I see a lot of people coming up with the excuse that it was a "judo trip". like hell it was. Find me a judo match where a competitor does a "trip" like this one. You could get disqualified for it! This was a kick. He knows it, his opponent knows it, the crowd knows it. Perhaps you should just call what it is instead of trying to make excuses for him.
Wrong pal... technically it was a judo trip, doesn't matter if he did carried by anger and did it agressively.... competitive jiu jitsu is agressive... contact sport... need balls and stomach to compete at this level both are professional, and sure didn't take it personally by the way, i would be pissed as well if someone crossed a leg on my knee just like clark did to galvão, right before the "kick"... those guys have injuries to their bones... his emotion was justified peace
its just the rule, no slam in bjj or grappling (depending which grappling event you enter). i think slaming someone can hurt him badly, guy can even end up in a wheelchair or get paralysing if you got hit on the head or ur spine can be severely damaged. In BJJ they consider this option that is why no slam in this sport.
It happened to three guys I train with this year, not even doing leg locks, and I was one of them. Torn ACL and four months without jiu-jitsu... just competed at World's for the first time in nine months. When you train hard sometimes it just happens.
I know Andre and Clark personally... They are both San Diego guys and have a lot of respect for one another. This was nothing more than emotion. Andre is a really good person and I'm sure Clark would agree.
You can't reap the persons knee...the problem is any type of leg attack, there is VERY little time to tap before you get seriously hurt. That's why in most tourneys, leg locks of any kind are illegal.
No problem brother. Check out the Pan Ams highlight I put together... you'll see some of his submissions... I'll have a bunch from Worlds once that highlight is done too.
ok then what kind of kick was it? It was a sweeping motion using the inside of his foot. I'm not a big karate guy but I don't know too many kicks like that. And Clark didn't know anything was wrong. He thought Galvao was disengaging and he got up and was trying to take him down. Not to mention they dapped hands right after that, so he must of not been to upset.
so galvao defends the calf slicer by pulling clark's leg across his midesection so it looks like clark is reaping the knee. then he gets all pissy cuz the ref knows it's b.s. no wonder galvao is so popular
I would disagree slightly and say that heel hooks provide very little time to attack but achillies locks and even toe holds are no more dangerous than other, upper body submissions.
The knee reap rule is out of date. I believe if you're a blackbelt you should be allowed to attack the knee using the reap. It's a combat sport, just as bad injuries can be sustained by an armbar or falling wrong on your knee.
They are both black belt right?!?! Black belts should have the skills to defend any attack correct? Then why is it illegal if my leg passes your hip in x y or z position?
@kermitthefrayer you are watching a competition within a Sport, not a street fight. One has rules, belts and weight classes the other does not. Think first, then comment...
Footsweeps occur when your foot stays on the ground through the movement, hence the word SWEEP. That was an inside leg kick disguised as a foot sweep because Galvao gets dirty like that. Footsweeps tend not to sound like a bat hitting a heavybag.
@kermitthefrayer Because this is a sport and as such it has rules. Given the fact that this sport entails intense physical contact, several rules are put into place to avoid people from getting hurt. Reaping the knee has a high probability of injuring the opponents knee and causing long term damage; thus, it is not allowed. Just watch some of Palhares' UFC fights and you'll get an idea of what could take place (although in the latter case, its heel hooks, not knee reaping).
Just so u know when wearing a gi you have to worry about 100 more sweep possibilities and not to mention the choke options, plus you can't just sweat yourself out of a position. Anyway the best grapplers in the world are gi practitioners so...
Respeitando as abilidades do Clarck e claro! Andre has a lot more experience that Clarck, that kick was just to say: Brother u have a lot more to learn. Respecting Clarck skills of course..
Judo 2 years, Jiu Jitsu 13 years. IN BRAZIL. Yeah, while its normal to lose timing, due to the circumstance he did it, @shahmirdh made a good point, keyboard expert.
Galvao finishes the majority of his opponents... he was collecting limbs and necks all day at Pan Ams and Worlds this year... but when you get to the final rounds and face opponents like Clark it's difficult to get the submission.
wow why are people hating on andre? wether he kicked him or aggressively tried to foot sweep him (which is what happened), he had the right to be pissed off cause clark was obviously reaping his knee...and to people who dont like the rule and say its stupid because people wont get injured or whatever, its still illegal and rules are rules....dont like it? then dont compete in or watch IBJJF tournaments, or dont bitch about it one. oss
Galvao wasn't "kicking" Clark he was trying to Judo trip him as Clark was advancing. I didn't see any disrespect. They got up and Clark was coming at him. I think some mis communication, yes. Galvao was trying to take him down.
@kermitthefrayer Echoing what KnockemOrLockem said, Reaping the Knee = torn ACL or MCL. In some cases this could mean no BJJ for the rest of one's life.
if you play it in slo-mo you see it's a sweep and not a kick since he lands on ryan's leg with his instep and not with the shit or top of the foot. It was indeed a nasty one, out of anger but not worth a DQ imho. I use foot sweep a lot from the the single leg and quite often people complain: had they done dome kickboxing they would be able to tell the difference it feels when you get actually shin kicked....
Everyone can see it was a low round kick, or leg kick, but he did it in a way that it would look like foot sweep. Im not saying Clark was pissed, seems like he thought it was kinda funny, but Andre was obviously pissed about the knee reap.
Tem data das fotos? Serio? Vlwww STALKER!!! IamJacksColon4 Yeah, not so much a submission though, more of of a position/transition. Technically it's called "reaping the knee". It's usually an automatic DQ. It's really dangerous in gi where the extra friction makes it really difficult to escape before the pressure on the knee becomes injurious. See from @4:30 onward. Notice the pressure on Galvao's knee. He speaks up to the ref about it a couple times and Clark as well. Then he got pissed.
@sqbronco1 I thought it was more Galvao's fault? because he was in a bear trap but he turned in to make it illegal. Weird that he would get mad like that.
I haven't watched much of Galvao. But does he play every match for points and not really go for submissions? He tried a collar choke for about 8 seconds but beyond that he didn't really try to finish Clark. Also, are you surprised he's got a crap attitude. Even at Metamorsis after he couldn't do anything to Ryron he bitched and bashed it cuz there weren't any points.
Pois eh, cara... so que eu comecei na Gracie Barra tambem. BARRA DA TIJUCA. Two masters at work here. I cannot even fathom the thought processes between these two. Thank you for posting.
First time I’ve watched a full Clark match and I’m impressed with the styles
I see a lot of people coming up with the excuse that it was a "judo trip". like hell it was. Find me a judo match where a competitor does a "trip" like this one. You could get disqualified for it!

peace
+Luiz Milky Exactly, Kawasaki sets up his yoko tomoe nage with the exact "kick".
Brazilians will excuse their boy no matter what he does. He got owned by Gordon this weekend and had a laundry list of excuses as always.
I love how the ref just ragdoll pulls'em at the end
Chute ridículo, digno de desclassificação.
Galvao and Clark are both great athletes and very respectable people. This was a competition not a dinner party.
nenhuma punição pelo chute? no negative points or disqualification for the kick?
Surprised Andre Galvao has gotten as far as he has with such attitude. So much for the 'gentle art'.
How many points for the kick....? Asking for a non Brazilian ibjjf competitor ....
its just the rule, no slam in bjj or grappling (depending which grappling event you enter).

Was it a heel hook attempt that agitated Galvao? Pretty unsportsmanlike especially from such a big Jiu Jitsu player.
is anyone checking to see if the size on these kimonos are even legal
Just so u know when wearing a gi you have to worry about 100 more sweep possibilities and not to mention the choke options, plus you can't just sweat yourself out of a position. Anyway the best grapplers in the world are gi practitioners so...

I love both of these guys.
its also illegal to slam but in a street fight their are slams . also in olympic wrestling their are slams why not in bbj or grappling
Sick match Galvao is the man!!!
leg locks are not illegal. they're just dangerous. and nobody wants to be sidelined for a year the same in any sport.
No one has the skills to defend absolutely any attack. We are all humans, after all.
Judo 2 years, Jiu Jitsu 13 years. IN BRAZIL. Yeah, while its normal to lose timing, due to the circumstance he did it, @shahmirdh made a good point, keyboard expert.
maybe i should try some leg kicks at bjj tournament now.
Galvao finishes the majority of his opponents... he was collecting limbs and necks all day at Pan Ams and Worlds this year... but when you get to the final rounds and face opponents like Clark it's difficult to get the submission.

San Diego has some awesome BJJ with Galvao, Clark Gracie, and Xande and Saulo Ribeiro. Not to mention Blackhouse and Fabio Santos.
Andre is the man!
Galvão dominando!
@kermitthefrayer Echoing what KnockemOrLockem said, Reaping the Knee = torn ACL or MCL. In some cases this could mean no BJJ for the rest of one's life.
well put
Thats an interesting point of view... i neve though about that.
if you play it in slo-mo you see it's a sweep and not a kick since he lands on ryan's leg with his instep and not with the shit or top of the foot.
It was indeed a nasty one, out of anger but not worth a DQ imho.
I use foot sweep a lot from the the single leg and quite often people complain: had they done dome kickboxing they would be able to tell the difference it feels when you get actually shin kicked....
+ElephantRage Who the hell is "Ryan?"
Fair enough. Was just curious. thanks for the answer :)
Galvao would be easier for guys to beat if he wasn't full of steroids and every performance enhancing substance he can find.
Dois monstros! Mas o Galvão é foda demais hehe
sometimes we just don't control our anger. It happens sometimes you know.
I guess if knee reaps are legal then kicks should be as well
this is a fight man, not a religion
thats what i thought!!!!!!!!! Guy has a pattern of losing it whenever the situation goes out of control for him.
He did !
Everyone can see it was a low round kick, or leg kick, but he did it in a way that it would look like foot sweep. Im not saying Clark was pissed, seems like he thought it was kinda funny, but Andre was obviously pissed about the knee reap.
The knee reap is too dangerous. But id like to see more sportsmanship on galvaos part.
Right, and the building was will with Jiu jitsu guys that cant tell the difference? That was a kick given plausible deniability as a judo sweep.
I just seen a miss sweep by galavo
because you people get hurt too much in tournaments before using these positions.
they banned it...
Tem data das fotos? Serio? Vlwww STALKER!!! Now we shoul train some muay thay to be ready just in case XD
Touche sir
Galvao was right pissed about the knee reap. Not the best reaction, but understandable.
illegal submission?
IamJacksColon4 Yeah, not so much a submission though, more of of a position/transition. Technically it's called "reaping the knee". It's usually an automatic DQ. It's really dangerous in gi where the extra friction makes it really difficult to escape before the pressure on the knee becomes injurious. See from @4:30 onward. Notice the pressure on Galvao's knee. He speaks up to the ref about it a couple times and Clark as well. Then he got pissed.
I guess it not really a reap, because clarks foot wasn't going past Andre's body. It was just tied up on his legs
andre is a badass
@sqbronco1 I thought it was more Galvao's fault? because he was in a bear trap but he turned in to make it illegal. Weird that he would get mad like that.
Jumping into guard should be a point deduction.
black belts should be model citizens for the community
i'm sorry, if your method of argument is to play stupid, then i don't have anything else to offer
I haven't watched much of Galvao. But does he play every match for points and not really go for submissions? He tried a collar choke for about 8 seconds but beyond that he didn't really try to finish Clark. Also, are you surprised he's got a crap attitude. Even at Metamorsis after he couldn't do anything to Ryron he bitched and bashed it cuz there weren't any points.
i find clark mor technical and galvao more explosive
Ja sou fa desse Clark Gracie, manda muito bem !!!
Knee reaps are illegal. At least that kicked was thinly veiled as a legal trip.
Nothing justifies the anti-ethical attitude of Galvao as a World Champion. There were children and families at the gym. This is not the message of JJ.

Andre hasn't changed at all. He was palm striking Gordon in their ADCC match.
clark sliced his knee, that's why he was angry
Galvao acted like such an idiot kicking the guy in a BJJ match. There are ways to address an issue and ways not to.
unsensibled:
hold back your words... Galvão is a very emotional athele, but a very professional one, as well... the guy lives for that, it's his world... i'm sure he is a nice guy, but those are fighters... perhaps you should study more about BJJ and how it was in the begining, in Para, Rio ....
both athletes deserve respect, not judges....
you guys are so cheerleaders, give me a break
just enjoy the awesome fight and learn from it
peace
Man i used to have alot of respect for galvao it would appear he always throws his toys Out of the Pram when things arent going his way or makes a comment that males him look like a spoilt child
Because this is a sport, and this position is the most likely to cause serious knee injury to the athlete, ending careers for nothing.
because twisting knee is illegal coup
Don't even waste your time explaining to this person why it's illegal. They obviously have no idea of what they are doing and could happen.
Yeah you do, but you could also just grab the guys gi to hold on when you're being outclassed like Gracie did. It isn't entertaining.
the key word is "should". he didn't say they have to. so to rephrase, you don't think black belts should exhibit wisdom and moral fiber? they shouldn't be thinking of their young students who pay their bills and aspire to be like them? they should act petty and insecure?
Yeah, there is a 1 in 600,000 chance of an injury via knee reap. Thank god it is illegal.
that's not even close to a foot sweep, no "okuri-ashi-harai" nor "ko-uchi-gari".... that's a plain kick! Not even in olympic Judo (which much more violent leg play) you see telegraphed leg kicks like that, that was just thrown like a whip. That player should be penalized, in Judo he would be for sure.
