Movie released in 1988. Manga started in 1982. (ended 1990). Akira still looks more groundbreaking than anything made today. I firmly believe Akira is one of the most important works of the modern era.

The movie that gave us the most iconic (and often imitated) move in animation, the Bike Slide.
FUN FACT: 7.16.1988, the day Tokyo gets obliterated, is also the day this movie hit theaters in Japan.

Lore-wise Akira as manga series goes deeper than that.
Movie was pretty faithful to the source (which is no surprise, given that director IS the author of the manga), only thing that he kind of wrap up story for the movie.
In manga Tetsuo awakening was much more catastrophic event, and it is just a halfway of overall story.

As impressive as Akira is in the audiovisual department, what's most impressive to me now is how deep and nuanced its themes are.

This was a lot of fun, really nice how much u guys enjoyed it. You mentioned porco rosso, thats a really nice more niche one in ghibli's catalogue, super fun. my favorite ghibli film is The Tale of Princess Kaguya. if you just saw some screenshots of what the film looked like im sure youd be immediately sold--one of the most beautiful animated productions ever made. Also it is a retelling of an ancient classic japanese story and is very touching.

Late, but thought I'd chime in anyway: this, like many other OVAs/anime films was an exercise for animation artists more than anything else. The story doesn't make much sense, nor is it very qualified/thought out, because it's secondary to the exercise: this is multiple, multiple volumes of manga put into 90 minutes of animation. The slide from the opening sequence, the matte painting/masking work as they travel through the city (multiple backgrounds moving at different speeds, etc), the light streaking, cel work for ultra detailed characters on static backgrounds (or multiple, with depth of field applied differently for each, etc -- think Tetsuo flying up to the orbital weapon platform, pulling from the surface to form his new arm; notice the purposeful movements), the general fluidity of all of these things put together as well as mastering the inbetweens on facial animations/speaking is what this is all about. And then the soundscape (music, voice, and sound effects) marries all of it together.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the original 80’s dialogue. I believe this is the 90’s dub. It doesn’t sound nearly as good as the original cut. Even the music isn’t quite the same. I also believe it’s also a re-recording of the original score.

Mediocre people from families with big pockets run the creative work now, as they did with everything else. Don´t expect something as good as this in a long long time.
Money rules and has an anemic awful imagination.
