  • Here's a video about the ‪@breittracing‬ Ford Capri RS 3100, driven by Emile Breittmayer, in action around Mugello Circuit during the humid qualifying session of the Heritage Touring Cup championship by ‪@peterautoracing‬!
The Capri was launched in 1969 as the European counterpart to the wildly popular Mustang in the USA. In 1970 a new version, called RS 2600, was introduced for the German market and featured some very serious modifications, making Capri one of the fastest cars in Europe at that time. The engine was a Cologne 2.6-liter OHV 2-valves V6, reassembled by Weslake and also featured its special all-alloy cylinder heads. The Capri RS2600 used Kugelfischer fuel injection to raise power to 150 bhp and also received modified suspension, a close ratio gearbox, lightened bodywork panels, ventilated disc brakes and aluminium wheels. It could hit 100 km/h from a standstill in 7.7 seconds.
The RS 2600 was immediately used as a basis for the racing model, which was built in order to comply with Group 2 rules. It was raced in the 'up to 3-liter' category in many championship where FIA Group 2 cars were accepted but it mainly collected its success in the European Touring Car Championship. Being fielded in this 'under 3 liter' category, the V6 engine of the steet-legal version was increased in displacement in various steps until reaching the final 2995cc mark in 1973. This final evolution had 320 hp at 7600 rpm and boasted a torque of 324 Nm at 5500 rpm. The curbweight of the car was around 920 kg. The Gr. 2 RS 2600 was also provided with a new aerodynamic package in late 1972 that was needed for higher top speeds on faster tracks.
1973 marked the arrival of newly BMW E9-based 3.0 CSL which, like the RS 2600, was a homologation special created purely to pave the way for the most extreme Group 2 challenger possible. The CSL went on to dominate once BMW had homologated a further uprated 3.2-litre version with a wild new ‘Batmobile’ aero kit mid-way through season.
As per the CSL ‘Batmobile’, in late 1973 Ford developed a further iteration of the Capri RS to homologate the parts needed to compete head-to-head with BMW in the European Touring Car Championship. In fact for the 1974 season the sport's governing body introduced various changes to the Group 2 regulations, such as twin-cam/DOHC heads to be fitted, provided that at least 100 Evolution-type cars that contained said improvements had been produced for street use.
With the help of Cosworth the Essex 3.1-litre OHC engine of the new RS 3100 was tuned and modified in the 3.4-litre DOHC 'GAA' V6 engine, which was able to produce 435-440hp at 8,750 rpm in race trim. Other upgrade were done to the aero with an improved body kit which was influenced by the fact radiators were moved from the front to the rear wheel arches for weight balance purposes. The '74 RS 3100s weighed just 1,050 kg.

True- even more impressive when you take into account the amount of play in the shifter. Upon further observation you may also note that the driver is very comfortable on the limit, judging by his placement of the car at the edge over wet curbs and constant inputs to keep the car on the circuit. The shot with the bent car on the flat bed is a very common site during non-race sessions under similar conditions. Great video!

This sounds incredible, kinda F1 sounding with all those revs and that superb engine scream! Also a massive thank you for the very detailed write up in the description about the car and engine evolution. Spot on mate!

Its a bonkers idea but due to the fact i will never be able to afford a GAA Capri its as near as i will get to experience this amazing machine. Good luck with the filming in the future

I wonder what is going on with the need to tap the brake pedal a few times with the left foot before braking for a corner? Pad knock off?

Making sure the brake pads are up against the brake discs ...1mm knock back is 3" of long pedal which = going straight on at the next corner

Friggin' guy has a Schrodinger gearbox in this car, the gears only exist if you shift into them.
Also, 5:43, how to tune Escort suspension:
"How stiff do you want the front sway bar?"
    "Yes."
"How stiff do you want the rear sway bar?"
    "No."
I love old touring cars, they're oversized go-karts filled with questionable engineering and they can't help but absolutely ooze personality from every slightly misaligned seam.

It was a nasty sounding car, but sadly, it Did not start on the first try... 🙄 Oh well. Still doesn't beat the 80s Zakspeed Ford or the 70s Hendrick tuned Chevrolet Monza.
