    I have a vague, vague recollection of a minute mention of this line in an old model railway magazine, so it's good to see more about it. Thank you. You might consider the lost lines of the Clee Hill quarries in Shropshire for a programme - there's a lot still visible up there. Also the areas at both the head and mouth of the Tanat Valley (near Welshpool) have a lot of quarry tram remains.

    A most satisfying stocking filler! Couple of other things to look out for on your next visit... At the works, there are several cutouts in the loading platform for the wagon turntables. Short sections of rail can be seen embedded in concrete where the line entered the works building. On the hillside there is a stone-built dam to supply the works. Finally, back at the main road there are the remains of the some workers cottages. One minor correction; at 6:10 the line ran in front of the houses, along the shoreline from the bridge to the pier. The route there is still visible and walkable. I hope you had a chance to explore some of the Skye's other railways.

    Hi there...love your work....I write words and I've written a poem I think you might appreciate...let me know what you think?
    "Viaductophile"
    I'm a chronic viaductophile,
    I just can't get enough of that feeling,
    When i see a gulf spanned with brutal elegance,
    Embankment as foreplay,
    Enmeshed in the dance of the landscape,
    Created to carry the weight of the world wherever it needs to go,
    Passengers and freight,
    And post that cannot wait,
    So span the river,
    Cross the gorge,
    The iron works, the mine, the forge need linking to the town,
    And railways can't go up and down too much, you see,
    So now my Higher Powere is Brunel!
    And I dribble at the Ribblehead and swoon at Miller's Dale,
    Maidenhead gets me all worked up and the Forth Bridge cannot fail
    To drop the jaw,
    In deepest awe.....
    They just don't make 'em like that anymore!
    So now my browsing history is littered with bridges and tunnels and cuts,
    I need to put it all in perspective.....
    I know I'm a viaductophile,but,
    If this isn't love
    Why does it feel so good?

    This little, single-purpose line brings to my mind the Granite Railway of Quincy, Massachusetts--also constructed for the transport of quarried stone to dockside on the Neponset River in Milton. The Granite Railway was the first chartered railroad in the United States.
    Quite surprised after more than a century since closure that any structural trace of the mining operation and its associated railway remained to be found. Very interesting.

    I had been vaguely aware of this line, but knew nothing about it. There was another island railway, on Raasay I think. I somehow have the impression the railway dated from WW1 and was for some type of rock that after processing was used in munitions.
    Skye is huge. There's a good 40 miles from the bridge to Uig and still the majority of the island to go.

    • @RediscoveringLostRailways
      @RediscoveringLostRailways  3 года назад +1

      It is truly a wonderful place - I think the south and the coast around Elgol (not to mention the drive to it) is Skye at its most beautiful. M research indicated that this was not Skye's only railway and (as you say) there are more to be discovered on other islands!

    • @Nastyswimmer
      @Nastyswimmer 2 года назад +1

      The Raasay line carried ironstone from a mine inland down to the coast where it was calcined and shipped out. The other line that you're thinking of is the Leallt Valley Diatomite Railway that carried diatomite - a fine silica clay - dug from the bottom of Loch Cuithir, to the coast from where it was shipped to Ardeer in Ayrshire for making dynamite. Dynamite consists of nitro-glycerine absorbed into clay to make it more stable. The railway operated from 1889 until 1915.

      Skye had a surprising number railways, all narrow gauge. The Marble Line covered in this excellent video. The quary tramway at Ord that may have used some of the wagons from the Marble Line after it closed. Plus the Lealt Valley Railway supporting the extraction of diatomite. One railway remains in operation, the modern-ish cable worked incline at the Storr Lochs Hydro-Electic Power Station. Finally, while not on Skye, the adjacent Isle of Raasay had a railway for the carriage of iron ore.

    What a wonderful wee video as i never knew this line existed and it just goes to show just how important railways were in those days and thats what I love about them,no matter what the terrain they always found a way to build on them.. Will need to visit this the next time I am on Skye.. Thank you Edward for you excellent videos and may you and your family have a wonderful Christmas..😊

      I'm not surprised it is so unknown, so isolated and existing for only a few years - it would make a fine tourist line today!

      @@RediscoveringLostRailways it comes across as a pleasure. I wouldn't know where start doing a RUclips video. You have a professional touch which suggests you have a background in these things. So, what is your background?
      This question suggests I have a right to know something that isn't mine to know. Curiosity gets the better of me, so feel free to tell me to mind my own business. Thanks

      @@robertperring4194 that's OK - I'm a secondary school teacher, so a world away from this hobby of mine! No background experience to speak of, I just try to improve each time and (without wishing to be arrogant) just try to make the sort of film that I would be inclined to watch 🙂

      @@RediscoveringLostRailways where did the passion to do this come from? Does your pupils know you do this?

    • @RediscoveringLostRailways
      @RediscoveringLostRailways  3 года назад +1

      @@robertperring4194 I did a radio interview with a community station back in the summer - the fellow who conducted it has given me permission to put it on RUclips, wherein I explain how I got started. I should put it up, but I feel a bit self conscious as I feel my subscribers rightly want films about list railways. But perhaps I will at some point. Anyway, in short, a combination of a lifelong interest in the railway and an enthusiasm for filming! My pupils think I live in the school - suggesting I have a life outside of the place might blow their minds! 😁
