When it comes to kustom cars, the 1951 Mercury built by George and Sam Barris for Bob Hirohata is about as legendary as it gets. The innovative 1951 Mercury Hirohata kustom introduced many kustom design elements, and remains true to form today, even through an extensive restoration. Oh yeah, it also looks awesome! It’s long, low, chopped, clean, with Buick side trim, tuck & roll interior, Cadillac Sombrero hubcaps, and a real Von Dutch stripe on the dash, and it’s boss.
The Hirohata Merc demonstrates the perfect top chop on a custom car, and we were super excited to see the car in person at the 2021 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show in Chicago. (MCACN). No, it's not a Muscle Car, but the Mecum Auction Company had the car on display. In fact, the Hirohata Mercury became the highest selling Kustom car ever, fetching $1.95 Million at the 2022 Mecum Kissimmee auction in Florida on January 15, 2022!
The car has a rich history, transforming from stock, to the custom like in this video, to changing colors and being wrecked in the 1950s. The same family has owned the car for decades, and finally took the opportunity to restore the car back to the original Barris version.

The most iconic and beautifully designed custom Merc ever done. So many subtle details that look like it was built that way from the factory, every custom touch that the Barris Brothers changed is so perfectly done, you have to look at the car multiple times before you realize unless you had a stock one sitting next to it. The fact that it was done in 1953 is a testament to the vision of what was and still is possible when you have a fabricator who with restraint and an idea has written the book on what works when you let their imagination and creativity loose!

Truly beautiful automobile! Only one complaint should have put a 430 MEL in it.
Those MEL engines are cool, but this one was built this way before the MEL existed. Back then, the OHV Cadillac was the hot ticket, and this one is true to its early 1950s form.
The Hirohata Mercs are the pride of my Hot Wheels collection. I have several in both 1:64 and 1:24.

I am glad everyone gets an opinion. Mine is why would any pay 2.1 million dollars for this car. Nice but no for me... There is nothing anyone can say to change my mind.
I don't think anyone would want to change your mind. I think there are several conditions to purchasing a car like this. First, you need that kind of money to spend. Having said that, by comparison, there are paintings that fetch 200 million. The point is that the item does something for the buyer. In this case, the car is a true American icon, and a definitive example of a kustom car with a legit history and an amazing story. Owning it, or being it's "keeper" for a while, is not something someone would do to try to turn a profit. This is an investment into the soul... the chance to be a small part of a far more significant thing that has touched the lives of millions of enthusiasts around the world for nearly 7 decades. It's far from a car, it's truly a national treasure. One you can drive around and be cool doing it. Something you can't do with a painting. I can only imagine the buyer's joy right now... knowing that he had the financial means, and the once in a lifetime opportunity (literally) to bring home and enjoy a legend. What's that worth? for some, 1.95M. For others much more. And for even more, far less. I have items that aren't worth anything, really, but I'd never sell because of their meaning to me. Mecum is a big sponsor of the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, and they always bring their highest-profile cars to that show in Chicago in November to put them in their big display in front of the crowd ahead of their Kissimmee auction. It gave many the first (and maybe only) chance to see the car in person, and many of the participants of that show are fully capable of becoming the next caretaker. The car just sold for 1.95 Million, McNeil would probably be pretty happy about that.

We don't think so, there are some Cadillac parts, Lincoln, Ford stuff, Buick trim, but not sure about Chevy parts.
