@som Slovaak...sorry, what do you exactly mean by this? You advise not to translate at all?
@som Slovaak...ah okay, I had a feeling this was what you meant. Because I am a victim 😢 I tried learning Tagalog and translated word by word. But now I’m confused with the verb conjugations which is complex. I’m slowly getting my head around it but it’s hard.
@som Slovaak You need translation at some point, if you're learning your first words how do you know what they mean without any translation? You're not supposed to translate in your mind while you're talking, that could become a "handicap" but using bidirectional translation as a tool to learn new words is something else.
You should do a “how I study in a day” to see your style.

Luca, I would like to know what you think of the importance of learning or mastering our native language. I think we want too much from the foreign languages and forget our own. I personally think my language the best of all ;) Abraços de um brasileiro! Te amamos hehe!
@@guilhermedaselva4046 I remember he said once that we have to use our mother tongue as well or else it would become rustic.
I can relate to that because since I started to learn foreign languages I avoided using my native language at all, now I work with people who only speak my native language so that makes my task a little bit difficult since all things I learned (still learning) were in my L3 that is English, and translating through my L2 that is French, so my native language (Spanish) was not relevant, but now I have some trouble lol
so I have to translate all I have learnt into my mother tongue in order for people to understand me, and be aware that some English/French words are difficult to translate into other languages without losing its accuracy, so you have to use like 4 words to only explain one lol

the other point related with the importance of knowing our native language, well if you do know your native language well, or at least how it works(syntax) , so it will make your foreign language learning a lot easier, because you know how to identify patterns ;)

Be Yourself Im from singapore :)) we don’t exactly have a native language but our most common language is english and many of us take a mother tongue. Im bilingual and can speak chinese as well ^^

During quarantine I decided to learn Japanese, it's my first time ever trying to learn a language by myself. I live in Switzerland, in the region where I am we speak French, but I learned the basics of German, Italian and English at school. I can now speak English pretty easily (I forgot everything about German, I can still understand Italian even if it's harder for me to speak it) but I haven't any knowledge in Asian languages and I'm so excited to learn more about it!
I speak fluent Japanese and I'm learning French!! I wish we could help each other to learn the language

Hiii I’m japanese and can speak Japanese and English. This video motivates me to learn Spanish again (I failed once haha). It might be hard for you at first to start Asian languages but I hope you can master them 🌸
as someone learning languages too, i would like to ask: WHEN do you consider yourself FLUENT in the language?
i wondered that too, and i also wondered when do they consider themselve as being able to speak a language. I mean B2 is nessecary to be able to speak a language and C2 is fluent.
For me, fluent is when you can understand and reply to the person you're speaking to.

Well, to me, there's a lot of perspectives. If you can maintain a conversation with native speakers with ease, understand 95% plus, you're fluent. To me, C1 is already fluent and C2 is more like a master level.
If you won't spend a lot of time speaking in the target language, there's no real need to fully master it, y know?
I try to maintain my language levels on C1 and if I need to travel or something like that, I study for a couple of weeks to upgrade again to C2 and I'm good.
@@WaltRBuck I typed in 'person', but for some reason my keyboard (SwiftKey) put in 'pets'. Yeah, it worked as a joke, but actually I prefer the original message of mine. 😂
My native language is Tagalog and I think that it is very difficult to learn this language because the sentence structures are kind of confusing. But, I think it will be easy for you and can be quite a challenge! Please learn it, I love watching your videos and I think hearing you speak in Tagalog will be supeeer awesome! 🇵🇭
It must be difficult because she pronounces Tagalog differently than a native English speaker would.

^ these two points are important from day one
Then the output part i.e speaking and writing.
- i usually get into the language by listening to it through tv movies or meeting a native speaker or traveling when i can but mostly tv Thats when i get used to the sound of the language
- Then i use teach yourself book to learn we have that in common ;) i go through it, i tried it for non asian languages and it works!
Then i want to practice speaking and using and making sentences thats when i use italki sessions with tutors and i gain more vocab by talking or i get explanation for difficult concepts in the book...
thats what works for me, bidirectional translation i heard it from online course by luca (it was great thank you) i still not used it but i will try in the future... thanks great video!
I just started learning korean yesterday! Im focusing right now on how to read the alphabet and how to pronounce it properly. Im only 18 so,ill just enjoy the process. Not gonna rush it.

Going to start a video series on this very topic with my class via RUclips. I am SO encouraged by people with such a passion and genuine joy for learning languages. So envious! Appreciate these videos; very encouraging!
Great ways of learning. I took Spanish in middle school, a friend got me into Korean dramas, and I'm teaching myself Thai. I have a photographic memory when it comes to movies and shows, so watching foreign films, TV, and RUclips videos (with subtitles when needed), and listening to podcasts, help me the best. I'll also use app as a more fun and relaxing way to learn as well. I love listening to music in the language too.
I've been learning a language for six months now and I can honestly say that I have been improving rapidly. I'm terrible at multi-tasking so I can only focus on a single aspect at a time, which kind of makes it into a strength. At the beginning, I hone in on absorbing as much auditory input as I can so I have a feel of the sounds that native speakers make, whilst simultaneously incorporating speaking as much as possible. At the moment, I'm slowly creeping into a transition phase where I integrate some reading into my process of learning, but that's going to take some time.

Its amazing how everyone learns a little bit differently than the next person. I totally get what you were saying at @12:30 minutes. For me I learn phrases better that I can learn a list of individual words. I also learn the language script in the beginning but I don't study writing in the beginning stages. I only practice speaking, listening and reading off of sight in the language. In the beginning if I start off with writing and grammar I get confused and it slows my progress.
please make a video specifying how exactly you study, the example of reading both languages and trying to learn new vocabulary was nice

I personally think that it's logical to start a language at around New Year or on your birthday. That makes sense as these dates can serve as some sort of a countdown system and the date where you analyze all that you've managed to complete and set new goals for the upcoming year (and your personal year if count from your BD).
Good to know, since I'm just now starting a few days after my birthday^^

Writing is challenging, even for native speakers. Tip: copy examples of good writing (copywork). It might seem boring, but it helps. Also, 'advice' is uncountable. Cheers

I was surprised also when he said that he would learn two languages at once because I watched a video a few years ago in wich he explained how bad idea it's to do that so he stopped me to try doing it but yeah maybe it's what you said he is now at a learning level that he just can do it. I learn Danish and Swedish together and this is so easy because these 2 languages have a lot in common.

I'm Italian, I'm fluent in English and it's almost two years I'm self-studying Japanese, and now I'm trying to learn Korean too (I've ordered a book and then I found a language exchange partner). One day, I'd like to learn French, Spanish and German, (maybe...) Swedish and even Mandarin. It'd be a dream came true. How do you organize your study each day/week for each language?

Sou brasileiro e me identifiquei muito com esses métodos de aprendizado de idiomas. Eu aprendi a falar grego sozinho ouvindo rádios em online streaming durante o dia todo para me acostumar com o som do idioma, com isso adquiri gosto pela música e pela cultura pop mais contemporânea. Isso me fez traduzir palavra por palavra de todas as músicas que eu mais gostava. Ao ouvir a música sabendo o significado, o idioma passou a fazer sentido na minha mente, e aos poucos passei a compreender diálogos e a conseguir falar o idioma. Consegui aprender a falar grego, inglês, alemão desta maneira.

I agree with you. I like to feel the language first, be immersed. Once I feel comfortable with the language, I learn the spelling. It just feels more natural. This video is great. Luca is such a source of inspiration.

The most frustrating thing is I just can’t retain what I’ve learned that’s bloody suck
This is supposed to happen. If you can retain 10% of the new words you learn that’s great. Just keep repeating high frequency words
Actually, forgetting is the trick to finally retaining words!!! When you forget a word and you come across it again, the chances of you forgetting it again drops significantly each time. So, be happy to forget words!!

This is indeed a very useful video. Please produce more such kind of videos in the future. By the way, I prefer your way of learning languages since it seems quicker and makes people speak a new language ASAP.
This is great advice I also think it's important to remember to...just start! I'll spend 2 months trying to perfect the best way of learning a language from scratch when that time would probably have been better spent just studying the language and working out what works best for me as I go.

Hi, I'm French and I started learning Thai a few months ago. This video really motivates me. I think choosing only one resource to focus on in the beginning is important because otherwise you can get overwhelmed.

Lao is also very very similar to Thai. YOu can learn it after your Thai skills are good. Allow me a simple piece of advice: TRy to master the tones FiRST ! don't pick up words and words until you can master the tones. Otherwise you'll have serious problems later.

Wow that's cool!! I have been learning chinese for a year and a half now. I also find the witing a lil hard. I focus on the speaking of the language. I find chinese quite interesting and I love the language. I can only encourage you to learn it. Why do you want to learn the language by the way?
Be Yourself im a chinese ，to be honest writing is much more harder than speaking in chinese. dont worry about it， Most of Chinese can not write some kind of complicated Chinese characters either, because Chinese characters have evolved over thousands of years. It's good enough to be able to communicate

Hi, I hope you're doing well.
You said that you immerse yourself in the target environment and you try to catch as many inputs as you can.
I d like to know what is the tip you use to recall all what you learn automatically when it's needed so you sound native?
How do you train your brain to build up sentences quickly and effortlessly?
PI : when you're actually in a country where the target language is not regularly used and consequently you don't afford to meet someone to speak with.
I'm asking you this because I feel that basically there is an unbalance between the outputs (speaking &writing) and if it's possible to regulate this disorder by your own.

I didn't know there are people who actually use the word “senpai” in a daily conversation.
For a Japanese ? Yes
In schools and workplaces the word is used constantly. No matter how close friends two people get if one is their senior they’ll continuing using the term senpai. My bf is Japanese and literally his best friend still calls him senpai in like every sentence because my bf was his senior in their club at school

It comes from a very big interest..passionate about..you try,gaining little by little..you love it..you acknowledge your little step..you feel more interest..you enjoy it..by the time you will get addict to it..Stick with it....you read a lot off materials..you find the pattern and you feel them..and practice every day..this is the way i got my guitar skill

I have a Question, how did you learn Japanese Specifically? I mean did you study the Writing systems first (Hiragana, Kanji etc.)??? Then Vocab memorization? I have hard time learning languages and I really wanted to Learn Nihongo 😅
Hey buddy, I know how to speak nihongo but I read like baby, I learned hiragana and katakana but I don't know many kanjis. I have many friends in the same situation as me, we talk and understand well but we don't read or write. The best way is learning exchange, there are many website where you can meet a native Japanese who want learn other languages, so, get a book (online) to learn Japanese conversation, share with the Japanese friend , and study with a reference book. You do the same with him, teach your native language with reference book. You going to learn very fast, believe me.

I was just curious - is it okay to learn a handful of languages simultaneously? Or do you have to do only one language at a time? I really want to learn Korean and Japanese at the same time, but I think it's gonna be hard to do so😅
I think it's better that you focus on one at least until you achieve a comfortable level in that language. I find starting 2 languages from a beginner level at the same time, very difficult.

Man! Such an honor to be able to receive helpful tips for us language learners. I must admit, I am so bent on perfecting a languages that I am learning that I don’t know how to add additional languages to learn. I passed the DALF C2 for French in 2019 in France and have been concurrently leaning German and Thai. French has been so hard to maintain since I left France! Just passed the German Goethe Prüfung B2 about a month ago. My Thai is like upper beginner. Debating whether adding a new language would be too much at the moment or if it’s better to get an advanced level in German at least before adding another language.
I am learning Russian and aside from using the internet I would like to have a hands on tool. Where and what books would be good for me to buy ? Thank you 🙏 😊 ☺️

The Assimil Russian course is decent. If you roughly apply Luca's bi-translational method to that, you'll certainly have gotten your teeth into the language.

keep going! I can read and write the korean alphabet but im not fluent in forming some sentences in korean. I know sum basics bc of watching kdramas. I remember cheating on a learn korean app but end up learning the alphabet lmaooooo keep going

actually hangul, the korean writing system, as been regarded as one of the easiest scripts to learn! so start there! i recomend using korean in 90 days ( i think thats what its called) to learn the letters because it helps you remember them in very creative ways

The hangul is easy. I recommend you that you watch the group's performances, always in the corner there is a karaoke and for example if Jennie of BlackPink say "a" and the karaoke starts with an "아" I knew that "아" means "a" xd Like this I learned the hangul.

How do you guys with more than 7 languages, earn money?
It takes a lot of time
most of them work on activities that are related or where they use the languages they speak.
for example:
language coach
language tutor
do business with several countries
tourism
and so on.
@@ichbinhier355 if so, they shouldn't have time either. I'm coaching for the last 3 years - it eats a lot of time but brings even less money than a regular job

also there is the option of making online courses, so you build a community around a topic, and then you sell them courses.

Thanks for the video! I’ve been subscribed for a while, but there were only 2 videos on the channel. I’m glad to see more!
I follow a lot of the same methods as you guys. I definitely agree with the statement that very few people reach fluency in the classroom. I start by learning the sounds of the language and the sentence structure. I’ll use any similarities between the target language and languages I already know to help me remember the target language. My goal isn’t to learn all the words in the dictionary, it’s more to learn a good base. Then I learn more in the areas of my life I use most (work, hobbies, etc.). Then I use the good base as building blocks to learn more of the language. Another important thing is to start talking with NATIVE SPEAKERS as soon as possible.
I know 3 languages and this year I’ll be studying Spanish. If you want to learn Tagalog I’m willing to help you. 🙂
