It's in German. It's a very pretty song the English version isn't quite the same translation.
It's rather complex German poetry to be honest, even for someone who does understand basic German, but "Alle Menschen werden Bruder" means "all people become brothers" and that's the most important message of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony

I was born in the USA but I know and understood what they said, and I’m European.
It's an ode to human values. The great man LVB composed this despite being deaf. A true ageless masterpiece that gives goosebumps several centuries down the line. Love and joy from India.

The voice of the soprano in the latter half bring me tears for unknown reasons.
My mom is currently in the hospital after a stroke. I just decided that this is the first thing I will play to her once she is better enough to communicate. Because you cannot not have a reaction to this.

I am from India..I know a little things about western music.But music as a universal language, I love western music as well. I love beethoven a lot. I don't why it maybe due to his life background and deafness and above all his great compositions..And this Ode to Joy is fantastic among them. I see tears in somebody's eyes and I l know that feeling it's not only in one if they cry or not. That's the depth he has given to that music..Great Beethoven..and lots of love..

Although this piece has come to represent the European Union in fact its message is universal. At one point in the full symphonic version the words are ' Oh could this kiss embrace the whole world.' It is for ' alle menschen' - all mankind and that is why some of the comments here are both tragic and misguided.
Surely Andre Rieu, his orchestra and singers travel the whole world over to bring classical music with a popular touch to millions of people. So let's not spoil that with quarrelsome comments.
