of New Vegas in the hands of a robot you know nothing about, one that'll stop obeying you eventually. Fallout 4 endings: Minutemen: you're the good guy, loved by all. Railroad: you're the good guy but no one knows what you did. Brotherhood: you're a good guy along with the other soldiers. Institute: you're a good guy even if people don't understand.
Actually I believe it’s confirmed that the “assertive” personality is just Yes Man making it so no one but you can order him around. So no one can just waltz in and steal Yes Man from you essentially
Like QuadVox said, the devs have clarified that Yes Man is not going to betray the Courier and that his upgrade is to make it so that he cannot be easily controlled by anyone besides the Courier. I don't know where OP got the idea that he's "downloading a program left by House" because that's incorrect.

@@damsen978 Using this engine cut down dramatically on the development time since they were able to reuse assets from Fallout 3 and basically the entire gameplay mechanics and functions. I doubt it would have been possible to create New Vegas in the same timespan in a different engine, since they would to basically build all those assets and mechanics from the ground up, which would have probably taken 1 year of development alone without even working on content, like quests.

One of the greatest written dialogue segments in the entire franchise, which is no easy feat when we consider things like one or two of Joshua Graham's monologues. Brilliant writers behind New Vegas, and that's one reason why it has a stronger legacy than any other Fallout game.

The writing in shit like that is the opposite of thought-provoking and the wording is about as subtle as a sledgehammer through a door. Also the fact that you can have such a conversation and talk down someone who has the reputation of a mindless brute of a man is one great aspect of this sequence.
Too bad it is far and few between the great dialogue and the regular ass dialogue. I like new vegas, but I think people overestimate to absurd degrees.
I love the parallel to history here.. After the Western Roman Empire fell, Emperor Justinian of the Eastern part sent Belisarius, one of the greatest generals to ever live, to retake the west. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Belisarius did the unthinkable. He not only retook Rome, but held it against a massive siege. But, the Persians attacked he East. Belisarius was recalled. The Roman Empire would never be whole again, and the East was now weakened. Clever folk behind NV.
Music in games developed or produced by Bethesda is typically stellar. In fact, it's probably the one thing I would say they haven't managed to screw up over time.

@@redazthegreat5518 Yeah, especially in FO 1 and 2, reading was easily half the game time and it was worth it because the writing was irreverent, thought-provoking, unsettling and disturbing, or just downright fucking funny. New dialogue was generally one of the motivating rewards for exploration, and it was worth it most of the time. Also, having more fleshed out dialogue is not a bad thing in an RPG. Play something like say, Divinity OS2 (as an example of a VERY verbose, modern RPG where you can play as a faceless RPG hero), and while most of the written and spoken lines are for NPCs, most of the player options have a fair bit of character or wit to them. It works and doesn't bother immersion since it's well-written and thematically consistent, and the options tend to follow the archetypical RPG flavors of "Eager," "Reluctant," "Distrustful," "Curious," "Comic Relief," etc. I'm honestly not very impressed with this cutscene and dialogue tree overall (it's a pretty ham-fisted and abrupt argument for such a critical situation, on both sides), but it's at least aiming in the right direction by just being there.

I do wanna note that a developer mentioned hundreds of times where voice lines were recorded, this was because they accidentally made a teenager play a sex worker that advertises in new vegas if I'm not wrong. (and for more context, they don't even know how it happened.)

I love how outrageous Lanius’s ideals seem until he ultimately proves them by that one amazing beautiful line about the 2 bullet marks. The courier was just that, a courier. They weren’t anybody special. Strength and battle is what gave the courier the opportunity to rise. I love obsidian dude imagine if they simply had more time to work on this game.
This game is Obsidian’s Mangum Opus. The slight change in music when he says that line is perfect. And like you said, in this instance it’s irrefutable. Violence changed the Courier and the Mojave in general, forever.

Very cool detail I haven’t seen anyone mention, Lanius calls himself “the East” but later in this conversation he calls you “Man of the West” showing that at this point he sees you as an equal and a parallel to him.
He sees the Courier as a true equal. Someone who while may not seem much, is indeed a true foe, not by gun, nor sword, but he understands history, and that is the greatest weapon of all.

I think it takes great strength for someone like lanius who is so enthralled in war to admit that courier is indeed right, that they can take the west, but that they in the process would lose the east as their army can't hold both territories

it isn't just him saying "oh my god you're right i'm so dumb your the smartest person ever" its an actual dialogue between the player character and a character that you persuade, not dominate. He doesn't completely agree with you but still there's a sense of respect towards the player character and i love it.
It's my belief that this mutual respect and understanding is a large motivator behind his eventual decision to stand down. It's certainly quality writing, and the delivery is top-notch by any standard.

@@majik5194 that's due to a programming bug, not something specifically added to happen. Lanius is supposed to move at 160% speed in combat, and the cutscene where he walks off is incorrectly flagged as combat. It's a problem with the engine.

Incredible. I imagine those who reached this point and saw the "Speech 65...Speech 75..." options genuinely felt a rush of excitement in discovering for themselves that there is an alternative to the final boss fight. What a great way to design the ending.

Once i realized speech was hella useful on my first playthrough i just statdumped the hell out of it.
That was exactly what i thought when i reached lanius. I was still using an old (maxed out tbf) varmint rifle and a marksman carbine, along with leather armor, i was stealthy, BUT NOWHERE NEAR ABLE TO FIGHT THIS GUY.

Just wanna note, at 3:30, if you pick the "you'll retreat?" option, the negotiation fails and Lanius attacks you. Lanius is too prideful to admit that withdrawing from the Dam is a retreat. I really like that, dialogue that is solved by picking the right things to say instead of having a big enough number.

I would like to return to the original Fallout´s dialogue system. Having the appropriate speech will open up the correct answers, but it´s up to you to know what to pick.

The Stormlcloacks are fighting for a god(Who would eventually return once the Empire can defeat the dominion) and weakening the empire instead of strengthening it. General Tulius even hints at the end at the end of the game peace won't last. Skyrim can only survive against an attack with the help of the empire, because even if stormcloaks wim the province will be weakened. The Empire is more of a long term solution in general.

There was a greentext retelling some roleplay server alot like that, had a pretty good story if you've got the stomach for chanspeak.
Looking back on this again, it's another thing that makes this so great. People expect strong individuals to defeat anyone through strength, yet others are able to neutralize supersoldiers without laying a scratch on them. One of the biggest lines for here was how the weakness of the NCR will be the problem, not what makes them strong. Lanius was infamous for scanning weaknesses like sharks sensing a single drop of weaknesses, yet couldn't see that in his own army. You were able to show them that without ever having a single threat to violence: meekness ≠ weakness
You can just feel how Lanius' mindset is changing through his talking. Great acting.

With 2 bullet holes in the head you rose up from your shallow grave and were fueled by revenge or something more. It caused you to go on a adventure unlike any you could have imagined and all that was unlocked by violence. Instead of shrinking away from it your rose to the occasion. Lanius saw that in you and he was wise enough to to know it was the 2 bullet wounds that awoke you.

Obsidian has worked with less time before and made equally polished games. Obsidian simply sucks at managing time, which is why nearly every game they release falls under the same template of having to cut half of the game's planned content, launching broken, and having loyal fans blame anyone but Obsidian.
Comic Sans Even if that were 100% true, you still cannot deny the content, depth, and story we get in New Vegas, which trumps anything that Bethesda had made for Fallout. Named characters in NV have logical dialogue sequences, in-depth stories to tell, and meaningful interactions for the player. In 4, the dialogue has the verbosity and detail of a children's story, plus occasional _non sequiturs_, a big writing no-no. In NV, there can be dozens of ways to talk to someone, as does real life. In 4 you are granted a meager four dialogue choices. And don't even get me started on the illusions of choice inherent with many FO4 dialogues. FO3 is even worse in terms of optionality; your plot is fixed with no possibility of non canon endings such as joining the Enclave. An RPG needs optionality that the script allows. New Vegas does that better than 3, 4, and the abomination prequel known as 76.

Many SW fans prefers it over BioWare's original KOTOR (which is also an extremely great RPG) because the characters and companions aren't just "light-sided, dark-sided" but because Obsidian rushed it almost half of the game's contents were cut and, without a mod that restores said cut-contents, the ending fell very flat.
@@yvainestoion4629 Even with restored content, I still think that the game falls flat. It doesn't help that the game's narrative and mechanics contradict each other. Kreia spends the entire game lecturing you on not being mindlessly good or evil, but if you follow her advice you weaken your own character. Funny enough, Kreia is also about doing things to strengthen yourself, which you can only do by min-maxing either light or dark. The game doesn't help by giving you promoted classes that are tied to only lightside or darkside characters. Ironically, playing a neutral character in KOTOR 1 is more viable than KOTOR 2.

He didn't actually think he would hold both as that wasn't his concern; all he thought of to do was to win the battle. "That does not mean we cannot succeed."
He was convinced afterwards after the Courier sets in the reality the Legion would lose the East.
And before "BASIC MILITARY STRATEGY", this is a larping ancient Rome, who already suffered from overextension as well.
At the beginning, they were basically enemies.
At the end, they were still enemies, but they respected each other. And that's some really powerful writing, right there.
I finished the game some days ago and had max speech just for fun, but got intrigued when I saw the option to use it in the dialogue, I used all types of chems and magazines before the battle, but once I talked with him, I was happy that I didn’t need to use violence and that he was more than just a great warrior, this is the first game I ever played that i convinced the villain to stop the fight just by talking with them and it wasn’t something like “Yes you’re right I’m the bad guy i regret everything”, it felt surreal, and I wish I played more games with this type of writing.

2:50 I love Lanius’ reaction to that line. “Your weakness? You seek to thwart me by claiming the Legion is too strong for you?” like he sounds genuinely confused. The conversation up to that point was point and counterpoint, but the Courier throws that curveball and catches Lanius off guard, he never expected you to make such a claim. Little touches like that help make this a masterwork of dialogue exchange.
He got mindfucked by the best
At that point he begin to realize the issues with the campaign. All the points the courier makes edges away at the stone in Lanius’s mind that is the war. When you mention the issues of the NCR, he sees now what may happen should they expand. Conquest can only carry an army so far, sooner or later when there’s no food or supplies to maintain the legion or nation altogether, it will collapse.
The Legion is Lanius’s life, and he seems only to better it and protect it through the will of Caesar. So when you pick all of the options correctly, he eventually admits to his desire to keep the legion together, albeit indirectly. And this culminated finally into his eventual “surrender” where he reminds the Mojave that he is not going to be gone forever.
Masterpiece, absolute masterpiece
He doesn't expect you to claim the NCR is weak and then say the legion will inherit it

The Courier just hooked Lanius with a verbal right that he didn't see coming.
Fallout New Vegas: Lanius can be convinced in a number of ways that the Legion cannot win this day. You can use your high understanding of economics and infrastructure to make him understand that Legion supply lines could not carry a campaign west, and that the NCRs weakness is their greatest strength. You can remind him of history, that the Malpais Legate failed because of the same reasons Lanius was about to fail. The Legions infrastructure can be criticized against him, causing him to fall back to defend his own position within the Legion. If all that fails, if you're honorable you can challenge him to one-on-one combat, making the fight against him slightly easier. If nothing comes together you fight him and several elite Legion soldiers, proving that he truly is the Monster of the East by being fast as a Cazador, hitting like a Deathclaw, all with the tactical mind a Legate needs.

I think I remember convincing him he’s taking the dam so easily because the NCR want to get the majority of his forces inside and slaughter them whilst they’re trapped in the NCRs concrete walls, the most dangerous animal being a desperate one, but now I’m not sure if I just made that up or not.
I think it’s because I kept Ulysses from lonesome road alive, and asked him how he would beat lanais, so he said to make him think the NCR is more capable than he thought, using his fear of failure to delay his victory.

Courier is just a man, lone wolf in vast wasteland filled with many people like him. but what make him difference from other? his determination give him strength to kill his 'killer' in his own home, his persistent give him endurance to survive in wasteland chaose, his understanding,perception and intelligence let him to befriend with many important people from various factions by him solving their problem, and lastly but not the least that his experience giving him actual skill and strength to kill his enemies.
the thing he does are not something exceptionally rare but usually it's done by a group of people or community but him doing it alone as a lone wolf proving himself to lanius that he is indeed an equal to him in terms of survival of fittest. the double headshot making courier 6 stronger instead of killing him is what lanius see as courier 6's catalyst
Given how hard Legion had been spanking NCR ever since First Battle, and how courier is the only person that managed to undo all that, yes one can get an idea why Lanius would think that way.

I'm amazed Lanius could even be talked down at all. Everything you hear about him makes him seem like a dumb angry brute, especially when compared to the pragmatic and level-headed Graham. Yet, when the truth is staring him in the face, he accepts it, swallows his pride, and moves on. It reminds me of the conversations you have with Saren in the first Mass Effect. Top notch writing.
Lanius is never implied to be dumb, just incredibly ruthless and cruel.

I always assumed that it was a deliberate play by Caesar to spread stories about Lanius as a blood thirsty savage in order to scare the NCR and weaken their morall. And in reality as we can see here Lanius is actually a pretty intelligent and well spoken person.
Lanius has an intelligence stat of 6 so is definitely not just a dumb brute

I normally don't hold with these cliche 'Survival of the fittest' lines, but boy did that sound badass.
He must think of you as a total badass, two shots to the head couldnt stop you, the glory of fighting you would be one of great honor but i love how he comments it would be a great battle indeed if the entire west was like you imagine an army of folks who bullets to the head didnt kill bet he wouldn't be able to contain his thrill at the idea of fighting such an army if he saw it.
I'll be honest.. it did the same to me. I don't do survival of the fittest but there's something about being determined and strong enough to awaken power in the midst of adversity and chaos
It's a great piece of dialogue because it shows that you prove Lanius right by defeating him. It's the challenges and the mortal situations that the Courier has to go through that make him strong enough to win the battle of Hoover Damn, be it with words or with power. "If the West is one day filled with the ones such as you", as in - if the West becomes strong as the East became strong. Would stability, peace or comfort make you experienced enough to stand up to Lanius on that faithful day? In this moment, you are closer to Lanius than to any NCR general or Vegas banker. It's brilliant.

I think most people that bring up the "Survival of the fittest" don't actually know what that means and therefore don't really believe in it.
But Lanius does. And that's why his words carry more weight, because, argue whether he's right or wrong, he has integrity. He stands by his words, and it is through this that you can convince him that retreat is better, because the Legion is not fit enough to survive trying to hold all of the west AND the east.

a nice detail: succeeding the speech checks doesn't simply convince him instantly, it just means that the conversation doesn't devolve into violence right there
you, the player, have to actually think like legate, talk to him as an equal, and actually use real arguments to convince him to leave without violence
and even after he"s convinced, saying the wrong thing can start up the boss fight anyway
the best rpgs aren't just numbers and killing things, they have good writing to go with it, and new vegas' writing is top notch

Far Harbor in Fallout 4 did something similar. When you're trying to convince the Far Harbor people to not massacre the Robot/Synth Colony it's not enough to have max speech/charisma, you had to do all the sidequests to get the individual people on your side first.

I did a speech build on my first run. I only killed like 250 things in total, it’s surprising the amount you can do as a diplomat.
Some things to remember if you do end up doing a speech build:
Don't forget that you have to solve some things yourself
Don't dump everything in Charisma: make it 1, tag barter and speech, and use the SPECIAL points somewhere else
If you want a pacifist build, one of the many things you'll need it terrifying presence

Second of all, the first thing to learn about Lanius is that he's all about honor, even in this Encounter after you convince him, if you pick the dialogue option "So, You'll Retreat?" He immediately gets defensive, and goes hostile instantly, which reinforces the idea of him being all about honor, because he sees Retreating as cowardice and he ordered the death of his tribe because they surrendered and lanius saw that as cowardice, and asked Caesar to kill his tribe, Because he's all About HONOR, yeah he's a warrior but he's not stupid.
And who or what told you that he decides to quit the attack on The Mojave?, all you do is Delay the inevitable not stop it.
Also, it could be extremely possible that Caesar said all that the prop up Lanius as "The Monster of the East" and whatnot, because at this point you didn't join The legion yet and Caesar wants to remind you(Their potential enemy) who you're facing against, and it could also be possible that Caesar is lying to you about Lanius not caring about the Legion and is only loyal to him to make it seem like you can't provoke him by killing Legionaires, and even IF that's true, Lanius still has to care about the Legion because Caesar is the Leader and Lanius is loyal to him, it all could be a lie to prop up lanius With Caesar same with his hegelian dialectics.

Fun Fact: Caesar build his legion based off of Roman Empire knowing it would eventually fail due to growing to large and not being able to control everything. This conversation with Lanius pretty much brings up that problem. If you take the west you will not be able to control the east. Making him realize this he backs down his troops and does not repeat the history that Roman Empire Caesar and (Legion) Caesar pretty much did. Pretty deep meaning if you ask me. Lesson: those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Actually, when talking to Caesar, he points out that he's trying to stop his conquest for a bit at New Vegas by renaming it his capital and stabilizing things to make a legitimate nation. However, he doesn't state how he will do this, so this can be taken as nothing more than wishful thinking on his part.

+Dennis M That's interesting, because I managed to bring peace to Freeside, Boulder City, Red Rock Canyon, Primm, the Strip, the Brotherhood, the Enclave remnants, Repconn, Jacobstown, Zion, Big MT, and the Divide, I helped my companions develop as characters, and I ended the entire main conflict peacefully with my speech skill in New Vegas. That's excluding all the other skill and perk checks both in and out of dialogue that brought peaceful solutions to quest, bypassed certain parts of quests, or net me more info, more money, or better rewards from npcs. I could also use all these skills and perks to cause even more chaos instead of peace.

Well technically you're not required to engage the Powder Gangers. You could skip Primm entirely, getting the information about Benny elsewhere, or just showing up at the Tops without any prompting.
Or if you're a sneaking oriented character, you could slip in, get the information you want out of the captured deputy, and leave the town to rot.
Hell if you're an NCR guy, you can just ignore Benny's whole plot, and work with them the rest of the game.

I like to think canonically this speech changes how Legate Lanius handles leading when Caesar dies, at least when handling war.
Funny enough this speech may be one of the most dangerous endings for NCR, especially if what you say is true.
Instead of this savage but smart military leader continuing to smash his forces against the dam and eventually dying, weakening the legion as leaving its leadership uncertain, he saves his remaining forces and develops and stabilizes the legion internally, with a core loyal force to ensure compliance even if he was defeated at the dam
A legion victory is a loss to NCR for sure, but the long 15 is just as much, if not more of a choke point as the dam, and far longer. Mojave airport itself would likely hold out for some time, and the legion would bleed.
Independent Or House Vegas is far from ideal from the NCR's perspective, but either is a buffer zone against the remaining legion and a trading partner, once they pull themselves together about the defeat. It's arguably even less able to invade NCR in ether route, and in terms of expansion theres nothing stopping NCR from spreading north into Washington and South into Mexico instead of east.
Outright annexation is their ideal, of course, allowing them to fortify the dam and even the east side of the Colorado, putting an end to raids, as the legion likely collapses into infighting after not only Cesar but his second in command and at least a few other higher ups all are died or disgraced along with its greatest forces.
@@Joesolo13 With House or Independent, some of your actions end up benefitting the NCR anyways, like them investigating and reinforcing their trading if you give the evidence during Cass' personal quest or letting Chief Hanalan off the hook as he then returns to become a popular senator protesting against Kimball and Oliver. With the defeat Kimball's thrown out and replaced with a more competent president if I recall correctly. For me personally I see House as the ending that benefits all three as he has a legitimate plan for the Mojave, Lanius can reinforce the Legion better than Caesar ever did, and the NCR can focus better on the home front.
@@BlazinVoid59 Mr. House's ending with very good karma is the best imo, it stops the expansionism of the ncr and the legion, while humanity will benefit of house's intelligence and the empathy of the courier, i said empathy because in one of the ending's slides it says that the courier makes sure that Mr. House doesn't do anything that degrades humanity, like being corrupt for example, so the courier makes sure that he stays on the right path, one thing people seem to forget is that The courrier works with Mr. House and for him, simply because House knows he could get killed anytime by him.

It's crazy how Lanius almost seems like a better leader than Caesar he's willing to give up the Mojave campaign because he recognises that it would overextend the legion and lead it to its death. Meanwhile Ceasar is obsseded with the idea of conquering Hoover dam because he's obsseded with emulating the real Julius Caesar. And in his drive to satiate his own ego Caesar will probably just overextend the legion
Caesar is a visionary, driven to great things by dreams of conquest and power. But Lanius is a warrior and conqueror of a simpler sort, which means he’s given to more practical thinking about his objectives and the opposition he faces.
To Caesar, the Dam was the Rubicon, his everything, and Vegas the gemstone to set in his new crown, the NCR his ideological rivals. To Lanius? The Dam is another fortified position, Vegas another city to burn, NCR another tribe to conquer. Why rush things? He isn’t dying of a brain tumour.
The Courier can end a whole war and spare hundreds of thousands of lives using only his inhumanly persuasive skills. A golden tongue, an unshakable frame, and willpower of steel: those were the weapons who impended a huge war with no blood spill.
How truly amazing.

Funny enough, for a while I always thought about how this speech was sort of pulled out of the ass of the Courier for a speech check alone. It felt like logistics alone wouldn't have convinced Lanius, only loyal to Caesar, and that a mere stranger from his perspective would've done nothing to dampen his momentum. But in the Lonesome Road, when you talk to Ulysses at the end as he overlooks the Divide, it made sense where The Courier got this from.
Ulysses tells that Lanius has his strength and weakness are the same - in his title. Putting the fear of losing and damaging his image would stop him cold. Ulysses also says to remind him of past failures in reference to Graham's attack of the Dam would pause him like nothing else, in fear of removing his legendary status.
You can see this subtlety laid in the dialogue. This especially holds true if you bring up Graham's failure as a bluff too, but even without, I can see why this shakes Lanius. The Speech check is entirely in convincing that this battle would destroy what he represents: an undefeated conqueror. Once Lanius' momentum is paused cold by this, and the fear of losing worms into him with the history of Hoover Dam and the campaign of the East, only then does the logistics and attrition become justification to leave. It wouldn't have been without the essential touch of his reputation at stake.
That's why this isn't an Intelligence check, its Speech alone. The outcome was obvious, anyone with intelligence including Lanius would see it, but the only way to make Lanius care was piercing his status. *That's* some brilliant writing.
He's probably one of the best voiced NPC's in all of fallout :o

I agree with the 'on-rails' criticism part.
But you know what I don't miss? Underdeveloped, flawed partner mechanics. I remember more than one instance where I wasn't allowed into Caesar's tent because of my alleged 'companion', even though they weren't even there at the time. I then had to track them down just to say 'stay'.
Not to mention the fact that Fallout 4 had the most straightforward perk system and fixed VATs.
New Vegas endings:
House: You helped the only person with a plan for humanity. You might see yourself as a hero for that but House isn't perfect. His "gifts" were ways he can use to spy on settlements and while he has a plan, he doesn't view people as people, just customers that'll buy his products and he'll wipe out any and all threats to his "rule".
Legion: you helped a brutal regime rise to power. They enslave and torture but they brought civilization to the wasteland. For all the bad they do, you helped bring a sense of order to the Mojave.
NCR: you helped the "good guys" but unlike House they have no plans for humanity's future other than just holding their land. And unlike Legion, nothing really changes for the better as raiders and the fiends are still out there.
Independent: you helped a region gain independence from two warring factions. The people who live there love you for it, even removing House is something everyone appreciates. The "best ending" but you made the same mistake as House, relying on a single person (in your case a robot). Everyone says what you did was for the best but they don't know the robot in charge of House's securitrons and tech is a robot that literally cannot say no. Until he reveals that he's downloading a program left by House. One that'll make him more assertive. You now left the fate of New Vegas in the hands of a robot you know nothing about, one that'll stop obeying you eventually.
Fallout 4 endings:
Minutemen: you're the good guy, loved by all.
Railroad: you're the good guy but no one knows what you did.
Brotherhood: you're a good guy along with the other soldiers.
Institute: you're a good guy even if people don't understand.
Actually I believe it’s confirmed that the “assertive” personality is just Yes Man making it so no one but you can order him around. So no one can just waltz in and steal Yes Man from you essentially

@@damsen978 Using this engine cut down dramatically on the development time since they were able to reuse assets from Fallout 3 and basically the entire gameplay mechanics and functions. I doubt it would have been possible to create New Vegas in the same timespan in a different engine, since they would to basically build all those assets and mechanics from the ground up, which would have probably taken 1 year of development alone without even working on content, like quests.

One of the greatest written dialogue segments in the entire franchise, which is no easy feat when we consider things like one or two of Joshua Graham's monologues.
Brilliant writers behind New Vegas, and that's one reason why it has a stronger legacy than any other Fallout game.
How is this great writing? It's a lot of pretentious dragged out conversations that come down to "The West is too big".
@@ShadowSonic2 In this context yes, but If you play lonsome road before you reach the dam it all makes senses, Ulysses was supposed to be in the base game and he was the companion that sympathize with the legion, this whole conversation was made with that in mind since Ulysses most likely would have used the same conversations and dialogues in the base game
In the end, it’s not “the West is big” is more, “and what are you but a puppet of your own desire for blood” after listening to Ulysses, all makes sense

@@ShadowSonic2 What Chech said, but if you compare it to say.. Game of Thrones season 8, the difference is night and day. The writing in shit like that is the opposite of thought-provoking and the wording is about as subtle as a sledgehammer through a door.
Also the fact that you can have such a conversation and talk down someone who has the reputation of a mindless brute of a man is one great aspect of this sequence.

I love the parallel to history here.. After the Western Roman Empire fell, Emperor Justinian of the Eastern part sent Belisarius, one of the greatest generals to ever live, to retake the west.
Despite being vastly outnumbered, Belisarius did the unthinkable. He not only retook Rome, but held it against a massive siege.
But, the Persians attacked he East. Belisarius was recalled. The Roman Empire would never be whole again, and the East was now weakened.

Music in games developed or produced by Bethesda is typically stellar. In fact, it's probably the one thing I would say they haven't managed to screw up over time.

Manek Iridius I mean I like my games to have meaning and not just be rooty tooty shooty. Especially RPGs were the story and dialogue make up part of the experience of playing in a fantasy world
@@redazthegreat5518 Yeah, especially in FO 1 and 2, reading was easily half the game time and it was worth it because the writing was irreverent, thought-provoking, unsettling and disturbing, or just downright fucking funny. New dialogue was generally one of the motivating rewards for exploration, and it was worth it most of the time.
Also, having more fleshed out dialogue is not a bad thing in an RPG. Play something like say, Divinity OS2 (as an example of a VERY verbose, modern RPG where you can play as a faceless RPG hero), and while most of the written and spoken lines are for NPCs, most of the player options have a fair bit of character or wit to them. It works and doesn't bother immersion since it's well-written and thematically consistent, and the options tend to follow the archetypical RPG flavors of "Eager," "Reluctant," "Distrustful," "Curious," "Comic Relief," etc.
I'm honestly not very impressed with this cutscene and dialogue tree overall (it's a pretty ham-fisted and abrupt argument for such a critical situation, on both sides), but it's at least aiming in the right direction by just being there.
@Manek Iridius rpg doesnt mean you can be whatever you want, it means you play a fucking role, if it defined loose or tight should depend on the story and the worldbuilding. Of course you can say skyrim is a bad rpg because you cant play the role of a world war 2 veteran but yeah...

For all its technical flaws, I will always feel the depth of the faction relationships, the extremely strong writing and unique atmosphere gives New Vegas a charm I will always appreciate

Vaas Montenegro Genghis Khan was a badass indeed, and like Lanius, he had been through a lot of shit before he became a powerful warlord. But he never told me the definition of insanity.
One time I uppercutted Lanius so hard his limbs stayed in place while his torso rocketed off beyond the stars.

I love how outrageous Lanius’s ideals seem until he ultimately proves them by that one amazing beautiful line about the 2 bullet marks. The courier was just that, a courier. They weren’t anybody special. Strength and battle is what gave the courier the opportunity to rise. I love obsidian dude imagine if they simply had more time to work on this game.
This game is Obsidian’s Mangum Opus. The slight change in music when he says that line is perfect. And like you said, in this instance it’s irrefutable. Violence changed the Courier and the Mojave in general, forever.
