- Setting your travel trailer to your tow vehicle, How do I hook up my travel trailer to my tow vehicle? watch this video to see how. Ferreedom camping hooks up our 2021 Coachman Apex Outfitter to our tow vehicle. We also feature our Equalizer E2 weight distribution system. #camping #travel trailer #towvehicle #towing
Here are the numbers: Coachmen Outfitter 208BHS - 6,000 pounds GVWR (3,948 pounds dry) & 516 pounds Hitch Weight.
2016 Ford Explorer w/ 3.5 Ecoboost - 5,000 pound max towing w/class 3 hitch and WDH, 500 pound max tongue weight (including the weight of the WDH). Payload is 1,259 pounds. Cargo in the trailer, including water, propane, camping and living accessories, etc. will have to be limited to 1000 pounds. So a loaded trailer will have a tongue weight of 600 pounds at minimum with the WDH; add the occupants, plus typical cargo and this vehicle is pushing maximum payload, maximum tongue weight and maximum trailer weight all at the same time. If you add any of the following, you are asking for trouble: cross winds, being passed by trucks while going 65+, passing freight trucks, mountains or any grade (up or down). Don't do this folks. Know your weights and capacities and don't exceed them.
soooo...can it tow a deep v fishing boat? Like these: www.loweboats.com/deep-v-fish/
@@businessninja1913 I would think so. The smallest boat is 1850 lbs plus the trailers for it. Boats aren't nearly as big as a trailer, which can act like a sail. Big boats can be just as bad though
Are you a trucker? If not relax and hit the like button 👍🏿😅
Well put sir. The guy in this video seems more interested in pulling the maximum size trailer he can as opposed to what his SUV can safely handle. People like this are a danger to themselves and everyone else on the road.
I was just thinking the same... The first rule of trailer safety: Know your weights and towing capacity!
Safety first, wears sandals 😂. Seriously though good information. We tow a 30ft travel trailer (4,500lbs) with a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L. Glad to see someone else towing with an SUV.
🤔
I just ran across this video and was shocked to see this explorer pulling a 6000lb trailer. Folks do your research this is not safe.
Ehh the powere is there and the sport model has tighter suspension. Ive hauled a 3,500 lb class excavator behind mine with a 18ft trailer so she was over. No sway and it braked fine. But i stayed at or under 65mph. Just gotta be smart. I wouldn’t recommend it though. But if ur gonna do it make sure the weight distributed as best as possible
That explore might be able to tow it but I doubt it goes up hills very well and is not safe at high speed. Just because you’ve been to it doesn’t mean it safe.
I have a 2021 GMC elevation that has a max 920lbs tougue weight with a max 9,200 tow rating the truck has a max 7,000 lbs. The camper max 7,550 lbs. The truck has max 1870 lbs cargo capacity. You would subtract that weight from your 9200 lbs max towing and that would be your true towing capacity. More accurate go to a weight station. That's how I got the numbers but we don't put anymore then 1000lbs cargo in the truck add the tougue weight which is in the 1,000 lbs rest is passenger and in the bed. And the camper maybe another 800 lbs cargo my tanks are empty except for 2 to 3 gallons in the black & gray tanks each.. we don't boon dock so less weight. So we're way under the trucks capability. But it's good to go to a weight station for piece of mine to double check witch I did. PS: Dry weight of the camper is 5050 lbs so another 800lbs that's less then 6,000 lbs towing. I used 11% for the tougue weight. It came to less then 600 lbs. This camper is 29' long from hitch to bumper. PSS: keep in mine people this is a 1500 truck and even tho the weight is right the length might be to long for the truck. Personally 29' is as long as I would go because of laws of physics. Simply put you have a sailboat back there and a good stiff wind or tractor trailer pushes you around. And that 1500 would get pushed around. Anything longer I would go 3/4 or 1 ton on a truck. My personal opinion. Just food for thought on you newbies.
Just bought a Ford explorer xlt 2020, so this video was really handy!
That trailer looks wayy to heavy for the explorer tho. Mine tows 5000lb and that trailer looks like 8000+ , but i gues he just showing how to hook it up and not to really take on the road. Awesome vid!
We are new to towing with our Explorer. Thank you for showing us the proper way to hook up. Good information.
Very good job and explaining there are some channels that actually talk down to you then talk to you.
Just found your channel. EXCELLENT video!
Welcome aboard!
Awesome video - well done. Very helpful for beginner as we are.
Enjoyed the video! Ready to set mine up to my 2014 Acadia with towing package. Thanks!
Very nice presentation with many references on safety. Good job! Although I do find it odd hearing so much emphasis on safety while you are working in open toed flip flops. (My pet peeve.)
Yea, cause a little bit of fabric will protect your feet.
Same here. Put some damn boots on man 🥴🤦🏽♂️
Exactly this video shouldn't be on RUclips flip-flops are only minor compared to his many safety violations his trailer is too heavy for his vehicle....Yes his dry weight is fine but once gear propane and his tanks are full it's too close to his max towing weight not to mention the passengers in the vehicle and whatever supplies and gear that subtracts from the payload that subtracts from the towing capacity.
@@rudyjoe129 who gives a crap about flip flops?
I regularly pull my dual axle utility trailer grossing close to its 7k lb max( with firewood) and my f150 did it no problem, so I was surprised when I brought home our 24ft 4k lb travel trailer and it handled terrible. I was bouncing up and down and swaying all over the interstate. I now know that the the campers tongue weight is more than my utility trailer because of the relative position of the axles and that I need a weight distributing hitch with sway control. I'm also gonna invest in some timbren ses bump stops because my truck would benefit loaded, unloaded, towing,or hauling. I dont lack for power or braking, but certainly was caught with my pants down otherwise.
Been towing travel trailers for over 30 years. I learned early to never exceed 80% of my tow vehicle's towing capacity and especially it's payload capacity. Pushing the limits of you tow vehicle is a recipe for disaster. I tow a similar size camper with my 2019 Ford Expedition Limited with the Max Tow and Cargo Package. It is rated to tow 9300lbs and has a Payload Capacity of 1530lbs. That keeps me in the safety range. I know I have enough weight, suspension, and wheelbase stability to handle not only the weight of my loaded travel trailer, but also the dynamic sidewind pressure that you face with a 25 to 28 ft travel trailer. You are pushing the limits of a Ford Explorer, and pushing the limits is not a place I want to be out on the road.
I'm new to RV trailer towing world (we rented one time, but I did my research on all the trailer systems (including emptying the tanks) with the many excellent RUclips videos), and truly enjoyed this video too.......a Great job by Ferreedom Camping!.....and keep up the quality work!!!
Thanks for the kind words. And happy camping we will keep up the videos
Take advice from a professional he is putting lives in danger he is over weight!!!!! The vehicle and trailer combo is at his max limit !!!!!!
This is why you don't trust the Internet.
Thank you 👍Answered my questions. Great video.
Glad to help!
Nice and good review

Newbies might not know that stabilizer jacks are JUST for stabilizing. I hear that if you try to lift or level with them (big temptation) you'll crack/bend/pull-apart the floorboards, or something awful like that.
That trailer looks too heavy for your vehicle especially if your putting anything in the trailer like carrying full tank of water. So I have a question, the Ford explorers come with anti sway algorithm for towing do you think by having sway bars that might mess up the vehicles programming?
The the job of the trailer sway control algorithm is to dampen yaw oscillations. It will not mind one bit if it gets help from the bars.
Good video!
Thanks!
That seems like a lot of weight for a ford explorer, they are only rated for 5k pounds which really means about 4k, good luck towing that in the mountains with that vehicle.
Who's talking about saftey when he's towing an TT with a Ford Explorer. What an idiot
What about if you live in the flat land would this be ok. My camping ground is less then 45 minute with no hill
@@Smiley-zm1rp I guess if that’s the only place you are going to camp, its not an enjoyable tow when your at the max of your vehicle, I once pulled my trailer with my wife’s Honda Pilot it’s also rated for 5k pounds and we were in the mountains and we got a warning light that came on that our transmission was to hot and to turn of the engine, what a horrible feeling
@@williamtucker5855 thanks for the heads up but everything is pointing to a geo pro, 3000lbs
That’s what I have, geo pro 19fbs, great choice you will love it, I think the new ones 2022 have double azdel walls and are a foot longer, maybe look at one of those! Enjoy
yeah, I agree with other guy, too big a trailer for a ford explorer....
With 5000 towing capacity you have to take the vehicle payload into consideration and minus that off the towing capacity right?
Thanks, I've learned a lot on how to connect camper trailer to a tow truck. Do you have a video step-by-step on how to park the camper trailer into a camp area?
Thank you.
If you didn't know the size of the receiver end of the trailer, and if it was a trailer you hadn't used before, how would you know what to do and if it was compatible? (This may be the case when looking at used trailers for sale). And also can you put a 2 inch receiver on a 1.5" ball? Or do they have to be exactly the same size for both parts?
Awesome info!! We are towing with a 2016 Ford Explorer too. Lots of good info!! Thank you!!
It is bad information he is giving.
Please read all the comments.
This man is going to get someone killed with his horribly irresponsible bad advise.
He seriously lacks common sense and humility.

That's good advice
I wiling to bet the trailer is out of the safe towing capacity for that explorer, especially if he uses the SUV's payload and adds weight to the trailer.
Excellent video
you kept saying "sway control" - when in reality it is a "weight distribution". Two completely different things
They both sound like good things to control for - can you get hitches that address both?
I assumed fixing the weight distribution fixed the swaying problem?
Ikr, sway & WD 2 totally different aspects of towing. I have been towing a trailer for 6 months & after watching 2 of this person's videos have come to the conclusion this guy is just trying to sell people with SUVS a trailer. Thank God when I was learning all this towing crap my RUclips algorithm gave me suggestions from GOOD channels. From the little I've seen here, you're disseminating dangerous & inaccurate information IMHO. ✌
@@pamlove421 he should be banned before someone takes his advice and ends up killing someone....
At 4:53 you describe applying the foot break and placing the car in neutral. What do you need to apply the foot break for as opposed to placing the car in park?
Very helpful and well done video. Thank you!
No it's dangerous on so many levels!!!
In this google search world we live in, we can find numbers, figures, and people with the answer we are looking for, not always the answer we need. One thing I have learned in my years of camping, towing, and driving large trucks is the questions should not be, "Can this tow vehicle tow this trailer? Instead, it should be, "SHOULD this tow vehicle tow this trailer?" And sadly, the first question is usually where people stop when the answers to the two questions are often different. If you are new to travel trailers and towing, do a lot of research. Don't find one video and say, "Alright, I can pull a 5th wheel with my Ford Ranger!" Yes, I'm exaggerating, but we all know those knuckle heads are out there rolling down the highway.
I've never towed a camper, but I am fixing to buy one. I have a 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline 4cyl. 300 horsepower turbo charged. 5600 pounds GVWR. My question is, does anyone have experience with towing with a vehicle like that. Meaning going up hills, stopping accelerating and so on. Is it safe in other words. I'll have my wife and two kids in the vehicle with me thanks
I don't know why it says intellectual lol. My name is Mark Turner
Nice camper 👌
You should show things that can’t be seen - like when you hooked the first weight distribution bar on the far side we had no idea what you were doing. You should have done the on on the camera side first. Also when you “hooked up” the breakaway cable - no idea what you connected it to.
how do you know how high to raise the tow vehicle before you put the bars on
Always make sure too that the ball on hitch that the nut hasn’t backed out at all
Liability magnet towing this much weight. Trans / motor are not the limiting factor here.
That’s too big of a trailer for that explorer. Your max tow on that explorer with the eco is 5,000lbs. I’m guessing you’re over weight with that trailer loaded.
Not sure what length his apex is, mine is 21 feet and 3800 pounds dry. My explorers rating is 5500 pounds. Does pretty good with it.

Great video! I didn't see you add an extended side mirrors. Is it necessary ?
I did not add them with the tow package on the explorer it has wide angles built in already I actually can see very well!
Freedom Camping, Good video, very well explained. Question.... Can you comment on the specs for your Fastway E2? is that kit the 600lb?
So the Equilizer E2 we have is basically "2" points of weight distribution. The E4 is "4" points of weight distribution. The E2 is made more for suvs and lighter duty trucks and trailer combo. The E4 is for heavier trailer and definitely pick up trucks. I believe without digging my bars out they are the 800lb. Next time I'm at my travel trailer I will check for you!
@@FerreedomOutdoors The E2 and E4 refers to points of sway control not weight distrbution. The 600, 800, 1000 lb... is the rating with reference to the setup's ability to distribute weight and is relative to the tongue weight of the trailer.
@@IH-nr7dx E2 and E4 are points of control, so you are correct there. Equilizer also classifies their systems as sway control. It is actually on the labeling as well. Some of the other units that utilize chains are NOT sway control as well. The solid points of contact and the functionality of the hitch actually do infact help with sway. See Equilizers website for more details. This is why we also love their product. In my opinion it's the best on the market. Happy Camping!
So let me double check, once I put the tongue on the trailer ball, I then raise it back up to connect a sway bars??
yes that takes the tension off so you can get the bars on easily

wow, this the best video I've seen for setting a travel trailer. Thank you so much! BTW, is it Equalizer E2 or Fastway E2? Checked on Amazon, didn't find Equalizer E2, only saw Fastway E2.
Thank you
I think you put your chains on wrong. Make sure they face back towards you when connecting to your vehicle so the opening is upwards.
I have a explorer and was looking into a smaller trailer the clipper 17. That apex trailer is 4200 pounds and by the time you add everyone's weight and gear , the weight will be over. Does it handle well?
It handles very well! I mentioned in another comment about I feel much more comfortable towing with this exorer than when I had towed with an older model truck in the past. Setting up to tow with correct wdh and just having your vehicle well maintained is key. I am going to shoot a video here very soon about weight, capabilities, gross weight and all of that good info and also dive into unibody vs full frame vehicles. I'd say if you have any towing experience at all towing the clipper 17 should be a breeze
@@davva360 I would respectfully disagree here. We have done our research and I am very qualified and knowledgeable in the automotive field. I am actually working on a video that is going to break this down in crazy detail, with facts and actual manufacturers specific information. We certainly take alot of heat for this but I have yet to hear any actual factual information from anyone as to why we can't tow this. It has been alot of speculation or people's personal opinions.. and yes if you personally aren't comfortable towing with something you shouldn't do it then. I also have said on here probably 100 times that everyone needs to do their research and make decisions based on their personal situation. No two situations are the same. I hope my new video will shed some light on towing no matter what vehicle it is and help those "weight critics" and help those who own SUVS that maybe want to camp. For our situation this tows great! And better than older trucks I've previously owned. So stayed tuned davva360 for our towing capabilities video
Do you run tow mirrors as well with the apex?
They make park for a reason man.
See our other comments. Consult your factory trained technician, putting your vehicle in park actually puts undo stress on your transmission. neutral with the parking brake is what you want in the situation.
Where or what store can you pick up a Sawy bar. Probably going tomorrow pick up a Camper. They said it’s 38ft and I’m assuming that’s from tongue to the back bumper. I’m pulling it with a 1/2 ton 2016 4x4 cab Colorado. Putting at camping site for year around. Guess I’m wondering if it’s safe enough to tow roughly 3 1/2 hours to campground.
i'd get the sway/ control weight distribution for safety
A Colorado is not a hafe ton truck and should not be pulling anything more then a very lite tent trailer.
Or have a tent and some camping gear placed in the back of the box.
The 38 ft trailer is a joke right.
You are kidding.
A 38 ft trailer is 1 ton diesel dually territory.
That is funny.
Then the comment that an equalizer hitch will make it safe was the icing on the cake.
@@darrinsteven7002 Darrin who said anything about pulling a 38ft trailer with a Colorado??? Everything comes down to weights by you saying a Colarado should only pull a tent trailer is your opinion. As I tell everyone on this channel over and over again do your own research. Consult your factory trained mechanic and a knowledgeable, reputable RV dealer. In our case very have done both actually above and beyond. We are talking facts here Darrin again not speculation. I see on a weekly bases people towing with half ton trucks that are overloaded. Everyone thinks because I have a truck I can tow anything. That certainly isn't the case. Does it have a factory tow package? Does it have the right motor/ trans combo. Does it have a transmission cooler. There are tons of factors out there. I am way under my GVRW and I have air suspension to make sure my trailer is at the correct angle for steering. Again I've done my research and proper planning. I also want people to understand that opinions such as some of the ones I've heard here with no facts of any kind are the only dangerous thing here. Know your numbers do your research.

I still think that's too much weight and length for the explorer. I have a GX 470 and I still wouldn't try to tow the trailer. To be on safe side and more convenient I rather get a class C motorhome. My family and other safety is fist.
This was a great video to watch just because I am in the process of getting a travel trailer camper and I was looking for a video particularly with a Ford Explorer was pulling one. I have a couple questions to ask did you have to get the brake controller installed or did you do that yourself, and and the length of your travel trailer and with all your gear what is the weight you’re pulling if you know that. Because I have the same explorer and year that you have, thanks again for this video.
The brake controller is pretty easy to install pending brand or manufacturer. If your pretty handy you maybe able to install yourself. However your Ford dealer should be able to do it in an hour for you. Loaded up we are just under 4600lbs, I am actually going to be doing a very in depth look at towing capacity and what is all means and put some myths and opinions to rest. This video will have tons of insight capacity, what the manufacturers really says and why your vehicle was built the way it was!!! so stay tuned for that video I will be launching that in a month when we set up our travel trailer for our first adventure for the season.
Do not get a trailer that size with your ford explorer. I dont care what hitch setup you use, the weight of this trailer exceeds the payload and towing capacity of a Ford Explorer. Not only will you damage the SUV, but you will endanger the lives of your family and others on the road.

As for nitrogen in your tires....not so. Nitrogen provides ZERO benefit in car and trailer tires. Trust me. I just retired from over 40 years in the nitrogen business. I helped develop the tire filling application in 1975 at Caterpillar Tractor in IL !! It works well on huge crawler tires. It's not any real benefit for car or trailer tires. None. Sorry. People selling that "consistent inflation" stuff are selling snake oil. If it's free then no issue. But if you pay for N2 in your tires.....you are getting ripped.
thanks for the info!
The first time I dealt with nitrogen in cars, it was on a new- then, 2016 Rav4. One tire was a little low, so I took it to the dealer to fill it up, as I of course had no nitrogen tanks at the house. They used a normal portable compressor, even after all that they say about nitrogen, blah, blah, blah. At that point, I knew it was JUST A GIMMICK that they try to sell; because after all, who has a nitrogen tank at the home to properly refill their tires; but then you go to the dealer and watch them use a regular ole compressor -- total BS on the parts of dealers.. The green caps are merely a gimmick- nothing more, nothing less.

Hi please put your suv in park not neutral! it is not secure to many bad things could happen if anything put it in park then brake.
I would disagree here. Putting it in Park is not good for your transmission. In neutral with the parking brake on is the way prevent unnecessary stress and damage to your transmission. Making sure your vehicle is properly maintained and making sure you are aware of what your doing is paramount here.
.
Your advice is dangerous.
Good info but please, for safety sake, wear work boots and NOT flip flops!!
Overweight across the board in 3,2,1......
100% incorrect...stayed tuned for our new video on weights and towing capabilities where we use facts and actual numbers
Just because you can don't mean you should. I hope you don't let kids ride with you doing that stupid shit. Towing with a midsize suv is asking for trouble. Towing with an under sized tow vehicle is never a good idea.
You forgot to mention checking that running lights, backup lights, Turn signals and brake lights are all working.
Did I? I thought I said about having someone help check your lights? If I didn't mention that you are absolutely correct!
@@FerreedomOutdoors I may be mistaken, but I do not remember you mentioning the lights. You mentioned the doors and all pins and other things. If I was wrong, I apologize.
Checking the lights is my wife's job. I also check towing mirrors. Interesting thing to do with the 7 pin cable, I never thought to place it in the hitch lock pin. Are you worried about excessive wear on the cable?
He mentioned the lights?
Safety??????
2 6 volt batteries are 130 lbs
2 30 lbs propane tanks are 110
EQ hutch is 75 lbs
That’s over 300 lbs without the trailer.
Your hitch weight is closer to 900 lbs for a max factory hitch weight rating of 500 lbs?
This is far from a safe towing set up.
Your numbers are way off...we have had the tongue weight without our bike rack it came out at 473lbs and...we have proper distribution.
Question here:D. Lets say youre done camping/are coming home to store your trailer. Are you levelling the trailer/using stabilizing jacks while its not in use, or is the front jack on the blocks sufficient when storing on property. Ty
I don't store it with the stabilizers down but level it front to back with the tongue jack
Safety is your first priority? This set up is just simply not safe... i wish you safe travels and I hope you won't tow that trailer with your explorer again.
Holy over weight Batman. I feel it is nessasary to comment to save lives. PEOPLE DONT DO THIS. DUDE TAKE THIS DOWN.
Nitrogen filled tires…….
I’m gonna start selling helium filled tires….
Good video otherwise
Love how the camera shows none of the important stuff blah blah blab
To much camper for a Ford Explorer. Be ready to replace the transmission sooner than later. In reality your camper is overloading your Explorer. Dangerous!
wrong on all accounts stay tuned for a new video we are launching very soon, it will have all our facts and figures and insights on towing capacity and towing with SUV's
The steering racks in the Explorer hate the extra weight as well.
That will be a costly repair when the dash lights up as the computer starts chucking codes.
Far to much weight for an SUV.to lug down the road. Very dangerous practice.
I feel bad for that SUV.
I guess good thing for maintenance and warranties. Just curiously what do you tow with?
Other FYI same motor and trans as the highest towing capacity F150 just saying. And we have rear air assistance... sure seams to tow better than my last truck actually...but what do I know only worked in the automotive field for 17years
@@FerreedomOutdoors love this comment! I subscribed! I’m learning there’s a towing capacity police 👮♀️ on the internet lol. Thanks for video. I’m thinking about the 191rbs and have asked around about towing it, and got lit up about considering it. I have a new Subaru Ascent rated 5000/500lb and manual says not to use WDH or sway control because too much pressure on uni body. I would appreciate your auto experience advice on this. Is this just a CYA disclaimer in ur opinion? Does Explorer mention anything like that? Thanks man. Keep up great videos 👍
@@golfr6178 I really appreciate the feed back and your right there are a lot of weight police. By NO means should you blatantly tow something way over your capacity or not consult your mechanic "factory trained" I might add. If Subaru recommends NOT using a WDH I would definitely heed the warning unless you can confirm from someone at the factory that it is OK. Subaru's as a whole have a good reputation in the collision industry for being great in crashes. Your unibody in your vehicle is designed to "crumple" in a certain direction and way. Subaru's recommendation here may be because the section point for your rear frame rails. They generally have a notch where they are designed to "fold" You actually maybe able to get some great factory direct information from Subaru via your local Subaru service manager that can reach out to the tech line or regional service director. Ford does not discourage using a WDH. I have recently learn some amazing information about the explorer and its towing capacity which will also put a ton in perspective for a lot of you out there. I am working on a video going into great depths on towing myths and towing with an SUV. AGAIN for the weight police out there I DO NOT CONDONE uneducated practices on towing. I always recommend doing your research. Golfr61 again I really do appreciate the comment and we will be kicking out some awesome videos for you guys so stay tuned!!!!!
@@FerreedomOutdoors thanks for the great advice. I’m in Binghamton Ny area, I see you’re in Pa? Hopefully run into u guys someday camping 🏕. Thanks again
Not a SET UP TO TOW video.
More of a connecting your trailer to tow vehicle video.
Meet the privileged and entitled
What's that supposed to mean?
