  • The Pittsburgh Steelers' option in the first round could come down to whether they want an offensive tackle that's the fifth picked, or the top at another position like center. Chris Carter goes over why he thinks offensive tackle could have anywhere from four to five players picked before the Steelers' top pick at 20th overall, but why that wouldn't eliminate the position from consideration in the first round. That could even be the case if no center has been taken.
Also, Chris answers your Locked on Steelers mailbag questions. Do Russell Wilson and Justin Fields shift the need from needing a top offensive line? Who would be the top players to trade up for? And is Amarius Mims truly worth the 20th overall pick?

I doubt they wait until the 3rd round to get a WR. Maybe they trade back into the 2nd to get a WR and a center, but I don’t think that’s likely.

No it depends on how the draft falls, if the best available player is a wide receiver take him first, then if the next best is a tackle or center or defensive player take them next

Fuaga is there at 20? I’m running to the podium. Trade up in the 2nd using one of the 3rd rounders for a center, that is a must we have to get Frazier or Van Pran Granger. And trust the organization to find a WR in the 3rd.

The positional value, fit in Smiths system, and cap implications beyond this season make OT the move if one of their preferred options are there.

In this offense I don't think a receiver is needed to be picked before the top of round 4. Tackle, center, side line to sideline linebacker that can cover then dl, wr, cb and whatever else falls on the board.

I think they like Barton a lot, just not enough to take him at 20 over one of the tackles. You just don’t get drafts with that many talented tackles possibly available at 20, and the center class is much deeper than the media makes it out to be.

But all 6 decent Tackles will go first round. Zero Centers likely to go first round. Unless you count Barton, and he will probably be drafted to play guard. Which is weird because he has no snaps at guard.

None of the centers are Pouncey-level talents that warrant bringing drafted at 20. Centers just do not get drafted that high unless they are considered generational talents, which none of these are. This class is deep and I doubt they draft center over tackle unless all their targets at the position and CB are gone.
