Honestly DROGAS WAVE has the best rapping I’ve ever heard on an album it’s absolutely insane how good he is, I listened to it while reading the Genius annotations and it’s mind blowing.
@deez nuts this made me laugh way harder than it should. I kinda want Anthony to explain his issue with Lupe one day, because everything about his musical taste tells me he should really dig his music, but instead he acts like he doesn’t even exist. He only talks about his records when his fanbase literally forces him to. I remember a live stream were he was listing artists who worked with Kanye… Chat: LUPE LUPE LUPE Anthony: Pusha, Kid Cudy, Kendrick…
Y'all are forgetting that Lupe was Black balled by the industry. It took Anonymous to force Atlantic to let him release music. And at that point Lupe was just trying to make songs to complete his album obligation so he could get off his contract. He even said "I wasn't going to give them anything I put my soul in". That's why Lupe's mainstream career tanked.
Big Facts even though Lupe came into the game with 1st and 15th his Partner/Manager Chill got sentenced to 44 yrs in prison as his career was taking off. Lupe had to fend for himself in the industry. Kendrick came into the game with the covering of Top Dawg and TDE. They protected Kendrick from dealing with some of the pitfalls and issues that Lupe had to deal with in the industry. Not to say that I'm using that as slight against Kendrick because I'm glad he had that. If he didn't have the team or the support that he has he probably wouldn't have been as big as he is.
Not only that but Lupe doesn't care about money and came into the rap game with a boatload of it. So everything they tried to sell to him he wasn't buying.
Yup..he talks about this and the influence that the industry tries to filter in and change the artist's music in order to abide by industry norms in the song "glory". Dope track by the way.
Most artists, especially conscious artists dont have the chance to have the career Kendrick had. People just assume lupe fell off cause of accessible music or something but he had tons of label battles that kemdrick never had. Taking songs off the radio, label refusing to put out albums, telling him they wont promote him, getting black listed for his political opinions, giving songs that would have blew him up even more to other artists. list goes on. Imagine if kendrick was on a label that felt like to pimp a butterfly needs more edm instrumentals because Kendrick has crossover appeal, and refused to release it to the point fans protested. Kendrick would have fell off. He is on a label with people looking out for him, who makes sure he eats, and makes sure him and his music can breathe.
The Cool definitely had a radio sound to it. “Paris, Tokyo” “Superstar” “Hi-Definition” “Hip-Hop Saved My Life” “Fighters” all were radio “friendly” sounding
@@SolidSnake240 that was an anthem for anyone whoever picked up a pen and pad. Lupes the cool album really was pretty deep. Even hi definition had some meaning in it.

It’ll be like that Eminem and Kendrick track where there don’t rap for the sake of throwing bars and showing skill and instead attack a concept no one would expect. Like they rapped about women, I enjoyed the track, but when I saw the track list for the Marshall Mather LP 2, I was assuming those 2 were about to duke it out on a record. Nah... I was got
Tetsuo and Youth Lyrically and Sonically is crazy man . Like Lyrically Kendrick can’t touch that . Far as TPAB that type of consciousness is also deep as fuck ... I still gotta give it to Lupe though
Just because Lupe puts some crazy complex rhyme schemes together doesn’t mean he a better lyricist, listen to Mural, half the shit he says don’t even makes sense he just rhyming for the sake of rhyming. Kendrick is a better lyricist, he paints stories better, his message is louder too.
David Awonaike the punchlines and pictures he pains in word form on mural are crazy man. It’s complex , it’s possible if you don’t get it that the rhyme scheme went over your head or maybe that type of rhyming isn’t your cup of tea . I guess not everyone wants to decipher the raps. Again why Kendrick is more popular but nothing wrong with that either way I guess
djwarzone1 Eminem can do wordplay freestyles and then sit and write more technical similes and metaphors. It’s not that special. It’s about painting pictures with those words in depth.
The Cool was massively underrated, excluding a few songs his concepts and storytelling are second to none. And when given the scope to flex away from record label bullshit he’s on another level hence tetsuo and youth which is a masterpiece
Drogas wave too was crazy. Lupe has an amazing discography not only musically but there's so much lyrical content to dive into. His hiccups were just the albums he made where Atlantic had a big input on what they wanted. Other than that, dude has one of the best discographies to me.
They forgot how many different flows Lupe has displayed over the years. He has switched flows on a single song. Both Kendrick and Lupe are good at flow versatility.
Love the DEHH Conversations, and to me they demonstrate your biggest strength as a channel. 'Reaction' style videos have their place on RUclips, but you stand out by offering something I don't see from other Hip-Hop focused channels - insightful and entertaining discussions by people who love the artform.
Even though I agree that kendrick makes more accessible music, I have to give lupe his props. Cause a lot of hip hop fans keep "dumb it down" relevant to this day
There's alot of skill in simplifying complex topics... I think kendrick excels in this... Kendricks not "simple" at all but he does a good job of meeting his listeners halfway.... Lupe is extremely complex almost to his own detriment
lil Artman X you hit the nail on the coffin. Reading this entire comment section and both fans just handicap the HELL out of both artists that it’s actually fucking insane. I’m a Kendrick fan bro but I realized he was a mortal man too when he decided to tell a fan to not say the lyric to a hype song 🤦♂️
Anyone questioning Lupes talent and lyricism needs to listen to songs like WAV files, King Nas and Sun God Sam from his last album. As a matter of fact just listen to the whole Drogas Wave album.
Lupe has worked with Ab-Soul several times. He loves the whole TDE camp. People know the truth about Lupe vs. Kendrick Lamar. Y’all (as in the people) need to stop trying to make this a beef. That’s it. Lupe got it. That’s respect. Kendrick is dope too but y’all get albums and rapping confused.
@Blank do you think Harry Potter is superior to Ulysses? After all, the concepts of Harry Potter are literally magical and out of this world, whereas Ulysses just tells the story of a day in Dublin.
@@HStalhane what are you trying say? Which rapper is Joyce in this comparison. I think lupe and Kendrick are more interesting than JK Rowling to be honest.
I think with the whole "delivery being a part of lyricism" debate that Rod brought up, I think that delivery should be taken into account when judging the overall MC, but not something as specific as lyricism that has to do specifically with words. That's why I think Lupe is a better lyricist, but Kendrick is a better overall MC.
I dont get what lyricism is anymore based on what people are saying. It seems clear that when people say someone is a lyricist theyre talkin about bars. People are saying things like provoking emotion, story telling, relatability etc and i dont think those are things that go into what makes a person a wordsmith
Wouldn't you say the ability to tell a story factors into it as well? I think Kendrick has a slight edge in that regard. Lupe is more dense and metaphorical but I'd argue Kendrick is more varied and has the storytelling edge. They're both amazing artists.
It's hard being a Lupe fan go to Harvard to be a Lupe Stan. I'm not saying that I'm harder It's just harder when it's in Lupe's hand. Welcome Nigga Lupe Land.
I'm a Lupe Stan but most of Lupe's songs and albums go over my head. Lupe is one of those rappers you literally have to listen to multiple times AND go to rap genius to get his genius. It's crazy and how ahead of his time he is. Lupe all day man there's no question.
As an artist, these are the types of discussions that I really appreciate from the DEHH community (i.e. the hosts & those of us who are subscribers/viewers). Even though I’m not the one being reviewed; I’m always learning from channels like DEHH’s - which helps me hone my craft, even more, refining my skill set. I also appreciate that you’re not strictly basing one’s level of ‘success’ off of records sold, alone. Dope conversation, Fellas!
As a k-Dot Stan ,I have to say Lupe has said everything that Kendrick has said but in a more dynamic and complex manner which requires a lot of time to analyse the Lyricism.Thats one of the reasons Lupe hasn't gotten big on a mainstream level coz he's too complicated .
Been a fan of lupe since (Food & liquor) album. The song (real) is still one of my favorite song till this day. My niggas thought he was trash and never understood why i listen to him everyday. Man is a genius💯

And I love that channels like this exist🐧🐧
There are a few things that none of them mentioned pertaining to Lupe. First of all, Lupe's mixtapes like 'Farenheit' and 'Enemy of the State' have some of the hottest tracks of all time. His one off, 'unreleased' singles/freestyles are crazy as well. "Free Chilly Freestyle", "You, Me, Him, Her", "Ignorant". These are a few of the best lyrical freestyles ever released. To only make mention of his albums is to do him a great diservice. Also, just his sheer ability to hit you with a triple entendre that recalls a line from earlier in the song, while tying into an overarching theme is just unprecedented. I've listened to Lupe for 15 years and still find refrences and additional layers of an Entendre that astound me. To truly understand his songs you have to study history, film, cartoons, fashion, literature; the list goes on. He will pronounce a word such that it will sound like two different words, where both of them work in context but have totally different meanings. It's superhuman. Lupe is, hands down, the greatest lyricist of all time. I don't think it is even close.
I think something important to point out on the accessible songs tip. When Lupe was making accessible songs, he did it in his nitch. Were his accessible songs crazy lyrical? No, not really. But they were crazy CONCEPTUALLY. And that's really Lupe's bag. Superstar was part of a concept album talking about going to heaven and with a video where the streets were personified as a hustler with an arm that turned to bones when the lights flashed on them... That was a SINGLE! Lol and not just for the vid, it tied into the actual lyrics and album which was heavily promoted. Kendrick's bag is that he raps weird, lyrically and really well. Before he blew up, that was his bag as well. When he makes accessible songs, that's still his thing. So there's a difference in even how they approach "accessible" songs. Lupe has said that being crazy at rapping, isn't necessarily what separates him from the pack. It's his concepts that he puts the most pride in.
@@blkjohnnybravo3506 I know lol Hence my point. When I say "conceptual" I don't just mean the overall concept of the song. His bars are also abstract and conceptual. That's Lupe himself talks about his raps and his strengths. That song is a PERFECT example lol
Love this channel man. Everytime I hear your conversations I feel like I can fit right in to being a part of it. Not just because of the respect and appreciation I have towards hip-hop like you guys all do but the natural and unforced chemistry you guys create.
Kendrick's advantage is he's got a great team and label support (TDE/Aftermath/Interscope). He's got Punch and Top guiding his releases. Lupe spent about half of his career beefing with Atlantic, and his manager locked up after FnL.
I personally wouldn't ever include delivery, flow, cadence, or anything like that when talking about lyricism. All you need is a lyric sheet to judge lyricism in my opinion.
Not true. Pick any successful lyrical emcee from Rakim to Eminem and you'll see that delivery, flow and cadence is a major component of separating the gifted from the talented....
@@willieboyland3180 Yeah, when evaluating an MC top to bottom, of course. But delivery has nothing to do with LYRICISM. I'm not saying all of those don't matter. Just they don't factor into a discussion of lyricism. Obviously a rapper is gonna be shit if they rap like a robot with no emotions, even if they have amazing lyrics. But I can still say they have amazing or top tier lyricism even if they're ability to rap those lines are shit.
@lendra2010 Poetry and rapping are two totally different approaches fam. Take any lyrical rapper, write down his lyrics on a piece of paper and give it to any random person that can read past a third grade level and see if you think those lyrics are amazing or trash? You gotta have the flow to match the lyrics or it's not really lyricism....
Thats just literature. Rapping is a performing art. Rap lyrics need to be constructed in an engaging way, and delivered with the right timing and emphasis. They need to flow on top of/alongside the beat. The rhyme scheme should change a few times to avoid monotony. A great lyricist knows how to construct bars and deliver them for maximum impact.
No disrespect to Kendrick, he’s definitely the most consistent of the 2 when it comes to the quality of his albums, but RAPPING? The Fahrenheit trilogy alone is hard to top But like Myke said, when discussing lyricism, someone might look at cats like Navy Blue, Ka, Billy Woods or Tha God Fahim and consider them the GREATEST rappers ever, but their music just isn’t as accessible to the mainstream.
I wouldn’t say better artist because both are dope artists I think Kendrick makes song’s more radio friendly but definitely agree as a lyricist Lupe is better
@@jomarcoliverman4971 Yup, Lupe better lyrics wise and an actual artist, does it for the artistry(last two albums) . Kendrick is cool, but its more appealing to a bigger audience. Logic and Kendrick is a better match up.
I love the guy with the braids..Lyricism is about LYRICS and words.. delivery is not a metric to lyricism but more so to the overall artistry.. delivery, cadence, lyricism are separate components to a whole.
Be Humble speaks to the point at 9:05. Not the most lyrically thought provoking record, yet very catchy as far as mainstream criteriors go. Adding that it also was a subliminal diss record (insert any similar competing artist at the time: Drake, Big Sean, Kanye) and you have a recipe for success. Similar to Ether and Takeover. Takeover was not a radio friendly record lyrically and production-wise, however Ether, the more simplistic of the two was the more catchy record hence deciding the determining factor of the outcome....
its honestly a good match up. i enjoy kendrick as an artist more, there's just something about they way he conveys his abstract emotions and thoughts into his music that comes off more impactful than lupe, but bar for bar and intricate rhyme schemes with solid cohesiveness to his projects, yeah lupe probably.
the thing is, its difficult to have this conversation with people who aren't familiar with lupe's early mixtape series. That was the era where he had crazy wordplay but was still rapping about accessible subject matter. and yes, i think lupe is the better lyricist.
Yes. Kendrick can probably make a better body of work and will more than likely end his career with a better discography. But he can not out rap Lupe. I’m saying that as a fan of both.
Carter Simmons My favorites are Food & Liquor, The Cool, Tetsuo & Youth, Drogas Wave and all the mixtapes bump. I’m not gonna really compare Kendrick discography to his until Kendrick at least drops two more. But he is on pace to have a better catalog and that’s fine
F.L.O.W. I think Kendrick has 4/4 great albums, and Lupe’s 3/7. Not to mention, Drogas Wave, which is my favorite Lupe album, is nowhere near either TPAB or GKMC.
Lol it’s funny how everyone keeps pitting them against each other, when in reality they are so alike. They are both in the same realm of artistry and concepts. They both have elite skills in their respective styles, but in no way is one of them better than the other. We should be celebrating both of them because just between them two, you have a large chunk of the top ten best rap albums of the 21st century.
I think that's why they get compared so often, Kendrick is sort of a successor to Lupe's FL and Cool days, that sweet spot of smart, conscious lyricism with nice accessible production

I kinda want Anthony to explain his issue with Lupe one day, because everything about his musical taste tells me he should really dig his music, but instead he acts like he doesn’t even exist. Chat: LUPE LUPE LUPE

@@yhhkj529 melon head can't comprehend Lupe's lyrics lol
Me
Y'all are forgetting that Lupe was Black balled by the industry. It took Anonymous to force Atlantic to let him release music. And at that point Lupe was just trying to make songs to complete his album obligation so he could get off his contract. He even said "I wasn't going to give them anything I put my soul in". That's why Lupe's mainstream career tanked.
Facts

Gold Watch, Hello Goodbye, Put you on game etc are NOT radio friendly though.
That's pre-blackball Lupe as well.
And then he dropped dumb it down on that same album
True. Those songs are all great tho cuz it didn't sound like Lupe was reaching for a radio hit. HipHop Saved My Life has a whole double meaning to it.
@@SolidSnake240 that was an anthem for anyone whoever picked up a pen and pad. Lupes the cool album really was pretty deep. Even hi definition had some meaning in it.

Yup
I agree when he said that Kendrick is a better artist tho. Kdot has made masterpieces. Lupe has not, and may never will.
That's it.
Yes, no questions asked. Lupe is undoubtedly one of the greatest lyricists of all time
Interesting convo. No real controversy here once everyone reads Lupe's full comments on it, but this was a dope conversation to get out of it all.
Tetsuo and Youth Lyrically and Sonically is crazy man . Like Lyrically Kendrick can’t touch that . Far as TPAB that type of consciousness is also deep as fuck ... I still gotta give it to Lupe though
And that's why LU said Kendrick is a better artist. Lu as an Alien lyrically
Gwrightproductions1 he’s still not better lyrically but y’all can have the conversation.
I just imagine Kendrick calling Top and saying “bring Lupe to the studio”
I personally think Kendrick is more versatile

I think with the whole "delivery being a part of lyricism" debate that Rod brought up, I think that delivery should be taken into account when judging the overall MC, but not something as specific as lyricism that has to do specifically with words. That's why I think Lupe is a better lyricist, but Kendrick is a better overall MC.
I dont get what lyricism is anymore based on what people are saying. It seems clear that when people say someone is a lyricist theyre talkin about bars. People are saying things like provoking emotion, story telling, relatability etc and i dont think those are things that go into what makes a person a wordsmith
Idk. I think Lupes a better mc but Kendrick is better overall artist.
Wouldn't you say the ability to tell a story factors into it as well? I think Kendrick has a slight edge in that regard. Lupe is more dense and metaphorical but I'd argue Kendrick is more varied and has the storytelling edge.
They're both amazing artists.
Brandon The Cool story by Lupe is pretty dope. I think Kendrick just puts more emotion in his tracks.

I’m with Rod on delivery always being part of lyricism. How a bar is delivered does have a part in determining how good the bar is.
DEHH right on time with a video when I was looking for something to watch! Salute kings!
@Nathan Trujillo Well, you proved you're definitely not one lol. Dude, shut up!
Braillionaire dumb it down was a single
@@blkjohnnybravo3506 I know lol Hence my point. When I say "conceptual" I don't just mean the overall concept of the song. His bars are also abstract and conceptual. That's Lupe himself talks about his raps and his strengths. That song is a PERFECT example lol
I'm glad Lupe is getting recognition.
@@jonathansaraco If the delivery is trash you're not gonna even think twice about how lyrical they are. It has to go hand and hand....

@@damianjimenez8519 you should watch Company Man Lupe Fiasco vs. Kendrick Lamar "The Art of Stealing"
Lance Sexton i have, I fuck with Justin. But he’s said on multiple occasions that he’s a Lupe Stan also.
only reason y’all keep saying mainstream is because kendrick is so big. his music not even watered down.
Mainstream doesn't mean watered down so the statement still stands. If your entire country knows who you are, and you're performing at the Grammys and are getting awards from the most popular institutions you are mainstream. Its not a word used to describe something inauthentic, its a word used to describe how popular something is. Kendrick charts billboard every time he drops music. That's mainstream.
You think his verse on Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood wasn’t watered down?

People have a hard time dealing with their own with bias. It's okay to admit something another artist does better than your favorite. That doesn't mean you've betrayed your favorite, nor does it make said artist better overall. This is most common in music and sports.
Just wanna throw it out there that Tetsuo and Youth did the whole "different album in reverse" thing better than Damn imo
