You're the teacher I've been looking for all my life. You breathe life into learning. This is honestly the best piano improve tutorial I've ever seen. Thank you
This is a perfect approach to teach music for children, adults newcomers in music, intrumentists coming for other instruments... A perfect approach to open emotion, intention, sensible relashioship with music... I'm art-therapist, and i can say, this exactly is what you are doing. Thanks for this :)
This is genius at work. This is how one should be introduced to music instead of the traditional way with lots of theory and scales which frightens most people away. Pictures of birds, sunshine, pretty blue skies, clouds etc. are way much more fun than lines and spaces.
Dear Oliver, I have been "playing with the birds and clouds" and it was incredible time....I felt like a real pianist. I would like to join the thousand persons that thinks that apart of your incredible technique, you have a special talent for teaching, soft nice and absolutely delicate. Congratulations you have a new follower. Thanks for your efforts and dedication, warm regards. Ed
I am so glad I came back and finished this video. Arrogantly, I assumed I was too advanced for this lesson, then finished the video and learned more than I have in a year.
Your serene approach has a frequency bandwidth that is beyond this planet's magnetic field and resonance. Natural universe, osculation, dimensional light and sound wave integration dialectical and sequential. A pulse of energy, expanding and condensing at the same time, an infinite fractal of reflections. Thank you stranger.
I find when I play on the black keys, it comes across less 'birds and clouds' and more 'gospel shout'. I had no idea where you were going when you started drawing, but when I realized I got very excited. Your unique and well thought-out way of teaching is so helpful. And when you talk and play, it's meditative and very calming. I could watch you all day, and in fact, I have been.
I've been practicing piano for a month and a half now and your channel has brought me a sense of relief!!! It was overwhelming to sit at the keys and not understand what to do with them. You brought the fun and the peace to my learning! Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Same here! I’m picking up piano again in my 50s, and this is inspiring. I wonder how things might have turned out differently if my teacher from my youth had made music fun, instead of a chore.
Oliver is the man!!! I have seen other people try to sell their lesson and you do it in honor and for the love of the music! Sharing this and all your videos with everyone I know!
You are the Bob Ross of piano. Thank you for your pleasent, fun & silly lessons. Like others have said, "you are the instructor I've always needed!!" Thank you, thank you!
Magnificient video, full of meaning, emotion and insight into what music and jazz in particular is all about. A long time ago I went to the Village Vanguard jazz club in downtown Manhatten, New York one night. A few minutes later Sonny Rollins walked in, perhaps to listen to the music, perhaps to meet a friend or whatever, he was not on the program to play that night. The audience recognised him and wanted him to play, but Sonny didn't really want to and said that he didn't have his sax with him and had never played with the jazz group playing that night (I forgot which group). The jazz group said that there were plenty of saxaphones available to choose from and the audience continued to plead that he should play, so Sonny finnaly relented. He climbed on to the stage, picked up a sax, played a few notes to check it out, had a brief dialogue with the group and they played 3 tunes together. It sounded like they had been playing together for years. I was sitting at the bar and Sonny walked over and said hello to me, he was real friendly. I offered him a drink which he accepted and said " Mr Rollins (I was a very young man at the time and didn't dare to call him Sonny) I don't know where the music you just played was created , whether in heaven or hell, but that's where I would like to go." Sonny burst out laughing and tapping me on the chest replied "Man we all have music in us, but for it to come out you really have to want it" How true, and that's exactly what you said. Thanks for your wonderful video lesson and many others like it that you have posted.
I was teary-eyed by how much you made me realize I love music wholeheartedly and deeply. I don’t care how long it takes to learn, may it be present with me for the rest of my life. I'm not scared to try anymore. thank you, professor.
You are some kind of Angel !! Teaching us the real value of art !! These should apply in life itself !! So Honest , Inspirational, Wisdom that we just imagine far beyond the stars !! I wish all my Best for you and the people around you !! I can't wait to study all your videos !! Thanks my man !!
I'm so glad that I can help you a little on your Musical road! And thank you so much for your generous voluntary “super thanks” donation - you help keep me going for sure!!! I'm very grateful :) :) :) Best regards from Oliver
Thank you for this lesson. I enjoyed it. I just bought a Yamaha P-125 and am exploring piano for the first time (solo/RUclips videos). Having a good time playing and practicing. No hurry, but it's quality time, even at my current level. Thanks for all your videos. I'll work my way up eventually. Cheers.
Oliver, you're a genius! Your storytelling method is brilliant. Thank you! Whenever I'm feeling nervous before playing the piano, I come back to this style and it always helps me to relax.
This is absolutely brilliant, Oliver! I got my keyboard out of its box just to try that. It felt really good. Thanks for your knowledge and generosity!
This approach quickly opens the doors to really enjoying playing and improvising. To play classical properly it takes many years of practice and learning, and that 's great. But I really like to play and improvise with ideas like Oliver shares here. It sounds great. Thanks again Oliver. You can say thanks in another way too folks. ;)
What an absolutely wonderful video! I play several instruments...Guitar, drums, congas, bongos, bass guitar, but I have never pushed myself to fully learn the piano. When I dabble on my keyboard, I find the black keys make the instrument far less intimidating, and even enjoyable, for me. I've actually recorded original songs using multiple instruments and while playing the black keys of my keyboard. I've recorded some beautiful songs that I'm proud of and each have far exceeded anything I expected to record while using my keyboard. I love this video because it validates, at least for me, that what I have been doing is truly playing and creating. And for this extremely important validation, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, sir.
I'm a music teacher for kids from 3 to 6 years old... Thanks for your video it gave me a lot of ideas of games to do with my little students. Thank u again.
This one lesson completely blew my mind! After trying various online courses (which were more like torture camps) this opened the door to my prison and instantly connected me to the music inside. This is *absolutely* the best music lesson ever. Oliver, you are a (genuine ) genius. Before anyone even thinks of playing an instrument, they should watch this first. Thank you so much!
All right! My man Oliver Prehn! I love every New Jazz lesson so far. I recently bought a yamaha digital piano and your lessons have made playing and learning so fun!
Although I am a "semi-self-taught" musician for more than 10 years I will make this my daily exercise before going to work. Because in this way I can express my moods / emotions etc. without any theoretical restrictions to worry about. THIS IS AWESOME!!!
Hi Oliver - greetings from Houston, TX. Awesome! ... Thank you for this very inspirational and motivating video. Now you definitively have me hooked on learning to play piano with your lessons.
It's really nice to have made this video for beginners. All the first lessons should start like this. This is the key to make you want. I will take inspiration for my daughters who play saxophone and saxhorn. Nice job, once again, Mr. Oliver. See you soon !
Hi and thanks a lot 😊 And yes, the first music lesson should be about Music and not theory and note letters. And we should have fun! Fun leads to motivation and motivation makes us wanna learn even more Music...
I really share the same opinion. Here in France it is a true doctrine. Too many music schools apply to stuff the brain of music theory and scores students. I am pleased to see that the horizons are opening, we can see, especially through the Internet, new ways of approaching music. And Newjazz is the perfect example. Really, congratulations to your wonderful enterprise. And long live the musical revolution!
it's kind of an idol → the suffering... a paradigm?... an addiction? ...it seems we confuse "motivated-effort" with suffering... or service/"work" with suffering... so, we create a world upside down...
Just the first of 53 videos, and feels like xmas already. Thank you so much for sharing, this channel is really one of a kind. The best wishes (and gratitude) from Argentina!
Best piano video on RUclips. This is what music should be about. Not about trying to immitate perfectly, note by note, what others created in the past. That is just silly. That's like reducing painting to trying to recreate Velázquez and Rembrandt pictures brushtroke by brushtroke.
Amazing, just what I have been looking for. It took me months to learn saxophone and it’s been a while trying to get laying piano. Adding a synth to my keyboard made it even better and blew my mind. Thanks.
amazing, as a beginner , i play those 5keys for fun and found these 5 sound wonderful in any order i play, now truly amazed to find your video , the magic power of music! thanks so much !
Wow, this piano lesson let me fly away into another universe. This ist the best lesson on RUclips and explains the fundamental meaning of playing music by the way. Thanks very much for this amazing masterpiece!
Hi and thanks :) Fun makes Motivation and Motivation makes Music ;) And thank you so much for your generous voluntary “super thanks” donation - you help keep me going for sure!!! I'm very grateful :) :) :) Best regards from Oliver
This is such a smart and motivating way to introduce beginners to improvisation! Instant sense of achievement. Thank you so much Oliver, greetings from Germany
Perfect place to start this old engine, Oliver-sensei. Cause even though these left-side pushrods have long ago gone wasted, the right-side will be how I move upand do2n the key. Five fingers can make music... given a great teacher, and this I am so fortunate to have... I took you in earnest about writing a black-key master piece, and it's coming along nicely--about 50% completed... but no worries, Sensei. The piece is written for an audience of one. Me. The creative assembly of musical notation, etc etc. seems to be what powers my motivation. I like the feeling. And just like these lessons, It's magic, for me.
Oliver, oh my dear God, this is simply amazing! Just amazing! I'm a beginner, don't know where to start. I do own a few synthesizers for making fun with improvising, but your videos give me a insatiable hunger to improvise more. Your calm voice, the warm atmosphere, simple an good music brought with passion. Thanks!!
Luckily I found this chenel, learning music is realy hard and sometimes make frustation when it comes to read sheet music now I can enjoy my learning, how to play my piano freedom , this video give me a huge motivation enjoying my journey to play piano Thank you
Heya, usually im not commenting anything but man, you are the chanell i was looking for like last 2 years. Im really inspired to be a pianist and now im getting one finally and this video gave me a lot of motivation to make up my daily routine practice with casual improvisations. I would love to see more like this "tutorialish" videos, keep up the good work and thank you a lot!
Thank you so much for your generous voluntary “super thanks” donation - you help keep me going for sure!!! I'm very grateful :) :) :) Best regards from Oliver
I'm amazed by your teaching technique and the spirit you bring with you in your ability to share a lesson. After this video, I feel much more comfortable in my practice. I had a great time playing with the idea of drawing a musical composition and felt uplifted by your calm and positive energy. Thank you for your hard work on these lessons. I feel humbled that you are willing to offer this knowledge to the world. I will be following you for more inspiration and your good vibes. I am extremely grateful. Thanks for sharing. Connor
I love this video, you can also add in the white keys to either side of the sets of 3 black keys. That usually sounds pretty nice for some reason. I love that you are teaching this as something for inspiration.
Thank you for this wonderful inspiration! I am a music teacher at school and find this a realy amazing way to get a grip on music. I will try something similar with my 7th graders. :)
I’ve never been able to really express myself through the piano before now. Because of you, I just played an improv that fully represents what I am feeling. Thank you!
This idea has come just at the right time. I was looking for a way to help a 60 year old student of mine who has just begun learning the piano and for some reason has a paralyzing fear of black keys :). This should get her going!! Thanks, Oliver, donation is on its way!
the piece at the end reminds me of Pink Floyd process to make Echoes, and some other pieces they made. Great work, genius, maybe I can make a similar piece and tell the story to my kids while playing the piano. That would be so awesome.
Hey Oliver, another great lesson! Love it ! I very much agree with the way you approach music. It is not as much about "the genre" as it is about the "feeling". This is the message that I try to bring trough my music as well. My last album "Back to Nature" is exactly about this feeling. Keep up the good job!
You're the teacher I've been looking for all my life. You breathe life into learning. This is honestly the best piano improve tutorial I've ever seen. Thank you

The Bob Ross of music. Your words and music are filtered through love and passion. Thanks!
Bob Ross of piano tutorials, loving it
I was going to say the same thing
- How to play Jazz?
- Just sit down and play Jazz :)
Was just thinking that. Put some happy little trees on the black keys folks.
I find when I play on the black keys, it comes across less 'birds and clouds' and more 'gospel shout'. Same here! I’m picking up piano again in my 50s, and this is inspiring. I wonder how things might have turned out differently if my teacher from my youth had made music fun, instead of a chore.

This very video is the foundation of all the confidence I have at the piano.
Oliver, you're a genius! Your storytelling method is brilliant. Thank you! Whenever I'm feeling nervous before playing the piano, I come back to this style and it always helps me to relax.

Thanks Oliver for what you do.
I am amazed!!! This guy is a great piano teacher!!!!
I love this video, you can also add in the white keys to either side of the sets of 3 black keys. That usually sounds pretty nice for some reason. I love that you are teaching this as something for inspiration.
the new medium of Jazz thank you.
you are an amazing teacher
What a wonderful lesson, this is helping me to see music composition in a refreshing and inspiring way.
Thank you!
