It’s honestly strange looking back just how much this game revived the Spider-Man multiverse idea, sure before that we had the 90’s animated series, but this game went all in on the premise which prompted Slott’s Spider-Verse, which prompted the comics Spider-verse, which Prompted Into the Spider-verse, which prompted Spider-Man No way home. Just like Madam Web says, it’s a Web of Destiny, guided by every choice made.
I think there were also a couple of spidey-verse episodes in the ultimate cartoon. Where in some universes the style of the show changed while in that universe
@@feliperestrepo9140 Correct. Stan’s wife voiced Madame Webb in the 90’s animated series. She even takes Spidey to meet Stan and calls him a “special person” (Stan in turn is very intrigued by her).
Also the way Kraven got the tablet piece is hilarious. Spider-Man: so Kraven, how’d you snag that fragment anyway? Kraven: I’m not completely ignorant in the ways of modern man my friend, I secured it on the internet. Spider-Man: you’re joking. Kraven: no I had the winning bid
Funny enough they actually were working on a remaster of Edge of Time, and apparantly had plans for a Shattered Dimensions remaster as well, but then Activision lost the Spider-Man license. Due to this the remaster was cancelled.
If a remaster would happen i believe the only new changes would be add new levels for each spidy as well as replace 2099 voice actor with the person who played him in spiderman unlimited
10-year-old me loved ultimate Spider-Man season 3 for this very reason. Getting introduced to Madame web for the first time and meeting all of the different Spider-Man characters was such a mind-blowing experience that pretty much expose me to the concept of the multiverse theory, mentally preparing me for things like Rick and Morty, and The flash on the CW just so I could be ready for Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War before anyone else. As well as CW's Legends of tomorrow and Doctor Who so that way I could be prepared for Loki on Disney plus and then Far From Home leading into No Way Home. What a time to be human and alive, the world is finally waking up to what reality is. 5D consciousness has never been more attainable
Considering the fact that I've been in love with All things Spider-Man ever since the age of five, I'd say that I've dedicated enough of my life to marvel and now Disney to where I don't care if I pre-ordered IMAX movie tickets for no way home because it's going to be the best birthday present I've ever had, we don't get a lot of things to care about but truly nothing comes close to the enjoyment and fulfillment I get from watching things as mind-blowing and awe-inspiring as into the spider-verse. If I had followed my dream upon immediately graduating high school at the age of 18 and pursued an education at full sail University, I could have been animating big Blockbuster Hollywood movies by this point in my life. I turn 23 on December 18th and I honestly never thought I would make it this far. I'm going to get blazed before I walk into the theater because I have reserved seating so I get to show up half an hour early and get high off of Delta 8 in my car because it's finally legal everywhere and I have never had more of a reason to be alive. Tripping on shrooms and other psychedelics is a beautiful thing my friends, I believe the world would be a better place if everyone would be able to just let go every now and again. Expand your mind and focus on what's important.

@@dandywaysofliving Let me mention something to add to this: Think about when you dream. I like to think that any dream relevant to real life in a truly realistic way I could perceive as an alternate timeline, and any abstract dream I think of could be a different dimension. A lot to think about.
The Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon also did its own Spiderverse in its 3rd and 4th seasons, brought a lot of iconic Spider characters to the screen for the first time way before the film did. In fact, the Spider-Man from this cartoon was also in the main Spiderverse event, he teamed up with the Original comics Miles Morales under the Original Spider-Man’s orders, to find more recruits starting with the one from Earth-67.
@@ghostspider2056 Also funnily enough Comic Miles had no Patience for Animated Ultimate Spider man and pretty much told him off. Was probably cathartic for people that didn't like the show.
Watching this made me realize I really miss the Era of mid-budget games. It feels like all that comes out these days are either indie games or massive Triple-A games. As fantastic as Spider-Man PS4 is, there's a certain charm to games like Shattered Dimensions where the plot is just "Beat all the villains and collect the macguffins!"
To be fair, Shattered Dimensions must've had a pretty stacked budget given the amount of high caliber voice actors they bought in for this game. I do miss these kind of games though, ones that are just an absolute blast to play and replay over and over. Shattered Dimensions has a great speedrunning scene because of that.
Yeah, I get wym. Spiderman PS4/Remastered and Spiderman: Miles Morales were both fantastic, the best Spiderman games to date if I do say so myself, bit there is a certain charm to games like Shattered Dimensions that you just don't get that often.
I get exactly what you mean. I just miss an era like the ps2 one where you had tons of games to choose from with beloved characters(from movies, series, comics etc). Those games honestly had so much heart and you could find a bunch of hidden gems if you searched enough. Games that were unpolished but were so much FUN, that you couldnt rly predict what you were gonna play unless you actually excpirienced them. That s what s missing from today s games. Most games today are the same action openworld semirpg(ubisoft style) where they just copy paste and reskin the same activities and missions to different games. As a publishing company start giving the developers their own timeframe and creative control, and start taking RISKS, let them make new ips with their own fresh ideas and trust me most of us long time gamers will appreciate and show the appropriate support.
i forgot how innovative this game was, we need a SERIOUS return to level based games like this. With todays tech and devs a more focused approach like this would make for a great game.
and with spiderman exposed to MCU fans yeah i figure every spiderman title would be big success like insomniac's spiderman it's a good day to live as spidey fans to see our hero being appreciated even more by the world
Neil ( New animated series VA) = Amazing Josh ( Spectacular Series VA) = Ultimate Dan (Amazing Friends VA) = 2099 Christopher (90’s Animated Series) = Noir
i actually only found out this year that all 4 voice actors were spidey legends like, how could i possibly miss the fact that Spider-man Noir is voiced by 90s version, its like two of my favourite things coming together, and it only took me 11 years to find out
@@thisbubblygoodness7611 I could hear 90’s and Spectacular off the bat but I forgot Neil was actually a spiderman VA or a series that didn’t live very long. Amazing friends felt familiar but didnt stick to me during some of his line segments

Fun fact when madame web gives noir the ability to web swing he says "the webs normally just splatter everywhere" It's actually cannon in the comics that noir can't web swing, he can still shoot web but it's never been strong enough to allow him to traverse new York. So instead he relies more on his agility and speed to get around. It's small but it's great attention to detail from the developers.
@@andyvargas7142 In the opening cutscene of the first 2099 boss battle (against Hopgoblin) Miguel refers to the Spider Sense as: "This new "spider-sense" is a trip... Either I'm not used to it yet, or one of the fragments is...closing in on me?" which is when Hopgoblin attacks him. So they did actually acknowledge that Miguel didn't have the spider-sense before, and only gained it for the events of the game (probably from Madam Web).
rip reject lust, embrace God remember kids, don't take the Lord's name in vain nor mock God Also, we have evidence for biblical events, if anyone is interested
While not the first crossover between multiple Spider-Men (the Animated series did that.) This is probably the most important piece of Spider-Man media ever. Because not only did its creation lead into the Spider-Verse comics, a story arc in Ultimate Spider-Man, but also to the excellent Into the Spider-Verse and No Way Home. This game changed Spider-Man forever. The only thing I wish the game did better was have all of the Spider-Men interact with each other more and make the gameplay more complex.
I like the impact this game had, but I always felt like it was more obscure compared to other Spider-Verse stories, and that makes me sad. I don’t see people talk about it/play it too much, which honestly kinda sucks, because it’s a really good game.
Also, the two Deadpool clones might be in reference to the two voices that comprise Deadpool's conscience that he always hears in the comics. One is crazy and speaks with a shrill and hyper voice, and the other is calmer and mature, and speaks with a deeper, calmer voice.
@@alwaysnerdyretros what do u think of spidey and kitty? I heard he broke up with mj, then got with kitty, then back with mj, and cheating on Kitty with mj, but dosent break up with either of them. That's actually really sweet. I loved the Noir stages they absolutely nailed the atmosphere and vibe they were going for in those and it made me a big fan of Spider-Man Noir.
Same Zach! When I was young those sections going up against the Vulture scared the crap outta me, but I loved the stealth and sneaking up on the goons from the shadows. One of my favorite games of all time no doubt! Hope you're doing well by the way, wherever you are and whenever you read this!
the thing i really like about 2099’s inverted free fall with scorpion is that it’s canon to him, since his version of spider sense gives him 360 degree vision
@@WRILLI4M Not wanting him to be OP is the reason he doesn't have Spidey Sense. His most OP power though is his venom which can instantly paralyze anything he bites. It would be cool to see a video game give Miguel that as an option, maybe as a power you have to charge, and the enemies you bite stay still for a bit so you can wail on them or escape them.
God, this and Web of Shadows just hold a special place, right in my heart. Also, every time I talk about this game I always got to mention the Easter egg I discovered by accident on Deadpool's level. If you pause the screen Deadpool taunts you, the player, for pausing the game. I knew nothing about Deadpool at the time too so it was a complete shock to me.
@cablecow15 Rougelikes covers all games with randomized level mechanics. I get the hate on DC and whatever, but there's plenty of good rougelikes out there.
iirc, if you don’t do anything for a while (just putting the controller down, not moving Spider-Man) Deadpool also comments as well. Really shows how much went into this game.
I love how they used a bunch of different classic Spiderman voice actors, but fit their specific voice styles to versions that would fit them best. Like, Noir's deeper, grittier voice works so good from Barnes, or Gilvezan's more mature voice for 2099.
They also included the other voice actor for Deadpool in the games. While Nolan North voices the primary *real* Deadpool, one of the "fans" is the voice actor from, I believe, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1. The guy at 42:30. Nice little touch which probably went unnoticed by a lot of people.
You know, after hearing both Josh Keaton and Yuri Lowenthal as Spider-Man, it feels kinda odd to hear Neil Patrick Harris as Spider-Man in this game. It’s like voiceover whiplash essentially
I wish they would port/ remaster this game. This is my third favorite spider-man game in general next to Marvels Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man. I also hope we get more single player, linear games in the future. I know we probably won't with spider-man for a good while, but this and Guardians proved you don't need a big empty world to move in for the sake of saying you're "open world" and a super hero game.
They planned on remastering the game in order to boost hype for Spider-Man (2018) but then activision lost the rights to make Spider-Man games. Apparently it would have been a better looking version of the original game and they had actually finished with the UI design before it got “cancelled”. They still have the rights to THEIR Spider-Man games, but because of that we may never see this gem of a game make a comeback unless backwards compatibility is enabled.
My biggest wish is that Insomniac would develop a spiderverse game like shattered dimensions, or maybe even something like edge of time. It's probably not ever gonna happen though
One random thing I really liked about this game is the Easter egg in Sandman's final fight, where you can locate Juggernaut's helmet amongst the debris. You can even complete a Web challenge by zipping to it.
15:35 I love that they used James Arnold Taylor, who voiced Harry, that guy from the daily bugle, and a few goons in spectacular spider man. They also got the guy who voices hammerhead in spectacular spider man to reprise his role. Really cool
Yes I recognized Hammerhead's voice from spectacular Spider-Man! I loved that little touch! Did you also recognize the voice of Spectacular Spider-Man's Green Goblin playing the Hobgoblin?
I loved this game so much, and the Noir levels especially. This game was my introduction to the Noir and 2099 universes, and they've become some of my favorite since then. The only thing that ever really bugged (ha) me, is Spider-Man's posture. His head is jutted out so far forward from his neck in every interaction, it just doesn't look comfortable.
You Marjorie had a very blessed introduction to Spider-Man if Shattered Dimensions was your introduction. It didn't go for the scale of an open world, this is the game that put both the character and his rogues first and it's such a treat to play.
God hearing Stan Lee narrate really set the tone I dont even know if i knew who he was back then I just knew the atmosphere was so SO SO VERY Marvel and his voice drove it home
this game is criminally underrated. i love how this game shows us that we dont need a big open world sandbox for a good spiderman game. each level was carefully crafted and made us still hav the full spiderman experience.
7:37 I think you're correct about this being Jameson's son. You can just barely make out the blue parts on his torso, as well as see the bump near his shoulder for that red ring thing around his armpit. It honestly looks like you found the exact panel they took him from!
This is one of my favorite games of all time. Not because it's a masterpiece but because I'm a HUGE comic book fan and this game hits all the right notes for me. And it's amazing how this isn't just another open world game, love it. 🤘🔥
The villain introduction cutscenes make a neat choice to not use mouth movement during dialogue and cutting between various striking slow motion frames while still being animated. Feels like a moving comic.
Watched this at random, and so glad I did. I never expected so much justice to be done to this game, it's more often brushed off and I'm glad you instead gave the time to both analyze it for its strengths and shortcomings, as well as point out its relevancy as a Spider-Man title with the various references and callbacks. I'd love to see you also cover Edge of Time. It's not as good as this title, but I think still memorable in its effort and I never would have thought anyone could give it a fair lookover before seeing this video. Whether you do or not, thank you so much for this!
Thank you! That means a lot to me 😃 I do plan on circling back to Edge of Time at some point. I haven’t quite figured out when yet though. I never played it so I’m really curious to give it a try
@@alwaysnerdyretros Thanks! I think it's best to expect it to be more of a 6/10 on your scale. I love it, but in the same way someone loves a crappy car. @@Lightdasher360 interesting. I’ll keep my expectations low lol. I’ve been hearing mixed things about it from other comments, so that sounds about right
@@Lightdasher360 I definitely agree! It focuses WAY more on character development (since there's time for it because of 2 spideys instead of 4). It falls flat in other ways but I still remember alot of the story moments and how they did a good job making it a darker game!
One of the best parts of Shattered Dimensions is how each Spider-Man has a different play style. My favorite is definitely Noir since he has the whole stealth gimmick to him.
Well there are plans to make a Spiderman noir movie. I think it was revealed by sony 1-2 months ago. But considering how many spiderman projects they are handling right now(venom 3, madam web movie, kraven the hunter movie and recently revealed spiderwoman movie as well) I think it's still in the early planning stages. Hopefully it'll not get cancelled and if made has good story and writing.
Honestly a very underrated Spidey game, also looking back at it, it's likely that this game had some influence in Ultimate Spider-Man's multi-verse episodes since 1 set of them specifically has spidey (alongside a couple of alt. versions, 3 of which actually appeared in this game) tracking down the "pieces of a broken magical artifact", it just makes sense
Still my favorite Spider-Man game! So many villains, different heros to use, different styles, great dialog. It's incredible and I hope that one day we can get a remaster/port to newer consoles!
WOS (Web of Shadows) is good, but sadly there isn't really much side missions [that I remember] and once you beat the game you have no choice but to restart the whole game.
@@bkproductions383 I was always more into the web swinging and combat than story in open world spider man games. The storyline was still pretty damn good, but it certainly could've used some side missions.

Nice, I was looking forward to when you were would cover this one. Very underrated game. The open world Spider man games are great but this game shows you don’t need to do that to make a good spider man game.
Totally agree! This struck a good balance of linear while keeping the levels open enough to explore. I’d definitely be open to another Spider-Man game like this one
Juggernaut appearance is actually a reference to amazing spider man issues 229 and 230 in the 2 part story nothing can stop the juggernaut where spider man fights him
Who else loves Hammerhead's line at the beginning of his level "Then stop gawking and start throwing lead!" It just feels like something that an old-timey Hammerhead would say in the 1930's, and his voice actor just brings the character to life.
I remember in the scorpion mission there’s a glitchy spot you can fall through that lets you skip a nice half of the mission and I would challenge myself to see how long i would take to finish the mission. This got me nostalgic lol
Every Spider-Man voice actor from every cartoon up to that point. And the first time we got to hear Miguel! Plus, Megatron was Mysterio. This was amazing. Spectacular, even! Dare I say that this game was Web of?
I love how this game’s main villain was Mysterio. The whole premise just fits him so well. I feel like it contributed quite a bit to him being one of my favorite Spider-Man villains, only behind Venom (even though he’s not really a villain anymore), Carnage, and Doc Ock.
I'd agree but Mysterio's goals in this game are hilariously base for a villain who's generally pretty creative. His objective basically amounts to... I want power.
The clown face rooms are solved by looking for the face that has one eye rapidly twitching side to side and the other twitching up and down. Absolute amazing game for young and old, not a punishing game and easy to grasp quickly. Also I screamed from the rooftops that Mysterio was in front and centre, how things have moved since 🙂👏🏻👏🏻
Extensive variety in bosses, enemies, mechanics and abilities; this game did something that most moder games cannot. Each mission feels new and refreshing, something that a certain recent Avengers game extremely lacks.
@@EthanBradburyVlogs even if Insomniac does make a sequel or remaster of this game or something similar in structure, it will be exclusive to PlayStation. I just wish Sony wasn’t so greedy with exclusives
What I love the most about this game AND Edge of Time (PLEASE do a retrospective for EoT btw): Is the voice acting; both games provide GREAT headcanons for each Spider-Man and their comic-book adventures. Example: THE Spider-Man 2099 from the comics now sounds like Christopher Daniel Barnes. Or How THE Peter Parker from Earth-616 sounds like Josh Keaton.
@@justincruz5720 The story’s boring, the environments get boring after 10 minutes with nothing new for the remaining 4 hours of gameplay and both Spider-Men play the same way, leading to repetitive gameplay throughout the whole thing.
I feel like your consistent reference to the game's similarities between Spider-Man Noir and Batman: Arkham Asylum's gameplay detracts from it somewhat -- for some clarity, the way games are developed it would have been impossible for one studio to have ripped from another. They may be incredibly similar, but at the time Arkham Asylum released, Shattered Dimensions would have been well into its testing phase and well-past a state where changes dramatic enough to purposefully bring elements from Batman into the game would be almost impossible without releasing a buggy, unfinished mess.
Okay, I was with you until I saw the Mysterio section. Having not played this game and seeing the earlier sections with Spider Man Noir, I said to myself "Wow, it does remind me a lot of Arkham Asylum but I could see it being plausible that these two companies came to convergent stealth systems" after seeing your comment. As soon as I saw the Mysterio level on balance with the other similarities, that stretched the my suspension of disbelief out the window. I mean look at it, come on! That's beyond the point of coincidence and after checking into it, both games were released one year apart. While I doubt they built those segments entirely from the ground up after seeing Arkham Asylum, the influence and tweaks are obviously apparent! With one year apart from release dates, there would be enough time to modify existing assets to be similar without completing breaking the game.
@@RandomAllen gee, two stealthy super heroes with similar gameplay elements? Gotta be ripping them off. It's definitely not as if they only had a few options for stealthy kaijuman enemy gameplay.
The Arkham combat similarities are way stronger in Amazing Spider-Man and newer games. The combat in this game is clearly built upon elements from Web of Shadows.
@@darknessknows1235 He never even said it was a rip off. He just said it was clear that the design of the level was *inspired* by certain aspects of Arkham Asylum. Get a grip dude
I played the crap out of this game when I was younger, and I loved it. I didn’t actually know it inspired future Spider-Verse stuff. Neat. Never was too good at those Noir levels, though.
I’m glad someone is acknowledging this game,I never played it sadly but I watched the story as a kid and it was amazing fun and taught me about the different versions of Spider-Man and villains which were awesome. This was basically into the spider-verse first.
Spider-man Shattered Dimensions was hands down the BEST game ever I loved, the graphics, the gameplay, combative techniques, in fact I loved EVERYTHING about this game Spider-man will always be my #1
This is one of my favorite Spider games. Had so much hope for the sequel using more alternate spidermans but sadly it turned out very mediocre. Also you have to touch on SpiderMan Friend or Foe one day.
I might be wrong but I don't think Miguel was accidentally exposed to the spider-man test. The test had a very very high casualty rate and he was exposed to it in an effort to kill him. They wanted him dead and silenced when he was speaking out against the research since I believe he was in fact on the project himself. If I am wrong then someone correct me.
He spoke against the test and Alchemax used an genetic drug to blackmail him into staying. He tried to use the test machine to reverse his genetic structure into what it used to be but a jealous colleague messed it up, resulting spider-genes being spliced into his own
I'm so glad you finally made time to play this game! For me, Shattered Dimensions is a masterpiece of a Spider-Man experience. And clinic in how to properly handle fan service in video games. I'm so thankful that the stars aligned to be able to make this happen back 2010. It's too bad Activision only cared about dollars signs and forced a rushed sequel out the way they did. I actually like Edge of Time (And that Josh Keaton & Christopher Daniel Barnes came back!), but I would have loved to see what Beenox could have done if they'd been given two years or more to develop it further. I think the poorer reviews for this game are representative of the classic bandwagoning that happens to all licensed comic book games. The general audience and gaming press are typically overly critical of these sorts of titles before release and I think they oftentimes carry that baggage into their review process as well. I'm not saying bad licensed games never happen, but I think it's usually the comic book MOVIE games that are bad. Not the games that are properly based on comic book IP's, and that often times get much longer development cycles. There's a reason, that games like the Batman Arkham Series, Ultimate Alliance, Shattered Dimensions, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and even Lego Marvel Super Heroes are so fantastic in comparison to games like Sega's Thor, 2K's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer or Spider-Man 3. I think one of the reason's Spider-Man 2 was so fondly remembered even though it's a movie game is because the mechanics of that game are still continuing iterations of what Neversoft built back in 2000. Try walling crawling with Spider-Man down to ground level. That transitional flip that he does onto the ground is Neversoft's design. And Activision kept using it all the way through to Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. Just handing pre-existing assets from one development team to another. You did a REALLY great job breaking this game down as you always do. There are a couple voice notes that I just want to mention for anyone reading. As you said, there was a lot to mention in that regard. But these are elements that also stick out to me. Or that I already knew because I play every one of these things when they release (Working through Guardians right now in fact!) and I've watched every cartoon iteration through thick and thin. 42:15 I appreciated John Kassir voicing the Deadpool fanboys in this game. The torch may have been passed, but it was nice to have the subtle acknowledgement that was probably just an inside joke for the development team. 1:17:33 Josh Keaton was also Harry/New Goblin in Spider-Man Friend or Foe. It's just one of those things that's stuck with me since the reveal trailer for that game. 1:21:23 Steve Blum voicing Hobgoblin was a nice reprisal of the Goblin voice he had just used on Spectacular Spider-Man when he voiced Green Goblin. In the lead up to the release of this game, we knew who all of the Spider-Men were voiced by, but Blum returning for Goblin was a nice surprise to me when I first played the game and that satisfaction has has stuck with me. Love these videos, Nerdy! I happen to be in the camp who thinks Spider-Man 2 was amazing until being eclipsed the very next year by Ultimate Spider-Man. In my opinion, Ultimate Spider-Man was the best open-world Spider-Man game to beat prior to Insomniac's take on the character. It's a wonderful game that unfortunately seems to be too often overlooked. I guess that's the price of not being connected to a majorly successful motion picture. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about Spider-Man 2!
Am I the only one who noticed that Miguel O'hara's theme in across the spiderverse actually has a slight leimotiff to the song that was shown in this video near the end for the 2099 dimension? Miguel's song in that segment of the video has a slowed down version of the now iconic Miguel theme from across the spiderverse, I might be tripping, but I think it's so cool that they plaid homage to the origins of the character like that
Man I loved this game. Never beat it, my Wii bricked itself before I could. Thanks for this video. I can't believe I never realized that Deadpool was the Ultimate version until seeing this.
for the sandman fight when he splits into three, you dose him with water and then throw debris at him to take heatlh away faster instead of fighting hand combat
I don't know if his origin's been changed, but Miguel wasn't merely exposed to Spider-Man DNA. Instead, spider DNA was grafted onto his own in an effort to kill him.
Congrats on surpassing a million views, Always Nerdy. I've always been curious whether there'd a be a time people really looked back an appreciate this game for what it tried to do. With the quality of a review like this, I'm can easily see your subscriber count going up as well man.
many people complain about how Miguel was adapted in this game, but the way he acts is totally faithful for the character. Especialy considering he´s arc dedicated of how being Spider-Man was turning his "Alter Ego" into someone real, he did say himself of how different he unconsciously acted when he downs the mask, overrall, he truly is Miguel in his run of the comics.

At time 51:46, you are correct about the "twitchingness", he (Spider-Man Noir) even remarks that one of them looks funny, indicating something is different about the door that opens, than the ones that return back to the fun house. Also, thank you for this retrospective, as it really felt great to revisit a childhood game,
I would love it if they did a remaster to go alongside No Way Home and cash in on the hype and maybe introduce fans who haven't played the game to it, such a favorite of mine alongside Marvel's Spider-Man/Miles Morales and Web of Shadows
The DS version of this game is surprisingly good. Sure, there's no deadpool, ultimate universe, or hobgoblin. But what is still there is a really cool metroidvania style game that had me playing it so much.
One of my favourite things is that all the versions of spider man are voiced by previous actors who have played him a personal favourite is 90's serise spider man voicing noir his voice just perfectly fits him so well
I wish game creators would use the spider stealth more. I was surprised how well it worked and now I just want one that incorporates it more freely into the gameplay. Most games these days have it in there but it's so far back on the shelf you can actually go the entire game without it. I really want a spiderman Arkham that relies on these aspects equally
This game will always be, hands-down, my favorite Marvel game of all time on console, I initially bought it pre-used in 2016 from Gamestop and have replayed it a lot of times on the Xbox 360, still keeping a copy for when I want to replay it in the future. Not only does it have multiverse elements to it and uses my favorite hero Spiderman, it has different game modes for each Spiderman and interactive maps unlike any other. To start with, it has a fire intro theme, which fits the premise of the game and has 4 changing screens of each Spiderman iteration in their home city. On top of that, it has silhouettes which keep the villain hidden but also give a clue as to who the Spiderman iterations will be fighting in their timelines, from Deadpool's giveaway sword pack to Sandman's spiked ball hand. There are a total of 4 villains for each arc of the storyline, one from each Spiderman timeline and 3 from each timeline by the end of the game, creating 12 villains total. Each villain has a unique fighting style, from Electro's shock attacks and dam scene where he absorbs the Tablet piece and becomes a giant, to Vulture who hides in the darkness and attacks with molotov cocktails. Each villain is also defeated in a unique way, from Scorpion being beaten by breaking a glass roof to collapse a Public eye ship on him to Goblin being defeated by attacking his spine, his weak spot. The main villain of the game is Mysterio, whose goal is to acquire the Tablet of Order and Chaos, which further fits the Spiderverse element after pieces of it are scattered around different Spiderman timelines, bringing an unlikely group of Spiderman together as protagonists. Madame Web from the comics leads them, ironically she also leads the Spiderman iterations in the Spiderverse comics. The game starts with tutorials for each Spiderman iteration and their unique ways of playing, which clearly explain how to use them and how to create basic combos. To build on that, there is a web similar to a skill tree which allows the Spiderman iterations to unlock new moves and combos. There is also a combo menu that shows possible combos for each Spiderman iteration, on top of a Bonus menu: which has amazing concept art of each aspect of the game and unlockable costumes. Personally, my favorite costumes for each are: Scarlet Spider (Amazing Spiderman), Original Concept (Noir), Silver Armor (2099), Red and Blue (Symbiote Spiderman). There is also a special costume when the game was purchased in Japan called Japanese Alternate Costume (Amazing Spiderman), and Cosmic Spiderman iterations for each of the 4 Spiderman iterations, with Cosmic Symbiote Spiderman (Symbiote Spiderman) being my favorite: these are unlocked after defeating Mysterio. The villains are also unique to their timelines, with Hammerhead and Vulture tying into both Goblin's gang and Noir's backstory, while Scorpion and Hobgoblin are both immersed in the 2099 storyline. Some unlikely villains are also introduced in some levels: such as the appearance of the Public Eye in the 2099 storyline, the appearance of S.H.I.E.L.D robots in the Carnage level, and the appearance of Silver Sable and her Wild Pack in the Juggernaut level. There are also backstories for anyone who may have not read the comics in the Bonus menu, with first appearances and basic origin stories for all 4 Spiderman iterations, all villains, all henchmen, and all side villains. There are also trophies of each character in the game in the Bonus menu, which are 3D and fully interactive. For a game that came out in 2010 ish, this game is a masterpiece for its time, with only Web of Shadows coming close to competing with it. I'm glad I chose this over Deadpool at Gamestop in 2016, although Deadpool is still a great game. My favorite parts of the gameplay will always be the stealth takedowns style of Noir, Spiderman 2099's helikick move and Acceleration vision ability, Symbiote Spiderman's rage meter and mode, the Deadpool level, the Carnage level, the Scorpion level, and the Noir part for the Mysterio level. Noir and 2099 are definitely my favorite iterations to be introduced, with both making it into the Spiderverse movie that Sony released and both having very unique gameplay styles.
This was one of my fav Spider-Man games. I also wish there was an entire game in the Noir universe. The stealth aspect was genius. I liked how you could risk a closeup approach, but the game essentially forces you to stay in the shadows.
Man I hadn't played this game in ages. Spiderman Noir was my favorite of the 4 and that's the dude that convinced me to get that game as a kid. My Uncle was already a Batman fan so when he was showing off some of the Arkham stuff I showed him Spiderman Noir and he really liked how he looked. Then in the movie when I learned he was voiced by NIcholas Cage I was even more in love with that spiderman.

I also love that the oldest voice of Spidey voiced Spider-man from the future.

I think it's still in the early planning stages. Hopefully it'll not get cancelled and if made has good story and writing.
I was not expecting this but I’m super psyched you’re covering my first(and still one of my most favorite) spidey game on console back then.
42:14
I CANNOT BELIEVE I didn't notice this on my first playthrough; but that's the voice of Deadpool from Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2
im so glad people are finally finding this gem of a game. seriously up to standards with todays releases.
Personally I love Web of Shadows, especially the symboite ending and now I know how to beat Hammerhead after all years, can't wait to replay.
Web of shadows was pretty good. You felt overwhelmed at times
My favorite part is how the black suit is canon as it feels so powerful and good you start using more than the red and blue.
I remember this being just a cool game that my mom bought for me when I was little. I didn’t think it was responsible for reigniting the alternate Spiderman plot lines as well as Into the Spider-verse, one of my favorite films. And now it’s responsible for No Way Home.
59:38
Spidey: "I know EXACTLY what to do!" *Proceeds to give Mysterio a Concussion*
Me: I mean...he can't use the tablet if he has a brain hemorrhage. So props
I played this game as a teenager and oh boy I just could not get enough of it, i didn't realize the importance the story had for the future of Spiderman but this sure made a Spider-fan, so much that this game was my first platinum, good old times.
I wish this game was updated for the PS4/PS5. It's one of my favorites. Plus having it narrated by Stan Lee is a classic.
Don’t skip over the fact that Steve Blum was Green Goblin in Spectacular Spider-Man
Nice, I was looking forward to when you were would cover this one. Very underrated game. The open world Spider man games are great but this game shows you don’t need to do that to make a good spider man game.
Totally agree! This struck a good balance of linear while keeping the levels open enough to explore. I’d definitely be open to another Spider-Man game like this one
Juggernaut appearance is actually a reference to amazing spider man issues 229 and 230 in the 2 part story nothing can stop the juggernaut where spider man fights him
Not many know that Juggy, Dr. Doom, Deadpool, Punisher and Arcade are recurring guest villains for Spider-Man.
@@alissa6 I feel like a lot of people know about Spidey and Deadpool.
Who else loves Hammerhead's line at the beginning of his level "Then stop gawking and start throwing lead!" It just feels like something that an old-timey Hammerhead would say in the 1930's, and his voice actor just brings the character to life.
Agreed. Vo definitely conveyed that ol timey lingo.
I think the First Person Fights are so cool. Being able to see what Spider-Man is Seeing first hand is a whole different experience.
Say what you will about the game but Spider-Man: Friend or Foe was my childhood and one of the main introductions of Spider-Man for me.
Same. (the ds game was terrible though. The lock picking minigame was hard.)
same here
Same. It was my introduction to quite a few Spider-Man characters, like The Prowler and the New Goblin.
How sad
I remember in the scorpion mission there’s a glitchy spot you can fall through that lets you skip a nice half of the mission and I would challenge myself to see how long i would take to finish the mission. This got me nostalgic lol
Oh really? Do you remember the fastest time you had?
@@alwaysnerdyretros With that skip I use to do, the mission for me would take normally around 8:47 minutes to skip a nice chunk of it.
Every Spider-Man voice actor from every cartoon up to that point. And the first time we got to hear Miguel! Plus, Megatron was Mysterio. This was amazing. Spectacular, even! Dare I say that this game was Web of?
We didnt get Rino Romano PS1 games and Spider-Man Unlimited.
I knew that "Yesss" sounded familiar! It was David Kaye all along!
@@VicEntity ironically it was the "no" that made me zone in on him
I love how this game’s main villain was Mysterio.
I remember this game, while not the best spidey game it’s a solid addition experience
Please shut up. We will never have fun concepts like this with Imsomniac
@@EthanBradburyVlogs what’s your problem?
@@carlisle6831 my apologies. I've made a lapse in judgment. Ignore what i said
@@carlisle6831 Not the best, maybe, but I'd say definitely among the best.
@@EthanBradburyVlogs even if Insomniac does make a sequel or remaster of this game or something similar in structure, it will be exclusive to PlayStation. I just wish Sony wasn’t so greedy with exclusives
What I love the most about this game AND Edge of Time (PLEASE do a retrospective for EoT btw):
Is the voice acting; both games provide GREAT headcanons for each Spider-Man and their comic-book adventures. Example: THE Spider-Man 2099 from the comics now sounds like Christopher Daniel Barnes. Or How THE Peter Parker from Earth-616 sounds like Josh Keaton.
Yes
Edge of Time sucked though.
@@craygroup How so?
@@justincruz5720 The story’s boring, the environments get boring after 10 minutes with nothing new for the remaining 4 hours of gameplay and both Spider-Men play the same way, leading to repetitive gameplay throughout the whole thing.
@@craygroup You know, I could be wrong, but from what I remember the story, was pretty good.
Steve Blum also voices the Green Goblin in the Spectacular Spider-Man series - very neat to see the casting had such significance!
I love that the Hobglobin is voiced by the original voice actor of Goblin/Norman Osborn in The Spectacular Spiderman animated series!
Idk much about game design but maybe Beenox were that fast and good? Your point is good tho
Okay, I was with you until I saw the Mysterio section. Having not played this game and seeing the earlier sections with Spider Man Noir, I said to myself "Wow, it does remind me a lot of Arkham Asylum but I could see it being plausible
that these two companies came to convergent stealth systems" after seeing your comment.
In The age of remakes and remaster this definitely could get its own reiteration
a remaster for this game and web of shadows would be GODLY
This game still looks really good. Web of Shadows would benefit from a remaster much more imo
I loved this game. The wave part on the deadpool mission always made me feel like I was actually running for my life
I played the crap out of this game when I was younger, and I loved it. I didn’t actually know it inspired future Spider-Verse stuff. Neat.
Never was too good at those Noir levels, though.
dude i was the absolute worst with noir and a killing machine with ultimate lmfaoooooo
I’m glad someone is acknowledging this game,I never played it sadly but I watched the story as a kid and it was amazing fun and taught me about the different versions of Spider-Man and villains which were awesome. This was basically into the spider-verse first.
Spider-man Shattered Dimensions was hands down the BEST game ever
I loved, the graphics, the gameplay, combative techniques, in fact I loved EVERYTHING about this game
Spider-man will always be my #1
This is one of my favorite Spider games. Had so much hope for the sequel using more alternate spidermans but sadly it turned out very mediocre.
Also you have to touch on SpiderMan Friend or Foe one day.
Yes I definitely plan on getting to friend or foe! It’s just sitting on my shelf waiting lol
Edge of time was disappointing in certain aspects but I find it to be better than Shattered dimensions in other aspects.
@@idfkimaclown Only played SD, so what are the pros & cons compared to Edge of Time?
@@ViltrumiteIsRite99 Storywise, I find Edge Of Time to be better.
Character designs are also good with Spidey’s suit getting more and more damaged by the end of the game.
I love how much The Vulture sounds like Gollum in this game.
Spiderman's humor is so good and on point in the games, something that the movies haven't been able to do it, yet
Thank you for looking back at this absolute childhood gem, fantastic video and never got stale throughout the entire 1.5 hours
Thank you for taking the time to comment! That means a lot to me 😃
I might be wrong but I don't think Miguel was accidentally exposed to the spider-man test.
He tried to use the test machine to reverse his genetic structure into what it used to be but a jealous colleague messed it up, resulting spider-genes being spliced into his own
@@Ihavethetouch Ahhh alright. I was partially right to a degree.
Basically what juha said if u want go onto comicstorians channel he just released a recap of the 1st 3 chapters of 2099, tells u everything
Like Enter Electro more or less
It's amazing how often the Spider-man team up from the 1994 cartoon is forgotten as the first real "Spider-verse" crossover. Still, awesome review. ^^
I don't know if his origin's been changed, but Miguel wasn't merely exposed to Spider-Man DNA. Instead, spider DNA was grafted onto his own in an effort to kill him.
Wasn't it actually that alchemax drugged him to ensure compliance, but he grafted the dna to get rid if it
Congrats on surpassing a million views, Always Nerdy. I've always been curious whether there'd a be a time people really looked back an appreciate this game for what it tried to do. With the quality of a review like this, I'm can easily see your subscriber count going up as well man.
Thank you! It’s really exciting to see that people enjoy revisiting these older games as much as I do :)
many people complain about how Miguel was adapted in this game, but the way he acts is totally faithful for the character. Especialy considering he´s arc dedicated of how being Spider-Man was turning his "Alter Ego" into someone real, he did say himself of how different he unconsciously acted when he downs the mask, overrall, he truly is Miguel in his run of the comics.
I was under the impression Spider-Man 2099 was super serious.
@@archivist_13 in the beginning trough the middle in his og run, he was. But thx to some personal things, he learned how to be a pretty good guy. Some people don't like it, but I see it how being a hero changes you for the better
I used to play this game religiously when I was little. Still holds a special place in my heart.
45:23 "While in motion, Juggernaut is an immovable object". THat line made my brain hurt.
This game was so ahead of its time. Honestly brings back so many memories
Spider-man Ps4 has pretty good stealth mechanics and missions

This is my second favourite spider-man game, would love to see another non free roam spider-man game with a good story like this.
Congrats, you managed to release a video the time the new trailer for Spider Man movie is released)
Yes that was a lucky surprise lol
A Spider-Man noir game would be awesome
Man I hadn't played this game in ages. Spiderman Noir was my favorite of the 4 and that's the dude that convinced me to get that game as a kid. My Uncle was already a Batman fan so when he was showing off some of the Arkham stuff I showed him Spiderman Noir and he really liked how he looked. Then in the movie when I learned he was voiced by NIcholas Cage I was even more in love with that spiderman.
