I suspect he has a de tuning effect going on too. Or one of the guitars is slightly out of tune. That gives it that cool droning sound.
i use heave modulation on a delay - it's just the jesus and mary chain beat with a three chord progression but,the big but, i am playing the mixing faders on the desk, it's not about the tracks as is.
