This is the most ive ever seen a reviewer pose a hottoy and show articulation, and it is very appreciated! Most youtubers gloss over articulation and RARELY push the joints to their full extent.
I feel the arms and legs on the Ryu figure should have been like Venom's. Their range would have been better and they could hide the cuts with his clothes. I don't really care about seamless bodies, joints or "pinless technology". I just care about the articulation working as it should.
Personally, I enjoy action figures that I can pose to be a little rough with. But I do think it’s interesting that these companies are doing things like this and improving slowly throughout time but overall, I’d rather have all the joints and everything.
Like I had mentioned about the Ryu reveiw, I'm not into the silicone. I just don't really trust it in terns of longevity. And, I don't think it looks great when posing, most of the time either. Just give me well sculpted joints. Sik
Great review Anthony. Hot Toys can be considered as a top ring type of action figure because of the detail put into their products. This product is part of that ring. IMO, I have diorama's with specific concepts. If the character fulfills the requisites for the diorama, the product is purchased. More often then not, the product is put into a pose for quite awhile. I prefer the detail over anything else in an action figure. A detailed product is so much easier to look at then a posable compromise. Thanks for your efforts on this one, I'm shopping Hot Toys now!
I'm not a cloth/ rubber or 1/6 figure fan but hot toys always look incredible. I prefer non seamless figures by a lot. The thought on seamless figures breaking down overtime and the folding/ limitations of the rubber especially at smaller scale is why I don't buy them.
I'm fine with joint showing. If a figure is built with a seamless body, it depends on the material. Seamless silicone bodies will deteriorate after a while and will crack so, I would not collect those figures. It's also the main reason why I chose not to get the Mezco Batman 1989 figure.
I prefer joints over sculpt however this one I feel is very sturdy and slight bends most likely won’t damage it over time like other seamless figures. They do have the half and half head for the second movie venom if you order that or the deluxe hot toys carnage that they just released. I love hot toys though, I know they aren’t the best poseable but it’s the likeness I enjoy along with being able to pose. I used to collect smaller figures like sh figuarts but they could never mail the likeness
To your question- whatever works for the specific figure and who is making the seamless body. If the figure is fully clothed or minor skin showing, then joints all the way.
I have been getting HTs since 2010 more or less and I can tell you the seamless thing is grossly overrated and it has polluted the hobby quite a bit, I care more about durability than something that will look nice for just a coulpe of years before it starts degrading. I have this figure and its one of the best they've ever done, and its got more articulation than you'd think
1/6 collector's of a certain type, typically Hot Toys, will jump down your throat for even suggesting something like strategically posed long hair so you can turn a figure's head. Hot Toys Captain Marvel, long hair version, has a suit so rigid it cannot move an inch without destroying it, and a head that can turn if you're care but not very well or very much. "Hot Toys is about the look, not the articulation." BUY A STATUE. Sorry lol, just basically agreeing with you. The seamless, btw, theres over 5 ways of doing it I can think of and the results vary extremely. Hot Toys Dark world Thor or BvS Wonder Woman used pretty rigid seamless rubbery material that fought you. Rey from Rise of Skywalker on the other hand somehow moves it's elbows seamlessly without ratchets and smoothly, it's a mix of seamless elbows and jointed shoulders. Cheap silicone seamless is often put over plastic "skeletons" which snap back and fight posing even though the material is otherwise soft. Some companies like Jiaou use plastic skeleton with steel joints for reinforcement but the "skin" is really easy to blemish. TBLeague uses full steel skeletons and soft easy to move articulation that then holds the pose even with heavy weapons. That said, the Ryu was TBLeague so I don't know what was going on there other than we can't confidently buy anything 1/6 without a sense of rolling the dice with way too much money.
Pinless yes, but "seamless" is a solid no, if the articulation is like this. The design looks amazing, but forget posing. I'm 1/12th-scale fan and am always mystified where the Hot Toys collectors find the space to keep all these. If you have 2 or 3 favorites, it's do-able for anyone wanting conversation pieces, but if you collect the series... whoa boy... you better have a large house with plenty of extra room(s)... *AND* a very understanding significant other...
i'd rather have figures with functional joints than seamless stuff like this. The thing is i own a hot toys batman arkham knight figure (futura knight ver.) and due to the clothing it can't pose all that well , very limited. {if i'm not wrong the hot toys batman beyond from arkham knight and batman XE suit are actually having more posability in it)
Depends on the figure but for the most part seemless vs. seeing joints for me. Figs like Bane or Wonder Woman showing bare arms, bare legs etc def seemless. For figures like Iron Man, Sipderman etc. the full body suit and or armor usually hides the joints. Alot of 1/6 scale collectors go for realism so less joints the better however there are some that want the best of both worlds so having joints on some figs if it makes sense (i.e. if seemless would limit articulation) no issue. But again really depends on the character.
Was once an owner of this hot toys venom it was one of the very few hot toys that gave me that WOW vibes the figure really awesome but mine had some small flaking at the arms
I don't own any seamless stuff but I reckon some figures definitely benefit from a seamless body. I'm working on a project myself and although it can be done using joined plastic parts, for this particular character/style a seamless body is what would suit it best. For example, that 12" seamless Ryu you just reviewed looks amazing (despite all the flaws you pointed out :D). I like what Storm is doing: use soft rubber to hide some joints and use hard plastic for limbs.
The Hot Toys Shang Chi is awesome and poses very well. It mainly comes down to the material they use. I have the Hot Toys Captain Marvel figure as well. She looks amazing and can pose pretty decently. You just have to worry about damaging the material.
I think of Hot Toys the way I think of Neca. Aesthetically they’re amazing, but they pose absolutely horrible. When you go into buying a Neca figure, you know what you’re getting into. Same with HT.
I love 1/6 scale but I prefer articulation. The Marvel Icons line is basically what I want from that scale. I have a few Hot Toys but they’re basically statues.
I have a few hot toys, and I would still prefer joints over sculpt. I will say, unless the character doesn't have sleeves or pants, the range of motion is pretty decent. There are characters, like Spider-Man, that leave more to be desired though in terms of articulation.
Honestly, I prefer to see the joints. Of course, I also appreciate if they're well hidden but they don't drive me mad either. I like to pose my figures, and leave them in a certain pose for exhibition. With the proper care, I can keep my figures in those poses, but you can't do that with Hot Toys line due the engineering and materials.. the "Skin" gets deteriorated quickly.. you have to get them back to the basic pose often. I know they're not "toys" in the classical sense but I just find no fun on that..
Not a fan of rubber overlays. Basically just begging to have your figure tear within 3 years. Also don't see the point of having an action figure without the action. Just buy a statue then. But to each their own.
I want the joints. I won't buy any figure made of rubber because the second you get it an invisible clock is ticking, one day it is going to start to disintegrate. No matter how high quality the figure is, it won't last forever.
I don't understand the negativity of some of the feedback here. Saying seamless bodies have "polluted" the hobby or calling them trash is a little harsh and in some cases objectively not true. Let people collect what they want, and be happy there are options for different consumer tastes. Just because someone doesn't display a figure in a pose doesn't mean they don't like the idea of being able to pose it if they want, the different accessories, the different materials, etc.; something you can't necessarily get with a statue (at least at a reasonable price). To others comments, my understanding is that all action figures degrade, even plastic ones (e.g., plasticizer leaching). I'm by no means an expert, so correct me if I'm wrong. With proper care, I would think these seamless bodies, cloth materials, etc. would last, however objectively the amount of care is higher than a standard plastic action figure, and is one of the reasons that I personally don't have many figures of this type. Personally, seamless bodies make me nervous, and I don't like the idea of pleather materials flaking over time. When I purchase an action figure, I personally don't want to be worried about the extra upkeep; I want to enjoy it.
I got this awhile and was disappointed for the price. It looks super nice, but the articulation is way too limited. I would have cancelled my pre-order if I knew how limited the joints were, as I would get a statue if I didn't care about articulation. I loss interest in HT after getting my first one, being spider-man 2099. I was very disappointed with it and sold it and decided to not get anymore HT since they are overpriced statues. I am a big Venom fan, so I made an exception for Venom... But again, it was a disappointment. I did pre-order the deluxe carnage just so I can have a big display and since I like carnage's design from the movie. I definitely would not have gotten either one if I had known SHF was making 1/12 versions, in which I also pre-ordered. At the least, the SHF venom makes up for all the lack of articulation of the HT; It is super nice figure and posss really well. I am looking forward to the SHF Carnage. HT venom and carnage will just be more of a basic display I guess, and I will use the SHF ones for my dyamic battle poses. I am definitely not getting anymore HT after carnage. I am pushing the joints on venom; if the skin breaks, I am just going sculpt and paint the exposed area. I did have have the arms bent in pose for a year, and didn't see any breakage. It is probably because the material is not the same as phicens. It feels more durable. Phicens started breaking after a few hours, which is why the instructions say to not put them long term dyamic poses. They are for taking photos, then putting them back into museum pose, which also sucks. I have a few phicens and plan to cover the breakage with cloth, while others will be receiving a complete body swap that is not seamless.
HOT TOYS and other seamless figures do look amazing!!! Almost rral buuuut! I hate the idea of the material these are made that can be torn apart and.... if u want em to endure, they will be displayed in museum pose.... So yeah, im ok better with articulated and cuts in regular figures like shf
I spend a lot on action figures but never really gave a damn about these seamless body figures. What's the point of an action figure that cannot pose well? Why not just buy statues if you don't care about articulation, instead of buying these half-ass articulated figures lol

Wow! These things are definitely not worth their price. These are supposed to be the tippy top shelf of action figures especially for their cost and ridiculous wait times for pre orders. With all these flaws I’m not sorry I can’t afford them.

I don't mind the joints but seamless when executed well is always welcome. I just don't want rips and tears after moderate posing over time.

The icons venom is the best venom figure to date. Basically perfect.

I think a softer plastic over body is something that should’ve been left in the early 2010’s
