Next time, have them give you the RAID version of this device. I think it might be a really interesting backup device.

Yeah really needs to be RAID1 for an archive drive. No matter the quality of the drive, I wouldn’t have a single drive backup device of this capacity myself.

I’m really disappointed by the speed of the pro blade reader. I was about to pick one of these up and use the SSD as my working drive, and then move projects to the HDD for more inactive projects, but I think I’ll have to keep looking for another solution.
    Thanks for the useful info!

really suprised by this as well, extremely odd decision on their part to employ this xfer protocol.

good video 👌overall, I'm happy with my 22tb version of this. noise is not bad, OSX seemed to index it promply and yields accurate search results, and it's just damn good looking 👀
few observations: I have seen some random disconnects (primarily next morning, never mid-working). spool up time from dormit to active is about 20-30 seconds (sometimes see lightroom or NLE seize up for short amount of time). Response time for skimming 4k video decently useful in my case (referencing a shoot from year ago, skim clips via finder preview/spacebar), though this has degraded now that the drive has filled up. biggest downside i would note for considering buying this would be the r/w speeds. Similar to your results here, it clocked proper speeds when new & empty. Once it got past the 11-12tb mark, the speeds started ramping downwards. This to be expected to a certain extent, it's the nature of spinning drives. Currently with 3tb remaining, I'm seeing 120-130mb speeds, and this is def noticeable when skimming thru older shoots looking thru a multitude of clips. it doesn't sound like a lot, but when preview is 2-3 sec per clip vs 'slowly instant', this can be impactful. just a FYI out there for anyone considering this drive.

SanDisk / WD have a LONG way to go to rebuild trust after the data loss issues they have had in recent years, and how they handled those events. Zero chance of me buying any of their products any time soon.

It’s a nice enclosure. Too bad you can’t open it to use with a higher capacity drive down the road.

i didn't realize these were sealed in that regard? thought I'd seen some YT vids of someone doing this 🤔

My 8TB appears to be drawing power from my Macbook M1 laptop. Both are connected to external power.

I want the 22TB version but I don't have 800+ USD to burn ^_^ Cant even afford the smallest capacity version avaialble the 6TB 380+ USD. Isn't it better if we opt for an SSD backup drive even if its just sata speed than mechanical hdd? I think it can cost as much but last longer.

One misconception that some people have is seeing Mac mentioned on the box and outright assuming it is some weird thing that is not compatible with a PC. While that is usually false I can see why they would think that since Apple is known for proprietary things that do not work with a PC. What these people don't get is that you just have to find the drive in Disk Management in Windows and delete the partitions and make new ones. There is a way in Linux also but I am not familiar with it. Unless there really is something weird in there I don't see any reason for it not to work. Now if it was something from Apple I would have to look into what is inside it to tell if it is compatible with a PC in any way or at least see if that is mentioned by Apple on the website.

A simple reformat is all you need to do.

Can resist damages when you throw it to the floor accidentally and water? Wonderful video. And do i need to connect to electricuty to make it work while it's plugged to the pc or macbook?

With a HDD a standard USB 3.0 port is all you'll need to transfer data to or from the hard drive. You're not going to get a speed boost from anything faster.

Lon, nice review. Does it support a JBOD or RAID configuration?

I suppose you could set it up through the OS to do that but it's not designed for that kind of functionality.

So Western Digital has officially changed their name to WD? Sort of like how CBS changed their name from the Columbia Broadcasting System to just CBS? In an unrelated topic what is the white stuff falling down on you at 6:12?

I find it way overpriced and certainly not something I'd choose to afford. Too much price; not enough performance, not enough expandability; just over-priced.
It'd be a far better spend of money to buy a NAS and start from scratch. Not impressed with the solution.

So it's a primitive external drive without any network connection and network file share capability. Even the larger variants seem to be like that

@@kernzilla meaning I had a big project with a new client to download and the drive kept dismounting and costing me valuable hours and ultimately days of DL time. To the point where deliverables will be this week instead of last week. People pay their mortgages off of these pieces of hardware. They need to do a better job.

It probably doesn’t need any more speed writing or reading from the spinning drive.. That’s the common choke point.

Can this be used as a NAS drive? Storing photos, family videos, favorite movie streams, etc
