  • The MOST Painful Repair I've Ever Performed (N55 335i)
This is probably the most painful repair I have ever performed on any car. It was frustrating. It was difficult. It was down right physically and mentally painful. I hated replacing my thermostat to cylinder head coolant hose. It was awful. I hope this video helps at least one person to make it worth it.

Good video John. I have already replaced my fitting to aluminium on my n54. Every repair on a N54,55 E90, E92 coupe, as in my case is a nightmare come true. I replaced my turbos. That is engine hanging on its hook, subframe and steering rack out just to even het to them, and then that is just the start. Pretty much designed for whole engine out job. I have done coils, Mosfets that fire the injectors in the ECU, the injectors, high pressurer fuel pump, starter motor, gearbox, new radiator, valve cover gasket, oil catch can after having to clean out the inlet manifold, bluetooth module, battery, catalytic converters rear, front are deleted. And a ton of stuff i have probably forgotten. I have a box of ABS new leads, reluctor rings, wheel speed sensors and brake pad wear sensors yet to fit so i can delete the fault codes. The cars are a S O B#itch. Nicer when they are going well, which is not often for long.

Anyone who has this problem buy an aluminum coolant fitting. They are cheap, mine from EBay is going strong. Cut the metal band off coolant hose and use supplied clamp to attach to new Aluminum coolant fitting. No need to remove hose from Thermostat.

I feel your pain man these engines are very complicated and one of the most difficult in the industry to repair. They are designed this way! Bmw does this to recapture jobs and make serious profits on each and every car they sell after they are out of warranty. A seemingly simple fuel injector went bad on me, on a n55 x5, and BMW requires engine removal for this and a whole line of special tools. What debauchery!!! They should make building design like this completely illegal and car companies need to stop being so greedy as to be doing this anymore, this is 2020. There is absolutely no need for their whole big line of special tools, it's just a big money making scheme. The dealers themselves can't even keep up, they usually don't have all of the special tools needed. And the technician's are abused, always behind on training bc these designs are constantly changing! They are forced to fix them before they know anything about them. It's time for reformation!

I have a 2008 N54 engine on a 335XI sedan model. Hoping it's not a nightmare like you encountered. (My hose is very similar to yours but just a very slight difference with the way it bends.) All the best.

the water pump on my e90 n55 was absolutely a bear of a task. pretty much a patience check for any mechanic performing it. had an aluminum replacement hose end connector and didn't install it because i couldn't remove the clamp on the hose :(

It takes less than 50mins remove the 2, 10mm at the housing and 2, at the expansion tank to give you more room... use a 6mm Ratchet Wrench to take the clamp off ... take the two clips off that hold the hose in place and repeat backwards 😎

If this is the worst repair you have had to do... then you have a well maintained car. Nothing big in this repair when you are doing this repair go ahead and order a metal version for the mount because it will fall apart when pressure is released from the nug. I have had not had any break with my 3 e90s (n51,n52, n55)

Just need the aluminium upgrade end piece (mickey mouse shape), then take off crappy BMW plastic original. Don't need to replace whole hose if it's just the end connector. The new plastic piece on new hose will have same issue in time.

I laughed so hard out of nowhere when you said Idk why BMW designed this like this. Ive had like 25 moments like that rage quitting because of the stupidity of some of their designs. Some of these parts are just plainly retarded. Painful to work on for sure, especially my n54

  • @zacknottke270

Damn u didn't have to replace the entire hose.... You just buy a new end piece on the hose that attaches on to the oil filter housing. You buy it off eBay it's a metal piece to so it won't ever break again
