Omgoodness that yellow was great to begin with but adding the red just made it spectacular!! The green is so pretty too but that yellow has all my colors!!
@@ChemKnitsTutorials I can see what you're talking about. Going from a golden yellow to a buttery soft pastel would have been beautiful also. Darn, more yarn to dye up.... 😊
Wow! That was really inspiring. I have some yarn mops hanging around that need a little something extra to make them pop. I'm off to divide them into mini skeins now, so I can try this! Thanks so much Rebecca 🤩
Thank you very much. I bought my first bare yarns to experiment and see what happens to try and dye. Something I’d want to knit up. I am only going to do food safe to start with. I don’t have enough time to knit as it you just make it look so exciting I have to try. I feel a draw to do this because of my past career, I’m an art instructor too in a different media and color is a huge part of my medium of polymer clays. I am now semi retired so I’m knitting as much as I can and want to knit with yarn I colored and of corse I want to make all the things. Knit all the thing’s.....lol
Dyeing is SO MUCH FUN. I love knitting with yarn that I've dyed, although I don't knit as much as I used to. I'm trying to schedule more knitting time for myself.
What a fantastic video. I love your enthusiasm so much!! These yarns are absolutely gorgeous...I really love the orange and yellow. My heart soars when I look at it. Those are the happiest colors ever! Thanks for all you do. I have learned so much from you!
In my head, I can see a gradient from a blood red (not burgundy), morphing to a chocolate brown, which then morphs to that deep olive green. It would be an interesting Christmas yarn and those colors are all in my living room. If you ever care to give that a go, please send me word, drop a comment pointing me to that video, or to your Etsy store for that yarn. Just a thought, so no worries, because it may not even be doable. Love your channel. Love science, and love craft and you've joined them nicely.
Thank you so much! This colorway you're describing sounds so lovely. It wouldn't be hard to do, dip the middle in the chocolate and then dip the ends into the two other colors. I'll have to try something like this sometime!
Thank you so much for another inspiring video! I love all the techniques that you show. You are one of the reasons I am so addicted to dyeing. I can't wait to try this technique. I have a skein of Hawthorne that I'm going to divide into minis and try this on them.
Brilliant new idea for dying, Rebecca 👍 and it turned out beautiful 😍 I've never really understood 'minis' as I have tons, just under the name 'scraps'... but with this method you'd actually be able to tone your scraps to maybe make a better fit colour wise. Really good idea. Thank you 😘
@@ChemKnitsTutorials I wasnt happy with my results when I did it a couple times, but I think I used yarn I wasn't crazy about. Wait until you try colors that break!!
There is a shawl that looks like a giant maple leaf, that both colourways could be used together. This way it would represent the Leaf halfway through changing.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials it can be found on ravelry, elfmoda Maple leaf is the name of the pattern and it needs between 700 to 900 metres of fingering yarn. So 2 skeins sock yarn might just be enough...
@@bochraakrout7840 Look for Acid Dyes. I'm not sure about brands available outside of the US. Jacquard is a big name that a lot of people use. ProChem is another big brand.
These really turned out amazing! Love them and the process. Is it Paton's that does that with their mini skeins? Yours are much better, by far. Thanks for another fun video!
Great question! It depends on the technique. If I'm going to hand paint on the counter and then steam, I like to add acid to the presoak so the yarn itself is acidic to accept the dye. If I am going to do any kind of immersion technique, I add the acid to the dyebath. You could do both if you want colors to strike fast. Ultimately it comes down to preference.
These are both sold out. BUT you could definitely make one with food coloring. If you have any bare (or pastel) yarn you could make some miniskeins out of it to set something like this out.
Hi Kate, I purchased these mini skeins directly from Wool2Dye4 so I didn't make these ones. I happen to own an automatic skein winder that I use for making miniskeins, but is a pretty pricey investment. I also will sometimes wind them around a niddy noddy to get whatever size I need. My best guess is that these are 4-6 feet around.
If the fiber is actually black, then it might get hard to get anything to show up. If it is more of a charcoal, you might be able to get a bit of a tint. ruclips.net/video/OFvRp-X6lxg/видео.html You would want a super saturated color if you were to see it.
I do dip dye non-superwash wool sometimes! I find that the greater felting danger is quickly going from too hot to too cold (so I don't recommend dipping in hot water and then plunging the yarn into a cool vat of water.) But starting from room temperature going into a hot pot has been fine for most yarns I've tried so far.
Yes! It was subtle with dip dyeing - I don't quite have a hand on the right conditions like I do with food coloring. But it is beautiful. ruclips.net/video/ghHOqdhmW1U/видео.html

That was Caron Pantone and I adored that yarn! I was mad when they got rid of it.
They got rid of it? that's sad!
I'm so stoked that you did green again!! The are both gorgeous but green is my heart 💚💚💚
That reveal though!! I need that colour in my life 💚

How do you decide when to soak in plain water or vinegar water?

These are both groovy colorways.
Than you, David!
What do you do with any dye left in the pot can you put it down the drain
If you have a septic system I would make sure to neutralize it first so you don't cause issues there. But I can put it down the drain where I live.
Have you tried breaking dharmas delphinium blue? It's beautiful! Breaks to a lovely pink

What happens with apple cider vinegar?
I'm not sure! I've never tried it. There could be some staining from the other pigments in it, but otherwise it should work fine.
