We need a science and futurism tech tree. It should include all technologies from reuseable rockets to building stars and red mega clusters. That would be epic.
I need this mod in every game. 4x, flight sim, transport sim... All of em
Good morning Isaac! Thanks for continuing to produce these episodes; a staple in many of our lives.
Thanks for watching :)
I cannot express in words how grateful I am for your content.
I'm now exercising and trying to live a healthier life to step on the staircase of extended lifespan, to increase my probability of seeing The SFIA Compendium Compendium one day.
“There’s literally everything in space Morty!”
As per tradition. Isaac has deployed the wifebot for the different chapters👍
my god, a two hour drop? issac has blessed us once again!!!!
took me several days to watch it
The community greatly appreciates the the work that goes into this content. Keep up the great work Isaac and everyone else that help you make these videos.
Amen!
I really wish entire planet could concentrate its resources and efforts into colonization of Space, instead of destroying each other...
Many of us do, unfortunately it seems war, and greed will remain with us for some time.
But space warfare is based...Imagine waiting days and days just for your missiles to hit and depressurize another floating metal can in space only for it to be aimbotted out of the -sky- (space?) by said target's lasers
Why? There is no benefit to putting 1000s of people into space now or the near future. It makes an interesting story, but we don't have trillions of dollars to spend just to put a few hundred people on the moon, for example. There are the moon they would be in constant danger and completely dependent on people on earth for everything and it would cost enormous amounts of money. We have young children all over the world who don't have enough food, poor housing, no heat or air conditioning, and drinking dirty water. Putting wealthy, highly educated, privileged people up in space to live is unthinkable at the point.
@@johndoe7901 Unfortunately...
@@j-twd930 at least, Humanity has a bigger chance for survival in Space...
Ahh yes, my second favorite sleeping pill (the first being rain and thunder), this will make a fine addition to my collection!
Yea those Jurassic Park ones are great too! Raining in the high hide is one i keep going back to
0:40 congratulations 🍾
This was great to have listened to for the last two days at work on Nebula.
Extra long episodes are a treat in themselves.
Simply superb work Isaac.
We have several longer ones coming up, don't ask me why but after specifically setting out to do shorter episodes to recover time after writing this one the majority of the episodes written for the next month are in that 40+minute window anyway. :)
Allways hyped getting new videos from you Issac, and really appriciate your channel.
Glad you like them!
Babes wake up, Isaac Arthur just released another compendium.
Lol I'm ready for beddd for first watch lol
Hey Isaac, can there be something like a "weapon" or "war" compendium that goes into the many ways that we might fight each other with and the possible reasons on why we would fight eachother to begin with, or at least just a update video on Space Warfare or Next Century of War?
Quite possibly, not a bad idea
Maybe with that video, we could finally learn what the first rule of warfare is.
@@VainerCactus0first rule of warfare
"The first rule is classified"
second rule of warfare
“Second rule is also classified”
@@znardi no it's "follow the first rule"
A drink and a snack? I grabbed dinner!
Me too.
I feel that self replicating robots are really the key to jump starting our colonization of space. Robots can lead the way and eliminate much of the risk and drudgery of the process.
Yep, trying to find out what we can do with them and when/how we should do it is probably the trickier part, runaway astrochickens being a legitimate concern.
like the gate way foundation on building space stations using robots same can be used to build moon bases and mars colonies like you said taking the risk from humans
I am almost certain a squad of Tesla bots will be sent to Mars in a few years!
I would argue that there are 5 possible scenarios for interstellar colonisation:
1. We never leave our solar system.
2. We use interstellar arcs to reach other stars taking many generations to complete the journey (most likely the arcs would be powered by a fusion reactor).
3. Relativistic speeds will allow us to travel to nearby stars taking many years to complete the journey but still within a human lifespan timeframe. These ships would be driven by antimatter engines.
4. Faster than light travel (using a warp drive) will allow us to quickly colonise and move throughout the galaxy.
5. Instantaneous travel (using wormholes) will regularly let us travel to other galaxies.
Will we get a future episode about Collector Ships? They sound fascinating and are obliquely referenced in some of the other generation ship episodes but could likely benefit from a full episode. This episode was amazing and clearly took a ton of effort. Excellent work!
Not a bad idea, I'll it in the polling queue for September
I love the compendiums even more than the regular episodes. Thanks Isaac!
More to come!
I just need enough food for this gem.
glass of milk and pound cake for me this morning to finish watching this
Sweet, a nice, long video to put me to sleep! And then to listen to again when I get up because I won't remember 80% in the morning!
lol, just yesterday and today I listened to the colonizing Alpha Centauri episode. Good quality stuff!! Please keep it coming!
2:58 antimatter ships probably could have also been added to ship drives
True, them and black holes almost got in there, but I was trying to avoid spending too much time on drives though since we've got a compendium devoted to that already. They're faster but overlap conceptually with both fusion and ion drives, and the net effect of access to either is sufficient speed and energy abundance to make colonization much easier.
Thank god a new compendium. So i know what to listen to the next hours while doing my chores.
I have been looking forward to this for a long time, I will be cooking my dinner while I watch, and then eating it and go to bed listening to this!
Been here since the beginning mate. You’ve come a long way. Much love from UK. You’re a real one
Love this guy
I have been (hoping) waiting for this for years now!!! Yayyyy ❤ extended drink and snack time!
LOVED ❤ The extra long format ❤
Love your content, Arthur. First place I go to brainstorm concepts for more realistic sci-fi.
By sheer good fortune I stumbled onto this new video.
I cant begin tell you how many time I've rewatched the other compendiums and how many times I'll end up rewatching this one
did not "watched" the video, instead of listening it on Spotify, but i am sure i will watch it as soon i ve got youtube working on my television.... but i am flabbergasted how much to think of and consider and reconsider for my story of crawlonizing our System... thank you for all your work Sarah and Isaac and those unnamed workers helping to keep that channel everytime more interesting!
The Habitat Compendium was Magnificent! This one was MASSIVE! Today I finally had time to sit down and watch the video from start to finish. What a wonderful body of knowledge! You’re building your own university! (Stated un-ironically, and pun not intended.)
Ideas for future episodes: 1.) How to Escape from the solar system without being caught. (Avoid being pursued by the hegemonic dyson swarm empire. Or something like that) 2.) How living in the space between stars might be a preference for humans once we have had enough time to do so, as there will be plenty of time before we can traverse the vast spaces between stars. If human intelligence is truly adaptable, it may decide to skip the stars altogether in favor of this vastly larger volume of the galaxy and universe. Might the resources in between stars be a better environment in which to thrive, outside of a gravity well entirely?
Dude, I saw an Isaac Arthur video with the word "Compendium". Yeah, I made myself a massive burrito, a glass of lemonade, and a joint. I'm going to enjoy myself.
Well done!
This is the type of content I subscribed for all those years ago
This is very well done
This is perfect cause it's time for a big cleanup operation today + I gotta bring my dog somewhere. Thank you I was really looking forward to this and it's even beefier than I hoped.
Love you Isaac!

The extra long ones are my favorite ❤
The channel has very useful information, thanks.
Wow, a whole 2+ hr episode! You spoil us.
Nice. I will have to show it off to family and freinds.

* No sarc was involved in my referring to him as “brilliant”, because he obviously is. These videos are edge-of-the- chair fascinating, and this man’s insights are beyond formidable. However, just imo, and what do I know, really; he’s overly optimistic about a lot of things. If he’s right and I’m mistaken, that would make me extremely happy. Cheers. Thank you for this engaging channel; I must have a daily fix of it. It’s one of my favorites.
Escape has a (not mutualy exclusive) sister motivation of: banished.
Potentialy also solving the funding problem.
An episode on Banish or Exiled Colonies sounds rather neat
@@isaacarthurSFIA potential topics include:
-an AI Overlord decides that death is to good for it's oponents and sends them to an AI forsaken Planet instead
-an "unsentimental" (to paraphrase Stalin) Experiment to figure out if Humans can survive in an Alien ecosystem is to drop some Prisoners there and then send a Probe to look what has happened
-biotech advancing to a Point where one of the sexes decides that the other one is not needed anymore and to have a species divorce, keeping the Planet
-future government figures out that sending likely oposition forces away is a wonderful thing to throw money at. Incidently those oponents perhaps wanting to escape said government leads to overlap with escape.
-the traditional sending criminals (or other undesirabels) to space Australia
-and technically Khan, sorry i mean Khaaaaaan, Exile on Ceti Alpha V from Star Trek is a case of banished to.
Great episode.
Congratulations on your awards Isaac!
Thank you!
@@isaacarthurSFIA congrats on kicking the habit as well I stopped smoking about 7 years ago along with a few other poorly chosen habits. This is great! So much I will incorporate!
Motivation: Escape (ethnic/political) & Long Term Safety.
• Separatist colonies allow groups that do not wish to (or are not allowed to) remain in their Earth nations to set up their own communities.
We will be claiming the whole system. If peaceful coexistence was possible why leave the Sol System at all? They will never be able to kill us all off!
Fair point, but I think we have to assume a lot of systems won't stay static, this generation's separatist group, 10 generations down the road, might have very different views on the matter, and might also view a small trickle of trade or tourism very differently and see that expand over time.
@isaacarthurSFIA I forgot to say…
Means: 1. FTL hybrid
1A. FTL Ark ships
We will ruthlessly defend ourselves and our space. Recognize us and send us diplomatic missions with personnel who comply with our Constitution and our laws (same goes with tourists & traders) and you've got everything from our biotech to our agricultural products, our engineers/scientists, money, and so much more. Those who are unable or unwilling to comply can recognize us and we will have small habitats set up close by in the “international waters” of space and interact with you personally there if need be. If we like you we will throw you a welcome party or even a whole festival! We will come bearing gifts! We can be good friends or bad enemies. Please choose to be our friends.
You once did a show about space telescopes I hope someday you might revisit that topic..
Notification squad. Appreciate you Isaac

\o/ yay 2 hour video!!!!!!!!!
been a while since I watched you been busy moving in our new house, but 2 hours 14 minutes esp WOW
Good luck... I tihnk it took Sarah and a few months to get mostly unpacked when we moved, audiobooks and long form YT vids were a lifesaver during that.

Around June 2024 I started seeing articles similar to the following:
"However, new theoretical physics research by a team of researchers at the University of Waterloo and Universidad Complutense de Madrid demonstrates that kugelblitze are impossible in our current universe."
I love 2:02:12 "Modern technology and automation let us solve *problems* ." 😁
yeeyee its arthursday
Oh hell yeah 😮
"If you are new here..." my drink and snacks next to me waiting.
2:02:20 "You might be an augmented cyborg walking around in a suit Iron Man would envy with a bunch of killamajig murder drones hovering around you supported by orbital ships and defense platforms that can launch precision orbital strikes. Technology and automation let us solve problems, so does time."
That is the best argument for technological transhumanism I've ever heard and it wasn't even the point of the statement!
Still hoping for a space traffic controller episode. I wonder what the FAA el be like when it includes space.
If you're going to invest in a colony in orbit or on-world, would you want to inventory the nearby space objects, maybe send out cubesats to fly near them, to let you know about their trajectories?
Probably, it would depend on the cost to survey I imagine, and probably a lot of opportunity cost early on, make another probe or make another settlement widget
@@isaacarthurSFIA OK, so why aren't we doing that today? We cant see them all, from Earth, whizzing around the Sun!
I love that title music…
Sirius by Sergey cheremisinov, he's got a lot of great songs
Fusion drives dont really need to break even to be good thrusters. If you consider the neutrons emitted from a homemade fusor running at 1-2 kW total you can get 10^6s of Isp just only with a thrust of 10^-5 N. This ignores the alpha particles cause I was lazy and requires significant shielding over half the core and then uses a very simplified emission profile for the neutrons
"Space is enormous, and most of everything is in it." 😂😂😂
Have you considered include Quantum Entanglement communication systems? So even if TFL is not achieved, information can travel almost instantaneously across the universe(two synched devices). That would be an interresting hybrid colonisation model. No TFL but Instant communications.
That award was very much earned! Congratulations! Great content as well as great animations! I just wish CIG would pay attention to your videos to make a better game (Star Citizen).
Got my drink and snack ready! Watching this it occurs to me, that maybe to some life forms on a different planet, we may become the alien invaders that they are righteously defending themselves against.
Fantastic.
Many thanks!

or to an eternal battlefield. just because something rubbed us the wrong way.
We live in a narrow slice where communication between all humans can be functionally instant
it has been said many times , anti gravity has been retro engineered now, once they release the power requirements we can talk about all this again ....
1:17 that’s the hope.
How do fusion drives get rid of the excess heat? Moon sized radiators?
great compendium. FYI, I don't remember if it was on Anton Petrov or Fraser Cain, but one of them went into a publication that showed that producing a Kügelblitz black hole was impossible.
I know Anton did one, Fraser might have too, but tbh I didn't think the paper changed much on the basic reasoning, when I talked about black hole tech earlier this year I was pretty blunt that I doubted we could make anything sub-megaton or even gigaton. We have a lot of papers come out that more or less formally state stuff folks have been discussing on forums for years before. Though often with much better rigor of course, the problem is without an actual functional theory of quantum gravity nothing is even vaguely conclusive.
Higher mass requires greater thrust to move it. So how can a black hole be used to fuel a star ship? Wouldn't the mass of the black hole require an engine the size of our solar system to move it?
I have been asking for an sfia calender for years; can we please get a big book of space colonization, pullleaze?! Thanks in advance! 8-P
Terraforming planets will be made easier when we learn to move the planet in question's orbit and fine tune it with a moon such as ours. Using the Earth/Moon/Sun model we have and emulating it. Building moons that 'fit' the target planet, and moving orbits are two technologies we can set as goals and as foundational to terraforming. Also, we should answer the question: Can several planets occupy the same orbit, perhaps on opposite sides of the sun? Will more than one planet using the same orbit affect the anchoring sun similar to lunar tidal effects? At least, that is imho
Hiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
The real reason for the compendium is that Isaac needs to take some time off for soul searching after learning that Kugelblitz black holes may not be possible. :-(
You should have a Compendium playlist.
Maybe even acompendium of compendiums...
It is this time.
10 years? Wow
I want to go.
Are the floating objects around Earth more densely populated than the asteroid fields?
Thanks for the content! Any comment on Exodus Propulsion Technologies? It sounds to me like a lot of hype about very little, but I wanted your thoughts on it.
Not yet, I'm not terribly optimistic about it but I think even its critics are prematurely overhyping it, I think. I don't want to kneejerk assume its nonsense, as I tihnk that happens too often, but thus far I'm not seeing anything lending it much credence either,
💖
Next compendium video - rules of warfare compendium!
I think the next would probably be a terraforming compendium, but somebody suggested Space Warfare earlier today and I pretty much got sold on it instantly.
@@isaacarthurSFIA war and futurism?! But war.. war never changes
@@Yoel_Mizrachi In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.
honestly i really think war will never ever cease to exist.
there will always be some place somewhere in human decendant civs where some faction will slaughter some other one.
that surely doesnt mean there cant be islands of peace and prosperity throughout, though.
@MrMelonMonkey I am reminded of the quote. "War is a continuation of politics..." As long as we have political disagreement we are probably going to have some fighting and some war eventually.
assignation methods of the future
Hypothetical game time now, considering what has been discussed in this video and other SFIA videos on colonizing various planetary bodies, If you had to write the plan for human colonization of space over the next millennium what would you build and in what order? If you knew Earth would be destroyed in 1000 years and it was your job to plan the continuation of the human race through the colonization of space, what would you do?
Beaming systems are the happiest way to space travel.
