The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) - "Forth Eorlingas" scene

- Опубликовано: 23 сен 2024
- The Rohirrim sometimes referred to themselves as Eorlingas, and this was the battle-cry that King Theoden shouted as he rode out of the Hornburg at Helm's Deep, to meet the Uruk-hai head-on just before Gandalf arrived with reinforcements, "at first light, on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the east."
This is one of the first scenes that springs to mind when I think about the many perfect movie moments in the LOTR trilogy. Everything is done sublimely, especially Howard Shore's score. The scene starts with the Nature theme as the sun rises. As they ride out, a triumphant statement of the Rohan theme accompanies them, and then they look east and see Gandalf, as the choir announces 'Shadowfax', before a warm and welcome rendition of the Fellowship theme. Soloist Ben del Maestro then sings a version of the Mearas text (about Shadowfax), as the Rohirrim sweep down the mountain with Gandalf leading them, before the final blast of the 'Gandalf the White' theme as they charge the Uruk-hai. If there is a more perfectly scored sequence in recent film history, I have yet to see it.
Starring Ian McKellan, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, Bernard Hill and John Rhys-Davies. Directed by Peter Jackson, written by JRR Tolkien, and with one of the best film scores of all time composed by Howard Shore.
"A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early; he arrives precisely when he means to."
Ooooh. Nice!
THIS.
This makes so much more sense as an adult as it did as a child.
LOTR is a perfect puzzle, it's amazing
Explain that to all the dead men and elves from the battle
This is one of those scenes that you can watch thousands of times and will always give me the chills.
Can't watch without tears even.
Yup
Angeluss Blade Same here. Must be something rooted very deeply in our collective psyche as humans. Something that kept us going whatever the odds.
Over and over and over. This and the Roharin charge
You're absolutely right! My favourite scene ever!
Man, LOTR came at a perfect time where CGI was used to ENHANCE a film, but not CARRY a film like they try time and again today, but fail.
Right, i’m so glad they only got the chance to ruin The Hobbit and not the entire LOTR franchise
@@SugarPeachPrincess I enjoyed the Hobbit thoroughly
I recently rewatched the Hobbit, and while there's quite a few things I don't like about it and it's nothing compared to the absolute masterpiece that is LotR, it's actually a really fun set of movies to watch. It absolutely does not deserve the hate it gets.
@@NS-xo6qe It wouldn't get nearly the amount of hate it gets if Peter Jackson was not at the helm. We KNOW what he can create in the universe, so giving us.......that.........was just a slap in the face.
Hard work will be rewarded vs. just using CGI to carry everything
It's not a coincidence that two of the most memorable lines/speeches of the entire trilogy are delivered by King Theoden. Bernard Hill is a brilliant actor.
He's also the only actor who's been on two of the most awarded films of all time: LotR and Titanic.

Eomer is probably the most unsung badass of this series.
So true, but we will always have this scene and the one with the mumakil. Honestly, I'm just happy that at least ONE of my favourite characters didn't have his moment of greatness butchered. Faramir trying to take the ring still makes my eye twitch, same with warmonger Thranduil in the hobbit movies. Still, the movies are overall so awesome that it's easy to overlook some flaws.

Theoden has the best pre-charge speeches
Damn straight... I, to this day, wait for possibility of using "Fell deeds awake..." as a conversation starter...
For now i only could use "Looks like meat is back on the menu, boys!"(my mom finally decided to make that chicken in the oven, with beer), "The age of men is over. The time of the Orc has come"(when talking to femminists) and "They have a cave troll..."(that one was when my younger brother came to visit with his wife and he put... "some" weight since i last saw him)
Well, he has been a King and a leader longer than Aragorn. He may be younger than him, but Aragorn spent most time in exile or fighting under someone else's colors.

Rest in peace Bernard Hill. One of the most memorable moments in all of movie history. The sun will always rise no matter how dark in each of our lives and we shall look out for it. Yes...we shall draw swords and courage as we ride out together for each other, our people. Let the horn sound in the deep one last time for Bernard Hill, for he does not stand alone. To the King!
“Let this be the hour when we draw swords together. Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath, now for ruin, and the red dawn. Forth, Eorlingas!”- Bernard Hill, Theoden King.

"Not alone."
The most powerful line in the entire series.
Followed by one of the most powerul scenes in the series, "To the king!"
Only rivaled by the charge of the Rohirrim in Return of the King, which says a lot about a movie trilogy that came out almost 20 years ago now! They didn't make movies like Lord of the Rings before or AFTER.
I hope that, should the theaters be open again next year, they'll show the trilogy in theaters to celebrate 20 years. I want to experience the thrills again that I felt when I was 11, 12, and 13.

the sun rises over the hill at the exact moment and I cry every time. That's what the magic is in Middle Earth, no fireballs, but the pieces fall into place and the whole universe joins your side right when you need it

No. You ride to die, but on this day, you have been spared, and have fought with honor
For me, it's the music. I get teary eyed every time I hear it. Just freaking beautiful.
thats lukácsian shit :D
The sun of middle earth is actually the last fruit of Laurelin, one of the two trees of Valinor which got destroyed by Melkor. And this heavenly fruit is in a vessel which is guided by a Maia (angel) of Valar (God) named Arien across the sky. So I like to think that at this scene it was Arien that came to help and protect them from evil.🤍😊🌞
I think the most beautiful thing about this scene is that Eomer and his company were previously exiled by Theoden- kicked out of their homes. Still, Eomer was loyal to his king, bringing his company to save Theoden in his time of need. The level of loyalty is insane. After LotR, Eomer became king of Rohan, and wherever Aragorn took Gondorian troops into battle, Eomer was right there with him. Eomer and Faramir are of the highest quality.
Amen.
A chance for captain faramir of gondor to show his quality?

@@Sikkeskatona Endgame would beg to differ... Still, Helm's Deep has my heart
I balled my eyes out!
Jennifer Ariesta Engames final battle wasn’t that good though. It just felt like a little kids smashed his toys together Untill the good guys won. This battle had ups and downs and phases. For example there’s times in the battle in this movie where you said the bad guys blew up the wall it’s over. Then you see Aragon charge with his men to defend the wall so you get a sense of hope. Endgame had none of this and just was visually appealing in my opinion. There wasn’t a time in endgames battle where it seemed the good guys would lose. There were no stakes.
Thats why this scene in lord of the rings was epic. There was no hope Untill they remembered Gandalf’s words. Then you see Gandalf arrive with Rohan and it just brings the best exhilarating reaction especially the first time you see the battle. But still you can see this battle over and over without getting bored.
Part of engames problem is that some heroes were over powered. Like captain marvel. She’s so overpowered that you know she’ll win all her fights. So as a viewer you don’t worry about her.
Also there were scenes in endgame where a hero would randomly show up to help or save another making it seem lazy, adding to the feeling that it was like a kid playing with toys. In lord of the rings when a character saves another at least you had a sense of direction. You knew the general location of each character and where they were positioned to defend helms deep so when a character saved another in there location it didn’t feel lazy because the character was there to begin with
Now I would admit it was cool Seeing all the heroes together in endgame. It was cool to hear Sam say on your left and then everyone arrive like in this scene. But the epicness felt all thrown away once the final battle started because of the reasons I listed above. A wasted potential. The endgame final battle could have been revolutionary, and amazing. Now no one seems to care about it. The Endgame battle could have been talked about for years to come by fans and non fans alike. But no, the Russo Brothers said, let’s just wrap up the franchise by smashing everyone together and being lazy.
Jonathan M well that’s just your opinion though. Still doesnt change my mind that both are utterly amazing
"Not alone. Rohirrim!"
Still makes me cry.
"TO THE KING!"
Part also gave me goosebumps.

I like how they were waiting behind the edge of the hill so they can show up epically once Eomer called them
Definitely had to rewatch it like twice
The Rohirrim charging to the aid of the king is epic. But the detail I absolutely love is that Shadowfax is leading the charge ahead of the herd. He is the lord of all horses, and the horses are following him into battle just as much as Gandalf is leading the men who ride them. Thats why I love this visual at 2:37. There's two commanders here in white, not just one.
Also, it took 3 days for Gandalf to be there all because of looking for Eomer's lost sword
An excellent observation.

This is the scene which made The Two Towers my favourite film of the trilogy.
“Aragorn looked at the pale stars, and at the moon, now sloping behind the western hills that enclosed the valley. 'This is a night as long as years', he said. 'How long will the day tarry?'
'Dawn is not far off', said Gamling, who had now climbed up beside him. 'But dawn will not help us, I fear'
'Yet dawn is ever the hope of men', said Aragorn.”

We spent hours talking about the things I couldn’t understand yet. When I was 10, Fellowship came out and we saw it opening night and I remember coming out of it asking him if he liked it, he proceeded to say how much he loved it, how much it was like how he pictured it in his head as a kid. We watched all of them opening day. He passed before we could go see Battle Of Five Armies but I went myself silently crying the entire time because that was ours. Anjay Ranjan music will make or break a movie.
Exactly. I loved what Hans Zimmer and J.N.Howard did with the score for the Dark Knight Trilogy. I think that could go toe to toe with the LOTR score anyday.
Are you high?? Nothing Zimmer or Howard have created will ever come close to matching this. Howard Shore created literally dozens and dozens of iconic motifs and themes and played them out over ten hours (!) of film. This is a masterpiece, I kid you not, the likes of which the musical world hasn't seen in decades and you just compared it to the Dark Knight trilogy, a soundtrack that contains about 3 themes, at most, none of them particularly original or engaging? The Dark Knight is a masterpiece, not of composition, but of production and engineering. Musically though, it's really, really not great. So no, the Dark Knight trilogy soundtrack could NOT go toe to toe with this. It's ridiculously simple and dull in comparison.
There's a reason why the LOTR soundtrack gets voted number one in practically every poll and the Dark Knight never makes the top 20 and there's a reason why this trilogy won 4 Oscars for its music while the Dark Knight trilogy won zero.
Completely agree. In my opinion LOTR is the greatest achievement in the history of film music. The only thing that comes even remotely close is Star Wars, but even that isn't on the level of complex thematic development and sheer scope presented in LOTR. I'm not sure anything will ever come close to Shore's masterpiece.
I think Shores' LotR-Trilogy and Williams' Original Star Wars-Trilogy both stand at the top of Film Scores. Definately the best Music Trilogies and indivdually all in the top-twenty of every Film Score ever composed.

20 years later and this scene still makes me feel inspired and ready to charge to the king. Amazing job by the cast and crew
Shadowfax leaping into the horde of Uruks is the most beautiful violence in the history of cinema in my opinion. Simply amazing.
yes
He's the lord of all horses. He knows when to jump over a spear.
@@yorkaturr And when and how to kick the stuffing out of the Orc holding it!
Well, Shadowfax was, after all, a direct descendant of Felaróf, the founder of the Méaras, Lords of horses. Felaróf himself was the beloved mount of Eorl, founder and first King of Rohan. Felaróf was a direct descendant of Nahar himself, the beloved mount of Oromë, of the Valar themselves. So Shadowfax had royal blood in him.
It is something to behold
Don't forget the truly majestical sound design for that horn. I still remember how that sounded/felt in the cinema all those years ago.
I envy you sir, I was a kid when this movie came out.., only manage to watch it on CD which are pirated back then. Of course, I bought the original blue Ray collection to compensate for that few years back. But to watch it in the cinema, must be one hell of an atmosphere
I remember seeing Return of the King with my father and brother at a midnight release, and all of us walking out of the theater in tears. My dad grew up reading the books, and he never ever cries, but I know this series definitely hit him deeper than most movies do. Really put into perspective how powerful these books were and makes me happy to have shared that moment with them.

Gandalf's Resonance: All ally units get increased Strenght, Speed, Defense and Dark Defense.
Enemy units get Blinded and Stunned while their critical strike chance decreases greatly.

There's a chance Dune might get there, but then that's the last of the "unfilmable" trilogies. Until someone else creates a masterpiece of similar scale, which they eventually will, but ones like this only come around once every generation or two
Can we talk about the discipline of those Uruks? Quickly shifting positions and forming a pike wall. Well done.
Yeahh. Still dark and they were like going on a party for destroying Theoden King and his empire. Gandalf arrives and they were like "shit".
And then the sun came up and they all fell out of position for several seconds.

This one is second to the shadowfax scene for me.
Same. This was THE scene of The Two Towers. Each film has that special scene and this was it for this film. It always brings tears to my eyes.
i think the way tolkien used magic in lotr was so fantastically well done like so subtle yet still gandalfs magic was always seen as something amazing, yet he never let it feel overpowered or overshadow any of the other characters or story, truely amazing
Cunningflop The funny thing is, I don't even think he used any magic. Remembering his famous words to Frodo; "A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to," and later to Aragorn; "Look to my coming at first light on the fifth day,". I think he timed his arrival perfectly to coincide with the sunrise since the light shines from behind them just as the sun begins to rise.
He did shoot lightning at the Balrog and cast a shield spell kind of thing and then used light to blind Nazgul but other than a handful of spells and like pushes with his staff against Saurumon there was only like spoken spells.
Haman Karn Yeah I remember those, I meant specifically that the sunlight blinding the Uruk-Hai was more down to timing than Gandalf using his powers.
Gandalf is a minor diety, being as he is a Maiar spirit, he wields the Ring of Fire Narya, and mentions being the 'wielder of the flame of Anor'. Anor is Sindarin for Sun. He is thus associated with Arien, the Maiar charged by the Valar with guiding the Sun across the sky.
There is every chance that he used his magic and/or his association with Arien to make the Sun rise when he arrived. Which I actualky find more likely than 2000 Rohirrim waiting for 40 minutes on the other side of that hill while Gandalf says "any minute now".
Tl;dr, I think this was actually Gandalf using his magic. Which would make sense, because his magic was always powerful but often subtle. Quite often it caused things that could be mistaken for hapoy accidents rather than acts of will by Gandalf.

Well at this point he'd given up all hope that his people could be saved, so he's like "well we might as well do this and go out with a bang and die fighting" and Aragon, who still has some hope, is like "nah, if this works we'll fight and live".
I agree completely. Theoden was inspired to die fighting, he had long since lost hope. Aragorn and Gimli's utterances may have given him a sliver of hope, even though he knew they had no chance. Of course when he sees Gandalf and Eomer, he knows he did the right thing and that the next natural thing to happen is for them to all go out fighting the Uruk-hai, win or lose. And it quickly becomes apparent that they will win, miraculously. Miracles can happen, people, but only if you're willing to fight for them.

@@ghostsade3 To be that guy: Theoden definitly was fatalistic at this point, but he didn't need help in deciding to attack in the books. It's just a little switch of dialogue by the movies, to make Aragorn be more important to the situation.

What. a. scene. Unbelievable.
This scene makes me tear up every time I watch it. This is the greatest trilogy that has ever, or will ever be made.
Everyone who worked on these films should be (and probably is) immensely proud of their accomplishment. This scene alone - even out of context - is unbelievably powerful and beautiful. Well done.
Agreed. You can find the website of the artist who came up with he design of the Balrog and he says to this day it is the design that he is the proudest of.
The way they composed it, that the music actually emphasizes Gandalfs magic... just masterfully crafted.
How is it possible to watch the same exact scene thousands of times and to get the same exact shivers every single time you watch the scene! Pure unparalleled cinematic brilliance! Thank you Peter Jackson for this eternal cinematic gift, and thank God for the existence of the cinematic art!
Theoden is the best character in the whole trilogy coz of Bernard's beautiful acting. I'm genuinely hurt by his passing 😢
"Yes... yes! The horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the Deep. One last time.
Let this be the hour that we draw swords together.
Now for wrath. Now for ruin. And a red dawn!
Forth Eorlingas!"
You forgot “fell deeds awake”
Gandalf had told Aragon that Theoden will need him in the end. And when Aragon said “ride out with me” you can see how Theoden’s courage is renewed. He is not going to fight to live but to go meet his ancestors in glory and bravery. It is such a goosebump moment the whole convo between them. And when Theoden sees Eomer he feels happy and relieved. I love how much they love each other uncle and nephew (and now heir to Rohan)
@crazyandfashionable another thing I really enjoy about this scene, is yes gandalf told them look on the fifth day etc. But none of them actually knew if gandalf would be able to make it. So this is all essentially based on hope and makes it even more beautiful honestly for me.

So many GoT comments under LotR videos 😂 I was a massive fan of that show for the first three seasons, then I became a casual fan. But the Lord of the Rings... It’s been my passion for more than 15 years. Everything about it is just so unique. It’s incomparable, no matter what!
The thing is GoT was great because of the scheeming. Lotr was great because of the fantasy badassery it had. There was no magic shit in GoT.
Default Name and LotR has its fair share of tragedies too, so it’s not like everything was going right for the characters. Meanwhile, GoT is realistic, to a certain extent, but feels kinda random and forced at times (something that was never seen in LotR).
Dark lores watch it. You won’t regret it.
@Default Name Even moreso, the LOTR is a black and white world. It is very clear what is good, what is bad, but the characters are more complex than that. Just look at Gollum, and even Frodo, who decided at the end to keep the ring for himself.
It's not just LOTR, Tolkien's universe overall is untouchable.
"The Rohirrim sometimes referred to themselves as Eorlingas"
Everything in LOTR has like 6 different names...
@@lucianomeira8392 The Rohirrim have their own language as they originally lived within their own territory along the Anduin river. "Eorlingas" derives from their first King Eorl who got the lands of Calenardhon (originally the north part of Gondor) as a present from the Steward Cirion after the Rohirrim helped Gondor to win against some eastern invadors. The land's name then changed to Rohan, which means 'land of the horse lords' :)
