Who are the Sindhis? I wasn't aware of the Sindhi community till I met my wife, Shaneez. I always wanted to make a video on the Sindhi community because I feel many of us are not aware of their culture. Shaneez's family history reveals how her grandparents fled during the partition violence around 1947, leading to migration to Surabaya, Indonesia. I talk about the rich and often-overlooked history of Sindhi Hindus, their cultural dynamics, and the impact of British colonialism, which allowed many to prosper abroad. Despite thriving in business and adapting to new lands, the community faces identity struggles in India, sliding into stereotypes and losing their language. The plight of Sindhi Hindus, both in India and Pakistan, underscores the tension of preserving culture while navigating modernity.

This video means a lot to me. My mom’s Sindhi-her family carried stories of Jhulelal and Partition across continents-and my dad’s from the Bhil tribe in MP, where his ancestors’ bond with the land runs deep. Growing up, our home was this quiet blend of Dal Pakwan and Bhil folk tales at bedtime.
It’s funny how both sides of my family share this unspoken rule: *adapt, but never forget*. Sindhis rebuilding lives in Bombay slums or Ghana, Bhils preserving ancient art and rituals-it’s all about holding onto who you are, even when the world tries to erase it.
bhil is diff ethnic grp from sindhis bhil people have their own languages and culture.

Hi Mohak! As a Sindhi Hindu, this video was an emotionally taxing one for many reasons. Heartfelt gratitude to you and your team for highlighting your wife's roots and our community's history to the world ❤ Fun Fact: Once my Java teacher (a humble Gujarati person) told us that the guy who worked with Larry Page, Sergey Brin establish Google was Rajeev Motwani, a Sindhi guy. Our disconnect with the land is so real. Not many Indian communities can fathom what is it like to lose touch with your roots. We Sindhis just start to assimilate with the local people, be it states of MH, GJ, RJ or countries like USA, UK, UAE, Hong Kong. Only recently I have learnt the Perso-Arabic script which you talked about in the video. Last but not the least, when Shaneez told she couldn't recognize the Sindh of today to be her ancestral land, it is the most disheartening thing. Religious extremism has changed how Muslims view other minorities in Pakistan.
@@vishalsyoutube yes u re right I m from sindh 😓

why are so many sindhis and other groups who ran for their lives from pakistan hinduphobic ???
Even in whichever era Perso-Arabic script was introduced among Sindhi people centuries ago, it was skin to losing native culture. And now you carry the same invader's script as your own Sindhhi community culture. This is how cultures evolve. Centuries ago Perso-Arabic replaced the native script and today Gujarati, Hindi and English are replacing it.

My mum’s grandmother was forced to flee Shikarpur, Pakistan, after unimaginable violence. Her father was shot dead in his utensils shop, leaving her and her elder sister with no choice but to escape. They boarded a ship from Karachi to Bombay, leaving behind their mother and everything they had ever known.
Eventually, they found refuge in Udaipur, Rajasthan, where they started their lives from scratch. She later married my mum’s grandfather, who himself had fled from Quetta. Together, they endured every hardship, working tirelessly to ensure their children had stability, education, and a future they never had.
Even decades later, my mum’s grandmother would have tears in her eyes whenever she spoke of her homeland. The first-generation Indian Sindhis carried their pain with quiet strength, building everything from nothing-so their future generations wouldn’t have to.

I was born in Sindh; my family relocated to Mumbai in 1999. From nothing, my father worked incredibly hard to give us our schooling and everything. Back in Sind, he had a video center that local Moullvis destroyed since, at the time, radicalism was growing so he decided to come to Mumbai. After the 2001 attacks on Indian Parliament, my grandma was still in Sindh and passage from Pak was prohibited. She sadly died in Sind and missed her son last time.
Remember that our people have always mixed in wherever we have resided, even though many of us Sindhis are currently experiencing an identity crisis.
This is what Odin told Thor “Asgard is not a place, it is its people” similarly Sindh is not a place, it is its people. 😀

Hey mohak this made me emotional because finally someone is addressing this issue that Sindhi culture is dying at an unprecedented rate. People I talk to don’t want to speak Sindhi and my heart shrinks hearing that.
I hear the stories of my grandfather and father of How the daily needs were met of the family those were just heart breaking as they had to sell “pav”. My mom used to work in a candle factory in which they used to pack the packets of candle on which they got the salary.
Keeping the culture alive ahead would be a mammoth task for all of us.

Thank you, Mohak, for this amazing video! ❤ It took me on an emotional rollercoaster-surprised to learn your wife is Sindhi, happy to discover more about my roots, and a little sad thinking about the struggles our ancestors went through.
Like Divina, I also had a moment of realization about my identity. I remember seeing Ramesh Sipahimalani "Sippy" (the director of Sholay) at a film festival and wanting to talk to him in sindhi to make it special. But then it hit me-I wasn’t confident speaking my own language. I can speak Italian, Portuguese, English, and Hindi, but I struggle with Sindhi. That moment really stuck with me, and since then, I’ve been trying to speak Sindhi more, at least within my family.
Your wife’s comment about Sindhis never having a simple answer when asked where they’re from really hit home. 😂 I was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, but I don’t speak Marwari. So every time someone asks, it turns into a whole conversation!
Thanks again for this well-researched, insightful, and heartwarming video. It made me feel proud, nostalgic, and even more motivated to keep our culture alive. Also, your wife is absolutely gorgeous-like most Sindhis, haha! 😆❤

Hola, Mohak!! :) Thanks a ton for your informative video on Sindhis. I'm from Hyderabad, Sindh, and it's great to know that Shaneez is Sindhi. Despite the challenges Sindh faces today, most Sindhis still uphold the philosophy quoted by Ram Jethmalani Sb: 'We Sindhis are born secular; we get secularism from our mother’s milk. We are Sindhis first, and then comes any religion.' Yes, issues like forced conversions of Sindhi-Hindu girls and kidnappings exist, but these are driven by deep-state policies, not local Sindhis. Our youth is actively resisting such injustices while working to preserve and promote Sindhi culture. I'm hopeful and pray one day, all indigenous Sindhis will get their lands back and live happily in Sindh. Anyways, best wish to both of you. being sindhi , did not know much about the history because my dadi was quiet young may be of 5.but we spoke with each other in sindhi ,eat delicious sindhi food and preserving our roots but at the same time feel about the community being lost in india and rest of the world too. and the last question from where we belong is asked alot from us .but proud to be sindhi and born and brought up in india
Loved to hear you explored and showcased our community
Good to see Shaneez doing the intro of the video!😂😅🙌🏻
being a sindhi myself my grandfather too migrated from sindh ( current day pakistan) to india i loved this video about history of sindhis ❤
28:28 - What Shaneez says here really resonated with me. When I was in second grade, my classmates asked me about my native place, and my mom told me it was Pakistan. So, I proudly told them! They were all shocked and asked if I was Muslim.
I've always felt a deep connection with Kabir's dohe, Hindu gods, and Guru Nanak Sahib, and I remember feeling confused about which religion I belonged to. This video provided so much insight, Mohak! Amazing job!

This was such a detailed video on "Sindhi Community" till date...
Thanks Mohak bhaiya for such a informative video... 😊
Finally, a well produced video that was able to hold my attention and explain to me important facts about my own ancestry. Good shit. I don't even speak Hindi and I loved it.
Being a sindhi myself. Heard many stories of my grandparents on how they surrvived the partition.
My maternal grandmom had scars of the partition as a 6 year old travelling on a ship via karachi.
Maternal grandad was a son of a landlord and received his dues in india in 1964 (the same day my mom was born).
Paternal grandmom from sindhi hydrabad and paternal granddad from shikarapur. He had also visited the great bath in mohenjodaro and was so happy talking about it. (Hardly 1.30 hrs away from his homettown).
Unlike parsis and other minor communities sindhis were not that well knit within the community since they were traders with not much land.
In fact my paternal great grand father used to travel to tamilnadu in 1930s via trains (>1 week teavel) to establish his finance business. This became the foundation for my family settling in tamilnadu in 1970s (after staying for 20+ years in Mumbai).
Also for names my sur name is Bathija where "Ja" pronounced "jha" also means family of.
But here "Bhati" refers to brick masons. Similarly we have "Makhija"s.
Thank you for rhis video.
I'm also a sindhi sikh whose family came from pakistan to india and living in uttarakhand ever since
Bhai thankyou for creating this video and making people aware about us!

I am a hindu sindhi living in India and I wanna thanku both for taking this issue up. I am literally crying, May God protect all Sindhis we have suffered alot. Hoping that karma will surely do something and we will get our rights back, our freedom back, our culture and a part of Land in India that we can say is our homeland.❤❤❤❤❤
Whole india is yours, no need of just a part.
@PrashantUpadhyay-v5e Thats true bro but what are we missing is a sense of belongingness. Our community cant practice our own language we always are left behind as compared to other communities in any state. Our voices are not heard resources are not properly allocated, for eg our new year CHETI CHAND has NOT been recognized as a holiday so just imagine not able to practice Pongal, Gudi Padwa or such other festivals, does that make sense but yes we sindhis go through this every year.
@PrashantUpadhyay-v5e also to add our appeal for a DD sindhi channel is in the court since decades. Can you imagine , we have to fight for just a DD Sindhi through court no government is considering such issues. We would provide crores of funds to Maldives, Sri Lanka, Turkey but our own community is left to suffer for such small amounts.
U re right I m from sindh
Full support for this cause!

Either you die, or you convert or you leave. It's been to us, it's been to Punjabi, Kashmiri and Bengali Hindus as well. But it's not over yet, the challenges we faced have not completely disappeared. The evil elements of society are still there who want to divide us Hindus. If we want to survive then we must stay united! Proud to be a Sindhi Hindu. Jai Jhulelal ❤🚩
