Total yes to the " clad" delete option, or at least an option to make it body color. Happy New Year!
Actually, without the cladding, it would look weird with the high ride height. The cladding provides a little optical illusion with low profile wheel/tire combo. Without the cladding, you'd have to lower it significantly, making it a regular e-class wagon. Which I'd be okay with.
Big yes to have a delete option on the cladding.
That and an amg line optics package. Weirdly you can get those amazing 20 inch amg wheels for it which arent even available for the regular e class estete, sedan, coupe or cabriolet
Spot on with the depreciation comment .... i like it - much better than any SUV. Keep the cladding for me
I have an All Terrain E-Class. Pre-facelift and diesel though. It’s super comfy and roomy, and the 4Matic system is really good (almost quattro good and way better than xDrive when you count in the co-operation of the four wheel drive system and the traction control).
EDIT: now after driving a lot in pretty serious winter conditions, I have to say that the current 4Matic is even better than quattros I have had the privilege to drive with one caveat. 4Matic understeers a bit easier than quattro, but applying some power removes this understeering tendency. 4Matic have to be driven with determination where quattro could be handled easier by novice drivers.
Try switching steering to Sport mode. That fixes it for me.
After our 2012 Forester was deemed junk and a tinbox I would be caught dead in an Outback. But we did enjoy our 2018 Regal TourX with fender cladding as it blended in better with the black paint. What was surprising was the 35 mpg at 65 mph and never saw less than 30 mpg in the summer with AC on playing currier.
They took a lovely station wagon and turned it into a Subaru outback! If the aren't going to let us buy the regular E450, at least give the option to paint the stupid cladding. No one os going to take these off road.
Everyone is going to take these off road. Like one's driveway at the summer cabin in Martha's Vineyard.
They should of made the body cladding at minimum gloss black and/or option for body colored. I've been looking at an E-Class wagon for awhile and the pre-facelift is such a better looker, but I like the newer tech in the face-lift minus that steering wheel. Basically agree with everything you said. They should of went with the Volvo route and offer the All-Terrain (Volvo Cross Country) on lots and the normal wagon as special order only.
omfg. that rear facing seat, that might be the coolest thing i've ever seen.
Great review. I decided against buying a 2021 and will be picking up a leftover new 2020 E-class wagon next Friday. From people on the MB forums, they have decontented some small but handy features from the 2021 that were standard in the 2020. Also some folks have been saying the 2021 inline 6 with mild hybrid is apparently not as good performance as the 2020 V6 engine. Finally, I didn't want high repair bills that WILL come with the air-suspension. Some folks who ordered their 2017 - 2020 E-wagons with the optional air suspension have had issues with very expensive repair bills.
Years ago there was talk about an E class wagon with portal axes. There was even a working prototype which was pretty cool. Maybe this one is what's left of the rather radical idea. Happy new year btw :-) !
Nah this one was there before that prototype. And they just created the prototype for fun they never wanted to make it a real thing. Same for the eqc with portal axles
+1 .. 'An obscure law on the books.....in three states" ... A hilarious intro! .. +1 Agree. .. "I like this a lot, it's not an E63S wagon. .. Rather It has a familiar relaxed personality to it, along with some real muscle underneath the hood." .. I could not agree more with MotorMan's MB E450 wagon assessment. .. Six months into our very own '23 E450 ownership (Long term) and I'm pleased to have canceled a 14-month-long wait for an Audi RS6 order. ..
Here at 8,150Ft elevation the E450 3.0l inline /9sp driveline can scoot with no problem.... Additionally, I'd save a bunch of dough$ over the pricier E63S & RS6 wagons. .. Still at $96K all in ($92 & $4K MB extended new car warranty) so bring money. .. Cheers, M/S
I like it too, a lot. I have had the car for a year now and it is a dream to drive.
Andie's dream vehicle!!
She is more than welcome to come and hang out with Kumo and I here in the California Republic any time:)
Does it come with the necessary “drool removal on the windows “ cloth? 😜
The All Terrain has variable control of the suspension. Most all other reviews rave about the handling and ride of the new All Terrain.
I just purchased a 2020 E-450 wagon because I didn't like the plastic body cladding but most importantly, I did not want the air suspension. If one visits the MB forums, there are many people who once out of warranty have had extremely expensive repairs to the air suspension system. Some, up to the tune of $2K per corner. That being said, I absolutely love my E-450 wagon and I'm very happy with the vehicle. My MSRP was $75110 and I got it for $66780.
Are the rear wheels still air suspension?
The cladding was the tipping point that brought me here. That and the non-grey red paint. Well executed review and video.
Had fun watching this. You're fun and not long winded
Thank you, Judah!
So many Americans like black or grey cars that the cladding really won't stick out. Maybe MB should sell an "AMG appearance package" that replaces the cladding with sportier body-colored panels.
I like the cladding
It might not be perfect but estate cars are so much better than SUVs so it’s a yes from me.
@jonny5777 .... +1. Agreed. . Station wagon's or "Kombi" as there known in Europe are plentiful. . Really plentiful...
+1. ..I hear that... MBUSA, please offer the E450 Kombi (as available in Germany) in two flavors; With or without the All-Terrain body aesthetic.
Edit 1 January 2023 ... The 8-month wait is over as our "23 All-Terrain order is a week away from delivery. .. In our house, it is not every decade that a new auto shows up (these puppies are expensive) .. The fleet is my '98 Carrera S, the Frau's '15 Cayman GTS & 2020 Subi Outback XT wagon, and my very own Luxo-barge '23 All-terrain.. Gotta luv MBs recent inline 6cyl 3.0l T with 9sp gearbox chassis. .. Gawd luv a smooth inline 6 cyl ....! ... MotoMan, many thanks for your detailed and insightful '21 E450 review ... I've viewed it many times. .. Cheers, Subi owner in Vail, Colorado
Nice review. One more thing for the wish list: scrap the fake exhaust tips.
How do you get those cars so fast? Even in Germany there isn´t a review for that car yet.
Because Germans are smarter and want the actual wagon, not the off-roady version.
@@BavarianDDR17 ... Germans are smarter than the average Yellow Stone Park bear.... Goofy aesthetically misleading Outback wheel well cladding with standard auto ride height... Sounds like a hand-job to me ...
I like that it has the back facing kids seat that many had in the 80s & 70s
Totally! 😀
Thanks for the review! I don't even know this vehicle exists. Yes, the AMG version is almost unnecessary now...
@Kasio 228 .. +1.. Agreed. .. The E63 AMG wagon seems almost unnecessary. .. The sweet MB inline 6 cyl turbo charged coupled to the MB 9sp gearbox does the trick.. MB inline 6cyl turbo is engineered like no other . . . .
Bring back the Country Squire, Colony Park, and Vista Cruiser.
+1.. Agreed .... In HS we got so stoned in a buddies hand-me-down Olds Vista Cruiser..... Fond memories the mid 1970s....
Great Review .. I saw one today .. and yes we have three Subi’s so I had a good laugh. We’ve been Benz fans and owners. I like it too .. I like that you won’t see yourself coming and going when out and about .. good move MB !
Me an owner of a 2020 Outback XT watching this video hoping Mercedes will still make an off-road wagon in 6 years when my extended warranty is done and I’m at a finical point in my life where I can afford one
Got my regal Tourx for 32k. Sure I'd rather have the Benz but I truly do love my car and it's as rare as they get in the states cause nobody knows they exist lol
Same here, got our TourX Essence a year ago for a great price and we love it. People never know what they're looking at when we drive past them, and I think the rear 3/4 angle and rear end is the best part of the car.
Maybe one day we'll upgrade to this E450 All Terrain. Definitely like the electrified powertrain, but don't like the creaky interior problem Mercedes seems to have.
@@BavarianDDR17 .. A contrarian experience to "the creaky interior problems" is that of my 26 yo 1994 E-320 Coupe, a C124 series. . The Coupe is as solid as a granite rock. . Never an interior or chassis creak, being library quiet at any speed. . Open checkbook service practices with soapy buckets of water for weekend cleaning. . The Ole coupe is as-new. .
@@michaelschneider- Oh yea, old Mercedes built like a bank vault are the best. My comment about their creaky interiors is mostly about their latest crop of interior designs.
Bring back the “luxury version” with the emblem hood ornament and analog clock inside, dual climate zones in the rear as the A6 Allroad has, and a full panoramic glass roof in lieu of two moon roofs. Also an “active key” like Jaguar offers.
Nice review in the opinion of a 2 Fuji Industries fleet owner; 20 WRX & 22 Outback Onyx XT
I am trying to support you Motoman because you are the best on the web! But three hours of commercials is a bit much for a twenty minute video.
If you know Metalcore.....BLEH ! for the plastic cladding.
A good car video always have a 360 walk around...
I wonder why someone would get this wagon instead of a full GLE? Is it because they don't want the height? The E450 wagon is beautiful but I grew up in the 70s and 80s and can't stop thinking of the Brady Bunch driving around to get groceries and then being stopped by a director to film a laundry detergent commercial.
Remember that episode well . . . as well as that crazy aunt:)
@@MotoManTV LOL. Aunt Jenny. Played by Imogene Coca. "Haven't dropped a grain of rice in 20 years!"
On the wish list, E400d straight six diesel. Oomph
As always, excellent work, M.
Great intro
With a decade in new car sales I find it very hard to believe that a MB ( King of the Lease ) has any model with high rates of finance or even more so cash sales.
I can tell you this
It’s very expensive to lease a wagon
I buy mine cash
It's very irritating that the crossover versions of wagons always cost LESS. The E450 All Terrain starts at $67k. The GLE starts at $55k, but that is partially because it has a smaller engine option. But if the powertrain is the same, the GLE450 starts at $62k, $5k lower than the wagon.
Wagon buyers are always punished =(
@@BavarianDDR17 +1.. We're a week away from taking a '23 All-Terrain wagon delivery .. A 7 month wait ... The global chip shortage has us worried for awhile... In the end our "all -options" build came through. (no panorama roof, night-black trim or 20-inch wheels option) The '23 S213 wagon will make a great 10yr to 15 yr ownership.. Plenty of EV models coming ...For now we'll pass. .
Cheers, wagon fan's
It needs to have a heated steering wheel on the options list particularly for markets with permanently crap weather 🇬🇧
They need to have or makes space for an optional CD ,/DVD player to connect either in the glove box of in center section . some people have not converted all music and film to digital plus not everything is on satellite radio not do I want another pay service fee
@Darryl Coats ... +1.. Agreed...
That is the exact drivetrain I would like to have in my 3700lbs Forester XT.
Too much money....but it is nice. Get the Volvo V90 for $20K less.
Love my V90 CC
@@ahome8089 love mine too!
Can't believe they got rid of the traditional wagon... this thing is heidious! just bring back the old wagon option!
@Dan L. +1 Agreed. The E-Class wagon in Germany can be bought in "traditional" exterior trim.
The cladding is good at stopping paint damage from loose surfaces, gravel, stone, heavily gritted roads. It's a pity the ground clearance is only 5.75", the Volvo V90 Cross Country is 7.8".
+1.. Agreed. The wife's new 2020 Subi Outback XT wagon is around 8.7 inches of ground clearance right out of the box ... Damn good automobile too ...
Happy new year! Yes it's a great undercover station wagon with SUV accents (alias "cladding), that should work in the US too? George and all the US car nerds, you don't count :)
Very rare in the Mutterland over here, I guess I did not see one until now. Looking good for me, also in red is good.
No wishes for changing maybe in PHEV version over here?
PS: I hope you get a like from Oregon from this review !
Proud to be a car nerd . . . Happy New Year! Edit: Almost forgot . . . Ran this one past the *repeat* Outback offender, a/k/a my sister in law . . . And now she wants an Q5 . . . Kumo and I will continue to work on her.
@@MotoManTV a Q5? really? After you showed her this Station wagon? Why...
Ok the Audi is good car - I drove some older Versions, it's basically a A4 station wagon on stilts underneath and in a lower price category too.
We leased a GLE580 for less than the msrp of this car. We had E400 wagon for 3 years. Beautiful car but the v8 is better and GLE has more space 2nd row
That's why MB makes both. Because I need to carry 7 dogs, and old dogs have a hard time getting into the higher load height of an SUV. And the E450 is way more fun to drive than any SUV since it has a lower CG and harder to roll over. Also for my money the E450 has a way nicer interior than any of the standard MB SUV's.
@@42judge ... +1. Agreed. A new '23 All-Terrain owner with 2 Portuguese Water Dogs.. "Hey wait for us...."
Let's be honest MB, you aren't going to attract any Subaru buyers by making your car uglier. You will however lose sales from people who expect the E wagon to be elegant. My husband saw this coming and got me a 2019. Which I love.
Interesting. Thanks for the review. Ok “v-max” and “delta” yes you know your tech jargon. LOL. Why would I want 20 inch tires on a light terrain wagon? And no need to be drag racing it either.
19 inch tires are great on my new 2021 E-450 All Terrain Wagon.
@cndam... +1 Agreed... And, the 20-inch wheel option is stupid... Rim dimensions: 8.5 x 20" front axle and 9.5 x 20" rear axle .... So much for tire rotation / life... If we could have ordered our '23 All-Terrain with 8.5 x 18" alloys (like past MY19 & MY20 wagons) we would have... There is nothing "All-Terrain" about the All Terrain . . . You can't shine a sneaker .....
I like how the name of the pilot of plane in the background keeps changing...
From NYC, best regards 2021
Wish list: how about nice and smaller wheels to all luxury car makers, I don't have time to change bad wheels even though is full covered by wheels insurance, let spend more time driving...
@Faye Hall. . The streets in the "city" are a joke. Fond memories of having lived in Chelsea during the '80s and early '90s. . My little VW GTI had bent an alloy wheel more than once driving up the Henry Hudson en route to the GWB. . Cheers, Ms. Faye ..
You mind explaining why you say adding the 48v hybrid system will help reliably,, I understand why you would say electric is more reliable but when you are just adding an electric component to an additional gas engine seems like more things to break
Because they have combined the starter, alternator, and electric assist motor into one component. No traditional starter or alternator to fail down the road like they do on some cars.
i wouldnt floor heavy cars especially from a standstill. metallurgy isnt invincible. you're just wearing out the engine and trans faster.
A beauty!
I bought last years model because I hated the cladding
I now own a 14 E 350 wagon and a 20 E450
The cladding just turned me off, I traded in a 19E63s sedan
I like the wagon better
I think Mercedes still offers the standard wagon in Europe
@Bourbon Traveler +1. . Yes the 2021 E-Class Kombi - You can have it your way. . For as long as I can remember,,, cars in Germany are built/sold ala cart. .You can have it your way.
An optional inline 6 diesel engine combined with 48V hybrid would make it top pick for me..
Me too.
@Anas Alhajeh +1 . .Agreed. A torquey diesel burner w/9sp automatic could be a left lane cruiser . . .
The AMG actually cost almost TWICE the price. Remember the insurance premium costs with an AMG vehicle.
@ John Adams .. +1.. Agreed .. You aint kidding when it comes to insuring the E63 AMG wagon VS E450 wagon. .. Scary costs
1. The e450 all terrain or the A6 Allroad?
2. Lease or buy?
Depends
Leasing a car is an atomic bomb on your financial future.
@@MotoManTV +1. Agreed. . Leasing is the most expensive method...... Not in this lifetime; My.02 cents.
Thank you for mentioning resale value. My dream car is the Mercedes E Class all Terrain and yes the Audi Colors are quite boring.
@Michael Elliott McWilliams... +1. Agreed. The "Subaru Outback colors are drab" ....
I’d probably add Maine to that list!
@Jim McMahon ... +1 .. Isn't the state of Maine where North American Subaru importer Bricklin got there start? .. Cheers,
What do you think maximum wading depth is? Intake is at top of grill? No lt looking to go into deep water but make it through 12” without an issue.
It can be raised up to 6.4” of ground clearance?
That’s a sexy ass station wagon
@Jay Polo .... +1 agreed. But the 20" oversized summer tires & wheel rims are pointless... If that wasn't enough ... All the tires are Run Flat type as there is no spare tire in the All-Terrain wagon...
Why not buy a 400d almost as powerful (340bhp) and the perfect engine to compliment it.
looks nearly exactly like the Buick wagon... GM ought to sue. But wth, they'll sell like 300 in the whole country....
GLC300 or E450 ?
10:09 - Mercedes should offer the burgundy color from Maybach to this wagon (and to the AMG 63S). The color palette is just too commonplace for 2021.
@Will T .. Model year 2022 added a few exterior colors to the pallet . . . .
Nice looking, a little pricey. Would be nice to have more suspension at 90k.
I found odd a off-road wagon with Pzero tires. What is the standard wheel size and tires?
245/45R19
@@user-bo8yt4uc8b +1.. Agreed. On rims 8 x 19" ET38 ... Many other E-Class models use a 245/40R19 on a 8.5 x 19" ET 43..
The 40 series tire is wider with a lightly shorter side wall.. or said another way, the All-Terrains 45 series tire has a taller sidewall .... I'm a new '23 All-Terrain owner ...
@@michaelschneider- Congratulations for a great car. I changed my All-Terrain Merc to Volvo XC60 T8 AWD which isn’t a bad car at all, but now that we have winter conditions I have been missing the 4Matic system. The AWD system Volvo has in these hybrid cars isn’t very good.
Uggghhh…can we please just get the standard E wagon please! I don't want my wagon to be raised up and hate the plastic wheel arches.
Oh, not Outbacks, but Forester Sports ..
Here's the thing if I was contemplating replacing my Range Rover with this Mercedes estate: would the "all terrain" mods allow me to go places the normal Mercedes wagon would not, and sort of bridge the off-road gap between normal cars and my SUV? And the answer is mostly, no. The reason is that the ground clearance is still modest, and the verrrryyyy long wheelbase of this verrryy long car, works against even this ground clearance in leaving more situations where you could get high centred. So if a Mercedes wagon would still essentially be a highway cruiser, then why not get the AMG (either version) and accept it? Hence my thought, that this is "neither fish nor fowl"... the Germans have a saying for this too... ;~)
Outback has 8.7 inches of ground clearance but no real underbody protection and the CVT (see youtube) gets in the way of medium off road duty (which most people never do anyway)
@@videowsatcher this thing is not made for insane offroading nut for some gravel dirt roads and driving on grass maybe carrying around a horse trailer there and stuff like that. Its definitely more capable than a regular e class and enough for most people
@@timonxDlol for sure hence my comment people never do medium duty anyway; I drive a H6 and it covers 95% of my leisure needs (trail hiker and photographer) though its trunk is too small for a family get away if you have a large dog
@@videowsatcher - yes, but that's pretty good, 3 inches more than MM says this Mercedes has, plus a shorter wheelbase too. We had an Outback (06) some years back, and like you say it did winter fantastic, dirt roads also great, but anything more gnarly it did not like.

Clearly you did not watch the episode. The exact color is named @ 6:04 - at the top of our #OptionsGame segment - which I do in every episode.
@@MotoManTV ... Copy that.

My wish list....
If you're giving me a lifted wagon with the name "all terrain" then give me more ground clearance and smaller wheels with A/T tires.
Then I would think this wagon would be more of a head turner.
20"wheels and summer tires? Pointless.
And I know you hate black interiors, but, and especially for this application, is way more practical for a vehicle with the name "all terrain". Any light color interior, and a person with an "active" lifestyle will muck up the interior
Which exterior colour name?
There is only one red for e classes and its that one. In German its „Designo Hyazintrot Metallic“
@SULEMAN QADIR . +1. That's a proper red metallic for a wagon. . For my eyes it's Selenite Grey Metallic w/ Creme Beige Leather + Black Nappa Leather trim.
I don't see the point of this. 5.75 inches of ground clearance is barely more than a typical sedan.
Lift it 4" and put it on 35" tires. Battle wagon.
Lol at a 2 inch lift being "on stilts"! Oh the joys of automotive reviewers and their absurd hyperbole.
Why, why, why does it have to be this lifted stupid thing? It looks like they’ve discontinued the regular 450 wagon in Lou of this. Great. So there’s basically not a single wagon option in America other than the AMG or the RS six avant which are too pricey for me.
