  • Welding repair is actually pretty simple. Whether you like the option or not, it definitely minimizes downtime on your own machine if you have the option to repair it yourself. Here is a quick guide about swapping out a board on an Everlast PowerTIG 210EXT.

    Great video for more than just welders! If you take some care with the anti-static treatment, connector force, letting things discharge, etc.. and your gear can be up faster, without spending time and money shipping.
    Using my camera to take disassembly pix has saved me; great comment about marking connectors. The "if you think it should come loose, you've missed a fastener" advice is *so* important. Easy to miss things like that on well-designed systems. Watch for pinched wires on chassis assembly too, btw.

    I just spoke with Everlast Technical Support and they had me run through a power output check. It checked out and so they diagnosed my welder’s problem as needing a new top board. They had me take a picture of that board and email it to them. A replacement board is on its way. Your video on swapping the two was excellent and very helpful. Like you, I don’t want me welder in a shop for weeks as they said they needed to get their hands on an Everlast electrical diagram manual before they could even begin working on it. I imagined I would see that welder months later so I chose to just do it myself...thanks to your help. Thank you for taking the time to video this swap out and go over everything very well! Cheers mate.

    Nice video. I've owned and used my 210EXT for about 3-1/2 years, and still dig it. But it's good to see the relative ease of component swaps that Everlast will sometimes offer to their handier customers, even though it's not part of their explicit 5 year warrantee. Rock On Everlast, and Fabrication Series!

    Suggestion: It's a good idea to make sure you're grounded when handling boards. A static electricity discharge will ruin your day otherwise. Some electronics is more susceptible than other types but nearly all boards these days will contain elements that are.

    • @FranconiaFriend
      @FranconiaFriend 6 лет назад +2

      Also, really sensitive parts should not be in regular bubble wrap - or any other static friendly material. But probably EL shipped it that way, so probably not that sensitive.

    • @1990notch
      @1990notch 5 лет назад +1

      It's mostly CMOS chips that are that sensitive. CMOS are usually used when power saving is important, so probably not as likely they are in a welder as say a cell phone or laptop.

    The part I don't like is that you don't necessarily get YOUR welder back. A friend sent his for repairs and got a different welder, same model but not the one he sent. I treat my machines well and are kept in an air conditioned space. You don't know how somebody else's machine has been stored or kept or how hard it has been used/abused.

    Good video Justin I agree 💯 with taking pictures. I used to do it all the time at my last job working on classic cars taking a dash out or even something with a bunch of nuts and bolts. Because it better to have that back of picture that took 1 minute to take compared to all the time and frustration or guessing it’s just peace of mind in case you forget how something went and just makes things easier putting back together. Great video. Question I have the same 210ext love it but I get really erratic arc starts sputtering on tig on all materials even if I set the start amps up it still does it and I checked all my fittings and hoses no air leaks at all . Also on my 4th bottle of argon so I don’t think it would be gas but possibly could be I’m gonna try another gas supplier next time just in case . But here’s the thing if I set the pre flow to minimum 1 I’ll get a smoother arc and it’s ok but pre flow has to be at least 1 second not .8sec. Any help appreciated it’s driving me crazy because the machine is less than a year old and always did the bad arc starts like that. My be best to contact everlast costumer service. Thanks again 🙏🍻👊🏻

      @@quartfeira It is kind of a lottery since they outsource a lot. They do not always refresh their product lines uniformly. Their US based staff are not large in number. I can say from chats with the owner and some staff via media that the overall quality of their mid-high end boxes has improved drastically over the last 5 years.
      If you look at just the interface changes alone with the recent 275 lightning and the storm 215 versus the old boxes that's a big shift. Internally they have changed/ improved a lot too. Each time it’s blown two out of the three black SCR looking things on the power supply board (vertical board on left side viewed from the front of unit). The dealer has been good to work with but the hassle and wait for parts definitely eats into your warranty time, it’s a good thing it’s 5 years. I’m dreading when this welder is out of warranty and repairs will on be on me...there’s gotta be a design fault with the 210 EXT power board, underrated components, poor design or something.

    I hope my EL tig 250 ex doesn't take this dump on me. I went through this on my powcon 20 years ago, it was a breeze, fired right up. I have computer repair experience so the intimidating part was low for me. These inverter machines are as delicate as a PC. Just look at that board, it's a PC board. I've found that you keep the machine as dust free as possible, religiously cover it when not in use and keep it in a "high and dry" place while in use. Humid ambient air is enough to start microscopic corrosion on a dusty PC board. I keep my machine in an air tight plastic dewalt rolling trunk when not in use. Ive had computers and RC transmitters die on me became of leaving them too close to an open window for an extended period of time. The electronics looked fine to the naked eye, but after inspecting under a microscope, I saw a forrest of verdigris (green oxidation) on all the solder points, thats the beginning of the end for electronics. Just a metallic dusty environment is enough to start microscopic corrosion on the electronics. Cover the welder while grinding and actively vent that dust out of the area with a good fan.

    • @everlastgenerator

      These boards have a fairly good conformal coating and aren't just bare. But they are designed to withstand HF and metal dust to an extent.

      I'm curious who's actually putting together the circuit boards. I would hope that they have better components on the board. In reality if Everlast is supporting the components for their products then it doesn't seem too different from the American offerings of which maybe your welding repair facility has some parts in stock. There are also replacement boards available for the more common Chinese welders but for the most part it seems Americans don't buy those Riland style machines. It seems as far as support certain Lincoln models and most Millers are really great machines to own. Since I will never make money on the machine and it will probably go months without use at a time I don't really mind having something disposable that is much more a roll of the dice. Pedal control also seems to be kind of a more American option. Each person has to find their own value and decide on the pros and cons of each. I have a lot of friends that are mechanics first and fabricators a distant second that use the green machines and none have ever had issues. I've read some stuff online though that Everlast isn't necessarily the most fun company to deal with but that's just reading disgruntled people's statements so who knows? This is my first time having a decent look at the circuit board and the PCB is just very organized and straight unlike many of the Chinese welders that I've seen. Granite being ugly doesn't mean it's bad but being clean does lead me to believe there was a little bit more thought and organization put into the design. I enjoy digging around in Eastern European, Russian, and Southeast Asian forums to see the markets that the Chinese machines actually have a sizeable share. AC TIG being such a premium feature it's sometimes hard to get information. Well this turned into a bit of a rant. Back to trying to get schematics of an Italian made Lincoln good luck in your machine search.

      Ciao, scusa il disturbo, alla fine cosa hai scelto? Mi pare che questa everlast abbia facilmente problemi... Stavo guardando le Parweld, c'è poco in giro come opinioni per poter valutare, ero orientato su quella marca finché non ho scoperto l'everlast finché ecco, mi appare questo video.. i commenti non sono di certo confortanti ed ho pure contattato Justin su Instagram, sai che mi ha detto? Che le sue everlast sono morte un paio di anni fa e che non le usa più... Sapresti dirmi qualcosa? Consigli? 😊✌️

    Why after only a year , did the board crap out? Is that the norm for an everlast?

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  6 лет назад +1

      It just lost a couple channels. I wouldn't call it normal since its the first time I had an issue. It still worked on one channel all day no problem...

      It's a super affordable welder. The fact that you can get the board to fix it is cool by its self. When some of the cheaper welders have a problem, you can't get parts so you have to get another your self another welder. I'm not saying a everlast will last for ever but if it lasts 2 or 3 years and helps you become better at welding or make some money, it was worth it.

    this is great i didnt know they had this option, saves alot of down time and makes sure youre not stuck paying shipping costs to fix a brand new machine, what was the process prior to the board being shipped did you just call up and explain the issue and they knew the problem and took your info sent the replacement out free of charge, do they charge shipping or their costs for the part, what info do you need to prove your warranty ect
    i have an esab right now, not impressed with their warranty work at all they wont deal with me at all once i figure out the issue and talk to them and they agree to warranty it they tell me to take it to my local welding shop and then the guy there has to call and jump thru the same hoops and then they send him the part and the welding shop guy always seems busy and judgemental, then im bugging him for 2 weeks waiting for the part to arrive (happened to be the mig gun) then i need to go pick it up and the shops only open 9-5 weekdays which doesnt work well for me... why they couldnt just take me serial number see when the machine was sold to confirm its in warranty (even though all of my models are still in warranty as they havent been in production that long) and send the part or whatever directly to me

      We've tried to make our machines with a "componentized" modular design. It reduces repair times in house, and for the customer if he/she is equipped to do so.

      P.s. He doesn't cover the reason for the pcb change, what cause it! :( A possible weak point? Idw to buy a 2000+ machine and have it broken ~1 year later, though 5years garanty is ok, but the time, nerves and the shipping costs..... big no no. Do Everlast have an EU office? I'm highly interested in buying one of their machines ... or two!

Weve been around since 2004 and have been mfg since 2008 in our facility, and constitute 80 of its production and also have invested heavily in the factory. Rtech and others benefit heavily from our investment, technology and expertise... The truth is that We spend heavily there in r and d and offer new product both that seeps down to them in altered forms and becomes available to them as well. We manufacture to higher specs (etl/ul) use superior parts and have many models currently in development even now. And rtech sources from several manufacturers for their line. We do not and use just one. We have around 50 ,models. Rtech does not. Our distribution is on 6 continents. R tech is primarily in Britain. Now, consider the facts and logic. Oh and we supervise manufacture on our lines personally and have institued our own qc. Processes

    Scariest thing about this video is that youd have to do this at some point IN THE FIRST PLACE! ...that along w customer service reviews people say they treat youblike dirt, lke an idiot, takes weeks if not months to get your welder back up and running etc
    TBH Im totally scared to buy an everlast machine and IF (and if) only half fof the bad reviews I read are true then I know why these machines are nicknamed NEVERLAST.

      The unit self drains capacitors within 5 to 10 minutes, but good point.

    It's a little concerning to see a bare PCBA wrapped in and resting on non dissipative bubble wrap. That stuff can generate some serious ESD voltages. I sure hope it didn't come from the manufacturer like that.

    • @Matt-bt7ej
      @Matt-bt7ej 6 лет назад +2

      Sure, I understand what you are saying and guess that you have designed to cope with Pollution Degree 4 with I assume the use of a conformal coating. But your exposed IO may still be subjected to life reduction by high ESD from within your packaging. I have only seen this a handful of times with products I have been involved in the design and certification of but it still happens. Granted the RMA level due to this may be in the noise of your return statistics.
      I'd still recommend any of my customers spend the few pence on an ESD bag to ship their product in as a fairly low cost insurance policy.

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  6 лет назад +6

      I'm not sure if replying to this will help you, but it probably will help others. The DIY board replacement is an *option*. The other option is to send it out for warranty just like any other company. It's all completely covered just like any other company.
      The country of origin is completely irrelevant to the available warranty options and policies. If you want to get very technical, many big name welding machines are manufactured in China. Even the favorite blue and red boxes are manufactured out of the country. The Everlast warranty is longer and includes more options for being manufactured in the same place. I hope that helps you clear your head about the difference between warranty policies and countries of origin.
