  • Walk starts from Buttermere village. Mellbreak is 1,680ft above sea level but still with great views. A footpath next to the pub leads off to meet the old stone 'Scale Bridge' with the view of Mellbreak 2 miles or so distant. A nice path then makes it's way up beside a beck before turning away and climbing up to the wide grass and heather top. Lovely views from a relatively modest height. The hill overlooks Crummock Water, with a more distant view of Buttermere. The large brown patches on my pic of "and across the tops" is heather waiting for its chance to shine when it flowers in October. Walking straight forward along the top brings you to a very steep scree slope as a way down. Er, no. The safer route off was the one I took, a rocky narrow ledge which very slowly made its way down to meet the grass slopes at the far end. It was then just a case of going around the far end to the shores of Crummock Water and follow the very pretty route next to the lake all the way back to Buttermere. About 9 miles altogether. I've added 3 slides at the end of the video to show some views of Crummock Water you don't get when filming from the very top of Mellbreak's wide top.
