  • In 1974 Ford of Germany created the epic Cosworth GAA powered Capri RS3100 Group 2 racer specifically to crush its rival BMW in the European Touring Car Championship. Its believed only three of these factory race cars were made. And we’ve got one of them right here! This is an ultra-rare, genuine Ford factory racer.

Amazing that back in 1974 they were getting 450 bhp out of a 3.4 liter V6

From what I understand the "spoiler in the boot" story for the BMW was in fact quite true.

@@theroaringseason380 It is most definitely true - a friend in France bought a perfect, original CSL about 30 years ago which came complete with spoiler in the boot, still in its factory wrapping...

"spoiler in the boot" was part of the shenanigans & fun of the ETCC era. The Ford Capri had rear leaf springs, which to be kept in place to abide the rules. Ford did, with a "plastic" single leaf, adding coilover dampness, a 4-link & Watts linkage. The leaf springs were effectively a "suggestion" for the scrutineers.😄

🥝✔️² Indicates.I Saw it earlier on your news feed. Few realise the 60° Colonge and 60° Essex the GAA Cosworth was based on share the same bore centre spacings, a hangover from the Cologne engine plants pre WW2 1936 Ford Truck 90 degree Two stroke V-6's 4.76 inch bore spacings. The Essex shares the 4 litre Explorer V6 deck height. Ford of Europe were smart enough, through Walter Hayes, to pick and choose the right iron V6 blocks to race with. The RS3100 and its 3.4 litre GAA Works Cosworth engine was quite simply the best blend of the development work from the RS2600. How amazing to have Big Al Turner make sure these magical cars got to play in Australia and New Zealand as well as the European Touring Car Challenges Group 2 category. Thanks SH, for sharing this.

Really enjoyed this video as I always loved this vehicle, remember seeing Allan Moffat race this car back in Australia in the 1970's. Not only is it beautiful but the sound was simply sensational,
    Cannot wait for Pt.2

Just one thing: the three works RS3100 Group 2 Race Cars, such as the one in this video, while based on the production model RS3100 built in Cologne, Germany, were in fact built from the ground up by AVO, Ford's Advanced Vehicle Operations facility in Essex, UK. They weren't even constructed from panels pressed in Cologne, AVO built everything in-house. They were sent to Ford's Competition Department in Cologne only for Homologation purposes as that's where the production models were built, and Driver Support during European competitions. I'm not sure why these extremely rare British race cars are so often misrepresented as being German-built.

According to researcher and author Jeremy Walton there were five race Capri RS3100's built by Cologne in 1974, humorously listed as Maus 1 - 5.
Two were raced in the DRM and two in the ETCC with the fifth car kept as a spare.

Thanks. Great info. Before putting this vid together I consulted with a good friend who is a historian of these cars. He owns original factory RS2600s from 1972 and '73. He said Ford regularly updated last years cars to the latest specs as well as building all-new cars. It seems also the ETCC cars did double duty in the DRM, I assume because the ETCC had been shortened so much in '74. The RS3100 (chassis GAECPY19998) owned by the Muecke's shows history in both championships: www.muecke-motorsport-classic.de/FAHRZEUGE/CLASSIC-CARS/RENNFAHRZEUGE/FORD-CAPRI-RS3100-COSWORTH.html?fbclid=IwAR3LKpSqkL5gU-SsvQeMhGduNLhqr2oVWvDn-fdwxnT6YLMaOKq-NLJJ6ac

To answer the question in the title: No considering that Group 2 BMW 3.0 CSLs won the European Touring Car Championship in '73, '75, '76, '77, '78 and '79 while also winning their class at Le Mans '73. That said in 1974 Ford did win the ETCC...with an Escort 1600RS.
